Red Dwarf is a British science fiction comedy franchise created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor which primarily consists of a television sitcom that aired on BBC Two between 1988 and 1999, and on Dave since 2009, gaining a cult following.[1] The premise of the series follows the low-ranking technician Dave Lister, who awakens after being in suspended animation for three million years to find he is the last living human, with no crew on board the mining spacecraft Red Dwarf other than Arnold Rimmer, a hologram of Lister's deceased bunkmate, and Cat, a life form which evolved from Lister's pregnant cat.
As of 2020, the cast includes Chris Barrie as Rimmer, Craig Charles as Lister, Danny John-Jules as Cat, Robert Llewellyn as the sanitation droid Kryten, and Norman Lovett as the ship's computer, Holly.
To date, twelve series of the show have aired, in addition to The Promised Land. Four novels were published from 1989 to 1996. Two pilot episodes of an American version of the show were produced but never aired. The magazine The Red Dwarf Smegazine was published from 1992 to 1994.
One of the series' highest accolades came in 1994 when an episode from the sixth series, "Gunmen of the Apocalypse", won an International Emmy Award in the Popular Arts category. In the same year the series was also awarded "Best BBC Comedy Series" at the British Comedy Awards.[2] The series attracted its highest ratings, of more than eight million viewers, during the eighth series in 1999.[3]
The revived series on Dave has consistently delivered some of the highest ratings for non-Public Service Broadcasting commissions in the UK.[4][5][6] The show has been critically acclaimed, and has a Metacritic score of 84/100.[7] Series XI was voted "Best Returning TV Sitcom" and "Comedy of the Year" for 2016 by readers for the British Comedy Guide.[8] In a 2019 ranking by Empire, Red Dwarf came 80 on a list of the 100 best TV shows of all time.[9]

Funny how Chris Barrie uses the phrase "A Prince among men" when he would go on to star in a sitcom of the same name a few years later.
I think the flirting scene was quite cute, but any excuse to have more OG Kochanski.

The funeral scene was incredible and was very important to the Red Dwarf story. It helped define Rimmer more as I feel that there was a lot of confusion over whether the hologram and the formally living Rimmer were the same people. I also always wondered what happened to the crew’s remains.

What was wrong with the extra flirting and the funeral scene? I miss the first two series with their weirdness, loneliness and melancholy?

Most of these were probably cut for time as much as anything else. Episode 1 also had new material written, filmed and added after the initial recording, so they probably cut more from it to fit in those new scenes.

I like the first two series the best, I understand why it went the way it did. But just the three of them is so interesting, very melancholy and lonely indeed. The same premise, a man, a feline humanoid, and a hologram of the man he hated all alone on a massive empty ship, could make for science fiction horror instead of comedy very easily.

... and then some. Top drawer. Sadly her acting skills were not.
I can honestly see why these were deleted, the acts seemed to be playing more to the audience than they were to the cameras

Met Clare Grogan in her early Altered Images days, just before they broke through - they were doing the University Union circuit and did a gig at Strathclyde. I was the Floor Manager at the time.
That cat got style,class and more .The 9:30 reunion was great , just an ageing fan

I've recently watched 2001: A space odyssey and when I saw their uniforms I said "THAT'S THE SAME AS RED DWARF!!" is there a story behind why Red Dwarf have the same uniforms? ....apart from, it's an homage?

Well they were lonely imo so even if just a friend or frienemy, might be sad to think, they just wanted to avoid anxiety and depression knowing someone was close by often, last of the human species.
While I can see why these were edited out it sure was fun to get to see them
here we see Rimmer(s) sitting on multiple chairs, despite being a hologram and not supposed to be able to touch anything; I guess they had to bend their own rules sometimes

Being primarily a show about 3 (then 4) lonely blokes on an oil rig Red Dwarf doesn't get credit for how many stunningly beautiful women there are in the cast. And Clare Grogan is Exhibit A.

When Kochanski joined the series, it was like throwing out a boat anchor on a Ferrari doing 120 MPH. Started watching again when she was written out.

Original katchanski was crapl at acting, then when they brought in new one,, she spoiled the show, same as when they brought the crew back..serious7,8,9 just don't count.. Urrg..they went back to the original format after the fans said they killed it...thank god..

Many of my friends complained too, but I think that those seasons were still great including the new interactions with Kochanski. But ignoring her, there were some epic episodes in these seasons - like the part where they are back on RD and go to prison. It is all super absurd. But maybe my impression could have been different, because I first saw RD with a dubbing.

Funny enough season 6 & 7 was the first I saw. I was about 8-9 years old at the time so tbh for me season 7 brings back a lot of nostalgia and I really enjoy then epsidoes as a result.

It's poorly done, CG cannot act, but I could watch her mangle her lines all day long. I imagine that sort of attractiveness has quite a few enemies amongst the sisters.

I didn't see any of the first series first time round so all of this is new to me, but surely it is Claire Grogan who sings the theme song, although her name doesn't appear in the credits.

yeah it's written pretty weirdly. I think it's clearer with commas - 'this extended scene shows why, in the final episode, Lister appears to select the wrong rimmer for deletion'
This is not a video suitable for this with rose tin tent memories of this in production. Yikes.
Best two episodes.. One were they think they were in a video game and Timothy small rips piss out of em.. And ..better than life..virtual reality.. Rimmer spoils it.. Also gunmen of the apocalypse... Another video game..serious7,8,9 should never have been made...bringing kotchanski back then the nanobots rebuild red dwarf,, shite..
