Sneak attack to knock out a enemy has already been a thing you just declare that the damage is non lethal thatvway if it goes down to 0 then they are not killed but knocked out.

As previously defined, only *weapon* (and unarmed strike) damage could be nonlethal. Sneak Attack dealt the same type of damage as the weapon, but was itself not actually weapon damage and therefore could not be nonlethal.

sneak attack can't be nonlethal RAW, though most DMs would probably let it be anyway

@@phntmthf5505 Not quite - any *melee* attack could be nonlethal, so by RAW that also includes spell attacks. "Sometimes an attacker wants to incapacitate a foe, rather than deal a killing blow. When an attacker reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack, the attacker can knock the creature out. The attacker can make this choice the instant the damage is dealt. The creature falls unconscious and is stable."

Starting at first or third level (or higher) depends on the experience of the party, as a suggestion. Lower levels gives players more time to learn how their character and the game works instead of dumping more abilities or maybe enemies with more abilities on them right away.

The big take away from this im getting is that 2024 ruleset will not be actively considering interactions with the 2014 ruleset moving forward so those looking to blend things based on the 2014 ruleset into 2024 ruleset will have to adjudicate things for their own table on a case by case basis

It makes sense. You can drive your older 2014 Nissan on the new 2024 roads and go 65 mph down the highway. Or you can drive the new 2024 Nissan down the 2024 roads. They are compatible. But it would be less fun to drive your 2024 Nissan down the old 2014 roads at 35 mph and hit all the potholes and traffic lights. Basically, that old route 66 is drivable with both cars, and Lightning McQueen might find some new friends, but he is made for that new highway and the highway is made for everybody.

For the "Backwards compatibility" piece: Pretend the 2014 Rules are an Xbox ONE and the 2024 Rules are the Xbox Series X/S. Your character made with the 2014 Rules is an Xbox ONE game, and your character made with the 2024 Rules is an Xbox Series X/S game. You can't play an Xbox Series X/S game on the Xbox ONE, but you CAN play an Xbox ONE game on the Xbox Series X/S. Hope this helps with any confusion anyone might have had about that particular topic!

so I do homebrew, it's been my most enjoyable way to explore the realms of TTRPG's to their fullest. 40 years now, i was thinking, would players and GM enjoy a system that isn't built around the rules, more maps, places, things lots and lots of things, but all built to be dropped into any rule system, you build the characters kinda things and decide the rules you want to use for those characters and then they can take those characters into a place that is open to almost any style of play. do you think it would work, you talked about putting your throwing it back Pally and AddBarian to a system, they would work in my world

I have no idea what will happen in regards to having to buy these new books, or if they'll just remove and replace them, however, what I do know is you still have time before this edition rolls out so, you still have a decent time before those books come out

This new edition isn't out for a few more months and even then it will take (I assume) a few years before the majority of players transfer over. It might have a short uptake of people trying it and then going back to 2014 5e.

Do we know if the new player's handbook is going to replace the old one in dndbeyond? I feel like they would just get rid of it to make room for the new one but idk

I'm just a bit worried that all the 3rd party stuff (Humblewood, Dark Matter, Floral Dragons, Ryoko's Guide, Dalriada, etc) that I got to expand 5e will be incompatible when it comes to subclasses. This is where the "you can play 2014 characters with the 2024 rules" helps, but how off will it be?

If a thing in 2024 PHB has the same name as something previously released, use the 2024 version. If a pre-2024 thing is not in the new book, it can be used and it will work, and the new book will probably have bridging language that helps smooth out any rough spots.

Just felt like I should note for those claiming that this looks like "D&D Baldur's Gate Edition"; Mike Mearls made those parts of BG3 happen, not the leftovers.

Have they mentioned anything about how DNDBeyond is going to react to the new changes? Am I going to log in one day to find all my 5e characters ported to 6e? Will there be a toggle in character creation to make a character 5e vs 6e?

Well it will probably be in the character sheet you can pick between X class 2014 and X class 2024 as separate class options as an example. Though only if you own that older content like how they did when they updated race options

Oh and I absolutely hate Bastion. Why was it needed to be part of core rules?

I mean we have known this for ages, ever since during UA they announced all classes would only get 4 Subclasses. Cleric and wizard hopefully their cut Subclasses updated at somepoint.

Its irrelevant, anything that wasn’t revised still works with new classes.

NGL. Fey Step looks kinda crap. Warlocks are squishy and bampfing around the battlefield isn't going to matter in terms of strategy. You'd be far better off taking Spell Sniper feat and staying in cover away from the bbeg. Even if this ability is a bonus action, 30 ft isn't going to stop a Raging Barbarian from clobbering you. I invested a decent amount of effort into figuring this out because I wanted to offer it to a new player and playtest it. I have a 50+ hr workweek and thought it'd be exciting. I hope they've got something better in mind. Before you at me: I've put this together because I'm running Candlekeep Mysteries and there's an Archfey boss. The ability is named "Fey Step." They mention "moving around on the battlefield" in the video. Also, if I'm not mistaken, it's the same team who worked on Candlekeep.

Fey Step can also cause many other effects. It may add temporary HP, cause fear or confuse people, charm, and many other things.

Reading the comments in both the video and Twitch chat just made me realize, you lot can complain about literally anything 🤣

It also makes a great case for making sure your communication is crystal clear. 95% of problems people had have since been clarified into non-existence.

The PHB preview makes me want DC20 more. This really did a disservice to D&D

I've heard good things about it, I've been playing 5e but might start with pathfinder also.

anyone with a half a brain will want to use the 2024 content.. if a a rule, fea, spell, sublcass etc has been REWRITTEN use the NEW RULES, otherwise you cna sue any old subclass that hasnt bene rewritten with the new classe,s and SURE! you cna play an old class, but why would you given the choice?.. COMPATIBLE does nto mean balanced.. the new rules ar ejsut bette,r they offer better balance, rules clarifications and quality of life improvements...its your choice but poeple need to use their heads.. you can drive an old car or a new car, and they BOTH run on GASOLINE but YOU WANT THE NEW CAR... duh :D
