Reloading 10mm with Blue Dot

Спорт

I was able to buy a pound of Alliant Blue Dot powder! Let's reload 10mm with it, supposed to be one of the best!

When I started reloading in the late 70's, BD had brighter blue dots. Really stood out.

B Harnden, Same with Red Dot / Green Dot. The colored flakes were brighter ( or my eyes were sharper ! ). Seems the bean counters are cutting back everywhere, right to the bone . . .

John being a 10MM fan myself, My recommendation is to use a magnum primer with Blue Dot. The original 200 Gr was traveling 1200 FPS With 639 FPE. Blue Dot is a good power, I’ve used it my Colt Super 38 Auto it performed outstanding.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, I was just using the Hornady load data, but I know that magnum primers make a difference. I'll have to try that in the future! Thanks again!

Because Blue Dot is slow burning pistol powder, the 200 Gr bullet is a heavy for caliber bullet.

I have used this combination of 200 grain Hornady XTP bullets and Alliant Blue Dot ever since I got my first GLOCK Gen 3 G-20 10mm in 2008 with outstanding results. Back then it was a special order item and I had to have one of my local gun shops order me one with factory GLOCK tritium night sights. I now also have a Gen 4 G-20 and G-40 MOS to go with that first Gen 3 G-20 with 3 10mm pistols in the mix now. In a GLOCK this combination of bullet and powder proves very reliable, safe and extremely accurate. Make sure you are using a Redding carbide GRX die in addition to your standard sizing die when prepping your brass along with a good case gauge to double check. Stay within the Hornady reloading manuals safe loadings. Make sure you are doing a 0.003" - 0.004" taper crimp and you will never have a single issue.

Nice work. I’ve been mainly using 1911’s but just picked up the newer SD Elite 3.8”. Love the gun for carry purposes. I mostly use Blue Dot and Power pistol in both self defense and range ammo. It meters consistently compared to fine powders, even if there is considerable flash approaching max loads. Off hand I cannot shoot that well and hoping the optic brings it in tighter. Good video.

Its a good powder but years ago I loaded it in some 357 mags, for a IHMSA match and after being in the sun on a hot day. It built up pressure and had to pound it out of the cylinder.

Would have been cool to see the brass after. You're a trooper. I would not even go outdoors in those conditions. 571 foot pounds is good, but I wonder if the 9.4 could get near 700. I have both those projectiles and powder I'll have to give it a go.

Yeah, I forgot to add that in the video, but the brass did look OK. Here in Alaska, there is a lot of shooting going on in the winter so that summer is free for camping, fishing and hunting. Thanks for watching and good luck on your load development!

  • @ShastaBean

To get to 700, that would mean 1255 fps...and from a 4.5" barrel would mean something getting closer to 1275 +/-..that would be seen, if equate to the 5" barrel - that the book velocity data is based off. And while I don't know what the pressure is for Blue Dot at those velocities, if I use estimate using 31.0 as a number to calculate it 1275 means 39,525 PSI...well over max-pressure of 37,500 (31 should be low, of the 3 powders on Hodgdon site for the 200 gr XTP, 32.36 is the average - using 32.36 1275 is 41,259 PSI - which means it would even exceed +P (10% higher) value of 41,250). Even that same number of 1254 fps, from a 5" barrel, and using 31.0 to calculate pressure, it means 38,905. Using 32.36 at 1255 is 40,612 PSI. Definitely something to be careful with.

10 yards, also written on the target. If you are just starting to reload, then I would pick a medium load to start to get the process down and to verify your loads shoot OK. 120gr for 10mm sounds really light for a hard cast lead. Good luck, and thanks for watching.

Blue Dot was my original go to powder for loading full power 357 Sig going back 25 years ago. It does equally a fine job in .40 and 10. However, I got turned on to Longshot about seven years ago and do prefer that marginally. For whatever reason, factory load data for Longshot has been neutered when it comes to 10mm compared to data from 3 years ago. If comparing current factory load data between the two powders for 10mm, give me Ble Dot.

You can't draw conclusions about accuracy shooting standing or shooting at 10 yards. If you insist on shooting standing you can shoot a 5 shot group and discount the worst 1 or 2 shots then measure the rest. This is because standing is a much less consistent process than using a good rest, you are more likely to have a few erratic shots that way.
