I appreciate you opinion and thanks for sharing. I almost believed you and didn't get my DCT Rebel. I'm so glad I didn't. Picked it up this week and it's amazing. I hate manual cars and now I hate manual bikes. You should really learn how to set the DCT in the user setting to max and it'll hold the gears. Or better yet use the paddle shifters when it needs to be changed. It's a masterpiece. Long live the Honda DCT!

I have a manual and my girlfriend has the automatic and I’ve ridden hers just to see what dct is like and hers is super smooth shifting to the point I was really impressed. You almost certainly have something wrong with yours. I would take it to the dealership and have the trans looked at because my girlfriends 1100 dct shifts like a Cadillac. I would definitely have that looked at.

The only thing wrong with her bike is the owner. She's just been used to a manual for so long that she can't grasp something new and foreign to her. I own a 2017 Honda CTX700 with the DCT and it shifts like butter. Sure it clunks into gear and during shifts but that's just the nature of the DCT being a geared automatic over clutches found in vehicles. I think it's so sad to see bikes get bad reviews by diseased people like this just cause they can't wrap there heads around new technology.

Came here to say this exact same thing, I worked at a local shop where we had a NC750 trade-in with a defective DCT/traction control that "clunked", previous owner got it used as/is and wanted rid of it, turns out it was was an easy fix for Honda, but we ended up taking a slight loss reselling it. It shouldn't clunk unless it's got a defective damaged clutch or traction control, thumping clunking and clicking are all the sounds those make when they're bad usually, or just wind up in D without giving you power in any setting.

That being said, not everyone likes the DCT even when they're working perfectly. I'm a big dude and they feel scootery and I've never drove anything above the 750 but it is deceptive because every scooter I've been on I could just whip that throttle and bog it down and go, you do that on anything over a 500 even though everything in your brain is going "This is a scooter! Do the scooter rules!" and you're gonna have a bad day. lol

I will ride it a while longer and see if the shifting gets smoother. This is my first time with a DCT, and the differences are quite noticeable to all of our group. I was standing in a parking lot yesterday when a Goldwing DCT came cruising past. The Goldwing had to have downshifted when it came in, but I couldn't hear any shifting or see any difference, which tells me it was very smooth. That's not my bike. I've had riders riding their bikes behind my Rebel 1100 DCT, and they could hear the clunky shifting and didn't like it. I'm going to look at the DCT reset. I'm sure the DCT is a positive game changer for many. Apparently, not for me.

Yup, I love my DN01. “If I’ve got to change gears with paddles, why not just give me a clutch?” Because some bozo cleaned me up on a roundabout and my left hand has sustained permanent pain and nerve damage. I can’t be sure that I can reliably and consistently squeeze a clutch. Thank the heavens for DCT! Without it, I would not still be riding. This entire review is a whinge that the Rebel 1100 DCT isn’t what the reviewer is used to, and she states it often. Nobody likes what they aren’t familiar with. It took me a while to get comfortable with, but I love my old beast now, even the gear change clunk at 84kmph... I’m glad you bought a manual model too. Send the reject my way...I’ll give it the love it deserves 🥰

Thank you for making the video. I actually love the DCT on my Rebel. I remember when the BMW M3 sports cars came out with them. It’s designed for maximum flexibility. In soft riding it’s to be effortless and extremely snappy under extreme riding. Pulling out of the corner you can adjust the shift aggressiveness in the user mode. Also if you don’t use the user mode you can manually downshift 2 gears rapidly since it’s a hydraulically controlled dual clutch and gear down rapidly to pull yourself through with the throttle. In reality the DCT is actually the future in sport riding. I frankly think it’s amazing that Honda has incorporated it in an awesome sport cruiser platform.

Manual transmissions clunk every time you shift them as well you just don't really notice it because you're using your foot to make the noise. The Honda DCT is one of the smoothest shifting transmissions in the world. Manual mode is there so you can shift when you want. you put it in manual mode when you're doing aggressive riding and automatic mode when you aren't. Regarding the snatchy throttle. Not being used to something and trying to use it in a manner that isn't designed for is not really fault of the machine. If someone has a problem because they are trying to use a clutch that isn't there that's kind of that person's problem

  • @DoRC

Thanks for the Great honest review - I test drove DCT at dealer last weekend since they didn't have manual demo bike...I also found gear changes where I wouldn't personally change if I was on a manual (but gear changes must've been smoother than yours with less chunkiness)...definitely, had issue with the peg bracket too - my foot kept landing on it & didn't know why until made a complete stop & I looked down...if there was a gear lever there i might get frustrated with it in the future...btw, you're the first KZreadr I found that mentioned this detail - & I watched a lot of reviews on this bike (manual & DCT versions) cuz I'm considering buying one.

I have been driving motorcycles with a clutch for 55 years but recently had to sell my Harley due to bad arthritis in my left hand and leg - so needed to take a chance on the DCT. Love your comments and agree with all the points you raise especially how it takes time to get used to the throttle by wire and how the automatic reacts at slow speeds - you need to practice low speed maneuvering or you will dump the bike I guarantee. For erratic shifting you may just need to reset the DTC module - but I always drive in manual mode so I can control the RPM and shifting - shifting at higher RPM is very smooth and responsive. and I choose the gear going in and coming out of curves.Overall great fan of the bike. PS I removed the foot peg protectors 4 minutes after picking up the bike.

I've really enjoyed your well made bike reviews and comparisons. Thanks for taking the time to relay your observations to everyone. It's a great help. I bought a Rebel 1100 DCT two months ago. I came from a CVT large maxi-scooter.. The DCT was quite different from the smooth shifting cvt, and it did feel somewhat clunky for about two weeks. Once I got used to it, and how to finesse the throttle in each mode, the bike is a smooth shifting dream of a motorcycle. I would be more patient with it, but if you got the Zero, it will be just as good or better.

I came off of a VFR800DLX because I’m tired of sport bikes, and i love my rebel 1100 DCT. The DCT is fantastic, I don’t feel “clunkiness.” my Ninja 650 and old sportster clunked way harder than this thing, the ninja was snatchier as well. it also shifts very quickly and even if its in too high of a gear it has enough torque to pull hard enough anyway, can also downshift with the paddles and its instant, maybe she has a defective model thats not shifting right? the reason she doesn’t hear much negativity is because there isn’t much, the bike is nearly perfect except the lack of factory accessories that are actually available. I would love to see honda put DCTs on more bikes.

Sorry you are having that “clunking” between gears. I have a 2020 Goldwing DCT and a Rebel 1100 DCT and have not experienced that problem. You can’t even feel the shifting when it shifts. I think there might be something wrong with that bike. I’ve been riding for over 50 years, always with the a clutch, and did find the DCT a turn off when I initially heard about it. After riding a Gold Wing DCT I bought it and haven’t looked back. That’s why I bought this DCT Rebel 1100. You are right about the throttle being a little twitchy, especially in slow cornering, but I can deal with it using a little rear braking while slow speed turning. Also, I totally agree with your assessment about the foot pegs. The positioning sucks. Overall I like the way the bike looks and love the way it runs, especially in “Sport” mode. You better have a good hand on the bars when you twist that throttle.

I've got enough miles on the DCT Honda to be used to it, although switching back and forth can actually be kinda dangerous if you're just daydreaming - like forgetting you have to shift the manual C-14 down and pull in the clutch when coming to a stop, or, worse, forgetting to shift into 1st at a stop and trying to take off in 3rd or 4th gear and stalling in the intersection. I bought the DCT after screwing up my left foot because it really hurt to shift. 3 years later and I can shift now OK but I'm really considering getting the Rebel 1100 DCT and selling the C-14, so I won't have to switch back and forth (getting old and forgetful). Anyway - change is always hard.

First of all a great video. I own the red DCT just like yours. A couple of things I agree with is the foot peg issue. Ok and the the sixth gear issue on curves. I have trained myself to manually down shift coming out of a twisty if I need the extra power. I made a user mode setting that works very well with my riding habits. You should try that. The only clunk I ever hear is the first to second gear. Not a issue with me. It looks like you are not in a city traffic area. The DCT is amazing in city traffic or if your at a light and want to stretch without hunting for neutral. I feel like this bike is perfect for me. That's why I Love my 2021 Honda Rebel 1100 DCT.

I’ve had a red DCT model since mid Feb, have run it for about 1500 miles and love it as well. The short gearing is an issue in Rain or Standard mode. I set up my User mode at Power 3, TC 1, EB 1, and D at 3 (difference from Sport is less engine braking…find it less ‘snatchy’ rolling of throttle) and find gear changes happen at much higher speeds. My shifts are also buttery smooth, none of the ‘clunking’ described in the video. It’s definitely a different experience vs. a manual transmission and if you’ve never used a DCT after long years of riding, it’s going to take some adjustment. That being said, mine is used mostly to commute around town and riding through traffic with a DCT is such a joy comparatively.

I test drove a dct Africa Twin, and i own a manual one. The dct is fantastic imho. The instructor told us you need to ride it for some time to learn how to use it properly, and you HAVE to use the manual shift buttons, it's there for a reason. I absolutely used it to up and downshift, just as if I was riding with a manual. Just use the appropriate engine map: on the Africa it was Sport2.

I'm glad you are happy with your DCTs. Either mine is needing a DCT reset, or it needs more break in time to smooth out more, or the DCT may not be for me. It really is a different way to ride vs. the Manual transmission. Was your Rebel 1100 DCT smooth shifting from the start? Or did it need a break in period? I've saw a Goldwing DCT where I couldn't tell it was shifting at all, it just did it. I thought I was going to get that with the Rebel 1100 DCT, so I'm curious how smooth shifting yours was brand new off the lot. Thanks.

The DCT takes some getting used to. I have an Africa Twin Adventure Sports with DCT and I love most everything about it. There are some good videos about riding with the DCT and how the back brake creates that friction zone you loose without the clutch. I ride a lot in drive mode which gives you the greatest gas mileage but yes in that mode you will be in too high a gear into a turn and have to use the paddle shifters to correct. However recently on one of my favorite twisty roads I tried the sport modes and what a difference. Sport mode 2 had the bike up shifting and down shifting just as I would do it with a clutch. My issues with the Africa Twin are the high seat height and the bike being very top heavy. Other than that it is great. After riding with the DCT for a while I think I would love the Rebel with DCT and the low seat height!

I'd take it back to the dealer and ask them to test ride it and look for Honda TSB's (technical service bulletins) on DCT equipped bikes for similar problems. One would probably be complaining about the opposite thing if they rode their entire life on DCT bikes and suddenly changed to a manual bike: "How come I need to think about which gear to shift to when coming out of a turn? Come on, Honda, make your bike smarter!"

I just picked up mine yesterday and have to admit I don't really like it down-shifting. However upshifting seems seamless. On the other side of the story - every motorbike produces a clunk while shifting, so - where is the problem ...?

I had the DCT on the Africa Twin, not clunky at all. Should get yours looked at. Also, are you using the riding modes? Coming out of turns in sports mode on the AT is great

As a 1100 DCT owner I would disagree with many of your comments but I certainly understand that different people have differents experiences. Is it possible that, as an experienced rider, you simply are not used to ride a bike with no clucth? I would also argue that some of the problems you pointed out would be much less noticible as you put more miles on the bike. But one thing I absolutly want to know: What is the windshield we see on the bike?? Where did you buy it?? Thanks and ride safe.

I agree. These things would be far less noticeable with a person putting more miles on the bike. I do mention that at one point. One thing I didn’t mention... I also purchased a new Zero SR/S Premier (top of the line) recently. It is smooth, powerful and Magnificent, and the 1100 DCT feels like a real clunker in comparison. I’ll be doing a video comparison before selling the DCT. Neither bike requires a manual clutch.

@@gaboufleur Slipstreamer SS-24-C on Amazon. It is a generic windscreen that works great on the Rebel 500's and 1100's, although it fits a bit differently on each bike type. It takes anywhere from 10 - 30 minutes to install, depending on if you secure just to the bars or also to the forks. It is super easy to install. I installed just to the bars on the 500's and the 1100 DCT, but also secured to the forks on the 1100 manual. I love windshields and put something on all my bikes (except the little Grom!)

Besides the foot peg, would I experience any of the other 4 problems if I leave it in automatic? Because that’s why I ordered it. I don’t want to shift gears anymore.

  • @mcSal

    @mcSal

    2 жыл бұрын

Yes, you will experience them all initially (which is why I made the video). As you adapt to the bike, most will no longer be considered an issue. That foot peg guard is poorly designed, though. The DCT is very easy to ride since there is no shifting. If you like to power out of corners/turns, you will want to regularly use the downshift paddle. Life is much better in Sport mode. This bike has a lot of power and torque, which you will enjoy. It is very stable and strong on the freeway at higher speeds, too. Enjoy!

Ok I also acquired the 2022 1100 DCT HINDA Rebel recently and there is one part I hate and again it's because it's a DCT when you engage it just like on a car when you put it on drive mode. Sometime on a stop sign it tends to want to go forward there's a slight resistance and the only way to get around it is you have to take the brake lever to press the neutral button. Also when doing a reverse you have to go to neutral if I had a manual all I have to do is engage the clutch and it's the gears are freed up. Lastly It stalls on stoplight I did a DCT reset and so far it's been behaving still not convinced the issue is fixed I stalled at least 4 times on a stop light and got caught when the light turned green No Bueno. Ok that's my 2 cent

Thank you. Yes, there is a Drive button and a Neutral button on the right handlebar of the DCT. We have the next video ready, a comparison of the DCT & Manual version, but it was broken into 3 videos: Physical Comparison & Specs (done but not released yet), Comparison: The Ride (almost done) with in-ride comments, and Comparison: After Ride Review. Soon. The physical comparison of differences and what’s the same will be covered in the first comparison video that will be released in the next few days.

You are correct. I really made that video to bring these things to people's attention so they know ahead of time what to expect. I can see this bike being great for city riding with lots of stop & go, or for people that are happy to not use a clutch, or for people that have issues with manual bikes. It has plenty of power & torque. It also has the same rider triangle as the Rebel 500 in that it fits riders about 5' tall to maybe 5'10". The Rebel 1100 foot pegs sit high above the ground, which contributes to a more compact rider triangle. Taller riders tend to feel a bit cramped. Just a few things I noticed. What other bikes are you considering?

Great review of weak spots.. High Gears & low speeds - Ninja 1000R actually listed 6th gear above 32mph! Also, powerful torquey motors can push high gears at low speeds - think classic HD riding style. Agree with you point sport mode + paddle shifting then just choose manual shift model. Best "automatic" is CVT like on scooters which has zero problems - except feeling "vague". Loved & miss my scooters CVT. Snatchiness off idle - my NC700X is a little strange until the motor is warmed up fully and many sport bikes with EFI solve this with artificial high idle - I believe this has more to do with fuel injection and the computer and the DCT makes it worse without a clutch. I hate clunks too esp when I shift in to 1st gear - many bmw K bikes have zero clunk in 1st gear (but a whole lot of other issues) Love the tall windshield.
