    The celica really is a completely underrated car. Double wishbone front and back, very light, amazing cornering agility, controllable and predictable liftoff oversteer, extremely practical, reliable, cheap to buy and own etc., I could go on forever. I personally am a big fan of the look but with something so risque, i could see how its not for everyone. Saying its a girls car means nothing. The mx5 is a "girls" car, yet enthusiats jizz their pants for its driving ability. Its a shame it was only fwd, but toyota did a very good job of making it feel like it isnt, and it means its still useful in less than an ideal road conditions. This car can do EVERYTHING. I used it to move. Im kind of glad its underrated and its ability isnt known until you own one. thats what keeps it cheap, and out of the hands of the bandwagon crowd. I dont understand why people have this obsession with power. Taking a corner and controlling a slide takes actual skill, not a deep pocket which is all you need to go fast in a straight line. Maybe that explains it right there. Celicas, live long and prosper!

They are all classed as girls cars or hairdressers cars but I am a male and don't care, I prefer the mx5 for the rear real drive and soft top but they are both amazingly fun cars, and cheap to insure for us young folk. Cheaper than the hatchbacks with similar performance anyway.

    @Atv821 - Wrong. The 2zzge is the exact same engine as in the lotus and is also used in the Celica 190/t=sport and in the UK the GT special edition. You are correct in the Yamaha head development which incorporates Lift where a second cam with higher profiles on the shaft comes into play after 6200 RPM, hence opening the valves more. In the US it's used in the GT-S. The UK Spec was 192 BHP and the US was approximately 10 BHP less. The pre-2002 could rev up to 8200 RPM before it redline. After 2002 they lowered it to 7600 RPM. Many tuners also add Rotrex superchargers to the Celica and other mods with many Celicas running over 350 BHP plus. The weak spot was the gearbox after 300 BHP. The car cannot be remapped using it's own factory ECU so an aftermarket ECU must be used. However, some Lotus tuners could lower the lift point using their own ECU.

    There were far more than 2500 ST205 GT-Fours. The 2500 number comes from the homologation cars which were fitted with the plumbing required to activate an anti-lag system, a water spray bar and pump for the front intercooler, a basic water injection system, a small hood-mounted spoiler aft of the windscreen washers (also standard fit on all UK cars) and an extender rear spoiler mounted on risers. Production of the ST205 ran from 1994-1999

  • @Z45HR4

    @Z45HR4

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yes. The homologation cars were the consumer purchasable road going versions of the GT-Four WRC car. There were only 2500 GT-fours ever produced for mainstream consumer purchase (not sure if the 2500 included the actual WRC cars or not.) Of that, 2100 of them remained in Japan and only about 300 of them were ever sold outside of Japan as normal consumer cars. It's very similar to cars like the Ford RS200 or the Audi Sport Quattro. Both of which were produced in limited numbers (about 200 road going cars) to fit homologation rules. The point is that the GT-Four is not something you'll just find at some used car lot and can pick up for $5,000. It's a rare car that was only sold in a couple areas of the world. So using it as a point of comparison between the sixth gen Celica and the seventh is meaningless.

    Current owner of both the 7th gen Celica and Gt86, I honestly recommend the celica, they handle well, under-steer is manageable, and the after market for them is very supportive, the 1zz-fe handles boost well (More so than the 2zz-fe). I have more fun driving my celica aggressive than I do driving my Gt86. would recommend 9 out of 10, only reason why its not a 10 out of 10 is because it is front wheel drive. Lastly the Gt86 should of had a hatch like the celica, would of made the car MUCH more practical.

    I completely agree with Alvaro. Turbos are better with engines with a long stroke (distance the piston has to travel up and down). The longer the stroke the more the torque, but a shorter stroke provides higher rpm and top end but horrible torque. But thats just one factor of thousands.

    Evarist Dennis A longer stroke dosn't nessisarily get you more torque because, with the same displacment, you must reduce to bore, which reduces piston surface area. The longer stroke also increases frictional losses. Case in point, both the 1zz and 2zz make about the same peak torque, the 2zz just does it at a higher rpm thanks in large part to its second set of cam profiles.

  • @evaristdennis1987

    @evaristdennis1987

    6 жыл бұрын

    177SCmaro I was talking about engines in general. The more the piston moves up and down the more it will rotate the crank with each pass. If the 2zz did not have the cam setup it has its torque would be horrible. Yes increasing stroke will increase frictional loss but decreasing the bore will also decrease frictional loss. I think Toyota/Yamaha were very clever in how they designed these two engines. Each engine is different and there are so many variables. Im not saying you are wrong, just saying I was talking about engines in general and not just the 1zz and 2zz.

It had been garaged all it's life and was owned by mature owners, came with service history that would fill a book. I think it's a brilliant car, the build quality and attention to detail is outstanding and I find power is fine. Handling is absolutely superb. Getting 145hp out of a 1.8 naturally aspirated engine is good, getting 190 is some achievement.

    I had a 7th gen celica for my first car at 20 and still have one now at 26, there's nothing better for the same money. It looks good and the unique shape aged well and still gets a lot of attention because most people don't know what it is they assume its expensive. When lowered the handling is great and it sounds good with a custom exhaust. It does lack torque compared to the MR2 turbo which I used to have but the upside of this is that its very efficient. A good balance between power and economy for a daily driver since I still get stuck behind cars everywhere I go anyway. It's reliable even at 15 years old and 160k miles and never broke down, the only things that have ever broke in over 5 years of ownership are wear and tear or things I modified or broke myself

    when I was 16, I knew I wanted a Celica the moment I saw it in NFSU, and althouth I hadn't, since it was a quite new model I couldn't afford, if I would have to switch now and that would be one option, I wouldn't even think twice. I still love this car.

    I had a 2000 Celica GTS that I bought new at the time and all it had was a RMM intake and I managed a 14.58 in the 1/4 those cars were way underrated. I was looking for one 2 years ago as a commuter but couldn't find a decent one so ended up with an 03 RSX-S that car reminds me a lot of the Celica it's def faster but the Celica handled like it was on rails.

    My first and current car is a 1998 2.3 Honda Accord. SOHC 16v non-VTEC (because I could only afford the cheapest trim) and it's cheap to insure, has plenty of aftermarket support, and being a 90's Honda it's reliable and easy to fix, and junkyard parts are abundant. Smooth, tight gear shift, double control arms front+back, liftoff oversteer is super predictable and fun, I've only encountered understeer once, and that was in the cold and wet. Using the handbrake or left-foot breaking counteracts understeer, and weight transfer+handbrake=dope skids. Love my car.

    I have a Celica 2000 un-face lift version (prefer the hole intake rather than the slit intake, also the fuel gauge is digital but slightly different it has longer bars and is more orange in colour.) absolutely love it. One thing to keep an eye on is oil consumption I was told by my local mechanics they can burn a bit, so keep an eye on it if you own one. Running costs are 1,500 pounds for insurance. 200 pounds for tax and 50-60 pounds to fill the tank from empty. Average 30-35 MPG extra-urban inc A roads. 40 PSI tyre pressure. Fantastic car go out and buy one!!!

    I honestly don't understand all those who say that the Celica 1.8 VVTi 143 hp is slow. The other cars with aspirated 1.8 engine to get 8.5 seconds in the 0-100 Kms must have around 170 hp. And we're talking about an engine almost 20 years ago ... Of course if you compare this Celica with cars with engines above 2.0 it is obvious that they also have more hp, right?

    I'd get the last gen of both of these cars, the AE86 and the older Celica. In my opinion they are better. The AE86 because... Well.. do I need a reason for an AE86? The AE86 looks beautiful (Both the Levin and the Trueno) and that 1.6l twin cam sounds better than anything else in the world. And the older Celica looks better in my opinion and has a nicer ring on the exhausts.

    I can vouch for the Celica I had a GT Four tuned to 300+ HP by the prev owner, for a few grand it's the best sports car around. Superb handling, plenty of power, pretty practical with decent enough back seats and luggage space in the back. Even though it was 25 years old very few maintenance costs over the 7 years I had it.
