Re cutting the crown on an air rifle barrel.
Ғылым және технология
Hi guys today we have a vid on re-cutting the crown on an Airmaks Katran barrel, this barrel is a CZ one and the original crown was a little off center, in this vid we re cut it and test it. all tests were done at 50 yards and as always we are working on sub 12 lb/ft rifles. Thanks for watching.

Another great video jake , there's so much time that goes in to all you're work but I think it's the quality of you're workmanship that needs the time and effort you always put in .

Yes! A dremel! finally something I could have a crack at.....oh wait....no lathe. Doh! really clear video and something you call simple would have me scratching my head for months! I was waiting for a burst of Frank Sinatra (my way) though 🙂 Love these videos!

You can improve a rough crown by simply rolling 800-1200 sand paper into a blunt cone. Push the paper in the barrel 3-4mm and twist it back and forth 6-8 strokes. Rotate the barrel 90 degrees, repeat until rotated 360 deg. This will not fix a truly bad crown, but it will fix rough edges and burrs. It may or may not improve accuracy. This is a very conservative operation, and won't hurt the crown. Tip: Look at the crown with a 10x loupe and strong light before and after. You may see tny burrs that got smoothed off.

Yep another good tip, especially if you don't have a lathe, Thanks for watching.
Hello again, I'd very much like your opinion on what criteria indicator and specification being the most important parameter/s that make any barrel consistent and accurate. Would those parameters change depending on power levels? I'd be happy to hear your reply. Consistently accurate is the name of the game. Cheers
Ever used a muzzle lapping tool to refinish an existing crown? Any chance of a video of that and before and after results?
Excellent informative vid 👌 I'm struggling to get good accuracy out of my vulcan 2, maybe my barrel has a bad crown. Cz barrel

could be 😀
It's not only a matter of the pellet leaving the crown cleanly, it also needs to leave the crown evenly around the entire circumference.

Yes i agree 👍
Does it effects on your accuracy and distance?

Hello, random question, do you know if the STX barrel system from an impact will fit onto a dreamtac without the shroud is this possible, I'm looking to stiffen up my dreamtac barrel, many thanks

Yes should do no problem, the barrels should fit. Thanks for watching.
How can I contact you? I have a new Styre Pro X I want to thread and re crown, looking for advice. I have a precision lathe in the shed, gauge pins, an adjustable 5c collet chuck... as far as I can see there should be no problem doing this, just have a couple of questions on 'acceptable' runout and your opinions on tools for cutting.
Another amazing video sir 🫡

Can I ask how far past the transfer port does your riffling start, Does you pin push the pellet into the riffling or does the pellet sit in the smooth chamber.
@sub12airgunners
2 жыл бұрын
The rifling starts immediately after the transfer port the pellet is pushed into it via the pin probe, nice and gently the pellet is fully engaged with the rifling so both head and skirt of the pellet are in the rifled section. Thanks for watching
@PeakyBlinder

@@sub12airgunners that's interesting, The rifling on my cricket tactical starts 15mm past the transfer port, the pin only drops the pellet into the chamber where it seems very loose, unless I use a longer slug, I would have thought it would be right on the end of the transfer port. Very strange.
Thanks its now my choice too:)

Off topic I know, out of interest how would you go about machining an o ring groove inside a .22 barrel. Thinking about try to machine one out of a barrel blank but not got a tool small enough, just wondering if you had done this Thanks great video as always 👍
@sub12airgunners
2 жыл бұрын
I have cut loads of them you just need to get a small enough tool or grind one yourself, I get mine from a place in the UK called Cutwel, they are called microscope boring inserts, I do have a video in which I explain the o ring grooves if you look on the channel for the Making FX .177 barrel Part 3 the transfer port and supports, that might give you a little extra help. hi, what lathe do you use? can you recommend me some good budget lathe for hobby use?
@sub12airgunners
2 жыл бұрын
I use the Warco GH1230, a nice lathe although a bit big for hobby use, I started off with the WM180, lots of people over the world re-badge it, and I highly recommend it, cheap enough to try the machine work out and sturdy enough to do most small jobs, its not perfect but good enough for making small parts. Thanks for watching.
Do you service airguns for other people?
@sub12airgunners
2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not, we only work on our own rifles. Thanks for watching.
have you ever had a bad crown but the rifle was very acurate but when you put the supressor on it would destroy all the baffles
@sub12airgunners
2 жыл бұрын
Sounds more like the thread on the barrel rather then the crown, crowns normally cause erratic or bad accuracy rather than suppressor issues.
G'day, any hope for us expecting and answer regarding accuracy and what's important? See my previous question below.
