Now that I have suppressors, I'm very interested in subsonic loads for pistols and rifles that I shoot frequently. I shoot a lot of 9mm, so I recently purchased a Bear Creek Arsenal threaded Glock 17 barrel that has performed really well! Therefore, the development of a reliable 9mm subsonic load was "top of list" for me recently. And I found the "load that can do it all" with some unexpected surprises too... And that's the subject of this article!

Great to hear, the load master was my first progressive press after I retired my Lee "O" Press and thanks for the Kel-Tec info, I own both the 380 and the 9mm. Never got that kind of load data from my semi-autos. My 38 special wad cutters are another story. Thanks again for a great video!

This was great. I've loaded almost 20yrs in pistol and rifle of all kinds. My most exhaustive testing was in pistol, 9mm, 124gr. I found MG JHPs and VV N340 with S&B SPP was the most accurrate, and consistent. Dozens of bullets, weights, 9 powders, and 5 primers and these were SD under 4. Competing with them was soft shooting but cycled my XDm 5.25 competition gun flawlessly. I learned later the standard twist on those XD-Ms naturally shoot 147gr best, but found the MG JHP was my best test in both the factory and Bar Sto barrels. My magic load.

I was so glad to see you pull out that PF-9. I have one and love it, but there are so many bad reviews about it. Unfortunately mine looks worse for the wear than yours. But it has had the sweat, lake water, and about anything else you can think of and it just keeps on shooting. Love it! Thanks for the great video and information.

I don’t think Lee gets enough credit. My Dad gave me a Lee Turret press 20 years ago and I really like it. It’s a good compromise between a single stage and a progressive press. Could it be better? Yeah but it’s a solid value. Did I mention I’ve had mine 20 years? I get great results from mine and I highly recommend it to anyone who’s on a budget.

I remember watching a video a few years ago with Larry Vickers shooting his 338 Lapua (suppressed vs unsuppressed). At 1300y, he was having issues hitting the target unsuppressed, but when he added his suppressor, he was able to hit the 1300y target rather consistently. So that drop in velocity you were seeing unsuppressed makes sense.

All of this was stamped confidential not for public release. I still keep it in my loading manual and still load the original FBI loads with unique powder. My pet 147gr subsonic loading is Alliant Bullseye and X-Treme bullets. Challenge was not over-pressuring the PC9 carbine, but still enough umph to reliably cycle the G17 with the same load. I get an avg StDev of about 12 out of the PC9, and 15 out of the G17 using LabRadar... plenty good enough for me for a common carbine/pistol load.

This is a true story, and I don't really care if anyone doubts it. (There is _probably_ still some documentation _somewhere_ that would confirm it.) Many years ago -- maybe 40 - 45 years ago -- I had a 9mm and decided I wanted to do some reloading, but, could not afford a loader and all the mandatory accoutrements to go with it. But when discussing this at the local gun store (small town MI), I was told I could do it with a "Lee Loader" which I'd never heard of. And so, I was quickly outfitted with a Lee Loader, a jar of Hercules Bullseye, and a box of 158 grain lead bullets. And no, that's not a typo. I found a recipe for 9mm reloads using Hercules Bullseye and 158 grain bullets -- and no, it didn't blow up my gun, and yes, it _did_ cycle it properly. Before haw-haw what a MOH-rahn I was, keep in mind that this was the 1970s, when the Internet was barely functional even for those in the Ivy League's ivory towers -- and the "big day" when _commercial_ entities would be allowed online (meaning that _large_ corporate entities could exchange email and files (via FTP for the latter) was something anticipated, but not yet in existence. And things like sophisticated email _clients_ were _far_ in the future -- as was "the web." So, my recipes came from whatever slips were included with the Lee Loader or the jar of powder or whatever else they gave me at the gun store. I doubt that heavy a bullet is still suggested as a 9mm load, simply because I'm pretty sure that if it were, we'd be hearing about it! And yet I can confirm that at least for me, it _did_ work. As to how _well_ it worked, I've no idea at all. For all I know it would penetrate a half inch into a gel block, or maybe require a ton of elevation due to a two foot drop at 25 yards (I doubt the latter, though, and do exaggerate, but you get my point). All I know for sure is that it was sufficiently powerful as to be able to reliably punch a hole in a paper target. That said, I'd be curious to know if anyone is still using that weight, and how it works for them.

I’ve done it a few times. Lee sizer to run them down to .356 I always used a faster powder (titegroup or 231). The loads were really light and getting a profile to chamber consistently was a challenge but we have done it. The 165 grain Berry’s made it kind of extra work for no real benefit.

I just started using Ramshot Silhouette and 147 grain Berrys FMJ round nose bullets. I initially used a 4.8 grain load and a recommended (by Berry's) OAL of 1.16. The Chronograph read ~1075 ft/sec average out of 5 rounds. This was hotter than I wanted, so I dialed it back to 4.3. This got me down to 950 ft/sec average on 5 bullets. I dropped it down to 4.1 and got an average of ~875 ft/sec. This is exactly where I wanted to be and they cycled without issue in my P226. So far... I like it. Now I'm gonna try out a similar test using HS-6.

Bullseye Shooting is about subsonic ~ 800 Fps into the X ring at 25 yards off hand, 1 handed. There is a history of accuracy in handguns moving slow. The Random Rest was a great way to test this. Interesting primer choice. So many 357 Magnum loads do not use magnum primers. It looks like in a short case CFE Pistol likes the burn rate it receives from magnum primers.

No matter what I do, I'm not able to beat the one hole groups of the AE 147 gr. Only way I can match its accuracy is with the 147 Berry's with Titegroup (3.5 gr) and the same lot of brass. After watching this video, I will be trying magnum primers. But I'll back the Titegroup load down to 3.3 gr just in case.

Ammo was 158 lead cast for .38 special sized down to 9mm. Lee Alox plus Unique power makes it like cowboy Action shooting, Smokey ! Can't wait to try this in my glock 26, just waiting on a threaded barrel. Load data was from a 1970 Lyman manual I got reprinted from Cromwell publishing. The only bad thing about that manual is no c.o.a.l data. But my Best ever load with Unique is for .38 special 4.3 grains Unique with 158 gr. Flat round nose Laser cast bullets. I can literally shoot the black out of the target at 25 yards. Using my Ruger GP 100 6" barrel. And that's why I sized them down for 9mm to see if I could get the same accurate results.

I wonder if the short barrel of the KelTec is partially the reason for the incredible standard deviation. Being such a short barrel, could it be that the powder burn rate(time), primers, and barrel length caused such close fps? Point being that with a short barrel, the powder burn time(for that powder) in the barrel did not have enough time to significantly influence bullet speed resulting in a low standard deviation? The bullet exited the barrel before powder burn/rate characteristics could significantly influence velocity??? I dunno... Great results regardless!

Just first guess: The shorter the barrel, the lower the standard deviation. Less time in the barrel, so less time for differences in multiple variables to have an effect. I will rewatch this video when I load up subs. Thanks Gavintoobe.

Been messing around with 147s for awhile now. Berry's 147gr RN over 4gr of TiteGroup with CCI 500 primers. On my Chrono was getting about 983 and a SD of only 7 fps so no complaints here.

Just awesome. I have mostly Lee equipment and have found that it takes some fiddling and patience, but if you meet it half way it can produce some great results. A buddy, who can afford to, is jumping into Dillon. And that's great. But as I know how much he shoots....? I dunno. Somehow there's gotta be some sort of quantity (how much you shoot) vs quality (how expensive do you really need). After that components, technique and precision take over.

CFE Pistol is a slow powder so it won't be as quiet as something fast like Titegroup, Sport Pistol, Accurate #2 or N310/N320.

2.7 standard deviation, I don't know whether your machine Miss third grade math, but your standard deviation was 3.4 which is still quite good. And considering the load you're using and you're using a magnum primer, it's to be expected, all of the companies in Europe that make match ammo, usually use quite a hot primer because the primer sets the stage and the hotter primer tends to reduce the effect of load variance. The total deviations in that shot string was 17 ft per second, divided by 5 is 3.4

I’d be interested to know if you changed powder to 231 use load data to try and get same velocity, keep everything else the same if it changes anything. Then try with small pistol primers. You have a great baseline, I’d love to know if it can be beat! The other take away would be to quantify just how “magical” what you have stumbled across is. Nice work. I think I have all those components, I may try to duplicate. I’ll use a 365 and a G17.

Your 200 rounds without an issue was an interesting comment. You understand that different press makes & models operate differently. Many users do not understand that or deny it. Most Lee product problems are operator related. The Loadmaster press is plagued by the need to read directions and understand them correctly. Being able to watch what the Directions mean is a by product of the Internet. This was a weak point in the Lee Directions for many people. For those that do mechanical repairs from manuals the press is easy to operate.

Livin Cincy, your exactly right, i have a Lee classic turret press and a Lee loadmaster press and when i got the LM set up all this fiddling and tweaking you hear about im not having to do any of it, it just runs and turns out excellent ammo. The only time i have to do anything to it is when i change bullet style and powder charge, Lee is underrated.

If you think Berry's is anything to note; you need to try some of the coated lead bullets from the major players (ACME, Missouri, Blue, Bayou, etc et al. I like ACME because they're still shipping. The 145gr RN and 115gr are both awesome!!! I like Bayou... But they are so slow) VV320 or try some Alliant Sport Pistol! It's awesome!

neat combo on 147 Berry's 9mm. Another affordable option; 147 grain coated flat nose bullets from Missouri Bullet Corp and Brazos bullets. I am using them in a Sig P210A(merican, new) for NRA Precision Pistol, aka Bullseye. I would really like to know how they would do from your Ransom Rest; Swiss military acceptance criteria was 5mm at 50 meters, which close to the outdoor slow fire range of 50 yards. New powder is Winchester Winclean W244, which is very similar in burn rate to W231/HP38 (those two are same powder with different labels). Also, VihtaVouri N330 was always a prime 9mm choice but hard to obtain until recently.

I absolutely love CFE Pistol and use it for all my 9mm/Super 38 and 38 Spl/ 357 Mag. I would like to see this same test with a cast and powder coated bullet. Currently I'm loading 9mm for $.05 a round with range pickup brass (buckets of it), 4.5gr. of CFE Pistol (1150 fps.), home cast 124gr. Lee TC bullets cast out of scrap lead and powder coated and CCI SP primers bought at $35/1000 before the shortage. Very consistent and accurate out of my Walther PPS and Ruger SP101 with just enough punch to make it interesting.

Hey Gavin, I'm really new to reloading. So new I haven't even created one round yet. Still trying to find primers. I've been watching a lot of your videos and you have great information. Thank you! I have a question tho. I have seen at one of my local sportsman shops these berry's projectiles. They're selling imo for a great price. I can't seem to find load data for this projectile. Can you point me in the right direction for load data please? Maybe a link or where to find it. Thx! I do have more questions, but one at a time I guess. 😆
