I have often told my children that just like there is junk food for our body, there is “junk food” for our minds. This is such an important subject and I am so happy to hear you talking about this!

Boy this struck a chord with me. As a former public school art teacher I have been often angered watching sports get all the funding while the arts were considered the step child and unnecessary. We were always the first to be cut and the last to be deemed necessary. Parents have no idea the weight they carry if they would just speak up! Granted culture does start at home but we teachers spend more time with your children than anyone. Help us help them to love the finer things, art music, literature. It would build a better America. :)

to be fair, people who are athletic in school are much more likely to remain in good shape the rest of their lives, art teaches important creativity, but it doesnt teach health or nutrition, although im all for art, i do digital art, i play several instruments, the entire school system needs to be changed, from the ground up. for example, most kids in "iss" have a mental disorder of some kind or another, students are expected to be as good as everyone else, forced into depression if they fail a year of school, forced to waste time relearning what they already knew, while they arent even being helped to pursue what they are naturally drawn to. I dropped out in 8th grade, and immediately went to college, im not smart, I didnt study, and i barely made it into college. but it proved to me the school system is a waste of time.

Challenge accepted yet again. We have, what we call, Family Fun Night with our boys. We take turns to choose our dinner, dessert and activity. My three boys and husband moan and groan when it's my turn. On my night I choose something fabulous to eat (not chili dogs), and I usually choose a classic-like movie. My oldest son admitted to me that he loved "Little Women". Now they are requesting classics on their night. Just last Friday was my oldest son's night and we watched "The Fiddler on the Roof" and had a lively discussion about it. I love your videos and books. They are so much fun and enriching.

My husband and I cancelled tv and stream what we want from apple tv. We have become much more discerning about what we watch. After watching something dumb we both had that awful regret you have like after eating too much unhealthy food. Also, I would have dreams about what we watched, which made me realize the truth about what you expose yourself to stays in your mind. This is much like when a song tune gets stuck in your head and plays over and over again. I suppose "you are what you eat" is also true for "you are what you hear and see". Thanks for the reminder.

Human beings need to be creative because we are made by God in His image. He is THE Creator (with a capital "C"); we are in His image and therefore we are creators, too (lowercase "c"). When we create, we are being god-like; and when we spend time with His Word (the Bible) and spend time observing His World (Nature) and then create in accord with His character, we are fulfilling our purpose and finding true joy.

I couldn’t agree more! I’m a HS French teacher and feel that the arts have been so neglected in the USA. I graduated from HS myself in Germany as a fine arts major. I miss the wide variety of the arts and culture that are available in Germany and visit all the museums and cultural events I can when I’m here or in Germany. I will finally be going to my first post covid event this weekend, Songfest from Florida Grand Opera. I am fully vaccinated and we will all be wearing masks and social distancing, just FYI, in case you’re wondering. I have been teaching myself to play the violin on KZread since 1 1/2 years now and truly love it. It’s never too late to learn new things. I don’t really fit in with most people here but I have all my wonderful hobbies (knitting, sewing, reading, painting, drawing, violin, classical music, learning languages) that keep me happy. I don’t have a TV. I gave it up years ago. It is too violent and just too stupid, imho. I prefer KZread which is always teaching me things. 🌸

Thank you so much for speaking out about this incredibly important topic. I myself haven't watched mainstream news or TV with commercials for the last 5 years or so. I don't even have a TV. I just don't get any satisfaction whatsoever from it anymore. I pay very close attention to what I feed my mind and body because I just refuse to be dumbed down! The thing I need to work on though is that I spend a little too much time on the internet. Although I use the internet mostly for intellectual purposes like researching about the arts, culture, psychology, health, I need to be more conscious of the addiction and step away, get out in nature, read more, meditate, etc. I think it's critical to ground oneself and disconnect from technology more often so as to be more free and self-aware.

Huge thanks, Jennifer! As a classical pianist (I teach & perform), I SO appreciate this post & every person who relates/appreciates & has responded. The arts feed our souls, enliven our minds & heal our hearts ... without them we live in poverty, & with them our lives are infinitely rich regardless of our bank accounts. Now I'm going into soap box mode...ARTS EDUCATION is the foundation for keeping the arts alive in our world. Your idea of actually bringing the finer arts to life in the home is wonderful! When enough of us place value on this, the next step is getting the kids into music/dance/art lessons & classes, & - here's the biggie - getting our public schools to reinstitute full-blown programs that give every child an experience in the arts. Total appreciation for your contribution to this re-enlivenment of heart & intellect in our world. (And, um, yes, a plug for where we can all go together!) Merci et être bien

Hi Jennifer! I love this post! About 2 months ago, my flatmate was cleaning & accidentally pulled the antenna cable of our tv from the wall socket. We both just shrugged & said, "Later". Our tv cabinet is big & full of books & classical music. The thought of emptying it to reinstall the cable was too much! So instead, we read & listened to ABC Classic FM radio. Heaven! We only reinstalled it when we found out that Downtown Abbey was returning...& in the process of moving everything we both put our backs out! Which proves that television really can do you harm! :-) xx

This is s great message! Thank you 🙏🏻 I urge people to not give in to what is trendy or trending! Look up the literary classics, seek out the old movies, listen to world music and literally increase your brain and your ability to understand and relate to the world and people around you. As a society we seem to glorify and celebrate problematic behaviour and street culture. There is no shame in wanting to better yourself, speak properly and strive for sophistication.

My husband and I are huge supporters of the arts. He plays trumpet in a local symphony and I sing in choirs and perform in musicals. We have taken our kids since they were 5 years old to musical performances, our own and professional ones. You must make an effort when it comes to the arts and your children. We play Jazz, Classical, and other types of music all day long at our house. Now my son plays guitar and sax and my daughter plays piano. We are so shocked at the amount of money parents will pay for their kids to play sports, but never pay for private music lessons. The arts make a person more will to contribute to the community, gives children confidence and allows humans to discover things about themselves. This is an important topic to discuss because we are loosing our grip on the creative arts in this country.

I am a composer who writes contemporary classical music and I totally agree. I have heard people in my generation say classical music is "boring". If I bring up the fact that I write contemporary classical music they are surprised that anything is still being written for it. Mainstream culture, it seems, considers classical as an old and dead genre unfortunately. My hope is to change that. I would love not only to have people listening to the older stuff but also some of "newer" stuff, twentieth century to present day in classical music. It is such an amazing genre!

I completely agree! Growing up in our home, my parents always had classical music playing. We were not allowed to listen to heavy metal, rock. To this day - I much prefer classical music over any rock, upbeat, heavy metal type of music. We grew up in Cincinnati where we heard the Cincinnati orchestra, I took singing lessons and piano lessons. Now that my children are grown and have their own children, they have implemented classical music into their home. I love the theatre too. Now, if only I could get my husband to take ballroom dancing lessons with me!!!

BUT...it also seemed to unlock classical music for me...I just never understood classical until I heard their takes. But then I got curious how the original compositions sounded and have started to really love and appreciate classical and opera now. It's like a new world opened up for me. Now to get my daughter off the fairy princess books and trying out Little House...

Hiya I'm new to your channel I too have been inspired by taking a good look at myself and all the channels that I watch on you tube the ones that do huge hauls buying loads of "stuff" and yes I agree I too fell into the same trap of buying "stuff" I didn't need and thinking about it I didn't really want, so I began to search for minimalist channels and I found yours, I have now de cluttered my wardrobe and my house, also my husband saw what a great effect this had on me so he too as also de cluttered his wardrobe etc. I have also de cluttered my channels on you tube that thinking about it I had become addicted to making me to want to buy more "stuff" I have also stopped buying magazines which as you say don't show "real" people and also show me more "stuff" to buy. I have now taken up my love for reading again and now I have time ( after the big de clutter) to take up my other passion of drawing again. Sorry this is an essay lol 😊 but I wanted to let you no that you have inspired me to live in the real world again lol I have also done the ten item wardrobe which has also helped me a lot thank you for sharing and thank you for my "reality" wake up call. Oh, I so agree with everything you are saying! I was fortunate to grow up in a home where music and reading and theatre were all highly valued. My mother wasn't a professional, but certainly a patron, and it was simply a part of my life from an early age. When my boys came along, I made sure to gift them with the same environment. Classical music on public radio was always on in the car, reading time was always part of the day, and any play or other performance that we could afford was an important event. (It doesn't take a lot of money to achieve - public radio and libraries are free, as are many performances in the park, or attending free dress-rehearsals of plays or concerts.) I am proud to say my oldest son went on to become a music major in college, and my younger son is following the same path. They are interesting conversationalists, well read, and truly well rounded people. They played sports and have spent a little time rotting their brains with video games, too, but it's music they love the most. Thank you for reiterating the importance of the arts!

I think the easiest first step toward refusing to be dumbed down is to get a library card and go browse! Don't just head to your usual section, really wander the aisles. Because everything's free, it's easy to try something new. Try many new things. If you find after the first chapter or track you're not into it, all you've spent is a few minutes. Even if you are someone who can afford to buy books, the sense that you want to be happy with your purchase can narrow your selection to the tried and true. Libraries resolve this, and are of course extra amazing for those of us on a strict budget.

My 9 year old daughter and 6 year old son attend Kilombo Academic and Cultural Institute in Decatur, GA. When my daughter first started 2 years ago she was shy and not interested in reading. 1 of the many art courses offered at their school is African dance. She was very nervous at first and hesitant to share in the group experience. Little by little she joined in barely moving her body, shy that she would appear silly or unable to do the moves correctly. I noticed at home she would try the moves on and dance her little heart out when no one was watching. My husband and I were convinced she'd be a wonderful dancer. What we really took note of is as her dance ability increased so did her interest in learning. With our encouragement, her teachers guidance and preparation, her dance classes and performances, she is now a 3rd grader reading on a 5th grade level and a beautiful African Dancer. The arts in many forms are extremely important for building self confidence, inclusion, creativity and self determination. She wants to be a teacher and an African Dancer and I'm sure she'll come up with many more ideas. We'll be here to help cultivate them.

I know this is an older post but it so resonated with me that I had to say...YES! I've been saying these very same things to my Mom and my Husband for a quite a while now. I'm a "mature" woman so I can remember that a lot of stuff in the 70's were very dumb. It seemed America was so busy celebrating the common man that it was kind of dumbing down everything for a while. For example, trucking lingo, songs, and t.v. shows were very big for way too long. Then in the 80's we did a complete flip and started loving everything British and posh and seemingly rich. So fashion, decor and movies got better for a while. And the 90's were great as I think of that as the era of Martha Stewart and caring about your home and appearance. Hopefully things will bottom out again, and we'll go back up and have another era that we can enjoy. Jennifer, you are a wonderful example of how to live life a chic life with true intelligence, which includes emotional intelligence. You are an inspiration to me to not let this very strange era of the Kardashians and nothing but Super Heroes movies, and so many t.v. shows about murder get me down. Because hopefully the pendulum will swing the other way again. It's people like you who will help that come about. People who refuse to be dumbed down. It would be great if you could have a t.v. show like Martha Stewart had in the 90's about gracious living...except you'd be nicer. lol I can just see you on the PBS Create station. Best wishes.

When I came across your books I was instantly relieved to have found a wonderful guide to gaining a new sense of self worth and not feeling left out with my desire to enjoy what is not being enjoyed or appreciated by society. I have to admit I have fallen off what I learned from your books but I am determined to get back on track as I personally seen a difference in myself and my household when I incorporated all I learned through your books into my daily life. As a single mom I even noticed a shift of change in my 2 1/2 year old sons attitude when we would start our day together listening to KUSC classical station in the morning during breakfast time amongst us reading the classics together and showing him films with well known Artists like Fred Astaire (oh how I adore watching his tiny feet try to tap along watching what I grew up enjoying). Developing a new habit takes time and baby steps but when it's something interesting and exciting as what you are discussing you see yourself committed. Life handed me some lemons and I am determined to make some lemonade and get back up and be committed again. Thank You Jennifer for continued inspiration and touching on this topic :)

Jennifer, in your first book, this was the topic that inspired me the most. I think you could dedicate a whole book to the topic of cultivating your mind. A new study reveled that, compared to previous generations, this generation is the most underexposed to the arts. I work directly in education and the arts; I have had the privilege of exposing children to the arts through galleries, ballet, and theater. Please continue to talk more about this topic. We need it.

I thoroughly enjoy the thought provoking communication on your channel. I couldn't agree with you more on refusing to be dumbed down; it's beyond tiring. I actually found some harp music videos on KZread yesterday and really enjoyed the calming effect it gave me. And yes, it is so important that we share these types of experiences with our children.

Jennifer, this is excellent!!! As a mommy of 4, 2 girls and 2 boys, I pray that I would find ways to keep them from being "dumbed down" by our culture. And, it's hard. Very hard... Your video tonight is inspiring and I'm going to work harder this coming week to inspire my children to discover the arts and we are going to a new museum. Keep the ideas coming!

Hi, this is a very important topic. We really like how you addressed, examples in media, Culture, ect, and then followed up with some great solutions to how we all can get sucked in. It really takes awareness of oneself, and where their time and energy is being spent. It might even be a great follow up, of what benefits someone is getting out of watching the dumbed Down stuff, to understand how to better fulfill that need or desire. Keep these topics coming, as reaching a few is how change starts!

Great video. Thank You for making it Jennifer! I totally agree with you. People no longer enjoy thinking deeply about topics or having engaging conversations about politics or religion for example. These topics have become taboo or too personal to share but in the olden days that is what philosophers and geniuses did. Today, we are very advanced technologically but we share less mindful information with each other, we are less accepting of others differences of opinions, less tolerant and more closed minded. We seem to live in a dumbed down bubble... I hope videos like yours on this topic begin surfacing and people share them for the sake of out future generations. We cannot let our children down. Thank You!!!

Yes! High-fives!!! You have articulated so many of the things I feel, especially about not understanding the humor in our current culture. I love how your take centers around the arts. (I'm a music teacher.) There is so much out there that has fallen by the wayside that is so refreshing to many people when they actually take the time to seek it out and participate in and create with the arts rather than just consume television. Thank you for this! :-)

I seriously adore you and your videos! J'adore!!! They have been such a blessing to me. I could explain in so many ways why I love them, but I'll just say that you have given me hope that I'm not the only one who feels that our society is quickly falling away from the things that made human culture so wonderful. Where is the respect, decency, humility, patience, kindness, morality, etc, etc...? I personally think the fruit of the Spirit sums things up pretty well as to what we should aspire to having....Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control (from Gal.5:22). So much to say, but I'll stop here. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful views and keeping us motivated :) -Blessings, Shareyah

Thank you Jennifer for sharing your thoughts on such an important topic. I have experienced the "dumbed down" culture first hand through the teenagers that I work with. So few of them see the value in any form of intellectual or artistic pursuit. I often bring different poetry books, craft supplies and music in to share with them. Sometimes I can reach one out of six. I suppose that's better than nothing. Sigh..

I hope this video will receive the audience it so richly deserves, Jennifer. I agree with the comments made by Lori Rees (below) that appreciation of the arts seems to be more prevalent in European cultures. In America, this is too often seen as highbrow, snobbish, or pretentious, rather than what it really is -- life-enriching. I hope you will keep encouraging us to live fuller lives and that you know you have many, many supporters.

Great ideas! If cost is an issue, most public libraries now have museum passes that provide free o reduced fee admission. It makes it easy to go often. Also, I recommend a page-a-day calendar with a different masterpiece each day. I've enjoyed one from the Met in NY now for several years. It give me a way to discover new (to me) artists as well as revisit old "friends".

My kids (teens) on the other hand consume the reality shows and don't seem to have the same attention span to appreciate the arts. (Although both play instruments in a band). Great discussion the Daily Connoisseur! I think a big problem of this "dumbing down" phenomenon is that the arts are so economically inaccessible. Would love to see some programs that make these types of entertainment more accessible to the "everyman" (and woman). The arts definitely help cultivate imagination and new ideas, which are incredibly important in our society. I also think it is important to not dismiss elements of pop culture as simply "stupid" without first making a critical analysis. For example, I think that we often dismiss Miley Cyrus as hyper-sexualized, but I think she actually portrays herself as a satirical comment on women's positions as sex objects in the music industry. But yes, the arts are so so important and so so broad and there is so much to explore! No time for staying on the sofa!

Please write a 4th book (unless your upcoming 3rd book is on this topic) expounding on including the arts in our lives on a daily basis (I realize that you have included chapters of this in your 1st two books and they have truly enhanced my life). Thank you for covering this topic, particularly for those of us who are home-bound due to illness: watching and listening to the arts at home is helpful and brings a bit of beauty into a difficult life. Your views on this are more helpful and far-reaching than I believe you even realize. Thank you!
