The 10mm is to the parent case of the 40S&W. It has a thicker web and uses a large pistol primer as opposed to the 40. It was developed after some FBI agents could not hit a bus sitting inside the thing because of the recoil of the 10mm but is a separate entity

yep. That's an option too. Now you also have backup dies for each chambering! Changing out the primer bar and tube is a minor hindrance. It's a good time to clean and relube too. It's amazing how much gunk collects there under the decap/size die (typical 550 setup).

If I don't have any data on a certain bullet or if I'm just trying to get higher velocities I pack my relading set and take it to the range then I put the vice down with g-clamps and start low while coming up slowly until I see pressure signs

I switch from .40 to 10mm & back all the time on my Dillon 550b. Other than the primer bar change out from SPP to LPP, we do the exact same procedure. Back out the dies and reset with a case pressed up. I see 10mm crimping as the opp of flaring. Flare just like you did. Then after seating, measure the case mouth. Mine's usually .427". Then, turn down the taper crimp or FCD until you get .423". That takes out the flare, gives good neck tension and doesn't overcrimp and spike pressures.

Everybody is a critic right? The 10mm is not the parent case for the .40 SW. That was the original idea but you can not shortens 10mm case to make .40. The 40 uses a small pistol primer and the 10 is a large primer. Also, the case web thickness on a 10 is heavier than that of a 40. It is not possible to seat a 40 bullet to the proper depth in a shortened 10mm case. For these reasons a new case for the .40 S&W had to be designed. Powders on the slow side are best choices. Blue Dot, Power Pistol, #9, 2400, etc. Plated bullets don't work very well at velocities above 1250 fps.

Thanks for the information. When you get more comfortable handloading you'll insist on reloading your own for self-defense. One thing for certain is the availability of used clean nickle plated 10mm! That nickle plated ammo feeds like nobodies business.

Excellent video. I've been reloading for years but just 9mm and .223. Recently got a 10mm Glock (G20) and want to load special purpose rounds. I have a set of Hornady .40 dies that I've had for 10 years and never got around to using them. Maybe I can "repurpose" them. Thanks for the tips. Very helpful.

No. I use regular copper jacketed bullets for my 10mm hand loads so the stock barrel is fine. It's lead bullets without any sort of jacket that can cause problems in barrels with polygonal rifling.

My concern was with the glock barrels not have full chamber support. So when using brass over and over for your hand loads over time that extra bit of expansion allowed in the glock berrel can weaken the brass. This is what I heard so I'm just looking for advice from experience reloader

LaVance Davis OK gotcha. I do have a 6" Storm Lake barrel for the really hot loads (Underwood, Buffalo Bore etc.) as it has a fully supported chamber, and to squeeze out some extra velocity. Yes, I would agree that an aftermarket barrel with a fully supported chamber would be a good idea (does not have to be extra long if you don't want). My understanding is that this is more of a problem with the Colt Delta Elite than the Glock 20/29 but I suppose over time it could be problematic with the factory Glock barrel as well.

I've had good results with Rainier, Berry's bullets, and X-treme bullets (all are copper plated bullets). As long as you don't push them too fast (something like 1100 fps or slower), they are very accurate. And cheap! If you want "real" bullets that are priced right, check out Montana Gold's website.

because if you ever had to use it for self defense. In court, the prosecutor could say, you manufactured your own ammunition to kill my client. You did the research of ballistics, the load data, and made it as deadly as you could to kill my client. Did you, or did you not, make the ammo that you shot and killed my client with? see, it's just not a good idea.

I decided to do a little digging.. I redact the comment i just made...Although the chances of actually getting CONVICTED for for using handloads in a justified self defense shooting are next to zero.. It COULD cause you a lot of headache when you have to defend yourself in court... So, logically its a bad decision. BUT, you will still win in the end if you choose to carry handloads and end up getting sued for it.

FoodFolksandGuns I heard about a guy that shot a man attacking him with a knife in a park, he was convicted of 2nd degree murder because the yuppie gun illiterate jurors were led to believe that his glock 10mm was some kind of armor piercing deathray that only a homicidal person would own. One a different note, why not make handloads that use the same cases and bullets as the factory loads but with a bit hotter charge? They'd never even know they were handloads.

  • @FoodFolksandGuns

Two reasons (at least for me). 1) why take the legal risk? A factory load will put someone down without a problem. The full house 10mm loads are great but in my opinion that extra power is really only needed for hunting. 2) as careful as I am, I know that the overall quality of factory loaded ammo is better than what I can do. In a life/death situation, again, why take on extra risk? thanks for watching

FoodFolksandGuns There are plenty of factory loads today that are within 10 percent of the original load stats. Apparently, the full power loads were too much for the FBI and various other law enforcement organizations to adopt. They just found out that you have to shoot the gun more often to become proficient. The 357mag is still a common handgun round and exceeds the 10mm stats. This entire discussion is stupid. If your attorney is ignorant about these facts, you have the wrong attorney.
