    This looks like a great way to have french toast. I grew up in a French Canadian home, and my mother added a little real maple syrup instead of brown sugar, but added cinnamon, and a little nutmeg in with the egg. With real maple syrup on top. What a way to start the day.

    Dear Jean, MyGerman mother used to make this just like yours, so I know it's top of the line! Perfect to the ones who want the true French Toast! Not a speedy recipe or a fancy recipe. Just what us oldtimer Germans jumped out of bed for! Lookers, look no further. This is the vintage German method (too) even with some fruit. You you cannot get any purer than this if you want very old methods that give you perfect French Toast that I was fed in the morning in the 50's from someone born in the range of 1900. Merci Jean!

She spoke the Swiss-German dialect of Zurich, plus spoke proper German and French excellently. Jean-Jacques Bernat's accent sounds very much like my mother's did. Interesting! Perhaps his origins were in a more southerly part of France 🇫🇷?

    I think there are many versions of French Toast. No one is right or wrong, just different. Back in the 70's there was a recipe for French Toast in a magazine that was part of an article on Carol Burnett. It was a recipe she used for her family. I have been using it ever since. It has grated orange rind and cinnamon added to egg and milk mixture, then dusted with powdered sugar when finished. My family loved it. I use coconut oil to cook with now and it adds an interesting flavor in.

    That's gourmet french toast ! My mom used to make it for "le gouter", the afternoon after school snack. But french toast is usually made with slightly stale bread rather than brioche, in fact it's called "pain perdu" (lost bread) in french. And I never had it with berries and coulis, rather on its own with maybe a sprinkling of brown sugar with cinnamon, and no sugar in the batter. But that's the way my mom made it. I guess every mom had her own recipe.

  • @jensclarberg6419

    @jensclarberg6419

    Yes, similar story here. In Sweden we call them 'fattiga riddare' which means 'the poor knights' because you are using stale, left-over bread. I find using fresh bread just gets too soggy. Also, we just make it with eggs, milk with a pinch of salt and then sprinkle cinnamon on top whilst frying the bread. We then serve it with a jam (I prefer lingonberry jam). So there's really no need for sugar, syrup, vanilla extract etc.

    My version of french toast (from a Jew raised in Montreal): Eggs, touch of milk, pepper, garlic w/butter, parsley. Slightly stale bread Cook bacon first, reserve grease. Use grease as oil and cook 2 pieces at a time max without letting them soak, creates soggy middle, Le puke. Cover with real maple syrup. Voila!
