REBEL1100: 2021 Honda Rebel 1100 - USA OWNER Initial Ride Review

Today is March 9, 2021, and I'm finally riding my new 2021 Honda Rebel 1100 home from the dealer! Skip to the end of this description for clickable time indexes. #rebel1100 #rebel1100dct #hondarebel1100
I put my deposit down on the new CMX1100 last December when I picked up my CT125. I was one of the very first deliveries in Texas, but I was swamped with work and had to wait over 2 weeks to pick up my new toy. The wait is over now, and I'm finally at the dealer for the unboxing video and to ride it home!
The Rebel 1100's ergonomics are similar to the Rebel 300/500, but the rider triangle feels a bit more stretched out and the bike is nearly 100 pounds heavier. The CMX1100 DCT weighs 509 pounds (wet), where the CMX500A only weighs 414 pounds. The handlebars seem a bit further forward on the 1100 than the smaller Rebel's, but the 1100's seat height is almost identical at 27.5" (the smaller Rebel sits at 27.2"). Rake, trail, and suspension travel are nearly identical as well, but the1100 has higher-quality adjustable dampers on both ends.
The power department is where things really differ... the 1100 has nearly double the power and torque, and it's available at lower RPM's. The Rebel 1100 weighs ~95 pounds more than the 500, but double the power and torque make all the difference in ride personality. The 1100 shares the same basic engine as the Africa Twin 1100, but the Rebel's motor has a new crank, heavier flywheel, and it's tuned for more midrange punch and less top-end power. The DCT model has a very smooth 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, so it's a "twist-and-go" affair. And boy... it really GOES! Here are some quick specifications for reference:

    Thx! Yep, that's the plan... I'm riding the Super Cub on the Scooter Cannonball Run this July. I'll be riding with Adrian and at least 1-2 others from the Texas area... my son might be tagging along as well. That adventure will be about 9200 miles round trip. I'll be riding from Houston to Bar Harbor, ME where the Cannonball starts, and then 4500 miles across the country to Eureka, CA where it ends. When we're done with that, we'll be meandering our way back from CA to TX. That's gonna be a butt-number, for sure! 🤣👍 --QM

    It sucks that you are not allowed to filter through the traffic. I live in the UK and we are allowed to filter. Saves so much time. In many cities bikes and scooters are allowed in the bus lanes which is absolutely fantastic. Happy and safe riding.

    Oh man, I am jealous. Can't wait to get one of these. I just got back into riding after a 7-year break. Picked up an ADV150 (first one in Indiana) in September. I love the bike, but I'm ready to get back to something with more power. Stay safe!

    Exactly! It's going to be an interesting bike, for sure. The bike handles very good for a cruiser. I took it out for a back road flogging last Saturday, and I was railing it through some sweeping corners at 80-90 MPH... no problems or quirks, just rail-straight tracking. I'll probably keep the add-ons as simple and functional as possible to retain the cruiser aesthetic. I just need the fender rack and the pannier supports so I can haul my camping gear and a stubby windscreen to take the wind pressure off of my chest. I will probably ask KipMoto to build a trailer mount so I can pull my SherpaX trailer behind it... that solves all of the hauling chores in one shot! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    Love your videos QM!! I have either saved or shared just about all of them! I pick up my CMX 1100 DCT tomorrow morning, and I hope that I can get some sleep tonight!!! I opted for the Radiant Cycles Shorty GP with baffle, and I will swap it out asap and hope for the best as far as sound, performance and looks! Longevity is one of those wait and see things. I know that you went with the Coffman Shorty that is awesome and ✅ checks all of the boxes! 🏍️💨👍🏾

    Congrats on your new Rebel 1100 DCT! The Radiant Cycles Shorty is a decent muffler, but several owners have reported that the fit and finish is questionable and they rust easily. I prefer the Coffman's Shorty exhaust because they are made of 100% stainless-steel and then ceramic powder coated... they're tough as nails!     @@QuasiMotard Thank you! I have a can of matte finish clear coat which I will apply to the Shorty GP to hopefully help stave off the rust! Also, I purchased a Black Clamp from COFFMAN’S for a reasonable price, because the silver clamp that’s included with the muffler looks horrible!! Thanks again. 🏍️💨

    I got mine two days ago. I absolutely love it. Upset it is 18 degrees right now so I can't ride. I am a brand new rider and I feel very comfortable on it. I am 6'1 and 300lbs. The seating position feels fine to me. The shocks felt fine as we have horrible roads in Rhode Island but never felt like I was going to lose control.

    Congrats on your new Rebel 1100! I'm having an absolute blast on mine... the torque is a LOT of fun to play with around town. I've noticed that the rear suspension can be a bit harsh over sharp/tall bumps, but I'm not sure if anything can be done to remedy that issue. There is only 3.7" of travel to work with, so it has to be damped aggressively or it'll bottom out. Cheers! 👍 --QM

    HAHAhahaaa... 🤣 I know, right?! I'm up to 21 bikes in the garage now, but there is no way that I was going to pass this one up! I'm out of the break-in period now, so I'm starting to play with the torque and have some fun with it. This thing really scoots with that 72 lb-ft of torque at 4750 RPM. I'm uploading another full-day ride vlog now with raw audio (no sound processing that removes background noise to enhance speech), so you'll be able to hear more of the bike's true sound. That'll make you want it even more! 😉👍 --QM

    wow, it is automatic and no clutch, that would feel a little strange for me at first but I said that about cars as well less to think about just enjoy the ride :)..the clutch has always been my safety in any situation so I guess I would feel naked on the first ride, but love it and miss it after a good run :) I bet you going to have a lot of fun on this one it is a beauty

    The DCT takes a little bit of "re-learning", but it becomes second nature after a few hours. I have lots of scooters and the Can-Am Ryker, so I'm accustomed to twist-and-go riding. I still reach for the clutch at least a few times every time I ride it, though! 😉👍 --QM

    Houston riding is dangerous enough, let alone during rush hour. I have to take I-45 but I try to avoid it the best I can just in case another Karen McTikTok in a Subaru confuses her left from her rights again. I wish you safe travels. Say.... Do you know of any safe fun roads around Houston? I hear most are far north in the Sam Houston National Forest. That's a little far from me since I'm in Galveston County.

    🤣 Karen McTickTok... that's funny! I usually ride out west of Katy on the rural FM roads (e.g., FM359, FM2780 out northwest, or 1488, 150, 156 north toward Sam Houston National Forest). You're father south, so that's a longer haul for sure. You could ride up Hwy6 and into some nice country roads near Wharton and Eagle Lake. When I decide to go exploring, I will use a paper map (usually Butler G2) to look for twisty rural highways away from the Interstates. The best roads are usually outside of the metro areas and near small towns or farms (e.g., FM or RR roads). You can do the same thing with Google Maps, but it's harder to zoom in/out and see all of a path on the same page. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    Thanks, Eric! I'll have a more in-depth walk-around review coming soon. I've been recording daily commute vlogs on it, and I took it out on the back roads Saturday to complete the break-in miles. The bike handles really well for a cruiser... I was railing it through sweeping corners at 80-90 MPH without any fuss... just rail-straight tracking.     Did you sort the tank out? I am looking at one of these to upgrade from my Shadow Phantom. I am worried about the reach and trying to decide between the manual or DCT as I use the clutch a lot and without It and just a brake I don't want to wipe out. This bike seems to have alll the accessories I wish my current bike had.

    Thanks for the feedback! The exhaust note sounds quite good on this bike for a factory muffler. My audio processing in Adobe Premiere actually reduces much the rumble and background noise, so what you hear in the video isn't quite as deep as the actual sound. I am editing and uploading a couple of commute and ride videos without the audio processing so you'll be able to hear more of the engine and exhaust... so stay tuned! Cheers! 👍 --QM

    If I’m reaching for the handle bars for too long I start hurting between my shoulders. So, it sounds like risers would help. Let us know how good the headlight works at night around curves. I’ve heard some complaints about it. For me, I would have to have some Highway pegs so I could stretch my legs on longer rides. I have a Harley Street Glide right now but, I’m getting older and may have to downsize. I’m looking hard at this bike. I rode Honda’s back in the 80’s and loved them. I think the aftermarket will make a lot of accessories for this bike. Enjoy and thank you for the video.

    I feel your pain! I have a nerve or circulation issue (hereditary) in my neck and shoulders that causes my hands to go numb within just a minute or two when my arms are stretched out in front of me. Even while driving a car, I need to alternate hands on the wheel every minute or two to prevent complete numbness and burning in my hands. I've just learned to live with it for the past 25+ years and I adapt my riding/driving habits to compensate for it. I'm planning to install setback risers to bring the handlebars back about 1-2", and I'll also be installing an engine/crash guard when they become available. I'll probably put a set of fold-up highway pegs on the crash bar so I can stretch out my legs on the long rides. I'll also mount a set of Denali D4 driving lights on the crash bar to add a LOT of nighttime illumination. The OEM headlight is actually quite good on both low and high beam, but it does have a lack of close/local fill near the bike. The beam width is good and the projector lenses give a clean cutoff so all of the usable light is on the road instead of wasted as vertical scatter. I have a couple of early morning commute videos in the editing queue now, so you'll be able to see the headlight in action. Cheers! 👍 --QM

    Traffic is much better without the clutch and shifting,, I might be wrong but the tank needs to be tighten.. nice bike

    Agreed! I'm already enjoying the DCT for trundling along in commuter traffic. It performs very well and shifts almost imperceptibly. The only glitch that I've found so far is that the 3rd to 2nd gear downshift while rounding slow corners can be a bit intrusive. I've started manually downshifting before the corners to avoid the sudden deceleration and line change. Cheers! 👍 --QM

    The cruise "enable" light is orange whenever the system is turned on; it goes out when the cruise it turned off. That orange light triggers my OCD because orange means "error", right?! 🤣👍 --QM

    Saw a review of the new Indian Bobber series which highlighted the digital speedometer display which included GPS. What is the capabilities of the Rebel's display?

    I saw that review as well! The trend for onboard navigation seems to be going toward the app-connected gauges, where the bike's display is tethered to an app on a smart phone. The phone runs the navigation app (usually leveraging Google's routing in the background), and the bike's display acts as the HUD. The Rebel doesn't offer that functionality, but I do have a similar unit that I've already mounted on my handlebars... it's the Beeline Moto GPS: ridebeeline.refr.cc/aaronb . The Beeline is a small, round, monochrome reverse-LCD gauge that does the exact same thing as the Indian and Royal Enfield gauges... it displays nav instructions from a smartphone app. You can see it on my Honda CB500F in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/laR1zbqsd7XHlbw.html , and I'll be posting a few videos of is on my Rebel soon. The Rebel's new LCD gauge doesn't have any navigation functions, but the onboard computer has all of the typical features. There are A/B trip meters, A/B average fuel consumption, realtime consumption, range (distance-to-empty), thermometer with ice warning, clock, etc. I'm still learning the menus so I can navigate all of the functions from motor memory... it's a little daunting to switch cursor functions, change settings, change cursor back, toggle, rub my head, pat my stomach, tap my left foot, etc, etc... all while navigating through homicidal cagers at 70 MPH.     Since the msrp are priced at $9,999, how much wiggle room we have to negotiate with the Dealer? 10 to 20%?

    I would assume zero wiggle room because this is a new model, and it's already in high demand. I don't know of any dealers that will negotiate a lower price if they already have a waiting list of buyers at full MSRP. If there are any leftovers sitting around on the dealer floors next year, then there might be some room to negotiate. --QM

    I love the no sheild look. I know benefits of the sheild, but I don't think I'm going to get one. When I get the Ryker, it'll be my first bike of any kind and I want to get the full un-spoiled experience. I was going to get a Iron 883; my dream bike, before I got hurt in Iraq. So this Ryker will be my 883. Lol

    Nope... no lane filtering in Texas. We've had proposed legislation for over 10 years that could legalize it, but it's never made it into reality yet. The bigger hurdle would be reeducating our territorial, homicidal cagers down here... the will actively try to wreck you if they see you filtering through. If they have to wait, then EVERYONE should have to wait! 😉👍 --QM

    BAD TO THE BONE!!! *hears music - nice - can you explain the handbrake/e brake - know they have them on nc750 africa twin but never seen them used......... shame you cant lane split - when is the factory chimney coming off for a vance and hines or akra :D - didnt know it had cruise either - enjoy

    I'll probably upgrade the factory exhaust when Akrapovič has something available. I'd like to hear a comparison between a few different cans first because I plan to tour with this bike. Loud exhausts just ruin that experience, in my opinion, anyway. I have a few commute videos in the queue now, and I'll be making a more in-depth review if the bike next week. I'm headed out for a 3-4 day motocamp on the little CT125 on Thursday, so I'm already in the planning phase for that trip. 😉👍 --QM

    Thanks! I have considered purchasing the ZERO SR or SR/F over the past couple of years... I even went to test ride one, and they are AMAZING! Unfortunately, most of my rides would outpace the battery capacity. My "normal" commutes around the Houston area are 75-120 miles/day, and longer destinations (or multiple stops) can sometimes top 150 miles in a single day. The price tag has been the next hurdle... I don't like spending more than $12-15K USD on my bikes, and the ZERO's are in excess of $20K USD after taxes... ouch! Maybe some day soon when the electric bikes are more common (less expensive) and the battery capacity can reach 175-200 miles of real-world riding... then I'll add one to the fleet. Cheers! 👍 --QM

    @@QuasiMotard Hi, I just got my rebel today and I can tell you that the tank is not perfectly rigid and it is apparently quite normal because of the way the tank is attached to the frame. Thanks

    Wish granted! I have a couple of commute videos and a weekend back road ride that I'll be posting in the next day or two. I won't be editing out the blank spaces (time compression) between thoughts, and I won't apply any audio processing to remove noise.     I haven't ridden the 1200 Sportster, so I can't give any educated opinions. I owned two 883 Sportsters many years ago, but those would be completely different comparisons (e.g., smaller engines, different ergonomics, etc). I might see if I can take a test ride of the 1200 at one of the local H-D dealers in town to check it out. Another one that interests me is the Indian Scout Bobber (same price point, engine size, etc). All of the reviews and opinions that I present on my channel are for machines and equipment that I own, so the reviews come from an owner's perspective and not just a quick test ride. You learn a lot about a machine when you live with it day to day. Cheers! 👍 --QM

    Howdy, neighbor! (I presume you're from Houston) Short answer: Texas isn't motorcycle-friendly... period... or bicycles, or pedestrians for that matter. Long answer: I've been riding on the streets for 35+ years, so my riding habits have adapted to compensate for oblivious cagers on cell phones and the hyper-aggressive, homicidal types that try to bully and intimidate anything smaller than the 5000-pound SUV that they are piloting. I've traveled nearly 2M miles on two wheels, and I've never been down on the street (knock on wood). Plenty of close calls and near-death experiences, but no downs or crashes. I treat riding like a chess game... always thinking 2-3 moves ahead and always leaving myself an escape route whenever possible. I just assume that people can't see me (or just don't care), and that they are ALWAYS trying to kill me. So, when that doesn't happen, then I'm just ahead of the game. 😉 While traveling in town on the highways, I typically use the HOV lanes when they are available. Even if they are paid toll lanes, it's worth the extra cost to reduce the risk factors and the constant vehicle shuffling that occurs in the main lanes. I don't mind paying an extra dollar or two just to keep my distance from the tailgaters and bumper biting that is so common here in Houston. When I'm traveling on the surface streets, I always vary my lane positions and I stay away from the outside lanes near intersections (right turn violators and red light runners). When I take my longer road trips, I try to pick the back roads and avoid the super slabs as much as possible... during the daytime, anyway. Night rides are relatively safer on the super slabs because there is less chance of having a wildlife encounter. Back roads and rural highways are more fun during the daytime, and there is less traffic to negotiate. I always ride with my high beams on during daylight hours, and I try to maintain a 5-10 MPH overtake rate on traffic around me. Movement is visibility, and not being visible on a motorcycle in traffic is deadly. As counterintuitive as it sounds, there is safety in relative speed vs nearby vehicles (old law enforcement driving training). So, if you're new to riding, Houston can be a daunting place to learn. I strongly suggest taking the MSF basic rider's course (required for your "M" endorsement), and also some MSF advanced rider courses to give you additional skills to keep yourself out of harm's way.     @@QuasiMotard yea, I've just almost been side swiped in my tacoma. Once by a cop texting on his phone! So I could imagine being on a smaller bike is worse. Thanks for your opinion. I was planning on using the HOV to my advantage and keeping to feeders, or side streets while I become more comfortable on the bike.

    Did you put pullback risers on this bike yet? If so, which ones and did you need to reroute or replace cables &/or brake line?

    No, I haven't found the correct risers for my Rebel 1100 quite yet. These bars are 1" diameter (25.4mm) instead of 7/8" (22.2mm) like other Rebels have. I just saw a new video posted by a Japanese Rebel 1100 owner ( Satoshi , @Rebel 1100 Bike CHANNEL) where he installed a set of "R's Gear" setback risers. His channel and the video description is all in Japanese, so I'm having trouble using Google Translate to make sense of things. I haven't been able to find that manufacturer with web searches or on Webike Japan ( japan.webike.net )... but I'll keep digging! Cheers! 👍 --QM

    It's a challenge, that's for certain! Commuting in Houston's 100-degree temperatures with high humidity is nearly suicidal sometimes. Being stuck behind stopped traffic with 120°+ temps radiating up from the pavement and other vehicles really sucks. 👍 --QM

    Congrats on your new Rebel! Honda's DCT is very good, and I think it suits the Rebel's moderately-sporty cruiser attitude very well. I have plenty of other standard transmission motorcycles whenever I want to shift gears. When I'm in the mood to relax and cruise down the highway or take extended tours on the back roads, I'm perfectly content to let the DCT handle the clutch and shift chores for me. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    It's not legal here in Texas, but I will filter occasionally. The real problem is all of the aggressive, territorial cagers down here that actively try to wreck you for passing them. They think that if they need to wait, then EVERYONE else needs to wait, regardless of how much empty space there is around them. Silly, closed-minded perspectives from people trapped in cages. 😉👍 --QM

    That's a good question! I haven't torn into my Rebel yet to investigate, but a few other Rebel owners have replied saying that their tanks also wiggle a bit. I suspect that Honda has loose rubber pads in there to allow the tank to flex a bit... maybe to avoid agitating the fuel in the tank? I'll let you know what I figure out. 👍 --QM

    @@lyncoors We've been dealing with crazy winds lately, too... 18-25 MPH steady with gusts in the 30+ range for the past week or so. The Rebel 1100 handles crosswinds very well... it's low and heavy enough that it doesn't get blown around as much as some of my other bikes. 👍 --QM

    Apparently, that tank wobble/wiggle is "normal". Several other Rebel owners have commented that their tanks also feel a little loose, although maybe not as loose as mine. I will be pulling the seat and tank soon to add some electronic accessories on the bike, so I'll be sure to take a good look around at the mounts to see if something is loose or missing.     Agreed! We didn't split lanes often on the little Cubs while we were there... too many aggressive cagers weaving and hugging the lane markers. California's rural highways are spectacular with tons of hills and curves! 😉👍 --QM

    So, by that logic... Audi's and Lamborghini's with DCT transmissions, and Porsche's with PDK's, are all just Nissan Sentras with CVT rubber-band tranny's? 🤣 I think you're missing the principle of a DCT: Dual Clutch Transmission. It's a traditional 6-speed gearbox, but it has twin clutch packs that keep two different gears engaged at the same time with only one driving the transmission output shaft. The computer takes care of the shifting and clutch operation, so it's buttery smooth. You can ride in fully automatic mode, full manual mode, or a hybrid between the two. The beauty of the system is that you never scorch your clutch, you never miss a shift, and you never need to hunt for the correct gear... the computer takes care of everything... and you can override up/down shifts as needed. Honda has been using the DCT in their motorcycles for over 10 years, and they have proven to be very durable. Clutch life is phenomenal as well... many owners have reported 120K+ miles with zero transmission or clutch maintenance. 😉👍 --QM

    Yep, Houston has some nasty roads. I have a couple of commute videos that I'll be posting soon, and I took the Rebel on some REALLY SH*TTY roads. A few of the pavement seams bounced me out of the saddle... wasn't prepared for that little issue. Now I know what to watch out for with the Rebel and I'll be more careful in the future. It's hard to stand up off the seat because of the mid-controls... feet are forward of hips, so you need to pull up using the handlebars... not ideal. 👍 --QM

    The slowest 1100 cc bike ever made in the history of the planet, top speed 99mph my first bike was a 330 cc and it had more top speed .. so disappointed in Honda :(

    LOL... its far from slow! The speed nanny is annoying, but it's probably a legal or a EURO-5 thing. My Can-Am Ryker had the same limit, but that was fixed with an ECU flash... the same will be true for the Rebel 1100 very soon. --QM
