REAL Truth, No BS, Hands On Review of the Rotolight Neo 2- High Speed Sync Off Camera LED and Flash

Ойын-сауық

Join Rotolight Master of Light Jason Lanier for a whirlwind trip where he shows you video footage and stills that he has shot for the brand new Rotolight Neo 2 where he does a review answering tough questions and giving real answers about this brand new light. PLEASE THUMBS UP, SHARE, LEAVE A COMMENT AND SUBSCRIBE!!
In this video Jason shares footage from shoots done in London, Ireland, Miami, Nebraska and other places that he's been able to use the prototype Neo 2 lights that Rotolight sent him to test.
Shortly after completing a European press trip where the Neo 2 was announced, a buzz started coming around about these lights and what their capabilities truly are. Videos, blog posts and more were posted with questions about power, battery life, and the various applications that the lights could be used in.
Jason is sponsored by Rotolight as nearly everyone knows and has been for 5 years. He used Rotolight products well before ever being sponsored. Rotolight has provided special discounts to Jason's followers who are interested in purchasing these lights. Existing Neo 1 owners can even save 20% when upgrading to Neo 2. For more information please visit:
www.jasonlanier.com/rotolight
Jason created this video to help answer as many questions as he could including using the lights on camera, off camera, indoors and outdoors. The purpose of the video is to show people what the lights can truly do and nothing more. That way buyers will be happy when they get these lights in their hands.
All the footage was taken with a camcorder on a tripod. No fancy video crew or team or slick marketing were used. This is a real hands on review and demonstration of these lights including using them in the rain.
The lights were used in both LED and flash mode, in normal sync and in high speed sync. We hope the viewers can look at the resulting images and determine if the lights are indeed suited for them. Jason personally believes that LED flash combination lights are the way of the future and the Neo 2 is forging new territory and options for many photographers out there.
We thank you for watching and invite you to stick around and watch a few more videos while you're here.

Hi Jason, as a very new "new comer to just starting sticking my toe into the portrait scene - both studio and outdoors”, you have totally inspired me to look into purchasing the Rotolight Neo 2, here in Australia - as you so truly say (based on your photography) it certainly provides an exceptionally more pleasing light quality to up-close portraits! I am completely impressed by its performance under the range of different environments you have shot in this and other videos! I am also very aware that your professional expertise makes the high quality shots you obtain look really easy to emulate - clearly that demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship! I also have to add that Maddi is one of the most natural, thoughtful, expressive and competent models I have ever had the good fortune to observe working in this field - she is certainly an inspiration and huge benefit which complements your work hand in hand. She clearly enjoys her work and her enthusiasm is totally infectious which demonstrates her absolute passion in her work! As I previously mentioned I am very new to this field so I sincerely hope my questions on what camera settings you used in this photoshoot do not offend or get into your propriety expertise; so if you can pass on answers to any of the following questions, I would be extremely grateful: While I do realise you have posted the camera settings along with the various photos, I assume you are shooting totally in manual mode and not AE or TV (Canon EOS 5D Mk 1) equivalent modes? I was also inspired with your work in using Speedlite Flash units incorporating High Speed Sync mode but am a tad confused on how you set up the camera (in my case Canon EOS 5D Mk1) once you have set the Speedlite into HSS mode to achieve the high shutter speeds? I have noticed you appear to have a preference to shoot at f8 plus ISO 100 or similarly close to these settings - and then let the camera and flash determine the required shutter speed or do you habitually know which shutter speed to set based on the camera parameters you have already set? Can you also advise if the Rotolight Neo 2 is compatible with my Canon EOS 5d Mk1? I thank you in anticipation of hearing from you when convenient. Cheers from Down Under.

I own it. Find it inadequate in most situations. for the money you can get a lot of better gear. For the same money you can get High speed sync, TTL, hand held remote indoor outdoor flash with transmitter and receiver and a softbox. Which is still small and portable but can be used in way more situations including run and gun. I found the neo 2 to be too dim to use in most situations. Works as a rim light quite well but 500 bucks is a lot of money for a rim light. I also found it's output unreliable and its color temp to be inaccurate and trigger unreliable. I think it's a great beta product but does not provide value for money. If the light was 50-90 bucks I would call it fair value. but at current pricing levels it just makes no sense for most situations. I love Jason and all his work but I stand at opposition on this product. I really wanted to love this product but it's now just a shelf ornament that I use as a rim light on indoor shoots only.

Thank you for this review! I prefer natural light but at times I need just a bit more. I have tried $20 LEDs, hand held flashlights, even the light off my cell phone, and none of them are consistent and controllable. It's also essential that my light source not distract my subjects, hence the previous solutions. I will see if I can find the lowest power LED settings available for this light and see if that will suffice. Thank you for your effort on this video, I really appreciate it.

Jason it doesn't matter what you say about this light..I know you feel that you have to explain yourself. I don't believe you do...People need to stop and use some common sense.. We can all see what it's capable of. Tin of beans, is still a tin on beans, doesn't matter how fancy the label is. It's all about photographers learning when and where and how they can benefit from this light and become better photographers... I can't wait for my NEO2 to arrive.. I can't wait to use... Lots of ideas... Like you say "find the gear what works for you" If this doesn't work for you don't buy it.... simple.... look forward to your next video...

Hi Jason, I enjoy your videos and lessons, I am an amateur photographer who travels by motorcycle. That being said, I switched to the Sony A6300 and bought the RL-48 Color kit plus looking to pick up a Neo 2. This will be my 3 light setup from now on as I can pack everything I need on my motorcycle while I travel. Prior to this I had the Canon 5D MK3, 70-200 2.8, 16-35 2.8, and the 24-70 2.8. As you can imagine this took up a lot of space on my motorcycle. Now with my current setup, I can pack everything I need! So the question I have is will the HSS transmitter for the Neo 2 work on a A6300?

As I understand it, the power of the flash from this light is the same as the power when it's continuous. If that is correct then why not (other than battery usage) just leave the light on rather than flash it?

Using flash will have superior motion freezing dynamics...a flash fires at speeds of 1/3000th and higher...so even if your camera shutter speed is set to 1/100th...your EFFECTIVE speed is much much faster...almost like an extra image stabilizer:)

    1. There is definitely a place in photography for light sources with a basic utility of helping someone shoot wide open from 6 feet away. 2. There are most definitely light sources worth $400. I am not as sure there are many fitting both of those descriptions at the same time.

Jason, thank you for posting this video. You are obviously aware of the negative comments, videos, blog and forum posts not only about this light but also about your credibility for promoting it. You have no doubt been more honest in this video than the product launch was. However IMHO as a theoretical physicist and not a professional photographer you have fluffed over many of the shortcomings of this light by using distraction and diversion. You do not demonstrate anything that cannot be achieved with a $35 LED panel in terms of direct light and a $60 flash in terms of HSS flash. You use the term 'soft light' but unless my 9 years at University were wasted or you have discovered a new law of physics then just by its very size this light cannot produce what photographers generally understand to be 'soft light'. Most, except maybe one image were shot at F1.4 and I for one would not want to spend nearly $400 on a light that restricted me to F1.4 or maybe F2.8 on a good day. At ISO 100 1/250th at 10ft (as you demonstrate) I would personally want to be able to shoot at F8 and so would many others whose comments I have seen. May I remind you what Rotolight themselves say on the website about the Neo 2 'NEO 2 is a revolutionary LED light, that combines the ‘shoot what you see’ benefits of continuous light, with the flexibility of High-Speed Sync (HSS) flash, for more power or to freeze action. With no recycle time, you’ll never miss a shot.' Nothing in this statement is technically false but the implication of what it can do as opposed to what it actually delivers are two different things. Someone with less technical understanding reading this could easily be mislead into believing they are buying something with performance levels that cannot be delivered. I believe this is the real issue that many of the critics actually have. It is not with the light itself, the way it functions or even the fact it runs off AA batteries, but the way it has been presented and certainly at the live product launch the way any performance aspect that did not fit the narrative was glossed over and questions from those challenging it were ignored.

  • @JasonLanierPhotography

Jason, the flash I refer to is the Godox TT600 with HSS and the panel is a Yongnuo YN300 Air Pro. Like I said in my original comment I am not a professional photographer but do have a reasonable grasp on the physics of light. Your claims for the Rotolight are at best misleading which would be particularly the case with new photographers who are looking to you for unbiased opinion. I stand by my comment that It is impossible for a light source as small as the Neo to deliver what most photographers understand to be 'soft light' and placing it in a modifier will reduce the output so significantly that unless you are shooting wide open with high ISO's then it would be just about unusable. The TT600 is a GN60 speedlight which can easily be used in something like a 30" softbox or with a 36" shoot through and give much 'softer light'. The YN300 Air has less power than the Neo but because of its size and the design, gives a soft even light. Step up to about $65 and its big brother the YN600 Air Pro which is available in 32-5500K or just 5500K and IMHO you have a better solution. I don't need to post a video of anything as I am not trying to sell anything and my claims can be proven without even switching the lights on provided you have a basic understanding of physics and math. As you have made this and other video's trying to back up the claims of Rotolight I am sure you are aware that I am not the only one questioning the claims being made about this light.

I want one, but I think I'm going to wait until sometime later next year to make my purchase. It's not inexpensive, and I need to see some more testimonials from other users before I make a final decision.

Jos Tomee, Jason, I like your videos very much, please continu this madness. I really don't think a Rotolight can match a softbox in terms of softness of light. The greater the surface of the lightsource, the softer the light. Do you agree?
