I personally would love to see more stuff like this. If there's a way for you to combine your personal studies with videos/tutorials/in-depth talks about them I'd surely join a patreon. I wouldn't mind complete breakdowns of a portrait study like this.
Your work is beautiful. Don't give up before you've started. Just because you left a full time job doesn't mean you can't go back to it. Keep at it for at least 6 months!
'with photos you can usually find the right angle.' for me thats not true i go on pintrest for my references and end up looking at memes instead of actually looking for a study reference lol

It blows my mind that someone with your skill level, technique and imagination has these kinds of doubts. It makes me start doubting about my journey which is kilometers behind from yours and make me believe I will never make it. then I remember how ridiculous it is for someone like you to have doubts, and that in a way we're dealing and fighting anxiety and fear that comes with that anxiety. It's all in the head, there is no reason whatsoever that you should doubt if you put the work in. I'm rooting for you! I need to say that to myself as well and believe it.
I edit for a living and the thing that really helps out when it comes to producing videos is to be organized before you start cutting it. You have to develop a road map for where you're going and what you're doing or else you will get overwhelmed. It also helps to understand how to use the time saving shortcuts built into the editing software. Being able to keyboard edit rather than relying totally on the mouse will really cut down the amount of time you're spending doing the actual cutting. A huge part of editing is knowing what to leave out, rather than what to put in. Good luck. Your art is very lovely.

thanks for those tips! I could def use to plan a little better, I use keyboard shortcuts but editing still takes me forever XD;;; especially the audio, editing out all the awkward pauses and "um"s XD

I gave myself time to verify your advice ... Thank you. It is a very good one indeed.
i just tried doing the blocking for the sketching and it really helped? like, really, really helped!!
My mind is blown...you have an INCREDIBLE gift to share with the world!!! Keep faith and patient and keep posting!!! So inspiring.
The thumbnail immediately caught my eye bc I painted the girl with the beret last summer while doing watercolor studies haha 💕 love your work
A tip my mum always told me, is to turn everything upside down as you won't focus on the face perhaps that your drawing, but the shapes you can see
I love your honesty. You relate an artists’ mental side better than anyone. And I so relate to that. Ordered a print and love your videos
Great video. I like the blocking in with transfer paper thing you did
Found this from recommendations! If you are seeing this, Look at where you came from and look at you now!! You’ve come so far!!
I love your drawings, recently I’ve been trying to get into digital art. But gosh is it challenging, I’ve been putting off digital art for years because I’m too much of a perfectionist. I completely understand you. I love your art style so much
I love to hear your talk which helps me improve my draw skill and English
I really appreciate you sharing your thought process on this vid. Would love to see more content like this in the future on your drawing/painting practices. Love your work btw!
hi Chris! I really love your style and the topics you talk about really inspire me. At times I experience a lot of these problems you talk about that artist’s encounter and it is really helpful to know that I’m not the only one. Keep doing what you’re doing❤️
I loved this video. I’m going through similar thoughts although I am still at my current office job of 8 years. I’m proud of you for being able to take that leap! Have faith! I strongly believe in serendipitous moments, and they will lead you to where you need to be. ☺️💛
i can't get over how beautiful your portrait studies are. I'm such a big fan of your work!
YOU'RE AMAZING AT THIS! You have accumulated such a great and firm style: your pencil work is very detailed and you keep the shapes that add more structure to the shading for instance. You know how to shade, how to add gesture, etc, so keep going, you're doing great, i'm jelly on your abilities! You draw like a master back in the very old days, the way you use your pencil strokes and shapes!
can i just say how thankful i am for the book recommendations? like keep em coming!!!
Many nuggets! Beautiful to watch you sketch! ❤
Your work is amazing. You’re a huge inspiration and you’re only improving (even though I dont see how you’re already so amazing). I look up to you, so many people do!
I really really like your videos! I find them unique and this particular one was extremely helpful in the way you explain your process by breaking down the single steps. I‘m sure you will be a massive success on youtube
I love your art works ❤️ it´s really though how we can doubt ourself so much. Take your time and be kind for yourself
Thank you for the helpful video! The transfer paper at the end does a great job of showing how unified shapes make the image.
I really love your art, and ever since I've seen you on instagram, I've just been mesmerised! Keep up the lovely work!
I love this honest talk from the past. See where you are today and that this was the beginning of your independent artist journey it's so encouraging. I'm at my starting phase to became an independent artist. I love your work so much and love to hear your thoughts and your teaching so thank you Chris from the past and the present your an awesome artist. ❤💖
You are one of my favourite artists EVER and I'm so happy that you posted that video! I feel like I've learned so much! I love your studies and i wanted to know how you do your shading... I'm just really thankful. Take your time, go find your way of time management and doing things. You're already doing great, because most artists start with a really bad audio, and yours is great! I personally look forward to next videos (even though I still have two more to watch). Best wishes for you! And merry christmas!

It is great to have you back and I am glad that you are feeling better now. I just found your videos and made sure to subscribe. You are an amazing artist and I know it is hard at time to not doubt yourself. I think that is a curse many of us artists have but it also keeps pushing us to improve. You are a wonderful artist however and you will be very successful. Please keep pushing forward and sharing your amazing artwork along with your stories. Excited to see more of your videos in the future :)

New subbie here. I absolutely adore your style. I am trying to find my way back into a regular art practice after losing my son just over 3 years ago. It's very hard to do but I am sure that if I manage to begin drawing and painting again, it will be a huge help towards starting my healing process. Watching you draw and listening to your tips are definitely pushing me in the right direction. THANK YOU

Hi! I know this was 2 years ago and I'm super late but I wanted u to know how much u taking in video meant for me. I'm about to open an online store and that's scaring me a lot haha so hearing u talking about your insecurities and knowing now that you're doing well gave me hope that I can manage as well, so thank u. Also, I've been watching a lot of your videos lately and I love them! Thank u for sharing your processes of creating 💕
Thank you for sharing with us. Your art is pop and realistic💕
I love your approach to portraiture! Particularly how you use planar analysis and reveal the 3-D forms within the face and head. I'm looking forward to showing your work and videos to my high school students. I know they will love your style! Good comments on how helpful doing studies from photos can be, and how to choose your photo references too.

I'm new to your channel and I love all of your videos! I've watched them all already but replays them every time I do my studies. It's like having a sesh tho virtually haha
Love your art as always !
the thing about social media is that people tend to put their best face best work best everything forward and we tend not to see the background work that is needed.. it is easy to look at the end result and feel instantly intimidated that we’ll not be able to match up with that standard.. but you do you chris, don’t compare :) you’re doing great I love your art

Yayy!! New video ! I LOVE IT!💕💕
Loved this video. Great artwork and advice.
Hi! I love your work (and play and study😉)! I'm watching this in janvier 2022 and I hope that things are better now and your worries during this video gone. 🙂🙃🙂 Your art is beautiful and I enjoy watching you work/study. I'm learning a lot from you and your point of view. I started out as a watercolorist (about 41 years ago 😬), but, as things often do, my watercolors eventually changed to pastels (soft) then, finally to silk painting. I paint portraits on silk of people, pets, horses, water birds (ducks, heron, pelicans) and wildlife. After watching this video I think doing studies using the dyes on silk and paper is a great idea! Thank you for generously sharing your process, thoughts and knowledge, as well as your God-given gifts with us all! Thank you, Chris! 😃
Such great video Chris... Plenty of inspiring tips... thanks for doing this :)
Yayy chris, finally... i really like your voice actually, and again, just have fun while doing your content, and i'd like to see your sketch with gouache. Thx chris ! ♡~

I Stumbled onto your channel while i was in a stump. I had been struggling with self-doubt since i dropped out of an art school because of financial issues. I was mad, confused and abit lost on where to go. Been procrastinating the past 6 months. Idk, i hated myself for not doing anything about it. But watching this kinda cheered me up abit , might try studying art again after so long. Thanks for making this vid. Will try to sorta try my best XD.
This was so helpful to watch. I'm just starting to learn how to draw faces right now.

Chris Hong Art Wishes DO come true! 💙
Really loved how the sketches turned out! I start my sketches really similarly. I love how personal you are with your videos, sharing exactly what you're thinking and why. Also, I think some other artist youtube stockpile 2-3 videos, so they can seem like they're produced more frequently or at least on a schedule. Maybe if you don't feel like drawing, you can talk about your experiences with your art school or your past jobs over sketches like this or over thumbnail paintings for future drawings? I know people(including myself) love hearing about it!

Wow, those are your study's amazing! I loved the portraits. I'll use your example in some studies, thank you very much for the video.
Thanks for the recommendations. And inspiration. :)
Good luck to you! I always thought working at home is time saving, but it can be a real energy drainer, too. Figuring out a routine to everything and finding balance in swichting things up and refreshing them is key, I guess. But you're gonna make it, we can see your abilities! :D
I’ve been using a useful technique I decided while doing a nude painting study using an oval and just matching the length of the face and drawing in the nose first specifically the nostrils.
Gorgeous!
Very nice all sketch
An awesome weird grip you got there! This gave me an inspiration to work with portraits again :D
