"Jesus has thrown you a life preserver!" | Denise - Portland, OR | Atheist Experience 672

Denise from Portland, Oregon runs a Facebook page about The Holy Bible. An atheist challenged her to call The Atheist Experience, so she did. What follows is a heated discussion that ends when Matt drops the F-bomb...
This is an edited clip from The Atheist Experience 672 for August 29, 2010 (topic: "viewer calls"), with Matt Dillahunty and Jeff Dee. Note that the phone number at the top of the screen is the new number for viewer calls, which was introduced on 10/10/2010.
This episode of The Atheist Experience is archived on Blip.tv and Ustream.tv:

"GOD, THE MAFIA BOSS"
The "mafia boss analogy" that Matt mentions in this clip is explained in the "God, the Mafia Boss" videos, which can be found here:

    It's things like this that really make me think that the majority of religious people are mentally ill. And I only say majority because of the frequency at which I see the following two traits overlap in my daily life. On one side it's all "you will suffer unfathomable pain a torment because you fell in love with the wrong person" and all of the violent and horrid ideas that comes with that, then on the other side it's "noooo not a naughty word". It's such a level of complete mental disarray that I just cannot fathom, and I believe that it shows that there's something not right in the head. Something has screwed up if you get offended by only the sound of 'fuck' but don't also get offended at the idea of an authority burning and torturing people for love.

    They advocate things that are racist, anti-semtiic, and subscribe to a book that condones slavery, rape, misogyny, child abuse, murder, genocide AND xianity has a HISTORY of doing such things.. but the word "fuck" offends them????? REALLY? Where Jesus goes blood flows and not his own.. and the Roads of Auschwitz and Dachau are paved with stones from Golgatha and Damascus road (meaning the NT taught the world to hate and demonize people).

It's because they are sheltered and conditioned to believe it's their place to sit at home and be sponges on society instead of getting off their fat asses and doing something to make themselves actually useful, and having to earn respect from others in the real world instead of having it, or a facsimile of it, spoon-fed to them just because they're baby-makers.

Let me put into simple words for you. You made the claim that there are 2 choices when you die.1. sex with dead people & 2 sex with dead people on fire. Only you also claim that this happens with an eternal life. I said you are talking absolute bullshit because a) you are making assertions which you cannot prove, b) you are making assertions that you know you cannot prove, c) no one has any proof of any life after death & d) other than yourself & a few other wierdos, no one wants to fuck corpses for eternity. I'd have said that you're the "kinda crazy" one. After all, which one of us believes there's an invisible man in the sky who watches everything you do & doesn't intervene in your life until you die where the end result is having sex with dead people. You sir are a fucking certifiable loony. Enjoy your eternity of necrophilia wont you?

    I think the best analogy for the "you send yourselves to hell" claim is something like: A human father tells his children they must worship him and believe he has superpowers or else they are grounded. The children CAN'T believe their father has superpowers because there's no evidence of it, they fess up to their father and he grounds them for not believing he has superpowers. The children ask why he is grounding them and he retorts "I didn't ground you, you grounded yourselves." The children say, no we didn't, we just can't believe you have superpowers, but we don't want to be grounded. "Nope, grounded yourselves." See also an abusive spouse who says, "I don't want to hit you, you make me do it."

    Heaven can't be real. This is how I know. According to the Bible Heaven is a beautiful place, a paradise where your every wish is fulfilled, your every happiness never ending and a reality. Well, I am happiest with my family, in particular my two younger siblings. My brother is an absolute atheist. My sister is agnostic. If what Christians say is true, despite the fact that both of my siblings are wonderful people who take time out of their lives to help others and have never caused anyone harm, they're going to hell when they die. So now, let's assume I genuinely converted to Christianity. I follow the Bible, I accept Jesus as my lord and savior, I give my life to god, I accept Christianity as the only true religion, etc. I die and go to heaven, but my siblings aren't there. For all eternity they're rotting in hell, being mercilessly tortured and tormented for nothing more than rejecting the concept of god, who supposedly loves all his children. How can heaven be enjoyable to me at all when the people I love the most, those who bring me the most happiness, aren't there to share it with me?

  • @siphons92

    @siphons92

    10 жыл бұрын

    Certainly a view of heaven I haven't heard :) From what I've read and was preached to growing up, it was essentially slavery. Every moment is spent praising god and singing about his glory for all eternity, and those who have been good and faithful throughout their lives would be rewarded in heaven (though I don't really understand how anything really gets better than simply spending eternity in "paradise" instead torture in hell). Another point I make is I remember being preached that as the faithful christians rise again when Jesus comes back to take them all up to heaven, they will get new bodies and there won't be any sadness or pain in heaven. Well, as I understand it, if there's not going to be any sadness or pain in heaven, then ultimately you won't give damn about your brother or sister in hell. If there's no sadness in heaven, you won't be sad that your brother or sister are in hell. The whole point you make with "How can heaven be enjoyable to me at all when the people I love the most, those who bring me the most happiness, aren't there to share it with me?" is why a lot of christians are (obnoxiously) evangelical. They'll just be so sad if you're not there spending eternity with them eating skittles and farting rainbows in heaven. But if there's no sadness in heaven... how will they be sad you're not there? **Not quite sure about the rewards in heaven business,. If I'm wrong apologies.

    My great grandmother had her faith, but she was neither a churchgoer nor preachy. There are Christians who would say she doesn't deserve to go to heaven because she wasn't in church every week. But she certainly loved her neighbour. It seems to me if the Christian God commands worship in return for eternal life (or eternal punishment as a result), then He/She/It would be more clear with instructions (in that the theme of the Old Testament was worship and obedience, compared to the New Testament and "love thy neighbour"). That's why my faith devolved. If I can go a step further; let's say I'm wrong about afterlife (or ignorant, if you will), and there is, in fact, a heaven. If Nanny wasn't rewarded after the life she lived, then fuck such a place. I want no part of it.

  • @siphons92

    @siphons92

    Again, just from what I read and was preached to, all your great grandmother had to have was unquestioned faith that Jesus was the savior of mankind and had to accept it in her heart to get past the pearly gates. Not going to church is what most christians use to gauge just how "good a christian" people are (at least that's how I was and the other christians I associated with). Sounds like she was a good person regardless :) ***** What does christian heaven offer a devoted Hindu? Nothing. They'd be going to hell with all the other good and generous people in the world that denied god's/Jesus' divinity. Fucked up isn't it? Lol

Like if we're gonna keep putting this into people terms, then if someone was trying to mug someone on a boat, in defense of that person's life, it'd be valid to have the mugger thrown overboard in the heat of the moment, and then the life preserver thrown overboard so the mugger don't drown and can be properly punished. Of course, in this analogy, no one is offering the mugger an ultimatum in exchange for getting to use the life preserver.

    This is so sad to see someone who is wrapped up in their faith so blindly that when they are confronted with the very scripture they believe is perfect, they deny their own scripture and can't realize they're doing it. Some atheist may think that the Christian knows they are telling the truth and he wants to insist on believing it but I will tell you as a former Christian who was this stubborn once before that the reason for this Behavior is because a person of faith truly wants to believe it is all true so they will naturally become mentally defensive and try to find different meaning to the verse or versus so it can once again make sense to them and seem like is still true. I was once a Christian like this and no amount of Confrontation moved me just like this man couldn't be moved but when I decided 2 rewrite how I believed as a Christian I ventured back into the Bible and started reading with an open mind hoping God would personally give me understanding for how I should live as a Christian and believe and the result was I found fallacy error and contradiction of the entire religion just by rereading the New Testament with an open mind. I had nobody to argue with, my common sense kicked in and I broke free of this lie. I feel bad for those who are still in this state of mind who have been confronted like this man was on this video and continue to believe this obviously wrong religion so blindly. This is what religion does to people it poisons their mind. You can even go as far as saying this mentality is like a disease, and to think religious people say that atheism is a disease LOL. Religion is very similar to a drug addiction. Atheism is not something we have to think about in our daily lives because we don't believe somebody's watching our every move, we just live our lives. There is no disease in that.

This is how I feel about god. If you fear someone because of what they will do to you, that is not love, that is Domestic Violence!! It's almost like "spiritual rape" as far as I am concerned! I am so happy to be away from all that baggage, for the first time in my life I finally feel peace. Love you guys! I have learned so much just from these videos alone it is so uplifting.

    "Jesus has thrown you a life preserver!" Um, Jesus also supposedly made you, the boat you fell out of, the water you're drowning in, and the air you're breathing to stay alive. Why not mention those as well as the life preserver?

    6:53 " without using filthy language?!?" And after she hung up, Denise went to read her Bible to expunge that filthy language from her memory... 2 Kings 18:27 But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you? ... Denise quickly turns to a different book of the Bible.... Isaiah 36:12 But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you? ( must be an important Bible lesson, otherwise why repeat it?)
