Check out my NEW Skillshare class on drawing portraits!: skl.sh/2DlhBwA
Sorry for that ABRUPT jump into the video XD I filmed this right after filming the first pencil crayon portrait study..!
I deliberately left out the music since I thought the scratching of the paper was satisfying 😁 and also since the sound level of my voice is quite low at times! I didn't try as hard to trim this one down since I figure anyone who watches these kinds of videos is working on something else on the side, so I tried to leave in most of it as possible! Hope you enjoy! :)

I just want to thank you very much for these long, non-edited videos. They are actually super informative and invaluable learning tools. Your description says that it's meant to be "watched on the side," but I actually really pay attention to your techniques, pause, and try to do them myself. So thank you very, very much. Whatever you get from these is like .0001% of whatever someone who watches these gains.

I totally agree. Here I am like 3 hours in and ready to go take a nap and I stopped the video and it's only 6 minutes in hahaha! I can't wait to come back and work on my girl! She's looking an awful lot like yours and the fact that you include the reference picture has been invaluable. I didn't realize how much I would look at that while following your tutorial. I think maybe I'm having an issue with the paper I'm using. I feel like it's already pretty cakey. I am totally fine with starting over I just need to know the best paper to use. I'm using Prismacolors which could also be leading me into trouble even with the least amount of pressure holding the pencil all the way back and sideways. Somehow my girl looks a lot like yours so I'm doing something right. And I used a long time to get the drawing down to begin with. Colored pencils are new to me too. Or pencil crayons as you call them! It's a struggle but I'll get there.

@@codghost9301 It is an unorthodox one but it comes from understanding values and color theory. She is using complimentary colors but she is interpreting her skintones in a much more dynamic way than they really are. If she followed more of an exact shade it would be more realistic but kind of boring 😴.

Back after watching. I gotta say I was so impressed by the hues you managed to see in your reference. I don't think I achieved that yet. My eye can see colors but like not that much and I feel like I learnt so much through your process that I will try to apply next time I sit down to draw something. I gotta say I also love how you use the colored pencils in different directions yet the study has a very cool look at the end and I just love it.

Amazing-again! It was so fascinating and informative, just watching and listening to you think out loud, and seeing the results of each decision. Colored pencil is definitely a good medium for you. The affect of both portraits is a luminosity that was absent in the photo references. You obviously drew on your knowledge of color theory, and understanding of how light defines facial planes, and the use of values throughout brought it all together so beautifully. I’m always so gobsmacked by your abilities as an artist. I kept feeling that each girl could have talked and told the most interesting stories about their lives. Thanks again for allowing us to watch you at work!

How funny, I do the same thing-- I constantly am talking to my self aloud, and usually when i'm alone lol. Don't want anyone to think i'm crazy, but I definitely do this. Especially when I am drawing and am really into what I'm drawing. Also, i really enjoy the laid back style of your videos! All I come for, and I'm sure many others, is to watch the artist do their thing and talk to us during. I think the way you discuss things throughout your videos is great. Because I thought I would not have the patience to do the layering and building up of color slowly - until now! After seeing the effect you achieved and the speed with you were able to get such rich color by using colors I woud never think to use on a face, I am inspired to take out my color pencils and try this. My lovely friend - I am in the same boat, however I have found that if I keep on top of my cleaning (which I sometimes prioritize cleaning too much) it really helps maintaining a calm environment. I used to be a complete disaster but as I’ve gotten older it has become so much easier. I worked really hard at being an organized person. Would it help if you vlogged reorganizing and decorating your room? Or contacting someone else that could help you find solutions to contain your “mess”? Sometimes just having a place to hide the mess from even yourself is helpful. My house, for example, is very clean looking and is often complimented for being well decorated and clean - but honey, if you open any of my drawers... apocalyptic disaster. At my job, I am very organized but my drawers throughout my house tell another story.

It amazes me the amount of color variation you can get with just colored pencils. Your videos are always enlightening and this time, in particular, I couldn't help but think about how I would approach things. It gives me something to compare and contrast my working steps to and ways I can change those to try and achieve a particular result. In short, I like these longer videos. (and I hope it's not too weird to say your voice is very soothing. I almost fell asleep because of it but I was too interested to see how it would turn out! lol) I get the having a hard time to break into something (I keep telling myself I'll get around to making a youtube video eventually, or to follow this idea or that one), but if you really want to do it, you're just gonna have to fail at it at first. Just like art. (Why do we do this to ourselves again? lol) In all seriousness though, you've cultivated an audience who enjoys your art, enjoys you. I'm sure whatever you want to do you'll do great at it.

Interesting comment on people preferring your studies more on instagram- I showed my art account to a colleague once and she told me she liked my realistic portraits better than my illustrations. It felt disheartening because the reason why I do studies is to improve my drawing from imagination, and for me studies require less effort and they never really feel like they are in 'my style'. I always really love your illustrations for being stylised, and seeing how it even comes through in these portrait studies is also lovely. I really hope instagram doesn't discourage you from sharing your illustrations

Chris, two things, I think it might be best for you and everyone not to take any one person's suggestions to heart. Like the girl who said for you to talk a certain way. You cannot please everyone, so just be yourself. I like you the way you are. Now, one thing I personally think, is that all your art is good, but your portraits have a distinctive look, I automatically know they are yours, and they are nice. So that kind of shows maybe you should go with what you love, and when you get lots of likes it is because they are really special.

The way you can learn this is to blow up a photo and really zoom in there. Then you will see greens and blues and purples and yellows. Then just start painting, keeping in mind to use those colours. I for example love using light blue and light yellow for highligts and purple and green for shadows. Dark blue for really dark shadows. A regular blue works well as reflective light in a shadow area. It is mostly trial and error and what's up to your taste, but those are the colours I love using. And I also love leaving visible, unblended strokes of bright yellow/ green/ purple/ blue ect in random places to create visual interest.

I wonder if the reason you found the shadows on the right side (closest to the viewer) to be weak is because the shadows on the cheek farthest away from the viewer were too dark and through off the values? But overall I love how vibrant and lively your colored pencil figure studies are, I wish I could discern color the same way you do😊

You are an amazing artist & probably have already learned this as this video is a year or so old but to remove the grainy texture it is best if you use a very sharp pencil to go into the grain of the paper. You can also use hot press paper too. Honestly you are so much better than I am especially at getting a likeness but that little tip is just something that has stuck with me. Thank you so much for these tutorials, they are excellent!

You can get rid of some of the texture and do extra blending using a Copic colorless blender or something similar. There are also colored pencil blenders but personally I've never used them, but I hear they're useful!

Have you tried acrylic inks? They might be a good medium for you. I know you like to layer your watercolors and like flat washes.

Have you ever tried blending colored pencils with solvent? I use Gamsol and it's absolutely amazing and makes the pigments much richer/darker (not necessarily darker, just a tiny bit- that's why I usually just say "richer")- but I like how it pushes the colored pencil into the paper texture and gets rid of the cloudy/sketchy crayon look

It has been noted that women can be kept from their art by the idea their space should be clean and organized first. It gets in the way. Your space is usable by you for you. I love your videos. I also like your stream of consciousness talks. You are just starting. In the future, it will all come to you with ease. I like these videos as-is. I love your artwork. I learn things. Take care and don't let fear rob you of your dreams. You've got this.

I have this on the fastest speed and your voice still sounds normal 🤣. I love the neon effects but that neutral skin tone is very hard to color for me so you did really well.

What you said about instagram nature is very true..! This happens to me as well, and in the past I gave this much more importance than I should had. While planning a drawing I thought about how it'd look from the explore page, if it'd fit into a square, if it'd look good in my gallery etc... Though all what I had to focus on was what I wanted to draw. Art is not at all about likes. I'm pretty sure a lot of my works would turn out more sincere if I understood it earlier. So please, don't care about it too much. Only care about it when it essentially affects your earnings (I found you very recently and as I understood you earn your living by drawing). You're a wonderful artist, and what you create cannot be measured by such meaningless things like comments, likes or shares.

I love this. I love listening to you talk. I would not worry about being messy. I have been doing art for 30 years and have a room that has art supplies everywhere and for all those years I have been wanting to organize my shit but just have not. I think a lot of artists are the same. I hope after 4 years your not worring about that so much. As before watching and listening to you is very satisfying. Keep up the good work.
