Thanks Mike, I just did the steering cylinders on my 1967 580CK. Your newer machine looks much the same but with better gland rod seals. Look for a small hole through the side of the cylinder near the end under the snap ring grove that makes taking out the snap ring easy. Just poke a small wire up and it lifts the snap ring out. You don't need to take the hoses or cylinder off the tractor, just pull the outer ball and rod loose like you did.

hey Mike. Thanks for the video. I noticed the custom dash and new gauges at the end. I need to do that after I fix the steering cylinders. I'm going to see if you have any other videos fixing the 580c. I should make some of my own so we can keep these machines running!

I love watching your content and I really am inspired by you to keep moving forward on my own 580c. I bought a backhoe that was reportedly "freshly rebuilt, and ready to go to work!!" So far I have redone the steering, replaced all the hydrolic seals, completly rebuilt the engine, replaced about half of the hydrolic hoses, redone 30% of the wiring, next week I'm going to go through the brake system, and I have a tire to replace on it. And the list goes on and on. Keep up the good work and thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with us. I will continue to keep watching.

@@marinetrax I have now had my hoe back together for a few months and have put it to work. It hasn't missed a beat and I'm very happy with it. It does everything I need it to do and as time goes on I'm sure I'll still be tweaking on this and that but as far as functionality it is doing the job for now. Good luck with yours.

Hydrostatics are nice to use loading trucks ect. ,but they are terrible on fuel to pull anything . It is just an oil pump turning a gear and when the oil pressure goes down the gear won't turn

When you were assembling the piston on the rod , you said there was some goober on the threads , as you attempted to install the nut , that WAS NOT/ IS NOT goober , it is old dried up LOCKTIGHT & should be removed with wire brush , & then the thread & nut cleaned with lacquer thinner or brake cleaner to remove ALL oil , & Red lock Tight re-applied, then re-torqued , so that nut does NOT come loose , for if it does you will destroy the cylinder ! ! ! SO at your nearest opportunity, take it apart again, & do so ! And as with any hydraulic cyl if there are threads in the end of it clean them also & use silicon, or teflon past to seal it so water will not seep in & rust !

the piston is treaded with an o ring inside. also the nut on the end is like a double nut plus the manual doesnt call for locktight just 130 ft/lb a double nut i dont think needs locktight

Hi Mike. Have to do the left side steering cylinder on my 79 C. I am wondering if fluid will continue to leak our after disconnecting the lines - is some sort of plugging required as part of the process. Also would like to know where you picked up the rebuild kit, if you mined me asking. Really like the channel. Cheers.

I am rebuilding one of the steering cylinders on my Case 580E Forklift .... I have the outer retainer removed.... but for the life of me I can't figure out now to get that spacer out (the one that covers the inside retaining ring). The manual says to push the "gland" back in about 1 inch... but I cannot get it to budge.

@@herrmc the gland should move, just make sure you move the gland while not touching the spacer. i think i used a screwdriver on one to remove the spacer, you should be able to get to the clip without moving the gland and just removing the spacer with a flat screwdriver or pick. its pretty tight, but mine spacer was plastic

Good grief man , NEVER beat on the ty-rod end bolt , without the nut on it - to protect the thread , or you may NEVER get the nut back on it, & preferably put something up against it to hit , & use a big enough hammer to only hit it “1” time ! I had to put a good hydraulic jack under mine , lifting the wheel of the ground & get an assistant to hold a rebar welded to a 3/4’ thick plate so that I could pound on it with a 8 lb sleg hammer , took about 10-12 serious hits

So what was the issue? My steering wheel just turns around in circles hardly turning the wheels. Is this hydraulic pump issue or internal seals? Thanks

turn the wheel all the way to the right and disconnect hose at rod end of left cylinder. start the engine and turn the steering wheel right and see if it leaks. if it leaks then seal is bad do the same thing turning to the left. if the seals are bad it will leak

@@mikekisch5563 thanks so much for the speedy reply. My Backhoe only has one cylinder on the right. The wheels wont turn. I can turn the steering wheel around and around and the wheels will only move maybe an inch. When the machine is driving forward, I can turn to the right but I have to keep turning the steering wheel flat out around and around to get it to turn while going forward. IF that makes sense. Dont know if its a hydraulic issue, internal seals, pressure valves, spools etc. NOTHING helpful in the workshop manual.

  • @marinetrax

So, if I turn the steering wheel really fast, I can get the tyres to turn left and right. But turning the steering wheel normally they dont want to move. You have to really spin the steering around to get them to move.

@@marinetrax the test will still work just turn all the way to the right and take off the line that wont have pressure then turn the steering wheel if the internal seal is bad the fluid will leak past the internal seal and come out the other port on the cylinder if the control valve is bad then pressure will come out the line itself and not the cylinder
