I just purchased one myself in December thanks to Jason Lanier...has taken my work to a whole new level! An excellent video with like you said minimal accessories ..probably one of the best examples I've seen to date other than Jason lol...those two at night with the tree and bokeh...super images!!

Great video Sam, I will be investing in this light soon. I love the look of this light and I think it will be a hug advantage to my senior portrait work. Keeping my gear small and light is a must for me and looking how you used it has sold me. Also I'm a big Jason Lanier fan as well.

Whoa, LOVED this shoot. Stayed for the whole video. I just attended Jason's workshop this week and was considering getting a NEO or ANOVA PRO and see YOU use the Neo like you did and get such awesome results has inspired me to take action and make the purchase. The image with the green tree on the right and lights on the left is STUNNING. I really enjoyed this and I REALLY appreciate how you gave Jason a few shoutouts when using the backlight technique. Seriously great video, thank you!

Beyond cool! I feel like I could actually do some shots like this with a Rotolight, you make it look so easy! Your selection of background colors behind Sam at the table blended very well. I also liked the photos at the brick wall after dark with the shallow depth of field!! My favorite however, was the window reflection image!! Masterfully done! Thank you for sharing!!

Great video that really shows how to get some fabulous shots with that rotolight, something that I will definitely be looking into. Your use of such a simple setup and yielding such amazing photos was truly wonderful to watch, as the ambient light faded the fill from the single light seemed to just make your photos pop more and more the darker it got throughout the evening to such an amazingly beautiful final setup in the street with some truly spectacular shots!!! Wonderful work David and a huge shout out to beautiful Sam for a wonderful shoot and video!

when he came back at 13.00, the light barely changed, I actually think this light only works in dark situations, night time, but for daytime photography it doesent seem to work. For black and white portraits in studio, black background im sure the results will be amazng. You do get the little catchlight in the eyes.

Awesome work David! And Sam Fazz is an amazing model! Ahhh, makes me want to get out and shoot right now! I doubt my cheap-o $25 LED light won't be as nice looking as that Rotolight, but it might be almost as good. I don't think it's as powerful so it probably won't do well if it's too bright out, have to wait for either a cloudy day or for the twilight hours. Question, what lenses were you shooting with for these?

Awesome video, Sam is such a great model! Do you use any of the accessories for the Neo (diffuser, grid, softbox, etc) or do you just use it with a reflector? Adrien McGuire The neo or any LED for that matter does not have the same power. The benefit is in low light situations. You can balance with ambient light for more effect and depth.

+Faraad Haashim Even with In body stabilization in the A7RII the 135mm 1.8 I like to keep my shutter speed at or in excess of 1/100. Some models tend to work fast and don't hold a pose for very long. The IBIS does not stop subject moment just camera shake. I was shooting wide open and the only thing I could do to increase shutter speed is to up the ISO. And Thank you for watching! More on the way.

Thank you for watching! Yes I use the 135mm Zeiss with the LA-EA4 to go from A to A mount. The AF is less than desirable so I use it as a manual focus lens. The optical quality of that lens is second to none.

I'm sure the focus peaking feature makes manual focus that much easier! I've been wanting and waiting to make the switch back to Sony (the RX100 mk1 started my interest in photography) and then went with Nikon since I could get a body and a few lenses for the price of the A7 body.... With the new G-master lenses being released, I'm patiently waiting (and saving) for an update to the A7rII. I may have to wait another year though from the looks of it.

Ok, that does it! I'm getting at least one of these. I like my alien bees and power pack but they are bulky and heavy. Not only that but I often need an ND filter to keep the shutter within sync speed. Something that can be done without filters using constant lights. And at $399 they are so affordable. Thanks for your inspiration!

+Lars Sanen yeah, I guess we're all in different places. Compared to other highly portable light sources this is affordable. But as a student I could see where you are experiencing limitations. I'm an old dude with no kids left at home and no other expensive hobbies.

Please i want to know in your shoot were you using your camera in manual mode or aperture priority and what focal length where you using for the part the model was leaning on the wall (3:29) and on the pole (5:17) and the part she was sitting down on the side of the road (6:11). And finally, what lens range is that?

Would have helped if you'd mentioned the camera settings more often. It's hard to assess the ambient because the video brightens it up much more than the eye sees. I could then assess how much the neo actually adds.

I hate to be "that guy" asking about settings but I have to ask about the shot at 20:15 with the flash from behind. I just tried a quickie version in my house and the flash lit up the hole area around my subject so I didn't get the same "halo". I see no snoot on your flash. How did you control the flash and limit it to just the subject? Thanks!

+in2food The speed light was placed on the ground approx. 4 ft. behind Sam and aimed at her back. I am not sure of the power settings I used but do recall zooming the flash in. I bet if you try again outside in a near dark environment you will get a different look. You won't have surfaces like inside your house that will bounce the light around.

+David LaRochelle Photography Wow David! That was a fast response and so much appreciated. I finally figured out the video constantly adjusts for the light so it is hard to tell what the ambient light really is. Anyway, I'll be trying this out soon as a fun exercise. Thanks for all you do!

Martin Quinn, I used a variety of color settings on this shoot. Daylight during the day but at night I used a variety. One example is camera and rotolight set to daylight. Makes the street lights turn a warm color. Hope this helps answer your question.
