List of changes: Warlock: - Pact Magic returns with the same progression and rules. - Level 1: Eldritch invocations are now available from level 1. Subclasses have been moved to level 3, and Pact Boons have been made into Eldritch Invocations that can be taken at level 1. Pact Boons have also seen the following improvements: - Pact of the Blade - From the way they talk about it, I think the weapon you summon with Pact of the Blade now uses your Charisma modifier. Glad Hexblade is dead but also oh my god it’s kind of worse but its also really, really cool. - Pact of the Tome - Not really talked about, but if you can modify more cantrips that Eldritch Blast, then getting access to a wider variety of cantrips is a buff. - Pact of the Chain - More special familiars have been added for each flavor of Patron. Skeleton familiars for Undead Warlocks, tiny sphinx for Celestials, etc. - Pact of the Talisman - This is the section about Pact Boons and this is certainly one of them. Level 2 Cunning Magic: Warlocks can regain an unspecified amount of Pact Magic back. I imagine it’ll be like one Spellslot or maybe you can Short Rest in a minute like the Monk could in the UA. It’s decent. - Level 3 Pact Spells: When you choose a subclass at 3rd level, you now automatically gain all the spells in the expanded spells list for your specific patron. These spells do not count against the number of spells you can prepare. Oh my god this gives Warlocks way more spells known, this is huge. - Warlocks gain an ability to speak directly with their Patron. I believe this was a free prep and use of the Contact Other Plane spell with no chance of failure in the most recent UA Warlock. I like it. - Mystic Arcanum returns. - Epic Boon added at 19th level. Archfey: - Now specializes in using an empowered Misty Step to debuff enemies. - Steps of the Fey: You can cast Misty Step a number of times per day (I assume Charisma modifier times per day) without expending a spell slot. Also, when you cast Misty Step (with or without a spell slot), you can add a buff to yourself, such as temp hp, or a debuff onto a nearby enemy, such as disadvantage on attack rolls against creatures other than the Warlock. - At higher levels you gain abilities to punish enemies for attacking you, such as inflicting psychic damage or turning yourself invisible. - 14th Level Bewitching Magic: Whenever you cast an Illusion or Enchantment spell, you can use Misty Step for free. Celestial: - I assume Healing Light returns. Gain d6s equal to Warlock Level + 1 that you can spend as a bonus action to heal yourself or allies. This would be a terrible healer subclass if you had to rely entirely on spell slots to heal. - Celestial Radiance returns with some changes though I didn’t catch any specifics. - Searing Vengeance returns. It’s literally Warlock Self-Res from Destiny 1 for anyone who played that game, however you can now use it on an ally. Fiend: - Spell list has been revisited - Level 3: Dark One’s Blessing has been moved to Level 3. It now also grants temporary hit points for you or an ally reducing a hostile creature to 0 hp within a certain range. - Level 6: Dark One’s Own Luck gains additional uses - Level 10 Fiendish Resilience: Magical weapons no longer bypass resistance on account of magical weapon damage likely no longer existing in the game. - Level 14: Hurl Through Hell returns, though I believe it has been nerfed. Great Old One: - Completely rebuilt like Archfey - Awakened Mind returns, - Psionic Spells: Enchantment and Illusion spells can be cast without verbal or Somantic components. In addition, when you deal damage with a Warlock spell, you can change the damage type to Psychic damage. - Clairvoyant Combatant: Gain bonus in combat to targets affected by your Awakened Mind feature. - Eldritch Hex: Hex gives disadvantage on Saving Throws. Kinda strong, but a little late IMHO. Warlocks also benefit strongly from the new and rebuilt Summon spells, which have been added into their subcalss spell lists.

Well the disadvantage on saving throws at mid to high level is still strong just not as early as some would like. A lot easier to waste a BBEG's Legendary Resistances if they have to try twice to not fail their saving throw.

@@gaelofariandel6747 Disadvantage on saving throws is strong and would be great to combo with a powerful Wizard in the party, but personally I would rather spend my concentration and one of my two or three spell slots on something a bit more flashy and impactful than Hex. I guess it all really depends on how late this feature cones in, but when you have 5th level spells, Hex really doesn’t feel worth it anymore for me, even with the buff.

As someone who's favorite Class was the 2014 Warlock, I am so happy. I always thought Warlock deserved way more mechanical power than it got. I mean, you're selling your soul (or worse) to an otherworldly being, and basically becoming their Servant in exchange for power. It always felt bad to only have one or two spell slots at early levels, but now, I don't even care. I love the idea of picking up multiple Pact Boons. I am worried that at higher levels however, if every Warlock can just get *all* Pact Boons, then they need to make high-level invocations feel truly powerful.

Genie Warlocks) in Zakhara (from the Al-Qadim DnD setting). All Sha’irs needed them to work their magic. As powerful as an individual Sha'ir may be, they were utterly helpless without their loyal Gen. Most Sha'irs would even choose to aid their Gen over a friend or comrade in arms. - essentially a little genie that could live in your Genie Vessel.

The weapon mastery features are something I want to see what Artificers can do with... maybe an item mastery too? I mean isn't anyone a tiny bit curious? I feel like the 2014 "exclusive" subclasses are gonna be fine because a ton of the changes are applying to the base of every class. So even if you're playing a 2014 SwashBuckler Rogue (for instance) you'll still have access to weapon mastery and the cunning strikes etc. But I can understand it being confusing how that'll look/work in-practice. Unless they just completely shit the bed on programming that into the character-sheets properly on DnD Beyond? But definitely shouldn't be an issue for in-person groups using physical sheets etc I am sure a few subclasses will "slip between the cracks" and feel bad as time goes on, but I am also sure smart ppl in the community will convert many to mesh better into the 2024 version/rules. Or we get a 2024/2025 equivalent to Tasha's or Xanathar's that just fixes and updates the subclasses left behind. I'm sure ppl won't be too happy about that either way, but it wouldn't surprise me.

@@PartTimeEuphoRia Here's the thing though. Warlocks have *one* thing going for them (Eldritch Blast+Agonizing Blast+Hex), and it's something you can pretty much fully realize the potential of with a 2-level dip (or, given Tasha's Cauldron, a one-level dip and a Feat). Everything else the class does, another class does better. The optimal Warlock builds are either Warlock 1 Sorcerer 19, or Hexblade Warlock 3 Paladin 17 if you want a gish build. Blade Pact dipping seems to have gotten easier if anything, but honestly? I think between the nerfs Paladin has gotten and the more viable Warlocks, especially Archfey with its teleporting around, it's honestly at a point where going full Warlock might be competitive.

I understand being worried about the ability to use your adventure books, but the conversions should be very easy. Skills, DCs, and HP have largely remained unchanged. The new Monster Manual is being rebalanced with the same CR, so if you want to have a goblin ambush with a pit trap... all you need to do is use the new goblin statblock from the new MM, and everything else can remain the exact same. And, if you are finding the average hp for monsters is not enough with the increase in player power, you can always buff it up a bit. I've often found it helps with a fight to use the max value of the monster hp (or near max) instead of the average, to give a proper heft to some fights.

@@sharalakid true, but to be honest, I’d be less afraid of that Warlock than one that decided to go balls to the wall on Pact of the Tome or Blade. THAT bastard plus Archfey would give your DM fits. “I take my Attack action, stab the guy twice, Misty Step away, give him disadvantage on all attack not aimed at me, and then move 30 feet away.” “Cool, I use my mental connection to their Cleric to drop an Agonizing Blasted Mind Sliver. Make your save at disadvantage or take an average of 12 damage and pretty much guarantee you fail you oh-so-important Concentration Check.” Specialised Warlocks are going to be terrors. Generalists Warlocks are going to be nightmares. Heh imagine getting captured, all your stuff’s taken away, and you don’t care because your inquisitive little Sphinx buddy can go get your Pact Weapon back for you.

@@nocteexmortis979 I see your point, but my posts were more from an excited warlock main's perspective. From a dm's perspective my advice on handling this warlock is... Well... Get good. I'm sorry, but a pure 2024 warlock isn't on the level of builds you could be facing, even in 2014, and while I understand how this can frustrate newer dm's, I personally think that struggling to handle the 2024 warlock is nothing more than a tool to take your first baby steps in the world of handling powerful characters, because like I said, it's cool, it's strong, but it could've been worse.

I can see DM banning warlocks or just forcing the old warlock or forcing them only to get hp evy other level up or a lower hit die. This just seems way to OP

As a DM and a player, I’m liking what I’m seeing so far….. even the Paladin (yes, smite was limited but other things were improved). I’m seeing more balance between the classes even though there is still power creep. I’m interested in the updated monster manual and the changes there. That is where the rubber meets the road with encounter building and what the classes can do.

Gonna be the same way for cleric. You have to accept that it was vital to standardize level 3 subclasses for balancing. It’s up to the player and DM to make it make sense at that point. The pact can exist but maybe the patron isn’t yet bestowing such powers yet. Or the Character has to grow in strength to be able to handle such the greater powers the patron can grant.

@@takeshimovies5869 They also say themselves that they recommend veteran players start at level 3. If you make a completely new player choose a subclass at level 1 then you are adding quite a bit more for them to read about and learn while making their character on top of EVERYTHING ELSE a new player needs to learn when making their character. It's better for a new player if they get to play for 2 levels, learning and better understanding the game, before they choose their subclass. Please just genuinely take a step back and think the whole thing through from other people's perspectives and consider the larger picture. "Just choose the subclass at level 1 even if you don't get ANY abilities until level 3" is the EXACT same as just saying you already have that patron at levels 1 and 2. It's a game of make-believe and imagination, USE IT. The game doesn't have to tell you exactly how to treat and flavor your character, spells, and abilities.

I have never been a fan of warlock flavor since it tends to make you a slave in the eyes of others instead of a student or someone with their own powers. To the point DMs think they can take your powers away like a cleric. However apart from that part I definitely like how it plays. Especially now that it has Skeleton pet. I just wish DND would make a Magus instead of making the Warlock take that role.

These changes sure sound interesting. I am happy for the players but I lost my hope for the GM. The one player with the most influence on a game. Its clear to me, that WotC just tries to hype up the majority of the community to buy their products and totally forgets the actual most important customer and the customer who pays the most money. Its also no wonder, that WotC also is probably starting to implement AI DMs, because who wants to DM a game where the PCs are literal halfgods fighting against Goblins starting from Level 1. The game starts to feel more like Diablo in a way.

Unfortunately I don't think that will ever change, simply because of spells. Spells are so versatile and get so powerful at higher levels that they would have to literally redesign every single level of every single martial class to balance them, because every level full spellcasters are progressing with their spells.

@@Bookworm159 Wouldn't take much of a redesign to feel better. You could just give all martials more feats like how the fighter works. Or something to that effect.
