"Reasons for accepting atheism" | Stefan - Brooklyn, NY | Atheist Experience

(Part 1/2.) Stefan from Brooklyn, NY asks the hosts for their "basic reasons for the acceptance of atheism." (In other words, he wants to hear "proof and evidence that atheism is even accurate and correct.") He also wants to know if their atheism is based on their acceptance of evolution.
Excerpt from The Atheist Experience #668 of August 1, 2010, with Matt Dillahunty and AronRa. (Topic: viewer calls).

*Added in here, that's not to say there aren't extremists who have issues of their own and are 'man haters' within feminism, because there are, but the idea of equality for both men and women, and studying the fact that in daily life we tend to give more credence, more respect, more everything, to men, isn't harmful, and can actually help make a better world for all of us. Both men and women are often perpetuating the problem of sexism, which is why it takes us all to resolve it.

***** Agnostic and atheist are two different ball games. The former is a claim of knowledge, the other a claim of belief. Agnostics say they don't know or can't know something, gnostics say the opposite. Theists say they believe god/gods exist, atheists lack the belief. You can be an agnostic atheist, saying that you don't know whether there are any gods, and not holding any god beliefs. You can be a gnostic atheist, or anti-theist, claiming that you know no gods exist and holding no god beliefs. If you imagine a Venn diagram with a paper and one circle on it, the people inside the circle are theists and those outside are atheists. Nobody is sitting on the fence, nobody is on the circle. Everyone is either inside the circle, holding a god belief, or outside, holding no god beliefs.

***** _+nikolaneberemed, The atheist does not believe in the existence of god and, for him not to believe, first he needs to know what god is._ That is the stupidest sentence I think I have ever read. Creationists don't believe in evolution or cosmology, but rarely have any clue what they really are, which is evident whenever they conflate the two, and all the rest of the sciences under "Evolutionism" as if it was an umbrella term applying to everything that they are too lazy to actually learn anything about. You don't have to know anything about a claim to lack belief in it, and not much more to reject it. _We are all born agnostic, which means that we do not have the knowledge whether to believe or not believe in the existence of God._ If you don't even have the concept, you can not have belief in it. No belief = lack of belief, which is all that is required for atheism.

Not me, I was a devoted Child of God for over seven years after I had finished 2 years of intense study of the Bible(at least, as intense as possible without learning the original languages and limping along with only the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible with Hebrew and Greek dictionaries.). Even learning the truth about the Bible didn't shake my faith in God; I continued to believe in God for another 13 years, though my mental conception of Her changed over the years. I had had a personal experience with the Divine and nobody could convince me otherwise, until I learned what evidence is, and Occam's Razor. Before I could rationalize it away, my faith was gone, _poof_, like a puff of smoke. That was the spring of 2013. The only way I can ever believe again is with *evidence*.

Questions in order: 1- I have no particular wish to challenge a person's belief in God (the reason I said "if") However if I was told that "My God exists" I would ask how they knew that. 2- I would want to see evidence as it would be an expansion of my own knowledge, this is why I would ask "why" in any situation. 3- I am not sure I understand this question, can you expand on this? Did you mean what are my reasons for wanting evidence? 4- again this would be an expansion of my knowledge.

I will try and help you perceive your lack of understanding, burden of proof, or reasons for non belief (if you must). Two statements. 1)Bob says "There are fairies riding pink unicorns in my garden." 2)John says "I don't believe there are pink fairies riding unicorns in your garden." Who must provide evidence (reasons if you must), Bob , or John ? In advance if you can't reason this out we won't be discussing this any further.

@Fortune2point0 its not the definitions Im concerned about. Its the structure of your claim. Whats the difference between "I dont believe x exists" and "I believe x doesnt exist"? Thats the semantics issue I have. These both claims deal with belief. Or to be more precise, the absence of the belief. They essentially mean the same, so how do you distinguish between the two and even give them neutral and negative properties?

  • @eleminatus
    @eleminatus12 жыл бұрын

@MrCoolUS emm, I agree. There might have been a miscommunication. I was merely defining the position of a reply. Just like your analogy suggests, "I dont know" is the neutral reply (no matter the likelihood of such reply). "I believe" would be a positive reply and "I dont believe" would be a negative one. That was my only argument. I agree with the rest you say!

@maxergud You are correct iff you define Atheism as: belief a god does not exist when a deductive argument this god is available, and no opinion on any god there is no deductive argument against.

Got the ACA mug, and brought it with me to class at university. I'm scandinavian, mind you. This guy who had actually been living in texas for a while came up to me and said "Its a joke, right? That mug? Surely here cant be such thing as an atheist society in Austin Texas, heartland of christian fundamentalism? Who'd make a jug like that, is it some type of satiric tourist bling, like a funny T-shirt?". "Never mind the Holy Lance, Pick of Destiny", I thought "I gots me the ACA Mug of Irony"

@ScientificBob My mistake, It would appear that scientific terminology has been watered down. Micro-evlution is a fact because it can be observed under laboaratory prodecures. Macro evolution cannot be observed much less the effect of such an occurence. So technically macro evolution would actually be a hypothesis.

You may not know if there IS a god, but you do know if you are AWARE of a god, which was the 1 question you sort of tried to answer.

My previous comments against this assertion were on one of the other "atheist experience" videos. Unfortunately, they were disliked by the voters-deleted. I'll reiterate the reasons why the entity must be timeless, space-less, immaterial, and personal, as I discuss the causal principle, later today. There is a clear progression to the idea of a personal creator on Kalam. Other theistic arguments are necessary to reach the conclusion that the Christian God...

@Fortune2point0 So here is how I see it - positive position, is the one, where you accept the existence of god; negative is the one, where you dont accept the existence of god (whether its theistic or gnostic approach). Neutral position, is the one that does not take any side - belief or disbelief. So the question is, what kind of position is truly neutral? In my opinion its "I dont know". It does not take sides and it deals with both, belief and knowledge.

Sure. What constitutes evidence for one may be considered trivial to another. I think a cumulative case can be made for theism utilizing philosophical arguments. These arguments include the Kalam and the Leibnizian cosmological arguments, along with the teleological, ontological, and moral arguments. There really isn't space to list all the evidence(s) here--or arguments for that matter. Suffice it to say, there are at least a dozen good arguments for theism. Thanks for the dialogue, Ernest

    1. Many not all, religious people simply believe something because it's written in a book, they feel good from believing, tradition, hundreds of people can't be wrong about miracles, revelation, etc 2. We look at evidence. Reasons for not believing isn't the same as burden of proof. Read an article on logic. Any claim that is brought out as being true or new, has to come with evidence. I can read what "god" has claimed to be "his" law in "his" bible. I didn't enough space to state my reasons.

@sharkjack We observe the "process" of pluto's orbit around the sun, we don't observe the entire revolution. We apply observations of other revolutions to that of pluto's orbit. The trajectory of it's path can be concluded by examining the distance of pluto from the sun, and the speed at which pluto travels in conjunction with the gravitational pull from the sun. The process of micro evolution has also been observed. The process of macro evolution on the other hand, has never been observed.

@MrJoaquin1978 The point is that order with complexity does occur without intelligent intervention. The inability of a single process to alone produce life doesn't say anything about how life actually developed. But it's certainly time to stop invoking order as evidence for intelligent design.

@Fortune2point0 Have you heard the piece of logic that goes: Speculation void of evidence equals an infinitly small amount on a scale of probability. ? I was trying to mention how you missed the conclusion (I am a snark-machine at times). Regarding the question you raise: I cannot prove he is deluded, but in the case you put forward I do not have the burden of proof as I have not made the positive claim "Zeus is real." if I said that "Zeus does not exist" rather than "I do not accept any god without evidence" then I would have a heavy burden of proof (especially as this deals in the supernatural).

I am talking about the evolutionists position that A) We are one of the "Great Apes" and B) that we vocally communicate in a complex manner and that C) we achieved both of those through a process of random mutations known as evolution and natural selection. Therefore, if you are an evolutionist you believe in talking apes. It is not somehting i came up with; it is a truth. Now there may be more depth to..

@camy011 The point i was trying to make is that you misunderstand atheism if you think it requires faith. Atheism is the opposite of a faith based belief. I believe that the universe somehow came about without a supreme being. And no, i don't know how, and frankly, i don't care.

  • @Fortune2point0

@eleminatus They are asserting their lack of belief, they are not asserting that a god does or does not exist. Claiming "I believe a god exists" or "I believe a god does not exist" is different than the null, default position of "I do not believe a god exists".

I'm not twisting it. When I say/mean universe, I mean all possible universe(s)/plane(s). I equate it to a state. Yes our state has boundaries(the "known universe") but it also may exists with other universes, other states, together in existence, a country. Think more about someone's response.
