James feels so much shame and can hardly think clearly because of it - he has a lack of hope and social ties. Without having your psychological wits about you, acts of kindness like these are just temporary and creates a dreading feeling of a countdown for when the next bouts of deprivation begin.

I don't think Russell does this stuff because he is crazy or that this behavior is strictly a byproduct of drug use. He is trying to re-brand the social norms by placing himself in these situations first hand to see how he feels, reflect upon it, and then deciding for himself how he should feel and behave instead of just taking society's word for it. I think he is more brave and loving than I am, or anyone I have met for that matter. He is trying to show us that the reason we fear what society tells us to fear, is not because what we fear is implicitly dangerous, but because we have been told that bad things will happen if we do these things

***** Getting in a tub with a homeless man and sitting on the street with him does not put yourself in his situation. Brand knows he has the security of a home to go to. Its that lack of feeling secure, feeling you have to beg, not simply trying it out, feeling you have to get naked and let Brand bathe you for a camera, not simply wanting to. Its that lack of choice that Brand simply cannot immolate. As such it all comes across as mocking the poor guy. The begging, dirtiness, addiction, depression are all just bi-products of not having a place to call your own each night. To living your existence with the rug pulled out from under you. Russell did nothing heroic in this video, just hurt a poor man even more.

At the end of the video 📹 Russell looked shocked and you could see sadness in his face with James going back on the streets. Russell witnessed him being so happy about being back with his mates. The look on his face was so genuine they are worlds apart, but in reality this is how it is. It was James way of life, and he didn't want it any another way at the time. He didn't look that happy to be back on the streets, it's a psychological dependency like the shared bond between drug addicts, he's conditioned and for him easier "comfort zone" and he doesn't have belief in himself to be anything more than acting the part of a low rank of society rather than being open to real relationships based on real qualities other than those based on share survival

I've never been technically homeless, i.e. without any other option, but when I was 19 in the late 70s I packed a rucksack, went to northeast Scotland find a job on the oil rigs and camped out by the Hazlehead golf course in Aberdeen for a while. It was the loneliness that got to me as much as the discomfort, coming back in the dark to that one-man tent at night, trying to look as if you have a purpose while wandering the streets by day. It doesn't compare with real homelessness because I knew my parents would have me back anytime, although I couldn't face the sense of failure that would have brought. But it gave me just a small taste of what these people go through, and at least I had a plan, and hope (I got a job offshore eventually) These poor people don't even have that.

@@Sheriff_GrimLaw Sure. Eventually I got hired by one of the oil drilling contractors and started working offshore, 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off so my accommodation was taken care of half the time and the money was very good (because it was dirty, dangerous and physically exhausting work.) After a couple of years I’d had enough of spending half my life on a North Sea oil rig and tried to follow my 3 brothers into IT (they were building successful careers as computer programmers whereas I was a bit of a rudderless ship) so I enrolled on a training course. I had a lot of savings from my offshore work to keep going. But I loathed computer programming, lacked the aptitude for it and flunked the course. Then a friend of a friend told me that an airport near my hometown was hiring temporary ground staff on 6 month summer contracts with the possibility of being made permanent at the end of it. I applied and was taken on, and at the end of summer they gave me a permanent contract. So I did 5 years as a “flight dispatcher” working shifts at the airport till I got the itch and tried a career in sales which I hated and was no good at. Meanwhile a new company back at the airport was looking for experienced staff so I was able to get back in and became the company Training Officer. My big break came a few years later when a new airline set up its base at the airport and was looking for someone with experience to work in overseas ground operations, assisting the manager to manage the services provided throughout a network of destination airports.I spent the next few years Irving out of a suitcase, travelling literally all over the world, averaging 2-3 nights away each week. I was later promoted to become manager of that department. A few years on, after a few changes in the company, the usual corporate in-fighting, back stabbing and office politics started to creep in, so when the company offered generous voluntary redundancy packages to cut back in reaction to 9/11, in anticipation of the travel industry collapsing, I took it and moved abroad to work for an executive aviation handler in Athens, Greece. I did that for a year but it was a lonely isolated existence so after a spell in a Greek hospital following a pulmonary embolism (a near miss for me) I moved to one of the Greek islands to set up a company with an ex colleague providing flight support services to the airlines. Eventually I wanted to use my old contacts to expand the services beyond Greece but he wanted to limit his activities to Greece so we split the company and I relocated back to the U.K., expanding to provide services worldwide. I spent the next few years often working 16 hours a day, running a busy international operation single handed 24/7, but when business eventually inevitably contracted I had made enough money to invest in real estate and built up a modest debt-free portfolio of rental properties to provide a steady source of income, alongside the income from the aviation business. On a personal level, I married quite late and now have an 11 year old daughter to keep me young. And that’s pretty much where Immat now. It’s been a long and winding road but I’m happy with where it led me.

This is so heartbreakingly _real_. There's no fakeness about this, no happy endings or the homeless person having the time of his life, figuring it all out and becoming the man he was always meant to be. No... this is awkward and cringe-y and depressing, and James' life ends because he OD's. This took guts to do on Russell's part.... not many people could. I certainly do not think I could muster the courage or overcome that awkwardness barrier to pull a stunt like this.

Right now you're probably thinking, "Russell is bringing awareness.... blah, blah, blah!". People are already aware. Brand told one of the escorts that the reason he invited James to stay at his place was so Brand could feel closer to the idea of what homelessness was like. The first night he was there Brand is getting in the tub with him. The dude only stayed one night and bailed. Brand took him to a trade-show, out for a fancy dinner, and to work with him. James was probably very uncomfortable. Br

He's a person carrying around massive burdens, just psychological burdens that leave someone incapable of enjoying a fancy meal or whatever it is. Argh, I really feel for the guy... feels he deserves to be on the streets, probably. And he shouldn't. Though, to Brand's credit, he did bring up those points WITH James like about him maybe being patronised, that everyone watching would be wondering. I think he did do a good job.

It could be homeless over health paying for medical treatment or surgery in some places around the world 🌎 The more money they spend on war the less money they have to help fighting homeless. They give money away to other countries to kill people to not save people in there own country. The problem will get worse before it gets better.

I thought a foster home might be more normal, but then I would not have the freedom of living with someone who didn't care what I did as long as I did my chores and did not bother her. I tried panhandling once, in college, to see how it felt and I once danced in a strip club for the same reason. Both were bad but begging was exceedingly worse. I can't articulate how demeaning it is to be ignored, dismissed, shunned. That was years ago. Last winter I took in a homeless man for 7 months. Older, honest, kind. There are many reasons people are homeless and some will stay that way without addressing inner issues that got them there. I felt bad for James. No matter what anybody says, Russell exploited him. That ain't kind. Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of his work and that was long ago. I'd like to know where James is now. If he wasn't paid for the show, maybe the older and wiser Russell would find him and pay him for his services.

I can forgive the flaws in the angles this documentary projects. Its clear to see that he's impulsive and that he learns from his many mistakes. I totally agree with your comment on one side of a psychological level but James also knew before this began that it would end. I'm hoping that James feels he's contributed to a beautiful thing having tens of thousands of people watch this video and hear Russell: how can people make a difference? James: By stopping and talking to us, instead of just ignoring us And I hope this has had enough of an effect on people to stop, say a few words and give someone like James some hope because a lot of the time its the lack of that that puts people on the streets in the first place.

i went to oxford street after i saw this and met up with James, i asked him about his experience with Russell. in a nutshell he said, Russell tried it on him but he refused his advances and thats the reason he left. only joking. I think Russell bit more than he can chew in this case, however, he meant well.

I think we all feel we would like to take a homeless person into our home for a short time and sort them out, but the sad fact is their problems run deep and inevitably they can't stay forever. Most of us can't afford another dependent either so it's a tough situation.

Peter Gartside Well the best thing is a place inbetween the two in my opinion. We shouldn't have to take people in individually and they shouldn't have to pull themselves out alone. That's why we should pay a little in taxes to fund homelessness programs, be those drug rehab, housing benefits etc. I know I'd be on the street a few years ago if it wasn't for my parents being able to loan me a couple thousand to live.

Thomas Smith And this is why the UK is such an amazing place. UKIP supporters and the like would have anyone out of work or non-White on the streets, but the rest of us are proud that we can try and help those who need it.

I've been on the streets a couple of times so I always give people money when I see them begging or I've paid for people to stay in hotels for a few nights when I had a bit of extra money but I wouldn't take anyone in again, for a few reasons. First one is nothing too serious but years ago, I let a lad stay who was supposed to be trying to get somewhere through the homeless team and just sleeping at mine as a temporary thing but he was up all night then lying in bed til 3pm every day, and not trying at all, like he'd got his feet under the table and was gonna live there forever. I'd come home and his dog had pissed and shit on my floor and he'd gone out and left it. A couple of nights he'd snuck out in the middle of the night, leaving the dog inside, coz when we got up in the morning there was loads of food he'd got from the bins of a supermarket. He was known for burgling cars in the past so if he'd done anything bad he could have had my door put in by the police. I told him not to do that and if he got caught doing anything he might end up back in jail and I'd be left with his dog but the next night I heard him trying to creep out again and the dog was still in the sitting room. After 10 days I had to kick him out coz he took the absolute piss. The second reason is much worse. I'm an addict in recovery, been clean for four and a half years, and I go to groups at my local recovery centre. There's a lass who goes there who I consider a friend now, she's an alcoholic but she's got a heart of gold. She's just got out of rehab and is doing well now. There's often people coming to the centre who are homeless and one day last year there'd been this lad none of us knew who said he was sleeping at the beach in a tent and his THIRTEENTH tent had been set on fire so he didn't even have that. I can't remember how long afterwards it was but she came in one day and her face was black and blue, she'd tried covering it with makeup but it didn't work and one eye was red with burst blood vessels. I asked what the hell had happened and she said she'd taken him back to hers coz she felt sorry for him. He was fine for the first night, she'd bought him his drink and a takeaway, let him have a bath and a place to sleep. On the second night he was drinking vodka and she said his whole demeanor changed. He attacked her, battered her so badly he left her for dead with a bleed on the brain. This lass is the sweetest lass you could ever meet so I know it was totally unprovoked, not that there'd be any excuse either way. Unless it was one of my close friends who I know wouldn't take the piss and that I could trust, I'll never take anyone in. You could get killed if it's a total stranger. My friend is lucky she didn't die that night. I feel bad leaving people outside but I can't put my life at risk. If it was really cold and I saw someone outside I'd let them into the building, just not my flat. It's carpeted in the communal areas and there's a room on the ground floor where you could sleep overnight and nobody would be likely to come in. At least they'd have a bit of shelter. I'd offer to wash clothes, feed people, and sort them some cigarettes and anything else they need too. I'll always help as much as I can without actually letting someone stay. They can use my phone to ring the homeless team if they need to.

DESTROY the homeless doc PLEASE....I get the reason & the power of the camera - but it will only work if you were homeless too... being subject and author of your own , in the now, reality. That creates a way in that all participants can allow themselves some authenticity. That doc was so extremely painful that i need to express my critique & can't ,cos i'm here & I dunno where you are & this is directed at you. To anyone watching,"yeah the work of Rustle Brand is a refreshing laugh wiv serious topics, & a great learning tool BUT DO NOT VIEW 'Homeless James". I understand you gotta a heart but fuckin hell remember your junki days & the darkest of times ! if someone wanted a to film you, the gulf between you and cameraman/sound guy etc... is so fucking huge - it can take years & years to re-intergrate, and another zillion years for other regular housed people to understand where he was coming from mentally please don't allow anyone to put it online or anywhere....(unless James gets any royalties or signed something that makes him think he has NO CHOICE) it doest educate & it possibly reinforce old values & attitudes. it really has come to this hasn't it? so, suicide or celebrate? post post post.. what? how did so many brilliant ideas get into the head of this archangel of sickly trivial narcissm? if we stop laughing at his generally unfunny jokes will he go away? hey -- and i don't even hate him -- on the contrary -- but --- do us a favour..

aattitude not sure what "brilliant" means in this context. He is a smart, reflective person. He is open and is trying very hard to do something good, helpful and meaningful. He is easy to relate to - if you are wanting to be ok with your own humanity. Come to think of it, that is brilliant. Not in the clever clever way - though he is very tuned in and very of our time - but because its something sorely needed today, and in the media too! I think we watched a man come of age, in an age (we hope) of spiritual growth

Speaking for myself I am absolutely stunned and furious that ne'er do wells like James exist. The UK is the cradle of civilisation in the west. What with Magna Carta and the Industrial Revolution that spawned a myriad of industry and opportunity this lad only has to knock on an employers door and he would have been set for life. In fact the Brit economy is so swelling they have to reach overseas for workers to fulfill all the thousands of positions required to run this industrious nation. I find no excuse for James at all. The British leaders run by example. They sit on much wealth because we are all on a level playing field and as David Cameron said, we are all in it together. Jobs are trees people with branches reaching out. Just because we all can't be famous can't mean we all can't be reachable to our local altruistic employers. chin chin .

It's called mental illness. Some people have such awful experiences growing up that they are broken. They don't develop the coping skills that you take for granted. You didn't work for these either: they were given to you by your parents or any other role model you had growing up.
