New to reloading, about a year 1/2. Did some research, purchased some reloading books, settled on CFE Pistol as my first powder. I consider myself lucky. I’ve since loaded .380 auto, .357 mag and thousands of 9mm. Very happy with it. Thanks Gavin for all your knowledge, deep dives and great content. Oh ya, I’m loading with a Lee loadmaster.

CFE Pistol is also great for 380 ACP and 32 HR Mag. 380 ACP was actually the first cartridge that I used CFE Pistol for. It is probably the best pistol powder for use in progressive presses.

I have used it with 44 Mag, 357 Mag, 38 Spl, 45 ACP, 380 ACP, and 9mm. It is a great full power powder for the auto cartridges. In the mag revolvers it made some nice mid range practice ammo and I loaded about 500 38 Plus P loads and had a great time. I am looking for more of it now. Out of stock everywhere in my area.

For me, a bit of music helps me focus by drowning out external noises. But, I couldn’t agree more with your core message - when you’re reloading, you’re reloading. Full stop. In the interest of safety, I would add one technique that I try to apply, which is to dump out the last _few_ rounds/loads if I’m interrupted by a person, pet, event, etc. Pilots are trained to restart a checklist if they’re ever interrupted before it’s completed. Redoing a bit of work is annoying, but restarting is cheap compared to dealing with the aftermath of an accident.

Downloaded 40s are softer than 9s. I shocked three different HK VP9 shooters when they shot my VP40. Power factor of the 40 loads were about 140. One of the 9s was factory 9 loads of 115gr/1150fps. No contest. That shooter said Smoooth=40 and exclaimed "Violent!" after his first shot with his 9. In a pair of HK P30L in 9 and 40 the 40 was a little softer relative to reduced power 9mm reloads using 135gr jacketed vs my powder coated 173gr 40s.

Excellent video guys I really enjoyed this one in particular almost as much as I did the CFE 223. I typically used Unique and Bullseye for all my hand gun and shot gun needs but I like the idea of one powder to do every hand gun round generally speaking. I dont shoot a lot of Magnums and when I do I like something a little closer to the tame side of things instead of ludicris velocities. This sounds like the cats meow. I am seriously digging Homies 11 grs in that 44 Mag...that sounds like just the ticket!

@@SDMacMan I’m loading 230 grainers, and it looks like CFE Pistol can get up there in velocity decently enough with the heavier bullets. From what I’m reading Ramshot Enforcer can get insane velocities with 230 grain bullets at standard pressure (somewhere around 1000-1050 FPS) but takes huge charges and will beat you and the gun up in the process.

@@michaelcheshareck3275 You get more consistency with faster powders. But if you're looking for +P rounds, CFE will definitely get you there. Was thinking about using CFE Pistol in working up 38+P loads for the Colt KC Target model revolver I just bought. I have some 124 grain Berry's flat nose plated bullets that my Taurus G3x just plain refuses to feed. I've got good neck tension with the .356 diameter bullets, and a firm crimp should keep them seated to specified OCL in the cylinder.

I use the CFE to reload 9mm on my 650XL, I find 5.2 grains does great with 124 Acme Tek coated RN or Berry's 124 RN copper plated. I use that same load for the Berry's 124 Hybrid Hollow Point and it stays nicely zeroed, although I've never shot it into ballistic gelatin and am curious to know how they would do.

I started using it to reload 124gr 9mm and found it shoots more consistantly than my CCI Blazer ammo that I typically use for practice ammo. I'm shooting it through an M&P 1.0 9mm and loading it on my trusty old Lee Loadmaster. I'm kinda new to CFE and was always a regular 231/38 user until I got a couple of jugs of CFE becase they were out of either the HP38 or 231 and figured I'd give it a try. Now, it's my go to powder for the regular pistol loads. With CFE, there's, pretty much a load for every pistol I own.

I can see where this could be a good powder, but I don't personally have any use for it. Never had an issue with copper in my pistol barrels. Most of my pistol ammo is loaded at the low end for economy and general training and CFE is more of a mid range powder. I've used a lot of powders over the years, but I keep coming back to Green Dot. 5 to 6 gr works well in 9mm, 40, and 45. 7 to 8 gr makes a fantastic slightly reduced .223 varmint load out to 150 yds ;)

CFE Pistol is the only pwdr listed in the Hodgdon annuals 2021 pg 66 as usable across the board from tgt to light magnums. Maybe not the best in every cal, but probably good enough in these shortage times. Your gun mileage may vary.

CFE Pistol is pretty handy for 45 Colt in the replica Black Powder Cartridge pistols and weaker lever actions like the 1860/66/73's. Can't speak to originals, as I don't have that kind of budget :) Good velocity with low pressure. You'll run into leading issues before you overpressure the guns if you stick with book loads and cast bullets, and Hodgden's starting load matches the black powder ballistics of the day with the sporting grade pistol powder they used, that is no longer made. No need at all to hot rod it! For the old style BPC guns, a middle of the pack load is the sweet spot for me. But the drawback is even their starting load is too hot for SASS at 930+ FPS out of a 7-8 inch barrel for a 250gr LRNFP, and a number of folks find it chronoing faster, depending on the gun, etc. YMMV. So for CAS you'll want to stick to faster powders like Trailboss, etc. that can be safely loaded to lower velocities, or real black. If shooting out of a conversion cylinder, I'd recommend some other powder, as the starting load velocity alone is past the high end of what that softer steel black powder barrel can handle; as well as the twist rate not being particularly suited to high velocity heavy bullets. Though I personally would recommend sticking to real black for those anyway, and with that large case stuffed with 2f. CFE-P is pretty handy in modern rounds, too, so one powder can do it all. Especially with powder becoming expensive and hard to find in my area, that's a big plus.

Gotta love the 40 haters. 180gr @ 1200fps out of a 10mm it's a nuclear bomb in a bullet! 180gr @ 1100fps out of a 40, probably won't even punch through the paper, BUT the recoil WILL break your wrist! SMH. My girls when they were in grade school could shoot 40 handguns just fine.

I'm a fan of 40 S&W personally. One who reloads, can make a .40 cartridge that is at least as good a a standard factory 10mm load, perhaps a bit better using a powder like longshot for instance - (with care of course). 👍
