2021 Honda Rebel 1100: Learning the DCT Quirks and Ridability Issues

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today is Thursday, March 11, 2021, and I'm still putting break-in miles on my new 2021 Honda Rebel 1100 DCT. Skip to the end of this description for clickable time indexes. #rebel1100 #hondarebel1100 #cmx1100
Beeline Moto GPS: beeline.co/pages/beeline-moto
I ordered my Honda accessories for the Rebel, but they won't be available until late March and into late April. In the meanwhile, I have added the Grip Puppies foam overgrips to add more girth and vibration insulation to the factory grips, and I have mounted my Beeline Moto GPS unit.
The Rebel 1100 performs very well, and I'm getting more comfortable with its personality and the DCT transmission. The DCT has a few quirks, but the convenience factor and overall performance is a big win, in my opinion. The DCT makes trundling along in city traffic much easier because you're never feathering a clutch or hunting for the correct gear at the last second... just roll the throttle and GO!
My next video in this series will be the installation of the CRG Hindsight Lane Splitter mirrors and the AirHawk Cruiser R seat cushion. Cheers! 😉👍
Time indexes:
0:00 Engine startup and exhaust sounds
1:49 No accessories are available yet!
2:52 First add-ons are Grip Puppies and Beeline Moto GPS
4:47 The Rebel's horn SUCKS! Denali SoundBomb is next!
6:13 I need handlebar setback risers to give 1-2" more reach
8:05 DCT impressions and quirks
9:57 First refuel, MPG, and top speed of only 99 MPH?
11:04 Beeline Moto looks GREAT on the Rebel's bars!
13:10 The EZ Tag store is CLOSED!
13:57 Quick 0-60 blast at 70% throttle in "normal" mode
19:32 Heading back home to Katy
20:40 Beeline has a nervous tick today
22:53 Fumbling through the mode menus, suspension impressions

    I hope that DCT’s get popular and spread among other manufacturers. I would like to start riding motorcycles, and a DCT is a very attractive option as there is so much to learn and get use to as a new rider. If you can eliminate work and distractions, why not make more automatic motorcycles? I think a lot of potential riders would agree.

    I have the 700 S DCT and the main reason is I have trouble with my hips legs with my left foot " going to sleep " so could not ride a manual bike . I just wish they had the modern ECU as it changes gear when cornering sometimes which is a bit un-nerving. The Africa twin is too tall for me but has a system which also measures lean/traction and will not try to change gear when cornering and I think it has been transferred to the Rebel so I just need to win the lottery to buy one.

    Agreed! I'd love it if Honda would put this motor in a naked bike like the CB-series with standard-bike ergonomics and good suspension (e.g., fully-adjustable USD forks and rear monoshock). Leave the full tune on it so it has full top-end power, and give it a full 6-axis IMU for cornering-sensitive ABS and other goodies. That would be an extremely fun machine to ride. Cheers! 👍 --QM

    I got the DCT for the wife and I think this bike is awesome. It handles great I went to a parking lot and did small circles easier on any bike I’ve ridden. I like the way the DCT works you are supposed to slow ( apply break) down before the corner not threw it and it works perfectly. Also my tank is “loose” but it’s not because the bolts are loose I checked it it’s in rubber bushings so it’s normal IMO

    Man that exhaust is so huge.. I would wait until they come out with good aftermarket exhaust systems and replace that one if it were mine. But not to an up swept exhaust that would prevent putting on soft bags for that side. Not an upswept exhaust fan here for that reason. Also, I don't care what it looks like but I would get a National Cycle Plexistar windshield for that. They can be quickly removed when you don't need it. Those big windshields are so sweet on long trips. 😎My only problem with the bike is tank size and range other than that huge exhaust. No good pics are available showing what that OEM Honda fairing looks like on the riders side or behind it. 😁 Good video

  • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    3 жыл бұрын

    Agreed on all points! The OEM exhaust is a brick... probably due to emissions and noise requirements. I am searching for a smaller, straight exhaust (not upswept) so it won't interfere with the right pannier. I'll probably go through a couple of windscreens before I settle on the "right" one for my needs. The first screen will probably be a National Cycle, and then I'll try out a couple of others to get the right height and appearance. The Honda OEM fairing/windscreen combo looks too clumsy... too much like a H-D wannabe. The handguard extensions might be nice, but it detracts too much from the naked cruiser look, IMHO. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    @@QuasiMotard if you Google the national cycle Plexistar windshield, they have a pic or 2.. Like I say, I don't care after a few days what it looks like. I just love the windless comfort those things give. It blocks below the handlebars also. They are even fine to look through when you want to duck down out of rain drops. Mine were all fairing sized ones but no tint. I could light a cigarette behind mine 😂. Take it off in like 5 minutes. If I planned a trip longer than a few hours then I would definitely put the big shield on. Not caring about what it looked like. But a smaller one would be nice for a day ride it commuting 👍google (national cycle N8513-03) model on a Harley shown in pics. That's the bigger one 😂

    That horn 😆. I've heard it mentioned that if you put it in manual mode and shift down to 5th it will bypass the speed limiter. Just something to try if you wanted to. I'd be torn between the manual and DCT. They seem to have it down good and I could definitely see the benefits. The thing I like the most is they give the option of both on the bikes they have it on and I like that they give you the choice.

    That's a good question! The only colors available for 2021 in the USA market are the "Metallic Black" (more of a silver/black) and the "Bordeaux Red Metallic": powersports.honda.com/street/cruiser/rebel-1100 . Other markets might receive other colorways, so the parts would be interchangeable. However, it would probably be cheaper (and smarter) to wait until 2022 or another year because Honda frequently releases alternative colors the following year. Replacing the fenders on a 2021 might not be too expensive, but the tank won't be cheap at all. Cheers! 👍 --QM

  • @QuasiMotard

    Yes, the Rebel 1100 shares the same basic engine as the Africa Twin 1100. The Rebel's motor has a different crankshaft with 30% more flywheel mass, and it also uses different camshaft and ignition timing to give it more midrange power (less top-end horsepower). I'm definitely planning to add a radiator guard, engine/crash guard, and a small windscreen. I have already replaced the mirrors with the CRG Hindsight Lane Splitter mirrors... a video on that will be uploaded later today. The GPS that I have on the handlebars is the Beeline Moto GPS ( ridebeeline.refr.cc/aaronb ). It was misbehaving during this video, but I upgraded the software later that night and it seems to be working properly again. The horn will be replaced ASAP! That thing is ridiculously whimpy... Vance & Hines has a exhaust coming out soon for this bike, and SpeedoHealer to disable the 100mph speed restriction, you can replace the horn with aftermarket horns, I believe Rebel 500 specific wind shields shod also fit the Rebel 1100 Point being, there are already a ton of parts out there that should work with the Rebel 1100.

    That's a good observation, sir! You are correct... the DCT always shifts early at low throttle positions for smooth cruising and low fuel consumption. At higher throttle positions, it will hold the gears longer, and it also downshifts earlier (adaptive based on the previous few seconds of riding behavior). I will be riding it a little harder now that I'm out of the break-in period. I'll be sure to do a few full-throttle roll-on tests from top gear to see how fast it downshifts. Those tests will be done in "standard" mode and also from "sport" mode from a few different speeds so we can compare the differences in DCT timings. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

  • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    Жыл бұрын

    Ergonomically, the Rebel should be a decent fit for someone who is 5'11", but the leg position might be a bit cramped without adding footpeg extensions. The Rebel 1100 is fairly heavy at ~500-520 pounds, but it wears its weight fairly low and isn't difficult to handle. However, the 1100's power and torque could get a new rider into trouble if they aren't smooth with the throttle. I've heard that many new-ish Rebel 1100 DCT owners have left their bikes in "rain" mode to reduce the throttle response and engine power. After they become more comfortable with the bike's power and weight, then switching out of "rain" to "normal" or "sport" modes isn't a problem. Cheers! 😉👍

  • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I'm very aware of what the little blue light means. If that annoys oncoming motorists during daylight hours, then that means that they see me... objective accomplished! Using high beams during daylight hours, whether on a motorcycle or other cars, is not blinding to oncoming vehicles because of the relative light levels compared to sunlight. I always dip to low beams during dusk or nighttime hours to avoid blinding oncoming vehicles. It is a common and recommended practice in the United States for motorcyclists to ride with their high beams on during daylight hours. It adds more forward conspicuity so cagers can see us. I've been riding on the streets and practicing this for nearly 4 decades and nearly 2M miles, and it's even taught in MSF courses now. --QM

Unless you are ready to perform some major surgery in front of the bike I doubt very much that any type of bar riser would work. Do they work like the CVT on the silver wing ?

  • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    3 жыл бұрын

    No, the DCT and CVT are completely different systems. DCT uses a traditional 6-speed transmission that has two separate clutches that are computer-controlled to manage all of the shifting. Here is a detailed video on the DCT operation: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hYib2KZrZLrRfMo.html . A traditional scooter CVT (technically a "Reeves-type" drive) uses a belt and two sets of pulleys that vary their widths to achieve the different drive ratios. The CVT relies on a centrifugal clutch to engage the final drive gears. Here is a great demonstration of a scooter CVT in action: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYp9u6SSlc7IgKw.html (you might want to mute your speakers before playing that one). Cheers! 👍 --QM

  • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    3 жыл бұрын

    It does have a minimal radiator guard, but I'll be upgrading that with a better screen to keep the big bugs and rocks out of there. To be fair, all motorcycles have the radiator behind the front wheel somewhere. The shortfall in the Rebel 1100's case is that the front fender is very short in the back, so that will allow a lot of over-spray and crap to fling up from the tire into the exhaust headers and the radiator area. I plan to install a rubber or plastic fender extender on there to deflect more road junk. 👍 --QM

    Would you get a “DCT” again?

  • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    Жыл бұрын

    ABSOLUTELY! The DCT suits the cruiser ethos very well, and it rarely leaves me wanting a clutch. The only times when I notice the DCT (or get annoyed with it) is when I'm trundling along slowly with variable-speed traffic under 10-15 MPH. The DCT can get stuck between 1st and 2nd gear, making the throttle a bit hitchy when paired with the driveline lash (chain slack, etc.). Otherwise, I switch to "sport" or "custom" mode to change throttle response and DCT timings to suit my ride preferences. I seldom use "manual" mode to shift this DCT because the automatic mode really is that good... almost telepathic on the upshifts... right when I'd do it myself. Both upshifts and downshifts can be selected manually with the trigger levers while in automatic mode, and then the computer takes over again after you stabilize the throttle or acceleration curve for about 3 seconds. It's really slick! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

The engine and transmission are excellent for cruising or touring moderate distances (e.g., day rides). Long-distance touring on the Rebel is hampered somewhat by the relatively cramped ergonomics and the rear suspension, but that hasn't stopped me from taking cross-country trips with it!
