Real 737 Captain Tutorial | Engine Failure on Final | Continue or Go-Around?

Engine failures are incredibly rare, but it could happen at any time. Today I’ll be showing you how to recognise an engine failure in the Boeing 737NG before landing and review the options available
===========================================================================
The primary purpose of this tutorial is to give you the opportunity to see how a Real 737 Captain operates a desktop simulated aircraft using real world operating procedures.
Whilst every effort is made to accurately replicate the way the aircraft is flown based on my experience as an Airline Captain and Type Rating Instructor, this is purely for entertainment only.
If you happen to be a line pilot or training pilot you must not follow the guidance in this tutorial, it is purely for non-professional computer simulated flight. Only consult your approved material from your respective operator.
Personal questions and queries regarding my employment status will not be answered.

    It’s in case of an evacuation, same as during an rto as it functions as a slide. The 73 being low to the ground just uses the flaps as a slide :)

    flightdeck2sim Total noob here but as you stopped near a taxiway why didn't you just roll a few hundred feet and clear the runway and then stop and get the control tower to do a visual? Bit like getting a broken down car off the motorway lanes and into the hard shoulder? Cheers.

    Hi Scotty63! Good point, with an engine failure at such a late stage you cannot really diagnose the engine failure. It might have simply flamed out, have severe damage or it could be leaking all sorts! If unsure best come to a full stop ASAP to complete any memory item and then decided to vacate. Same applies with a high speed RTO. FD2S

    Out of interest, would you also retract the flaps to 1 on a go-around when doing a normal flap 15 approach with 2 engines? Or would you do gear up first, and then retract that flaps as you would in a flap 30 or 40 go around?

  • @flightdeck2sim

    @flightdeck2sim

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi George! Great question, with two engines if your flaps are F15 or greater retract them to F15. For flap settings less than F15 leave them where they are when you initiate the go around and then continue flap retraction as usual. FD2S

    You mentioned that the FO would make the call to ATC. Would (s)he do anything other than memory items for a failure on final? Would the full checklist only come out in the event of a go-around?

  • @flightdeck2sim

    @flightdeck2sim

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Kevin, very much dependent where you are and the nature of the emergency. Less than 500ft you really don’t have the time to start initiating memory items/checklists. A few miles before PM might have time to complete any applicable memory items. If you initiate a missed approach the memory items must be executed as soon as possible once you’re above 400ft. FD2S

    @@flightdeck2sim I figured as much. In this tutorial, it just spooled down at 700 ft or so. What would the FO have done had it been accompanied by a bang and a fire warning? And what, if anything, would prompt a go-around once you are that low? Thanks! Love the channel!

  • @flightdeck2sim

    @flightdeck2sim

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@kevinkirkland8762 same as above, dependent on the nature of the emergency. Time permitting PM will carry out any memory items. You would have to initiate a go around if in IMC or if you still didn’t make the stabilised approach criteria. FD2S

    @@flightdeck2sim thank you very much Captain. Could you make an in-depth video on the autopilot system of the 737, especially information in respect to the PFD. For the example the airbus has all the information about the active autopilot modes given in the PFD with specific colour coding and boxes or stars. So is there something similar in the 737.
