***** What are you even going on about, I was just pointing out his spelling error. But you're wrong. We're steadily moving towards electric cars and motorcycles. It's not a "gadget of the moment," it's an appetizer for the future. More and more electric automobiles are coming out and they're getting cheaper and cheaper. It'll take a long time but eventually we'll see electric autos to be a majority on the road. It only makes sense. But even if it were, aren't you proving his point by saying this is a "gadget of the moment"? If a good life is experience, as RCR says, you're proving him exactly right by saying this is a passing fancy, because it's a passing fancy that you can *experience* before it'd be gone. After all, isn't what makes experiences great how unique they are? You talk like you're trying to sound like RCR but you shoot yourself in the foot doing it. PS How could you call this soulless? Did you even watch the video? A glorified golf cart because it uses an electric motor? That's like saying a Ford GT is just a glorified lawn mower because they both use gas engines. For Christ's sake. "Every car I drive from now on will be compared to THIS." - RCR

I work at an airport, so I drive a lot of... interesting cars. I drove one of these, although I think it was the D. Anyway, when I first approached this car I didn't know what to do. The door handles shot out at me, the lights all came on, and the AC clicked to life. I didn't now how to turn it on, and I found out from the owner that once you get near it it IS on. So you just sit in it and go. That's it! I spent ten minutes trying to start this thing, and turned out it was electric and I was just sitting there like an idiot. Fun to drive though!

It does everything for you, which makes it even more complicated at the first drive. And you bet it’s fun to drive, if you give it a ramp I’m pretty sure it can catch up with the planes where you’re working at.

My boss has one, and I recorded a little bit of (garbage) footage of me driving it. It is.....amazing. The feeling of the torque SHOVING you into the seat, no matter how fast you were already going, was phenomenal. It was like the Saturn V, you didn't just accelerate, you hit the next stage and it KICKED you into forward motion, despite already moving in that direction. Plus, the torque from the regenerative braking was amazing, gave you that nice engine braking feel, which helped keep things familiar in a vehicle that is almost anything but familiar. Its an amazing vehicle, and I don't think I ever looked at a performance car the same way after driving it.

@@UwUKris I know that the C8 corvette doesn't have a bad interior but that is a 60-90ish k performance vehicle while the Tesla model s is a luxury vehicle which is even more expensive. Unless you have test driven a c8 and it's interior is amazing, I don't think that car is a good comparison to the Tesla model s. If it is a good comparison, that is worrying.

Tom Jacobs Absolutely. I've been to Brussels last year and it wasn't more than an hour there until I spotted a Model S for the first time. Then I think I saw 8 more in that week. Yet I found myself eyeing Jaguars by accident, thinking they were Teslas. If my memory serves me, the Model S is the most popular plug-in car in Belgium, but the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid is only 40 untis behind it. They're a lot tougher to spot, you could only tell by their green brake calipers!

A good life is experience... I've been to the bottom of the sea in a submarine. (A tourist sub, but still...) I've put an airplane into a spin and let it recover itself. (Cessna 152 with an instructor, but still...) I've held a full grown tigers head on my lap and fed baby tiger from a bottle. (In the tiger-monastrary in Thailand, but still...) I've sat in the darkness of the African savannah at midnight, listening lions roar. (On a safari-trip, but still...) I've stood near the top of Angor Wat and looked at the results of humans working together. (During a guided tour, but still...) I've done all this and much more, but when i decline to go the bar to get drunk with my coworkers, they say: Come on! Live a little! Don't you want to do something with your life rather than sit at home? It never occurs to them that i sit at home and don't drink so that i can have money to experience something more than the taste of alcohol and the load voices of people trying to shout over the music. Yet they consider themselves the adventurous ones because they go out drinking on the weekends...

Anyone who actually buys a Tesla only care about going in a straight line and expect everyone to move out of its pretentious way. This hunk of metal can't hold a candle in a course longer than 300 yards or involves both left and right turns.

Here in the Netherlands they are becoming the new standard as taxis. And they do make sense being used for that purpose, just like the Mercedes E class made sense in the 80s and 90s. Even without the tax benefits for taxi drivers it makes sense: they are cheaper to run than those horrid diesel taxis out there. Still owning a Tesla as a private person is still unachievable for the regular guys out here.

  • @unlisted9494

    @unlisted9494

banpeinet No. They don't make sense. The W124 chassis mercedes was used as a taxi because it's insanely over-engineered, it just doesn't break. Batteries on the other hand, do. Pour all the money you want at it, batteries have technical limits. Look at every other car, especially the prius. The prius is a part-time electric car and most of them have had to had their TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLAR battery packs replaced. This is already affecting newer cars, like the leaf. Using an electric car as a taxi is stupid, as you ~might~ get two years out of a battery, which for a Tesla, i imagine is well over $15,000, probably closer to $20,000. It just doesn't make any sense.

Skylar Garrett It does when you factor in fuel costs for a taxi over its lifetime. And newer electric batteries have electronic management, they should be fairly reliable. They are sold under a warranty... They will get better. Battery swapping has already gone the way of the dodo because even the current tech dosen't really need it.

  • @banpeinet

Skylar Garrett BagelBytes ***** I agree with Zepherian. Here in the Netherlands the cost per liter diesel today is 1.30 euros. (That is 5.41 dollar per gallon) The consumption of a taxi using diesel is about 10km to 15km max on 1 liter of diesel. In the most ideal situation that is 8 cents per kilometer. Running a Tesla Model S you pay 3.8 euro cents per kilometer. Given that a taxi drives about 100000 kilometers per year this saves at least 4200 euro per year. The battery life of a Tesla Roadster was on average 85% after 100000 miles, so nothing to worry about with the Tesla Model S.

Skylar Garrett I don't want to cause a fuss, but that's way off. Off the meter! Faux news style! Can we all agree that the statement of Prius batteries costing $12K for every one of the 7 million Toyota and Lexus hybrid owners is complete bull out of the gate? Anyways, if anything, battery packs are just like an engine. You can have one small, inexpensive part that can cause the whole thing to fail. For batteries, that's just replacing one faulty module when the battery pack gets tired after 10 years, refurbishing the whole thing as if it were new. Typically, like a lot of car parts, they're salvaged from wrecks in scrap yards, Prius modules are cheap being around $50-$150, LEAF modules are online for $200, while modules from crashed Teslas are constantly being bought up for converting VW T1 to T2 vans and other classic cars. Yet there's plenty of Priuses and Ford Escape hybrids with well over 200,00 to 300,000 miles on them on the original battery pack, many of them being taxis in both coasts of the US. If they can last roughly 11 years of hard toil, then I'm sure the more advanced Li-ion batteries in the Model S and other cars would fare better. At least drop the nonsense about the batteries only lasting 2 years before replacing. They have at least 8 year warranties, so that makes your argument invalid. They're not your Lead-acid wet cells in your car that keep asking for a jump start, nor are they the laptop cells that bake on top of your lap or pillow. The prius we know, hate and love was first sold 11 years ago. If every one of them failed, we would know. banpeinet About taxis, electrics and hybrids are the perfect work horse. Still, there's not that many people who know or are too stubborn to be willing to know. I've met one taxi driver in Dublin in April and he told me it was the best investment he ever made. It was only 2013 when light came to him saving €6500 in 18 months and driving 55,000 km in a Nissan LEAF. Now, he probably saved another of that sum again by now. It was this guy that I met: www.siliconrepublic.com/discovery/2013/01/30/dublin-taxi-driver-claims-electric-car-saved-him-6500-over-18-months And it is catching on, I'm seeing a few more electric taxis, especially in the country side! Yet, there are a swarm of Prius taxis in Dublin, very common. The drivers certainly want it for some reason, importing to a tune of 300 of them a year from the UK. The second hand resale value is a result for that too, the cheapest and oldest ('04-'05) Priuses I can find are asking €5000 for over 100,000 miles on them, roughly the same price of any Passat or Golf of the same age and mileage. I can tell you (and not just from my own car) that they are predictably reliable, comfortable and efficient. Of the prius taxis I've took, talking to the drivers, they claim that while hauling people around and they are getting roughly 45mpg in city conditions, that's compared to Avensises, Passats and Primeras getting 25mpg if they're lucky.

That's a long, long way off. Only once you get three things will manual driving be largely outlawed: 1) An organized and electronically managed traffic system, whereby all of the automated cars are basically remotely managed by a network, maximizing efficiency. 2) Cybersecurity so good that managing the nation's cars on a network in an environment where even small errors can result in major accidents is not considered a massive vulnerability to terrorist or military attack. 3) An automated, networked system remotely managing automatic cars that is so reliable that errors of any significance don't happen. Those things are a long, long, LONG ways off. As in, probably only a thing once you get thoroughly reliable AIs.

It's a great car, but unfortunately here in the Bay Area they're so common you can blindly throw a rock and it'll strike a Tesla's windshield. That's not so much a problem of the car, more of the average buyer here who buys one to 'keep up with the Joneses' and use the car simply as a status symbol. They don't really care about the performance, they certainly don't care about the mileage or tax credits, they want them because other people want them. I sure hope this mentality is exclusive to my area because it's otherwise a very nice car (though I'd change the grille design, I can't unsee it with a Hostess Ding-Dong stuffed in it's mouth)

WittyDroog I don't think it's a matter of "keeping up with the Jonses" IMO. In the bay area you can't keep up with the Jonses - it's a losing battle because the Jonses probably have a 2 million dollar home. People buy them because it makes them feel good about not hurting the environment (while conveniently ignoring the pollution of those batteries once they're useless and the pollution created to produce them) as well as simultaneously getting great gas mileage and having a luxury car. It really comes off as a good car to commute in if you have the money to throw that way. I feel like people like it because it wraps them (mentally) in a security blanket that says they're doing everything right.

WittyDroog If that mentality funds Tesla to the point that in 10 years they can sell a similar specced car for around 30k I hope those semi rich asswipes keep keeping up with the joneses. Who cares? This is still car 2.0 and is the sort of automotive architecture I would like to see as standard in the aforementioned 10 years. I just hope I can fit some solar panels before so I have a home charging infrastructure setup. The idea of doing 100k kms a year for no fuel costs appeals to me :D

I told myself a long time ago, that i'm never, ever going to buy a brand new car. But a Tesla... here i'll make a exeption. but i'll wait for the newer one, based on a BMW 3-series. i think it's going to abit more praktical for the common man, and much cheaper. my dad says he'd like to buy it with me, we're living under the same roof anyway. I tryed out a P85... you'd think a electric car does not make any sound, when you accelerate. but it does.. some kind of turbine-ish sounds and.. it sounds pretty darn cool.

The funny thing to me is, id rather buy tesla stock than a tesla sedan. Well, until the suv is out. Then it's going to be a good time to be alive.

CptnJCFG Several years ago our son (then 15 years old) suggested we buy stock in Tesla. He said to his mother..."Mom, you should take $40,000 out of your 401K and invest it in Tesla" Of course we laughed our asses off and gave him the typical response a parent would give a teenager who makes stupid suggestions. He then got a summer job for 2 Summers in a row. Saved up all his money and invested that money in Tesla. Well, he's now 20 years old and has helped his mom and I pay for college with his Tesla investment and still has a little left in stocks which he's holding on to for a down payment on a car after college. His mother and I, on the other hand, wake up in the morning and the first thing we do, before brushing our teeth, is kick ourselves (REAL HARD) in the balls for laughing and making light of our son's suggestion 5 years ago. Today we would have had enough money to buy a nice home for ourselves, something we have struggled to accomplish in our lives. So my friend, I "more" than agree with your statement!

Eddie Lopez we all carry that one regret when investing lol (mine is netflix), better not let that eat you up. There are always new opportunities. But hold on to tesla, remember they also are also big on energy and that is about to take off. Your kid is going places, hopefully in a tesla of his own!

rubiks15 That is a good point. I have a hard time putting the Tesla into the weekday/weekend categories though. On one hand - it's economical. Assuming you still spend more on it with the purchase than you would on a Prius in 5 years, that everyday money-saving is still psychologically good. That means it's probably good for weekday driving, but then you might run out of juice on the way home and be late for dinner. Then it's best for weekends, cause it's fast and you probably don't have anywhere to rush... but if you're anything like me, you want a 2-door manual FR for weekends. If I had the funds, the struggle would be very real :D
