Regular Car Reviews: 2000 Toyota Celica GTS

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is the 7th generation, so it runs on the T230 platform with the Front-engine, Front-wheel-drive layout, using an engine similar to the one that powered the MR2 Spyder, which adds a certain poetry, since this ended up dying the same year as the MR2: In July 2004, poor sales forced Toyota to announce that the Celica and the MR2 would be discontinued in North America at the end of the 2005 model year. Of course, I'm not entirely sure its death is necessarily the fault of the car itself, so much as the economy surrounding it.

Jawan Meizu Toyota hasn’t fallen from the top, what are you talking about ? Their cars sell very well. They are just selling to a market that cares about reliability and good gas mileage. That doesn’t make them boring, they just aren’t pandering to your specific tastes. If you want fake vents and hood scoops maybe try Honda ?

@@GupyRambo For me at least. I see Toyota today as a feminist SJW cars because that all I see is the damn prius's on the road and they act like there the best just because they have "Better" gas mileage and saving the economy. A 95' Civic hatchback have better gas mileage then most of the Prius life span. Also you can just remove or replace the fake vents/hood scoops, I sure don't like them.

From what I know, the Celica 2ZZ and the Elise 2ZZ are identical, at least internally. Same head, same block. The difference in power comes from a different ECU and different tune. Toyota and Yamaha have a historical relationship spanning a few engines, like the 4A-GE 20 valve. The Celica 2ZZ has that Yamaha designed head. Also, I'm surprised you didn't make a VTEC joke! The 2ZZ has variable valve timing and lift, only Toyota engine to get it!

+jalderink I just never understand why can't people not be condescending pieces of shit like you? Just correct the person without sounding like your shit don't stink. It's an easy comparison to make. Small FWD 4 cylinder vehicle between the two. One ended production in 2006(Japan) and the other started at the same time. Same manufacturer. How can you not see that's an easy mistake to make? Why is everyone such a rude piece of shit here?

1:50 The 2ZZGE anywhere aroud the world but America HAD the Yamaha head and that means more power (192bhp) and higher redline (8200 and 8400 for JDM models). Cool engine, might burn some oil, but when maintained properly, it's really good fun. 3:30 This is a partial reason. Kids didn't want to be seen in douchy coupes, young people suddenly realized SUV's were "cooler", that's why the sales of cheap sport cars dropped and sales of cheap small SUV's rocketed to the sky. There were loads of coupes or roadsters, pretty much every car maker had one in 90's/early 00's, but by the end of 00's I can think of 2, maybe 3: Scion tC, MX5, RX8. I really wanted the GT86/FRS/BRZ to success because I want small coupes back, especially RWD ones and if the GT86 was a flop, that would mean the concept of a small sport car was dead. That's why I think it deserves all the hype it got.

First problem is it is automatic. that is not giving this car a fair chance at all since the 2zz was made to mate up with the short gear ratio 6 speed manual. How would I know, well since all the engines came stamped with "Yamaha" that was kind of the dead give away.

I wound up settling on an '09 eclipse when I found one that was barely used, but dang, I still wouldn't mind driving this car someday either. The boot is big enough for a full weekly shop. It's acceleration is just fine for a daily driver. Handling is also very good for a FWD with no LSD. It is more than possible to shift at the redline of 8200 rpm and maintain lift in the next gear. Gearbox is great. The gears practically shift themselves lol. Overall, it's a great car.

Celica gts, matrix and corolla xrs, lotus, runx, etc. = Same engine! Same yamaha heads on ALL of them. In the lotus It was only rated with higher hp because of a different intake design and a different ecu... Valve lift would actually kick in on a way lower rpm than the toyotas depending on how hard you press the gas pedal. Toyotas had it at a 6000-7200rpm starting point depending on the year and model all the way up to 8250-8300ish. I had a matrix xrs it was moded and tuned. It was actually tuned by redliner9k... So trying to make the shit work in that way is rediculous while for the price you can buy a Megasquirt plug and play, get the car tuned and that fucker will feel like an Elise.

US GT = UK VVTi US GT-S = UK T-Sport UK GT = T-Sport with TRD body kit, Eibach springs and leather/alcantara interior. Various US market Toyota had ECU/mapping changes to meet emissions regulations. Some have different rev limits, some have higher cam change points, some have less power. A few are the same spec as an EU car though. And I didn't say that all of them were auto, I was just pointing out that this one was, so for that reason (combined with the fact that this one has a nerfed engine) is a reason to not pay much attention to this video... :) I had a UK GT (192HP) which was fantasic, combined with a lightweight flywheel, LSD, stage 1 clutch, custom intake, TRD gearing, and gearbox spring/linkage/shifter mods, it was a pleasure to drive, and even more of a pleasure to thrash ruthlessly! These days I have a '98 MX5 (Miata) 1.8iS though, which I am restoring. The Celica went not because it broke, but because muggins here (me) broke it!

I drive a 2003 Toyota Celica GT. He is my trooper, it has seen so much. Through California, to Texas, Florida, and now home in Texas. That tiny red car has over 260,000 miles on it and runs like a champ. I replaced the hydraulic lifters to the truck. Bought it a new set of lights (not just the bulbs but headlights) a new bumper, and its amazing. Sure, it has its kinks but its got a character that cannot be rivaled by other vehicles. I love my celica. And those who say otherwise can stick to their vehicles.

I am the owner of a 2003 Toyota Corolla Fielder wagon. It is a JDM model with the 2ZZGE engine, and 4-speed automatic transmission that goes into 4-speed manual mode. The JDM version of the 2ZZ is rated at 190HP. All the 2ZZ engines have Yamaha heads. (Since the advent of the S2000, Yamaha has had tremendous input in Toyota's high performance engines up to the Lexus LFA.) This is the best Japanese vehicle I ever owned. It is doing 220,000kms and runs up easily to 190kms/hr where the limiter cuts in. In the video, it was never mentioned that the engine carries VVT with Lift also. At the time this engine came out, it was the most powerful 1.8L engine out there. Compression ratio was 11.5:1. The engine fitted in the Lotus Elise had a supercharger installed. Really, the automatic and manual give two different driving experiences. The engine begs to be revved ! Trinidad & Tobago.

I have a white 2000 GT-S 6 speed manual transmission with 217,000 miles absolutely immaculate. No rust, no dents, wrecks and no issues. It has been taken care of mechanically and of course armor all, lots of armor all. I look forward to another 18 years out of it. Maybe it will be considered a classic like a fine 69 mustang.

Both the Lotus and Toyota engines were 2ZZ-GE and both were co-developed by Yamaha. They are the same engine! Same block, same head, same variable valve timing and lift. The Elise made like 9hp more than the GTS and 16ish hp more than the XRS because of little technical differences (emissions) but they're still completely identical engines.

I've owned several of these things at this point. (Obviously someone pointed out that the Elise and GT-S motors are indeed the same). Something to note for anyone who is curious about owning one of these, or the MR2 Spyder. When concerning the 1zzfe, avoid the 2000-2002 ones with higher than 120k miles, unless you want to do a rebuild or a swap. The engine had weak rings that were used in order to help shorten the break-in period, and too few oil delivery holes in the pistons themselves. My first 01 started to consume oil at an alarming rate around 140k miles. Because it's an engine flaw, this problem will follow the engine itself. (Corolla, MR2 Spyder, etc). This problem was fixed on the 1zzfe from 03-05. (At 130k now on my 05 GT).

I don't hate automatics, but if you are going to buy a Celica, manual is definitely the way to go, even in GT-S form, the automatic is not worth it, not only it is slower than a 6 Speed GT-S, but the auto GT-S is no better than a 5 Speed Manual GT in terms of performance and with the Manual GT, you can still run on regular unleaded gas and get better fuel economy #'s than the GT-S, if you are gonna buy a GT-S, buy a manual, a manual is the way to go to buy a Celica. Unless you can't stand rear drum brakes, a Manual GT is even better than an Auto GT-S.

if you want to buy any car, other than a mini van, or a family truck, buy a manual. If the car your looking at can come manual always take a look at the manuals, because 99% of the time they are better. Also where you live also has an impact on this decision. Red lights and weather can be a bitch, in which case automatic is much better.
