Exposing for Ambient Lighting while using Artificial Light and Off Camera HSS Flash- Rotolight Neo 2
Ойын-сауық
Join award winning photographer Jason Lanier for a shoot in an ancient cemetery and church in Glendalough, Ireland where he explains his process for exposing for ambient lighting while using off camera flash and artificial lighting. PLEASE THUMBS UP, SHARE, LEAVE A COMMENT AND SUBSCRIBE!
Jason shoots in all different types of lighting scenarios and something that is not understood by some photographers is the practice of exposing for ambient lighting while using artificial light. Photographers like Jason do this so the flash is a compliment to the shot, not the overpowering presence in the image.
In this shoot Jason uses the Rotolight Neo 2 as the sole key light, firing in both High Speed Sync and Normal Sync modes in lighting conditions that are both in daytime and night. Below is a list of the gear used in the video:
**Sony A9- bhpho.to/2AAMTvZ
**Sony 70-200 G Master lens- bhpho.to/2hD1SSg
**Sony 85mm G Master lens- bhpho.to/2A2V83D

Jason, all respect to all the models you have shot in your channel, but Maddi has brought a new level to the game. You guys work so well together. She is both entertaining and beautiful, a complete joy to watch. Her modeling is more like a performance piece. You guys , keep up the great work together.

Wow. Excellent work from Maddi, (as always) great eye focus, and lots of interesting shots. Well done, you two!
I have been following you since your very first video how you discuss starting in photography. I learned tons of practicality and unique ways of how you create your arts... and I realized finding and working with a very talented model like Maddie, it’s a collaboration of fabulous work of two artists. Thank you Jason. You doesn’t know me, just one of your admirer.
Beautiful work as always. Maddi was so professional! She gave so much to this shoot.

Great video Jason! I've learned so much from you. And I love how you actually are showing us real shoots and behind the scenes stuff. I'm a relatively new subscriber and to photography, but I've noticed a big difference between you and these other "KZread Photographers" who only talk about Gear and stuff that doesn't even really matter like they make you think it does.

Read Castor thank you man. There's a difference in being a real photographer rather than a talking head.
Man, you're the best one!! So in love about your job!
Lesson learned; bring a veil when shooting lol. Such a great shoot! I loved how some of the shots look ghostly. Keep up the good work.
Hey Jason, Maddi is an exceptional model, she's got the loveliest vibe, loved the ballet pose image Maddi created, you make a great team. Top video Man.
great post and fab to see good oul Glendalough ....been there many times before I left Ireland and you said the name perfectly , the Wedding dress and Maddie's poses were spot on for this location !
Your videos are both helpful and inspiring. Shoot for the ambient light. I needed to hear that from an expert. Thank you!
Great video, great shots, and Maddie is just off the charts!
Hey Jason, Maddi is an awesome model, so awesome to watch you two work. when she was sitting and swatting the bugs. all i could think was the old black and white silent films. great work. keep it up you two.
Jason!!! One of my absolute favourite. You covered so many thing, especially as the veil can be difficult to shoot. When are you next in the UK my husband and I MUST come to one of your workshops
Thank you much for all your videos sir ! I have Pugalistica Dementia. Though i dont have any type of career in my future, your videos keep inspiring me to keep pushing, staying creative, and above all to just enjoy the hobby and have fun. Thank you much sir !
I put in my order for a Neo 2 and got 10% off with your coupon code. Thanks, Jason!!!
Excellent. Thanks to you and Maddie.
I like how you and the model interact, great shoot.
When the film Braveheart was filmed (some scenes on location in Ireland) they had the same issue with midges. It was noted that one of the assistants was less prone to being attacked by said insects. When asked what repellent she was using she replied none. It turned out she was wearing cosmetic company Avon's 'Skin So Soft' product. Living in the West of Scotland and suffering from the same issue I have tried this myself and found it to be very effective. I read somewhere that the Royal Marines have used it also. Worth considering as I believe it contains only natural ingredients. Loved the video, the chemistry between yourself and Maddie made the shoot. Great work.
More Maddi! The chemistry between you two is amazing!
What an amazing model! She's so easy to work with.
Bugs AND Cold, no thank you:) Thank you for everything JL, I am enjoying all the content, you really work your ass off!
You are the Best of all.....and you are the Eastwood of photographers and photography...a one man awesome show..btw I m a very very beginner, only has a Sony RX10 I bought it several years ago when it just came out. Never into photography till recently. Have enough money to buy any cameras and lenses..but sticking with this crappy camera with fixed lense...coz I want to see what I can create with it..and coz you are my inspiration Jason! Thx for giving us so much and making us feel we are not alone...
WHAT A MATCH THE BOTH OF YOU!!! - I enjoyed this video of yours oh so much ( like all the other vids...) and only can stick to the words of Alex F.: Maddie is just gorgeous and thank you so much for showing again your versatile skills! F.
Awesome photoshoot :-) Maddie's modelling is fantastic. I can't help but hear Kate Bush singing Wuthering Heights when Maddie is dancing around.
Awesomely beautiful model. Great photo shoot.
Those are amazing shots, and Maddi is a phenomenal model!
Another great video Jason!
this guy is a photography beast 💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
AWESOME!!! my neo 2 and transmitter will be here tomorrow.
Beautiful!
Great video Jason. I had these insects attack my bride when I was photographing outside on one occasion. I also had a white polystyrene reflector board and it seemed it was the white they were attracted to. We ended up running for it.
Love it brother!!!
fantastic model :-) thx 4 the vid !
Maddys awesome brilliant shot Jason really cool
I know this video is old and you probably wont see this comment, but your jacket is so badass. I've seen you wearing it in other videos and it looks great on you.
Great Stuff....Maddi is just amazing...
Damn Jason these photos you shot look fantastic. Probably helps having a great model to help you get the perfect shot
Hey Jason, from one photographer to another, the best thing during a shoot to have on you no exceptions is a can of Off spray. 😂 seriously though I never shoot without a can in my bag lol especially during monsoons when I’m out shooting lightning. Pure anger without it haha! Great video by the way!
beautiful shots.
So inspiring!
Awesome job. My wedding gown looked just like that. My wedding shots do not! Lol. Great job.
Cool shots best bug protection avon skin so soft. Maddie is always awesome!
You are lucky it didn't rain that day guys....not that it rains that much in Ireland...Lol!! Awesome shoot and once again I learnt a lot thanks!! Maddi is a star, hang on to her.
Great Video!!
That outro just cracked me up! Maddi is the best! :D
OH my god ! I hope it's only the filter that was broken, not the lens itself ! Nice shoot as usual Jason ;)
I've been there!!! What a wonderful place!
Another Santa Maria Guadalupe~! I just got the Neo 2 for a couple of weeks. Can't wait to use it on a shoot, sadly it is -22 outside now.
Maddi.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great!
Amazin Pictures and Model she is so lovley. And btw great music
Love this model...really
Sick shots bro.
Always the best sir Jason i learned a lot from mercibeaucoup👌👌👌🙏🙏🙏
Midge attack - pure evil!!! was up at Spean Bridge in Scotland when we experienced the worst attack I'd ever known. Nice one for staying on site.
SHES MY FAVE OF YOUR MODELS SO FAR
I like the location and the shots you took .. I've always said, some locations can be brutal but worth it :) ...
Good video, and model!!
Great video. Midges are very annoying, we get them bad here in Scotland. Definitely need some midge repellent spray next time you’re shooting over here!!
Love your videos Jason... but when the beautiful Maddie is modeling your videos are extra special, love that lady... Thumbs up brother...
Bravo 👏🏽 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Hi Jason Firstly i would like to say thank you for the awesome video Here i would like to ask you whether continous lighting or flash strobe is better and what is your recommendation on the lighting situation for an outdoor wedding
Wowwwwww !
F....K Amazing !!!!!
I had a bent filter ones and I found out that if you press the filter against the bottom of your shoe you can turn it off, worked for me.
Really good stuff Jason, though ouch for the bugs and the breakage. One question about your reversed lens hood .. do you have a reason to shoot this way?
Its not so much that Maddy is other worldly . its that she knows she's other worldly. The only 2 Models in Jason Catalogue that transcend the boundaries of light. Em and Maddy. .. Women like this is are as rare as love itself. Just wow.
Great my man it helped
Haha 70-200... #Lenshood a'la Fedora Nation? Amazing shots, great to see two professionals at work. Midgie's, Mozzie's and Fly's = Just put roll-on repellent in my camera bag after watching your footage. Oh and just a little trick: I take along empty sandbags when travelling and fill them up with water bottles to hold stands in place.
A midge hat is invaluable for the notorious midges, especially those in the West coast of Scotland. It will even fit over your fedora. Great video as always.
for tramittier from neo 2 to camera, which trasmitter u use?
Great video Jason! I've learned so much from you. I hava question what batteries best to use on the neo 2 i used alkaline batteries and only last 15min on continues light .
Jason, thanks for posting the video. Are you slightly underexposing the background for the shots, or is the background at the metered exposure? Thanks!
Hey Jason, how do you meter for scenes like this / nighttime shoots with a model? Do you spot meter on a wall and then change the Rotolight power to match this exposure? Could you quickly demonstrate this in camera in a future video? Fantastic videos as usual by the way. Especially liked the Irish music touch.

This! Your video description says "where he explains his process for exposing for ambient lighting while using off camera flash and artificial lighting" But you never explain the process...you just say "Do It" lol! I was laughing at the stuck on filter! I had the same thing happen to me...couldn't get that damn thing off for the life it me cause it bent in a fall just like yours. I finally went back to the car and grabbed it with a pipe wrench:)

Maddie!!!! A MAZE ING!!!
Deet saved my ass once whilst at a trout fishery in north west england, similar conditions, my face was on fire. Not everyone likes deet, but it's a life saver.
And I thought Florida had a bug problem LOL I bet from now on you'll carry a filter wrench. Great shots man :-)
hi Jason, for gaining the maximum power of light, up to which voltage of V-mount battery can be used for Neo2?
You're so good you forget we may not be!!!!
i have an important question please reply. can i use neo2 to cover a large group of people from 4 to 9 people lined up at a wedding? also what is the maximum watts power it gives in flash mode and continuous mode?
Madie is a top notch model
This is about the fourth or fifth video I have seen with Maddi. She is fantastic! So expressive. Does she have a link on instagram or other sites?

Yes she's amazing. You can find her at @lalunetta on Instagram.
Avon cosmetics do a moisturizer calledd "Skin so soft" best bloody midge repellent, used a lot by outdoor instructors cause it works. Great shoot by the way.
Great video, why anyone would thumbs down on this is silly... Jason check out ThermaCell for the bugs
You were in Glendalough!! Come on man I would love to go to a workshop with you and I was 5 minutes away how did I miss this 😓😓😓
Always great stuff Jason. I notice at around 1:30 you are slightly out of focus and Maddi is tack sharp. Agree with comment below...Maddi, brought a whole new level.
That model has the best attitude
So to expose for the background while focusing on the subject, you would need to be... (Correct me if I'm wrong, this is why I'm posting this comment) - Shooting in manual so Auto Focus doesn't change settings - Aim on the background and correct settings ISO, F-Stop, Shutter to properly expose for the background - Then aim and use auto focus and facial recognition on the model, and adjust the flash so that it fills in what's not exposed properly on the model ...Yes? (I'm doing a shoot with flash for the first time and need to make sure I got this down)

Yes Greg from the past, you got it. Thanks to everyone else that was helpful 😂
What an incredibly beautiful setting..think so far since becoming a Fedora Nation groupie this is my very favorite shoot so far..and as a s gardener may I suggest next time bring along a jacket netting ...hood and jacket made of mosquito netting ...tight at the wrists and waist covers the head ...use it here in the balmy south to avoid the gnats while working in the garden...poor model won’t benefit though😕
Hey Jason, watching you for a while now and I love Sony. Just switched to the A7R III (got lucky enough to pick the last one up yesterday). Today i went shoot some landscape stuff to test dynamic range, then bam... raw not supported by adobe... damn I'm so angry at adobe for being so slow updating their supported cameras. Anyways just downloaded capture 1, but I don't want to learn another program for 2 weeks, do you have a trick / convert so they work with adobe? If not, which program do you use? Ty! ps: I love you too, not only sony haha!
@JasonLanierPhotography

The brand new cameras like the R3 will always have the shots first in Capture One and then Adobe comes around about a month later. You can just import them into capture one and export them as PSD files. Then re-import those PSD files into Lightroom. That's the only workaround...:)
@Krowny
6 жыл бұрын
Without losing quality on the raw? "if that makes sense" ^^ Thanks a lot for the answer! , somehow skin color sucks in capture one
@shifteleven
6 жыл бұрын
Skin color sucking in Capture One? That's the first I've ever heard anyone say that! For the RAW quality thing - export to PSD in a 16bit color space and not an 8bit. Then you should be pretty good - but keep the RAW files around too. So you can't transfer your edits, but you can transfer metadata - ratings, keywords, labels, owner and whatnot. You just need to save the metadata as a sidecare file (.xmp). When you import, LR will be able to read that. PS - you lucky bastard! I want an R3 now too!!!! :)

Or even as DNG, which is probably more suited for the job :)
