How well has this 2014 Tesla Model S aged over 95,000 miles?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I have a look at the wear and tear on this 2014 Tesla Model S that has now done 95,000 miles. In the UK, these early models from 2014 can now be cheaper than other long range EVs such as the Hyundai Kona or Kia eNiro, so should you consider an old high mileage Tesla or a newer EV that is still under warranty?

Thank you for a nice video! I have a 2014 Model S P85+ , same colors. Still perfect condition as well , I have a prepaid 8 years maintenance plan so it has been checked regularly. I bought it new and I am so satisfied with the car that will keep for many years. The price on the used market is low so no point to sell it, since it feels like new. The only reason to buy a new one would be for the autonomous driving, but that is only needed when I get so old that I don't wish to drive myself anymore.

Still only buying new tires and windshield wipers. Batteries have degraded 1% in average per year. Best cars we ever have owned.

There are videos on youtube where a Tesla had a small accident (back bumper was a little dented) and the repair cost was more than 25% of the car value as new (it was a model 3), waiting time for repair was like 3 months in USA. In Europe waiting time would be a lot longer, and the repair cost would be astronomic.

I have unlimited Supercharging, so I'm thinking since this car pretty much looks and runs like the day I got it, to keep it for a long time. Great video. Congratulations! I bought a used 2015 S85D with only 12,004 miles in April 2019 and LOVE it. Felt like a new car! I was fortunate, at that time Tesla still offered a “like new” warranty of 4 years/50K miles, in addition to the 8 year drivetrain/battery warranty, so I still have over 1 year warranty left! Not a lot of things gone wrong, rear latch replaced, radar sensor rubber replaced, and a recall on the steering column screws and front latch check. I did have to replace the original 12v battery in February 2021, not bad for a 6 year old life! Tesla charged me $230 US dollars to replace. Recently, I have received offers to buy my car for US$5K more than what I paid! No way I would sell my Tesla!

I own a 2015. The condensation in the reverse lights come from that bar being swapped out. That is not the original Tesla bar. It was upgraded. The bar needs to be glued down to the lens but doesn't really fit to stay glued down. Tesla doesn't use a good enough adhesive. The original bar did not have a plastic cover. It went straight to the inner plastic. The key fob plastic casing can be bought from Tesla direct if you wish to have a new one. You are also missing the cover for your filter. That is probably why it is so dirty. You should be able to ask them for another one. I can guarantee this car has been worked on a lot during the warranty. Tesla never wants to give you the history, despite them keeping it. Those "Drop links" are not the first repair. I can tell just by the bar in the rear and the missing cabin air filter cap". They are also not cheap to run out of warranty. Most repairs are about 1k. I can also guarantee those door handles have been replaced. Check your front Valence to make sure they haven't broken. You shouldn't take the battery below 20% btw. I never go below 30% and I slow charge. The wipers speed up based on speed and rain coverage. Sitting still the wipers go at a steady rate until the rain is heavy.

Condensation in the rear lights we have on all three Model S cars since 2014 and 2015 but no problem yet. Comes and goes. Some few under warranty things were repaired by Tesla like some door handles but that was like 5 years ago. The 12 volt batteries have been replaced after 7 years and that is just fantastic normally 12 volt batteries don’t last that long. But other than that only tires and windshield wipers. Still going strong after over 300.000 km on each. If anything happens to our HV batteries we will replace them with refurbished once and just keep on driving. Brakes will eventually also need replacement but not yet. Best cars our family ever has owned.

My 2008 Toyota with 390,000 on it hasn't had any of those problems either. A lot of people that buy electric vehicles like a Tesla because it's a high-end luxury car they tend to be coming from Audi's or BMWs that are basically horribly unreliable. If you had driven a Toyota Avalon or Camry or something else certainly it would not be as nice and as exciting as an Audi. But you would not have had any of those problems either. My car still rolling on all the original suspension components, except for the struts themselves. Tie rod ends ball joints control arm bushings, engine doesn't leak a drop. Burns a little bit. But not enough to be worried. Still has the original sway bar links too.

@@ronmac1832 I think we're not going to know the final results of reliability on Tesla and others until there are a lot more of them on the road and many years have gone by. Tesla also has some issues to deal with service and repair. Once they start selling double or triple the number of cars that they do today. This problem is only going to multiply if they don't find some solution. Or if the cars end up being incredibly reliable and mostly perfect when they leave the assembly line. That would only leave car accidents and repairs related to that to deal with.

And regarding the motor, when it is time to repair / replace it are there 3rd party people able to do this or do you have a idea of Tesla cost ? Are service items ( suspension, brake parts ) readily available from 3rd parties now ? and are Tesla willing to sell parts to people / garages now ? Door handles are much cheaper to fix if you're willing to do it yourself. Service kits are available online and third party spares, plus plenty of KZread videos. Motors - probably Tesla only, but with an 8 year unlimited mileage warranty, then I'm not worrying about it for a while yet. Brakes, suspension all available third party. Brakes are made by Brembo and spares easily available. I've purchased genuine Brembo pads for around £90 for a full set, but you can get other brands for half this. The drop links cost £21 each, but you can get other brands cheaper too. All these items were purchased from www.autodoc.co.uk/ The bits are no more expensive than other vehicles. Tesla are on par with other main dealers too, but their labour rate is £145 per hour.

My 110,000 UK miles P85 is just the same except I've not scuffed the trim as you get in. I specified no sunroof just a plain black roof, that was a good idea, the cars c of g is so low without the glass up there and obviously no leaks or noise. Doors and window seals all good, yes mould in the seam on the rear lights, jet wash them out. Good assessment on 100k Model S, these things last rattle free.Tesla only charge £60 for the CCS adaptor now, note many more Super charger then appear on your sat nav screen. And yes the seats are great after big miles and the cars dont rattle, build quality a bit questionable but little niggles sorted in the first few months of ownership, long term they hold together well. Early on I set easy entry to seat up wheel up seat back forward and guess what no interior wear on B post. Ive recently had all 4 door handles replaced with V2.5 which is the latest V3 handles mounted to the V back plates this means there are no microswitches or moving wires This mod was done by a Tesla Ranger for £1,400 as I had fixed 2 handles when the 3rd and 4th went. The mod has to be done on all 4 as the system software is updated but the new handles work by calibrating current draw off the motors so dont fail..............so far..............10 months later and counting.

its a hard decision between a used model s (2014/2015/2016) and a brand new model 3 sr+. The model s has a classic gauge cluster behimd the steering wheel and is sleeker (to me). But it has the charging and range struggle on the 85kwh pack (caused by the software-update from tesla to prevent warranty cases on the battery). The model 3 is the more modern state of the art drivetrain but has quality issues which cause you to beg tesla ro fix them after you got the car. That is annoying and unique in the car industry. Other automakers are aware of satisfying customers by expirience of perfect build quality. In germany, only few if any garages are available for fixing issues on the model s caused by aging or wear (whishbomes, water pumps and charger may fail). Hard decision.

As well as getting regular software updates, one can also replace the MCU (the main control screen & computer) to the latest MCU2 version for about £1500. Yes it's a major amount of money but it gives you the latest gen processors, a much faster computer makes the pinch & zoom function on the map instant, everything else is much snappier and you get free Netflix access if you are on the Premium Subscription plan. For £200 you can also upgrade the old 3G modem to the latest 4G/LTE model which improves the entertainment system. Here in Norway, the original Model S vehicles came with lifetime free supercharging valid anywhere in Europe, so my daily running costs for energy will always be zero, no matter how high domestic electricity prices go. Electric vehicles here are also exempt from toll road charges and can use the dedicated bus/taxi lanes if the main lanes are congested. All EV sales are currently VAT exempt which is probably why 85% of all new car sales here are plug-in vehicles.

Making something like the VW ID4 a little too close in price for a brand new car. You definitely want to keep an eye on that motor noise and get it changed regardless before the warranty is up. They will be giving you a new redesigned motor that should never fail ever again. There are some aftermarket suppliers now to help take care of the door handle failures in these cars. But you could say the same about any vehicle - EV or ICE. If you're the type that worries about items breaking and the cost of repair, then buying a used vehicle isn't for you. Buy new or nearly new that still has warranty. All vehicles will suffer failed items at some point...that is why cars get cheaper the older they are! I've had old ICE vehicles in the past that suffered gearbox failure and I then had to decide whether to replace or scrap the car. The reality is that EVs are considerably more reliable than ICE vehicles, so far less risk. But then its also reality that there are less choices when EVs break and they can be costly to repair, but that is simply because its a new market, less skills, less parts, less upgrade options etc etc.

In the UK, these two cars wouldn't be the same price. The Tesla would be at least £10,000 more than the Ioniq. I assume you do mean the Ioniq 38kWh, not the Ioniq 5?

@@Zorrely021 If you do long distance driving, go for the Tesla. The Supercharging network and the integration with the in car sat nav is amazing. For performance, go for the Tesla. For utter reliability, go for the Ioniq as you'll definitely have less trips to the garage. However, while I do like the Ioniq (I also have a 28kWh Ioniq), its a bit dull compared to a Model S. My 2014 Model S has been the most unreliable EV I've owned, but also the best EV at the same time. I could sell it now at a considerable profit (see kzread.info/dash/bejne/jHh_x7mJe9CtZcY.html) but I'm keeping it, because there isn't another EV I'd rather drive.

Because Tesla should be thoroughly checked before buying. I certainly have to look at the breakdowns in both cars. Because honestly, if the Tesla starts to break down, the question is whether I would be able to deal with it financially because I'm tight on money. Maybe you, as an expert, have a better suggestion for a car for me in that range?

A 2016 vehicle is also very different to my 2014 Model S, as Tesla constantly improves components. If you can get a Model S for the same money as a Ioniq, go for the Model S. But if you want complete peace of mind, the 2021 Ioniq will still have 4 warranty on everything. They are very different cars, so you really need to view/try them.

The only car that ever used the Chadamo plug was used on the Nissan Leaf and was limited to 50 amps DC. Does the UK not use the Tesla plug or is it slowly being phased out? I will have to admit it must feel strange to Americans to drive on the “ wrong “ side of the road in the UK. At least Tesla eventually switched at the factory to building cars with the controls on the right side of the vehicle instead of the left as is American practice. I have to admit it appears the UK road system is in much better shape than American highways. Even if they do drive on the “ wrong “ side of the road. Cheers!

Actually there's other EVs in the UK that use Chademo as this was the standard (and still is) Asian DC connector. So vehicles like the Kia Soul, Peugeot iOn, Peugeot Partner van, Mitsubishi i-MiEV and others use Chademo. We never had the Tesla plug in the UK, apart from on the early Tesla Roadsters I believe. All Superchargers have only ever been the Tesla type2 standard and now more recently CCS.

Just for your information not a single 85 has 85kwh of battery capacity. Most of the 85 I know have roughly 73-78kwh from which you have 69-74kwh usable. I won't buy an 85 that has not had its drivetrain replaced and I would rather buy an 85 that has had its original battery replaced because most original battery packs have failed after roughly 150.000 miles and having a failed battery pack ouside the warranty is a major blow.
