Kind of wild to see Fossil and Bulova at the same tier.
Citizen has so many mechanical watches, including the Promaster range. Myota 8 and 9 series are all Citizen. They also have some very high-end pieces that compete with Grand Seiko.

I was just in Japan and saw a lot of Citizen mechanicals. I think they are mostly JDM. The Eco Drives are bullet proof. Given that Casio got S and only makes quartz I would have ranked Citizen A but I admit they are not as mainstream with watch enthusiasts. I am hoping with the Tyosa they are making some changes. My myota movement watches are super consistent. Overall I say this ranking with all the brands is pretty spot on.

Knocked Timex down for being low quality when an apple watch will literally stop working by design on 3-5 years due to lack of software support and security updates by the manufacturer. 💀 Agreed with everything else on the list and everything you said. Nailed it!

Timex breaks, apple is planned obsolescence. I’m ok knowing the product I purchased has a shelf life, at least it’s transparent with apple and I can plan for the inevitable future upgrade. Timex is just a ticking time bomb waiting to go off and break. There’s a difference in my opinion.

If you go into the Timex purchase expecting planned obsolescence (as I would with say a moonswatch or any other watch that costs less to replace than service) then I'd personally rank things differently. But these are all opinions.
Steeldive and San Martin should be S-tier. Sad that no homage brand made the list.

Agree about Seiko. They are upping their prices, but their QC doesn't reflect that. Citizen do make some very few mechanical watches, after all they own Miyota.
Orient has been a gem. They are incredibly reliable watches, but aren't costing me a ton of money. Not to mention, their Bambino line is nice.
C tier ist just wild. Mido has COSC Movements + !!80!! hours power reserve + 600m WR + adjustable wrist bands + saphire chrystals and amazing beauty/quality in a one watch for about 1500$. And that's in the same tier as Fossil?! Mido is probaply one of the best bang for buck brands in the world.
Seiko and Certina speaks to me. Yeah, Certina is easy to get in Europe. Im currently wearing my DS Action 38mm in titanium right now. It is a amazing watch!
My Orient Triton/Neptune had a broken stem in less than a year old. That has never happened with any Seiko, Mido, Certina or Hamilton I’ve owned. Just my experience
Your list was great and to the point. It’s just that I don’t see Apple as a watch but a disposable.
Great video. 🎉 respect your well informed opinions. I love your Steinhart videos.
Khaki field automatic was my first automatic watch as well, still my favorite watch 😃🙏
Glad to see someone recognize how good Orient watches are. I have several and they keep great time, have excellent build quality, and look fantastic. And yes, they are an outstanding value for the money 👍
Nice one Guy. From my exposure to the brands that you mention not including Apple (I've never tried one) I have to agree with the rankings with one slight caveat. This was a ranking for a brand and not particular watches. So where a brand has a bundle of watch options with only a few great watches at affordable prices the ranking would be below those who have a greater ratio of great affordable options to the rest from that brand. For me I would maybe consider Tissot a 'B-' but that would be by a whisker. As an affordable watch I have to agree that the Apple watch deserves it's position with a caveat that to all intents and purposed it is a disposable watch and like all 'smart' watches I have to wonder what will be recycled. Many thanks for sharing.
Thank you for closer long format video ❤
I’m fully supportive of your decision to B-tier Seiko, guy. They are not good value for money nowadays, when you consider how many other brands have caught up with them for quality, interesting designs, and bracelets, for similar or less money. I have my SARB035 and my SKX009, the rest of my Seikos I sold, and the last Seiko product I bought was an Orient Kamasu. I refuse to pay more than $500 for a Seiko.

Pretty sure Swatch didn't take over Omega. Swatch was formed through the merger of two companies in 1983, one of which, SSIH, was formed by the merger of Tissot and Omega in 1930. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Swatch_Group
I like the video idea, you did a great job, and I’m a big fan. However I disagree with so much of this list. Like, 9/10 people if you asked them which brand is better, Orient or Seiko, would say Seiko. That boggles my mind you think Christopher Ward, Orient, and Hamilton are better brands. And Certina and Fossil on the same tier? Certina is a Swiss brand with heritage, and Fossil makes quartz fashion watches! Apple in S tier is where I know you’re trolling for engagement with these insane rankings. There’s Bulova watches from the 60’s that are still ticking away where an Apple Watch will be a brick in 3 years. You are on absolute crack with this list

Informative video, well done. I think you could give more weight to Seiko solar dive watches ie the solar PADI which I have and is gaining 1sec a month. On accuracy, all mechanical watches become more inaccurate over time, Rolex and Sinn included, so I think this is a bit harsh IMO
@JustBlueFish
Жыл бұрын
I have had a couple Seiko solar watches over the years, they were good watches, but Seiko doesn't put their full weight behind the Solar and quartz models - or so it seems. Their best designs and models are (in my opinion) the solar or quartz models, which is a shame.
Great list! The only thing I will say I don’t really agree about is putting Christopher Ward on here. They don’t have many watches under $1000.
Nice list sir! Enjoyed the video. For me, no way I have fossil in my C tier personally. Like you, I had them growing up as a good, but sentiments aside, they are junk. Personally I’d have timex in the C tier and not B. Although if h they have been coming out with a lot of interesting rereleases over the last few years, I just don’t think their quality is very good. Their solar watches and digital pieces not named Ironman are garbage.
Are you including Oceanus in Casio?
@JustBlueFish
Жыл бұрын
Not really, they’re kinda to expensive to be considered affordable. But like most of the brands mentioned they all have some watches that have prices peeking above the $1000 price point.
OK. So I'm a mechanical watch nut but now you have me going to check out Apple watches. I don't subscribe to the idea that if you're into mechanical watches you need to invest in a crucifix for protection against evil in case you find yourself within a 50 yard radius of a smart watch. 😉
@JustBlueFish
Жыл бұрын
Check them out you might be surprised.
24:42 "(Apple watch) best tool watch", I disagree with this, but I think the reason you say this is because of different functions, I (and I believe many others)value more durability over functions in tool watches. Also apple watch is not grab n go watch, you have to recharge it. But yeah, these are all opinions.
The only thing Orient is missing is an everyday sports watch. Something like a dresskx, or SARB. You pair something like that with the Bambino and Kamasu, and thats a 3 watch collection that needs nothing else
Damn, I could say I put Timex S tier but Apple Watch! That is like putting the Swiss Army Knife as S tier of pocket knives. I have an Apple Watch and Apple Watch is like the Swiss Army knife of watches it does multiple tax, so Victorinox to make smart watches to do the same functions as their pocket knives. In a way I had a 10 dollar analog Casio watch and it turn out to be a dud after 5 years and my analog Timex Expedition keeps running and it does what they say it takes a licking and keeps on ticking; while the only dud from Timex I got is this Solar powered IronMan and in a way I had a bunch of Ironman watches and they stood the test of time.
I have an Apple Watch series 3 and it doesnt even work due to lack of software support. Apple doesnt care about the longevity of their products and would rather have you spend a few more hundred dollars.
I think Chrsitopher Ward is good but they lack in brand identity. I agree that a good portion of their designs are strongly inspired!
Knot , Minase, Fuge watces from Japan are wonderfull watches with incredible price and I suguess you what incredible wathc white price
Wolbrook, Farer, both have crazy cool watches I own many!!
I think you should educate yourself on Citizen before you make such a list - Citizen own Miyota, which is one of the worlds largest manufacurers of mechanical and automatic watch movements. They sell these movements to a lot of other watch brands, but also they are putting them to good use in some of their own watches, such as many of their Promaster Marine Dive watches, their NB1050/60 sports/dress watch line and other watches in their "Collection" line. True they make very much use of quartz and solar powered quartz watches (after all they were the first to make a high quality solar movement in their Eco-Drive movements), but to say that they don't have mechanical watches in their line up is just an uneducated statement. Sorry, I just had to get it out there ! 🙂
@JustBlueFish
Жыл бұрын
I didn’t say they don’t have any . I said I’ve never seen any I’ve only ever seen their quartz EccoDrive watches, which are incredibly common and popular (Promaster, Nighthawk, etc.). I never spoke in absolutes, please recognize the distinction before trying to insult me and insinuate I’m uneducated.
@peterbeck-rasmussen8514
Жыл бұрын
@@JustBlueFish I did not say (or intend to say) that you are uneducated - I was making the argument that you should educate yourself on the brands you were ranking, because your statement, which was clearly questioning whether Citizen made mechanical watches was uneducated in this perspective.
Interesting takes though I can’t agree with Timex being ranked as high as Seiko and Citizen. Many of Timex watches are junk including many of the newer models. I’ve purchased 6 watches over the past two years and returned 5. The one I kept (Flix reissues) actually was came with a broken indigo button. Replacement watch was sent and all is well with it. The others felt incredibly cheap including a Waterbury gmt, and all had QC issues. Misalignment, loose bezels, loose buttons, horrible straps, overly thick, and very tinny feeling.
I'd vote for Bulova precisionist base models (not the ugly higher end ones) for the A tier

Check out OTHER Japan makers especiallly microbands. Awsome for the price.
Your list is of some interest to me - because I have a Hamilton Khaki and a Bulova Aerojet (quartz) - happy with both. BTW, Bulova does have some real crap - but there are some real nice, clean designs in the haystack; you have to look (even scouring Chrono24 for discontinued models).

Good video. Not an easy one to make as much is subjective. I agree with Casio being one of the best bang-per buck watch maker. I have 9 gshocks. I love how light they are and also how rugged they are. Most are easy to swap batteries on the non-solar models. I have some of each. I also stopped buying Seiko watches a few years ago. To me, Casio is the ONLY brand i will buy, while I save for an Omega Aqua Terra 1st gen/ current Rolex Explorer 36mm... Honestly, (to me) everything else is pretty pointless. No need to waste money, when Casio gives such fun for so little cash. I speak from experience having sold a few Hamiltons and a seiko turtle. Save your money while you save for something really decent. Go Casio (Currently wear the w86 and G shock 5600e) P.s. obviously to many people, something like a Hamilton or a Seiko is a great watch for life. Nothing wrong with that at all, but I've owned a few Omegas and an IWC, and i think it's worth putting all the money you would have spent on dozens of average watches into something iconic. P.s.2 if i never had more than £1000 in my life to spend on a watch, it would be 100% Hamilton khaki mechanical field... greatest watch for that price
I loved the way you organized the video, but you need to do some digging before making comments that looks like you don’t know what you are talking about. Citizen makes a lot of mechanical watches, including some exported to the USA market.

I think Bremont got lost in the list here. The 37 solo is beautiful.
I do have Seiko sarb line (017, 033,035), they get more value overtime, they are like S Rank for me but other seiko's lines are trash. BTW never consider a smartwatch is a watch! They are junk, their value drops over time. Apple watch is a non-rank here.
1. I definitely feel you should have put SEIKO on the S list. No watch brand has the cult following SEIKO has, other than maybe Casio/ G-Shock. Orient is good but doesn't belong above SEIKO...hell, SEIKO owns them. 2. You are absolutely right about the Apple Watch. Apple figured out how to bridge the socio-economic divide. Everyone from celebrities to bus boys wear Apple Watches. For those that say it isn't a real watch, what did they say when G-Shock came out with its electronics, etc. It doesn't have a movement in it. I think you got all the rest in the right spots.

@@JustBlueFish Agree a 100%, got into real watches around 4 years ago and bought my first Seiko, was impressed and actually Im wearing right at this moment but bought another one which is more expensive and I was truly dissapointed, came kinda faulty out of the box, the looks do not match the price and now the date function broke; with that amount I could have bought a not so expensive Tissot or an Orient with a sapphire crystal. Good watches but I think they abuse the heritage to up the prices..
Deep Blue $100ish 44mm NATO diver, Islander $300ish.
Del Griffith agrees with you....."It's a Casio"
Seiko is a mid-range brand, moving to upper mid-range, definitely not an 'affordable' brand. Orient IS an affordable watch brand, though few of their watches appeal to me. Also, Orient watches feel cheap and not very well built. Citizen eco-drive quartz watches are great, but their automatic watches, certainly the better ones, are mostly Japan domestic market only. Casio is a 'love it or hate it' brand - I mostly hate them. I have never liked digital, even back in the 80s when these watches were all the rage. Also, Casio watches often feel plasticky and bargain basement. Hamilton is mid-range, definitely not bargain basement! Many of their watches exceed $1k in MSRP. But the quality is excellent and the watches usually very accurate, which is a surprise. Tissot are similar to Hamilton, but designs are often not great, Mido and Certina likewise. I don't think you can differentiate much between these three brands. Christopher Ward are definitely OK, but a lot of their designs are boring, and prices have been creeping up, so not really 'affordable'. Vostok is a junk brand, simple as that - I would put them in the Chinese multi-brand bracket. Surprised that Shinola isn't mentioned - sure they are fairly expensive, but I would put them in the 'C' bracket. Apple watches? NO WAY! I don't consider them as watches, not proper watches at least. Sorry, they DO NOT belong in ANY watch list. Apple watches are wrist computers - end of.
Citizen eco drive line is top quality
I think you are not giving citizen due credit, their sporty/dressy NB1060-12L is out of this world
Citizen are of course B. But they should reside ahead Seiko. I love my quartz Promaster. Oh, and I love my Seiko Turtle. Misaligned and I will have to regulate it one day. Eighteen seconds minus and 1.0 beat error. Will do it when my double domed sapphire crystal arrives. And my Tissot Seastar 1000 is D. Which is embarrassing. My worst dive watch. My Orient Bambino and my Orient Defender are cool. My Certina is way ahead of my Fossil. My Casios are great but quartz mostly. I like my G-Steel analog. Although it is very big and heavy. My Vostok Amphibia is a good watch but in terms of quality it is a D. 🕐⚙️🍸
My Fossil is 32 years and counting. Never serviced. How many watches can say that? As another viewer said, Fossil is underrated.

Garmin enters the chat...
No seiko? Casio and Seiko should be S
My Citizen's have treated me better than other people Hamilton's have treated them. They have superb mechanical watches but they do focus on Eco-Drive more. I agree with most of your list but Citizen should be higher. I think you are being hard on Timex as well... I know guys that have done tours with theirs and they are still working. If we are doing smart watches you should have put Garmin and Suunto on here as well.
I think Citizen should be A tier. Their Solar watches are amazing for the price, other brands are more expensive due to mechanical movements. Mechanical watches are just overhyped at this point. Solar is more convinient to use. Also I think Tissot is the best entry swiss brand so it should definitely be at the A tier.
The Seastar 1000 is "meh" but the Seastar 2000 is miind-blowing.
I used to buy every new Seiko, now saving for Tudor
Is Apple even a watch? Fossil on the same lines with bulova certina & mido, better than boctok? Is this guy insane? Sorry sir, but I had to speak this way, coming straight from my heart
I have a Garmin dive computer that’s also a watch-Garmin deserves a mention 😎! Spot on with the list.
Yes, the G-shock is awesome, but one model isn't enough to elevate an entire brand so Casio belongs in your A tier. Hamilton, Seiko, Mido, Christopher Ward, and Tissot definitely belong in the S tier. You penalized them for cost because you have misinterpreted their market tier. They are more expensive than other "affordable" tiers because they're really closer to bordering entry level luxury in terms of build and movement quality. They're not intended to compete with the likes of Timex, Citizen, and Bulova. They're a cut above. That's why their prices can reach into low 4 figures. I'm not going to even comment on you including the Apple watch in the discussion.
Seiko should be A. How do you have Fossil on the list and not have Invicta? I don't like either one but they ARE AFFORDABLE
@JustBlueFish

I have fossil and not invicta because I can't put everything on the list, or the video would be 3 hour long. Just because a brand isn't included, doesn't mean they don't belong on the list - I'm pretty sure I mentioned that. This isn't the 15 BEST brands, it's just 15 brands ranked. We could have ranked 100 brands given enough time.
