REBEL1100: Highway manners & rough suspension?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today is Monday, March 15, 2021, and I'm riding the Rebel 1100 for my work commute again today. I'm discussing some of the Rebel's handling personality and possible shortcomings. Skip to the end of the description for clickable time indexes. #rebel1100 #hondarebel1100 #cmx1100
Time indexes:
0:00 Starting my work commute very late today
1:26 Viewer requests to hear more of the bike and less of me! 🤣
2:55 Weekend ride recaps for the Rebel and the Ryker
5:22 My Rebel accessories have been ordered, but everything is still on backorder
8:10 The Rebel handles very well in buffeting and crosswinds
10:24 The Airhawk Cruiser R Large seat pad is super comfortable
13:24 More D-bag Houston cagers tailgating at less than 3 feet at 75 MPH
14:45 The Rebel's rear suspension is a bit rough. ‪@LifeOfBurch‬ mentioned that in his initial ride, and I agree!
17:45 Riding on N Shepherd Drive... dodging bumps and cagers
23:15 Who let the dogs out?
26:00 Parking the Rebel on soft ground or gravel is dicey... it's heavy and the stand can dig in

    Glad I’m not the only one who finds the suspension to be rough, but it’s shame that it’s like that. I need to play around with the preload settings and see if I can’t get it a bit more comfortable. I saw Burly Brand had a Rebel 1100 with their stiletto shocks on the rear, but not sure when they plan to release them. I’d definitely be interested in testing them out though!

    I will be tuning and testing the rear suspension this weekend to see how it sits. The first phase will be the zip tie test to see how much stroke I'm using under normal riding conditions. If I'm not reaching full compression under heavy bumps, then I'll reduce the spring preload a little bit until it softens the ride. If I'm getting full compression and bottoming-out, then I'll increase the spring preload just a bit. The Rebel only has 3.7" of rear suspension travel, so it will be a delicate balancing act to find a "comfortable" setting that still damps the compression stroke enough to prevent bottoming-out. I may eventually upgrade the rear shocks with a set of Öhlins S36 Blackline dampers, but those are $$$ ! We'll see how it goes! 😉👍 --QM

    @LifeofBurch Just an FYI... I did the zip-tie test on my Rebel this evening to check the rear suspension travel. I found that the rear shocks are compressing 70-80% over minor bumps on slower city streets (my weight is ~170 pounds loaded with gear). I'll be posting a video soon with the process and my first set of results. So, that means the huge jolts we're feeling on the highway are probably due to bottoming-out the suspension and bouncing into the bump stops at the bottoms of the shock rods (white bumpers). I will crank up my rear spring preload tomorrow morning and reset the zip ties to see how it does over some highway jolts. 👍 --QM

    Howdy, Sam! Which Honda 350 scrambler? I've seen the H'Ness 350 (stupid name, but cool looking bike) and the CB350RS in the Indian market. I still have the CT125, but I've been busy and haven't had much time to ride it yet. I did take the CT125 on its maiden road trip and motocamping adventure just a couple of weeks ago. Adrian, Neil, Josh (my son), and I rode up to the Bastrop, TX area to camp out at the Cottonbowl Speedway to watch the World of Outlaws sprint car races. I'll be eding and posting that video series soon. Corbin seats are usually good... I've had a few over the years. My last Corbin seat was purchased for my CB500X, but it was a brick... too wide and hard, so it's just been sitting in a plastic bag in the garage for the past 5+ years. I reverted to the factory seat and it's plenty comfortable for me. Corbin might have a good alternative for the Rebel 1100, so I"ll check them out. Hopefully it will be cheaper because it's smaller... my CB500X seat was nearly $500... ouch! I'll be taking another trip out to the Twisted Sisters on my Ryker at the end of April. Then immediately going back out on my XT250 (or maybe the CB500X) to go camping in Odessa, MO for another World of Outlaws race. I'll be posting little updates along the way, but probably won't have time to edit and post those ride series until a while afterwards. Cheers! 👍 --QM

    I'm sure the Canadian model comes with a passenger seat and pegs to justify the same model costing over $900 US more in Canada. On the Honda US website the passenger seat and pegs cost $140 US so the actual difference is around $760 US. The dealer told me that the exhaust emission standards are different here but I can't see that making a substantial difference. I believe it's because our market is 10% of the US market for Honda.

    Someone had their rebel out up to 100 mph and said it did it in 4th gear but it's governed to stop at 100 mph. And they had a bad wobble starting at that speed. I saw it get the wobble. You should wait till a good aftermarket pipe comes out with no upsweep. Low straight exhaust and then get panier racks for luggage

  • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yep, I've been there, done that already several times, too. @LifeOfBurch was the first one that I saw report on the speed nanny, so I already knew what to expect. I've had my DCT up to 102 several times, but the nanny backs it down to 99-100 after a couple of seconds. The bike pulls super hard right up to the ton, and then you feel it taper off quickly when the nanny steps in. I'm sure that the Rebel 1100 is capable of 130+ (gearing and redline dependent) if the nanny doesn't interfere. However, the front end of the bike does get very light under full-throttle acceleration above 80 MPH. It's not uncommon for cruisers to experience that because of the larger-diamerer front wheel ans so much of the weight bias is rearward. The front wheel gets light and floats a bit, but it's not a tank-slapper. I plan to install a steering stabilizer on my Rebel to counteract that. All of my other high-horsepower bikes have factory or aftermarket stabilizers, so this behavior doesn't surprise me. I've already ordered a Coffman's Shorty exhaust for my Rebel to try out the fit and the sound. I started a video and sound test yesterday to compare the sound, and I was planning to pull the Coffman's off of my CB500F to test. Unfortunately, it's REALLY stuck on the 500F's pipe and probably won't come off without damage. So I just ordered another one to try it out... relatively inexpensive at $229. I'll be sure to video those projects to keep everyone informed! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    Howdy, Tony! I have ridden several other Honda DCT bikes before and after purchasing this Rebel 1100 DCT. I rode Honda's first DCT transmission on the 2012 Honda VFR1200 about a decade ago, and it was just so-so... definitely not great. It was a bit schizophrenic with its shift timing and wasn't in tune with my riding habits. I test rode the NC700X DCT several years later, and that was a big improvement in terms of the shift timings and overall usability. The DCT actually fit the NC700 better than the standard transmission because of that engine's very low redline. The last DCT that I rode before the Rebel 1100 was the 2020 Honda GoldWing Tour DCT... that thing was smooth as butter! So, I opted for the DCT on the Rebel 1100 because of it's "cruiser" nature. Since I purchased it, I have also ridden the Rebel 1100 manual transmission for comparison. Overall, I think the DCT suits the engine and riding style very well, and I rarely ever wish for a manual clutch on it. The only cases where I would prefer a clutch are during slow parking lot manuvers or while trundling along in traffic at very slow/variable speeds... it would be nice to modulate the clutch take-up manually in those instances. To compensate for the lack of a manual clutch friction zone, I've adapted to modulating the rear brake under light throttle to maintain consistent momentum. Switching the DCT over to "manual" mode can help in certain situations where you don't want the computer to change gears (e.g,. maintaining steady throttle and RPM, decelerating downhill using engine braking, etc). Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    How are the vibrations on the highway? I have a rebel 500 and it vibrates quite a bit

  • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don't notice excessive vibrations from the Rebel 1100's bars. However, I'm fairly tolerant to that issue because I ride so many different bikes that are capable of vibrating your hands to sleep in under 5 minutes (e.g. Ducati Monster EVO 1100). The Rebel 1100's 270° crank does have an intentional lope to it, so the bike doesn't feel butter smooth like other Honda's that I've owned. Honda also tuned this engine to have different volumetric efficiencies for each cylinder, which also contributes to the lumpy feel (more like a v-twin). The vibrations definitely smooth out at higher RPM's, so it's not that noticeable for highway cruising. I also own the CB500X and CB500F (same motor as your Rebel 500), and I'd say that the vibrations are comparable, but at different resonances and intensities. For example: most of the CB500's tend to have an unpleasant resonance around 62 MPH in top gear. The Rebel 1100 seems to have the same phenomena sometimes around 70 MPH, but the vibrations aren't as "buzzy". I just adjust my speed to work around the resonance points. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Houston usually doesn't get cold enough to need heated grips, but I tend to ride all year round and not just in this area. I definitely use the parking brake whenever I'm not parked on level ground. The brake can be disengaged easily, so the fork lock is a more difficult deterrent to overcome for the casual miscreant. 👍 --QM

    Howdy, Dave! I used a plastic "spudger" tool that is used for vinyl wrap and for removing plastic trim panels. You should be able to use the edge of a credit card at a shallow angle to scrunch up the corner of the stickers, and then peel it off SLOWLY with your fingers. If any adhesive residue is left behind, then hit it with some WD-40, Goo Gone, or similar emulsifier. My stickers came off easily. 👍 --QM

    The front start shaking over 120km/h?

  • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    3 жыл бұрын

    No, the Rebel 1100 feels very stable up to about 155 km/h (95 MPH) cruising at a steady speed. However, the front wheel does get a little bit light and feels "floaty" under full throttle acceleration above 120 km/h (75 MPH). That's not uncommon for high-powered cruisers and sport bikes to float the front wheel under hard acceleration because there isn't enough weight to keep it planted. I will probably add a steering stabilizer to counteract that. I have steering stabilizers on all of my sport bikes for exactly that reason. Cheers! 👍 --QM

    is it true there is a speed limiter (100mph only)?

  • @QuasiMotard

    @QuasiMotard

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, there is a 100 MPH limit. It could easily go faster than that (probably in the 130-135 MPH range, depending on gearing). The computer reduces the engine power very sharply around 102-103 MPH and then it settles back to 99-100. I'm sure that a flash tune will be able to eliminate that limiter. Realistically, I don't need to ride over 100 MPH, and all of the engine power is there right up to that limit. So, it's not really that much of an issue for me. Cheers! 👍 --QM

The passenger backrest is the same situation: the backrest and pad (only available in black) are separate items... who wants to lean back on a hard, bare-metal bar?! 🤣 I'm waiting for a few aftermarket windscreen options to become available before I commit to anything. That's the case with any city street anywhere these days, right?! 🤣 The early problems that I experienced with my Rebel 1100's rear suspension were resolved by increasing the spring preload ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/X2enuNaCZpzPqqg.html ). The factory setting was way too soft for my 170-lb riding weight, so it was bottoming-out over everything and slamming into the bump stops. The factory shocks don't have sufficient compression damping, so we have to fight that with spring preload. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
