RAM 3500 cold start -17F Minnesota

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

RAM cold start -17F
Update 5/11/2020: Truck wasn't starting back in Jan/2019 due to bad diesel from a station in Alexandria MN that's now out of business. As of now truck has 299,500 miles and it running great. Not putting on as many miles recently as I've been remodeling our cabin instead of driving around buying campers/tractors/etc. Will post update video in a few days. Oh, subscribe now please.
fter being out for one night, not plugged in, with exhaust brake turned on to "auto"mode.
High idle kicks in right away as does the exhaust brake to get things warmed up quicker.
Routine for RAM in cold start = start, drive... once coolant temp hits 130F you'll see the windows defrost. Once you hit 170F or so you'll have a comfortable cabin temp.
Too many videos on cold start for RAM Cummins 6.7. They just start. I've started my truck at -42F by Finland, MN with no issues.
This is actual air temp not windchill which doesn't apply to trucks.

    Grizz 2 I’ve been to hot and humid climates. And It’s better than the cold. The cold in my city is so cold it hurts your face just to go outside. If at any point in time you don’t have proper clothing, you become hypothermic in 20 minutes or less. Winter’s can keep people indoors for weeks on end. It’s torturous and depressing

  • @gc99289

    @@KevAlberta True, but this past summer it sucked going outside here. 91-95 with humidity. It's like you're in a sauna constantly. It sucks and hard to get any work done. Granted, frigid cold is as bad or worse, but at least you can control the temperature with clothing. When it's hot, it's hot, you can't really make yourself cooler but to go inside the AC. Moderated climates are the best. Florida is great in the late fall and winter, but Spring and Summer, get out of Dodge.

    where are you located that you only had -17? I am an hour north of the twin cities and we had -40 on several neighbors thermometers and a -38 by another guy. my 15 had some gelling issue. I plug it in so starting is a non issue. talked to our fuel guy at east central diesel and he says they have a baldwin filter that has a little bigger micron rating then stock so its less sensitive to gelling. my 2003 would pop off at -20 without an issue at all.

    Do these newer trucks do 3-cylinder idle? The later ECM flash programs for the 1998-2002 24 valve trucks had that capability. It was noisy as hell, but it worked well to warm up an extremely cold engine.

  • @rhettdrake5725
    @rhettdrake5725 Жыл бұрын

    Now that is how a diesel engine in a truck should start no matter how cold it is. I had a 1998 12 valve Cummins and I never plugged it in the only thing I would do is cycle the glow plugs 2 time's and it would fire right up.

    Painful cold. I live in St. Louis where it will routinely get into single digits and teens or overnight lows in January and February and at least a couple days a year it will dip below zero but minus 17 is a once every 100 years event. That seems like a regular winter day in MN from what I have heard and read. Minus 22 in the record for StL set in 1884. I remember minus 15 in 1982. Coldest ever for Missouri was minus 40 in Warsaw in 1905. Enough mindless ramblings about winter weather. That diesel seemed to start as well as any gas engine and with well over 200K on the clock even more impressive.

  • @tedwardo123

    @tedwardo123

    5 жыл бұрын

    Performance might be a little better... MPG is about the same. My reason to delete was to stop choking my engine/turbo/grid-heater with carbon and get rid of the DPF. The 70,000 mile service for the 6.7 is $800 around here to clean the carbon. My DIY delete was about $1500 including my MM3 programmer so I made my money back quickly avoiding the carbon-cleaning-service and buying DEF fluid. **The dealer doesn't clean your grid heater when doing the 70K service, make sure they clean it as it'll get completely clogged eventually. Is it bad to start the engine with the engine break on ? Is it normal to have white smoke coming out in cold temperatures like that?

    Trucks at 352,000 miles as of now 9/2022... Engine brake is actually the turbo with turbo-vanes moving to put a load on the engine. It's auto so you don't turn this off or on. It's normal to have white smoke when cold...

    My Duramax needed some badly needed TLC. Money being an issue it was neglected, shame on me. It wouldn’t start even at zero. Did all the needed TLC and now it starts on the coldest days. A well maintained diesel will start on the coldest of days. Cummins although do start well in those subzero temps. As far as seat heaters, my diesel ones heat way faster than my Avalanche ones.

    If I ever own another diesel I will power up the block heater. Well worth it.
