Regular Car Reviews: 2010 Toyota Prius

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A Prius is political correctness on wheels. We're in an age where it's impossible to tell the difference between someone who's genuinely offended and someone who's sarcastically ridiculing all the uptight, pearl-clutching, butt-plugged social justice warriors. It's all those moms who are unironically nodding in agreement when Chris Matthews goes on MSNBC and says it's “racist” to use the word “Chicago”. It's the same people who sign petitions to have the word “manhole” changed to “utility hole,” and use the term “metabolically challenged” to avoid offending dead people.
A Prius is a peculiar kind of vehicle. It's for the Competitive Mom in everybody, the one who looks like she's simultaneously smelling a hot dump and wondering if she left the stove on. The official car of taking your shopping cart all the way back inside the Redner's instead of just using the cart station. Mom passes by the corkboard at the entrance, and wonders why the detectives haven't solved Gary Redner's murder yet.

As much as I love anything with a v8, v12, w16. I need to accept that the gas mileage is gonna help me save money. Hell maybe I can get that ferrari. For the meantime this isnt even that bad! We live in good times where u can pick up a safe(ish), hella reliable, efficient car for like $7k on the used market.

"Nice Prius" ~ Said No One In my years driving the hellscape of California's highway system, I've yet to see Priuses pulled over by cops, broken down on the side of the road, involved in car accidents, perform dangerous speeding or lane weaving, or even so much as participate in road rage horn honking. I think the drive-like-an-old-bitch, lameness aura of Priuses actually promotes road safety.

If you want a new Prius joke, the one you can use in Japan is the “Prius Missile”, where when you see a Prius, you can joke about it crashing into a nearby convenience store. This is because a lot of Prius drivers in Japan are really old (pretty understandable, since about 25% of the Japanese population is over 65), and they usually crash into a building because they confused the pedals.

You're right, the Prius does play the villain. When the light turns green, everyone runs from it like it were a villain in a horror movie. Then at the next light, it slowly, methodically catches up with them like they were the teenagers that ran past the Mini convertible running with the top down to hide in the shed full of chainsaws. You can never drive fast enough in a Prius, which I found out by having people who were passing me on the shoulder of I-35 on a vacation trip while I was in the slow lane. I was doing about 90.

cloridan Beauchamps no she is not vegan or vegetarian at all in her or my opinion. These words are used to describe how she eats in a faster/simpler fashion. She eats everything except for animals, with the exclusion of fish. In the fish world she limits cephalopod consumption as much as possible. She won't eat eggs u less that are not mixed with anything and fully cooked. She doesn't drink milk or milk products. But she will taste a little cheese, really little, if it's a really nice one. She doesn't have intolerance to anything really nor is she a vegetarian or vegan. But this diet modified over years has helped her Chron's disease. Also, as I am a big into the veggie lifestyle for animal rights, my wife limits the cephalopods more than she would for her health diet. So, I say vegan plus fish and occasional egg.

FYI, there are a lot of new cars coming out that auto-stop the engine when the car is stopped. Aka the Starter motor is run multiple times in a single car trip. If those don't have issue, then the problem becomes a case of poor engineering. I could build a starter motor. It would probably be complete shit and barely work 90% of the time because this is the first time I've ever tried doing so. Starter motors have been around for nearly a century. Prius motors barely have a decade. Some kinks are to be expected before they are worked out. Obviously, if complaints about the electric motor keep coming in, while AFAIK, Tesla's motors are doing fairly okay, then Toyota is being a lazy ass. At least you don't break your arm off when the engine start goes wrong, like it could happen if you forgot the correct procedure in those Model Ts.

I would happily own a prius and some classic american muscle side by side. The damage these do to the environment is negligible since lithium Ion batteries are recyclable. The Prius saves on gas and if I'm taking a long trip I'd happily take this car. I'm not super politically correct, I just like having a little extra money i'm not spending on gas. Then there's the muscle car...,that one's for fun.

Politics set aside, Prius is an engineering marble on its own right. Toyota set a goal (of building a car that can achieve highest MPG in EPA testing AND in the hand of customers), and they NAILED that target SPOT ON. Yes this is one of those car. Its like the Dodge HellCat series. Dodge set out a target (of building a blue-collar 4 door SuperCar)... and they nailed it. We dont like mediocre cars - something that tries to be everything but achieves nothing. WE have plenty of those around... like ACCORD, CAMRY, GALANT, ALTIMA, SONATA, PASSAT, MALIBU blah blah. Fast forward to 2099, I guarantee you that the name PRIUS will be in the list of the most significant vehicle of the century. You won't find S2000 or Supra or HellCat there.

Jason Wou Exactly, Personally I think you can't claim to have any real passion for cars unless you have at least respect for the Prius on a tech or engineering level. It seems as though it's seen more as a political football or a threat to the V8 or some such nonsense however the Prius and it's hybrid engine will probably save the Naturally aspirated engine in the long run because the only alternative is turbo charging.

@@xq39 You mean a Fisker Karma, sorry, Karma Revero? Low slung sports cars don't sell like tall hatchbacks and sub-SUVs. Putting a kid into a child seat in the back of a low car is harder than if the seat were at belt-height. Getting into a low car is hard if you're unfit or injured. Visibility at junctions is harder in a low car. Driving on multi-lane roads is more stressful in a low car because it's harder to see past the car in front to anticipate the concertina. Nervous drivers don't like low cars when other cars aren't low because nobody wants to see a bowtie or ram emblem approaching at face height. "Diesels do better" Hmm, Let's see. I've compared a 2015 Prius "Two" (basically the stock Prius) to a 2015 VW Golf TDI S (Stock Diesel golf in the USA). Both are similar in weight. Both are four-door hatchbacks. Prius MSRP: $24,200 Golf MSRP: $23,165 *Manufacturer's Fuel consumption ratings in City/Combined/Highway:* Prius: 51/50/49 Golf: 30/36/45 *Fuel tank sizes:* Prius: 11.9 US Gal Golf: 13.2 US Gal (All this info came from each of their websites) The national average for a gallon of diesel is $2.86. Compare that with the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $2.22. Do the math, a $0.64 cent difference (Statistics from the EIA, Feb. 2015) Now. Assuming you can achieve these fuel consumption values, let's see how much distance you can cover for each fuel consumption rating and the cost for one tank of fuel: *City:* Prius: 11.9 x 51 = 606.9 miles Golf: 13.2 x 30 = 396 miles *Combined:* Prius: 11.9 x 50 = 595 miles Golf: 13.2 x 36 = 475.2 miles *Highway:* Prius: 11.9 x 49 = 583.1 miles Golf: 13.2 x 45 = 594 miles *Cost of one tank of fuel:* Prius: 11.9 x $2.22 = $26.418 Golf: 13.2 x $2.86 = $37.752 Let's see what the fuel cost per mile is for each fuel consumption rating using the value we calculated for one tank of fuel. *City:* Prius $26.418 ÷ 606.9 miles = 0.04353 dollars per mile Golf: $37.752 ÷ 396 miles = 0.0953 dollars per mile The Golf is 2.19 times more costly than the Prius. *Combined:* Prius $26.418 ÷ 595 miles = 0.0444 dollars per mile Golf: $37.752 ÷ 475.2 miles = 0.07944 dollars per mile The Golf is 1.79 times more costly than the Prius. *Highway:* Prius $26.418 ÷ 583.1 miles = 0.04531 dollars per mile Golf $37.752 ÷ 594 miles = 0.0636 dollars per mile The Golf is 1.40 times more costly than the Prius. It's not a very clean process either but noone cares because it's not used on a Japanes eco car. As you said: everyone needs something to hate on yet people chose the Prius for no reason and make wrong arguments about it. Also if in a normal petrol car the engine or even the starter motor breaks you're equally fucked as when the E-motor in the Prius goes fucked so what's your point?

Would have been great if you had done a little more research on the car (aside from maybe cleaning it up a little bit for the review). Like the fact that it has an eCVT that has no friction parts that can wear out (it also has two - not one - electric motors and some planetary gears and no cvt belt; it also has no timing belt or other belts on the engine that would need service). Or that if you use 'power mode' it'll actually go quite quickly if needed. I got the same one and pull a 2000lbs trailer coast to coast. It's fast and reliable (the transmission can't wear out) and not even a rocky mountain snow storm could stop it. Ignore the BS about the shifter and the 'it being different' part and you have yourself one of the most reliable and economical cars out there that'll go for hundreds of thousands of miles. No wonder they're used for Uber, Lyft, and Taxi service all over the place. And the fact that it doesn't run its engine all the time when idling is actually pretty nice. Particularly on long road trips you can sleep in the car with the AC/heat running and the engine will only turn on every now and then to recharge the battery. Bam - camper mode. I love that car!

It is way cheaper to mine fresh lithium and carbonate ores and chemically react them into lithium carbonate than it is to recycle the pitiful amount of the stuff in a spent battery. Also that article of yours barely makes the distinction between earlier Priuses' nickel metal-hydride batteries and the newer Li-ion batteries. Smelting and/or recycling nickel releases a lot of toxic shit too. Just ask the people of Norilsk in Russia, where 20%+ of the world's nickel is smelted, and heavy metal poisoning is considerably higher there than other industrial towns.

Actually, I purchased my prius brand new in 2010; initially I hated it, in the end 9yrs later it was my best car ever. The car would jump up to speed (65-70mph) in a flash, the electric engines would assist in the launch so the gas engine wouldn't have to work as hard. I averaged 42-45mpg with a lead foot. I loved how the car was so light and fast, I once placed 1,000 lbs of tile in the back and the car took it like a champ, it was so reliable. Alas, it died recently due to a car accident, so I bought a new one (with all the bells and whistles) this new prius is so heavy it doesn't launch or do anything quickly. Moral of the story: buy a stripped down base model, change the spark plugs to the "ngk laser iridium" and enjoy driving the car like a really fast go-kart, don't worry about dings, coz it's an old prius, it just works!

Is a $500 starter that goes bad after 80k mi better than a $1200 electric motor that averages 250k mi before going bad? In reality, I can't find any info on the lifespan on the Prius electric motors. They seem to be reliable enough that nobody on the internet is complaining about them. They are apparently not a realistic concern. Neither are the batteries, which have an incredible low rate of failure and incredibly long warranty period, just like the electric motors. Taxi companies are regularly putting over 300k mi in Priuses without having to replace any hybrid system components.

@RegularCars I know I live in Australia, so you obviously aren't able to review MY actual car, but keep a look out for a mk3 or "4" Volkswagen Golf Cabrio / Convertible. Mine is a 1998 i-4 2.0L, it is truly an odd car, as when people think "VW Golf", they think Hatchback, Grandmas and 30 year old car enthusiasts. For a Golf, it has a lot of style, and since it lacks a metal roof, 2 rear doors and hatchback, it's center of gravity is substantially low and seemingly zippier than a standard 2.0 hatchback. When I got my car (it's my first) I fell in love with it, the look, the feel, the SMELL. Love your work Mr. Regular, you got me into cars!

My dad has an '07 Prius, the only 2 things I don't like about the Prius is: 1- its too cramped inside for someone who is 6'3" tall. 2- it has no acceleration. Which is a problem since getting onto the highway in MA, a few areas you need to accelerate HARD in order to merge safely. I almost got rear ended because of the lack of acceleration. Past that, I don't have anything against the Prius, it does it's job and it does it very well. My dad often gets 40+mpg and only thing I've replaced is the headlights. Past that, everything on it is original and has survived since '07.

rockinchimp I'm sad to say my mother bought one of these when the new generation came out in 2005. It wasn't bad, and I was young so cars didn't matter as much. One thing though: we were in an accident once, and the entire passenger side crumpled like an aluminum can, and the curtain airbags didn't deploy. This car sucks, no matter what safety rating they gave it.

Funny thing about taking a dig at the Fit's resale value is that they hang on to value like crazy. Wife's '08 got crushed last year and insurance gave north of $9k for totalling it. Picked up a manual '08 mid mileage for just less than that. I mean the car retailed for like $16.5...that's holding competitive value to what the Prius is quoted 8 years in. Side note: love the videos!

I don't really get to be the Prius villain out in the Pacific Northwest like I was in the Midwest. When people find out what car I have I reflexively flinch back a bit expecting a snide remark but no one ever says anything out here. I guess I should be happy but not getting to piss people off with my automotive choices is a little less exciting. P.S. That "hybrid production ruins the environment" thing was debunked!

Fortunately those electric engines last 15+ years. My neighbor and a co-worker have used 2000 & 2001 Priuses respectively with all original parts. The readout screen make you think of late 90s laptop screens but they both still get about 40 mpg.
