Great, sensible advice. I just got into quail out of necessity (I'm moving back to the suburbs) but I'm thus far glad I did.

If you can’t get ahold of calcium you can keep the egg shells and grind those in a mortar and pestle and give them to the birds. Idk why this would even be brought up as an issue at all with any egg laying species. Eggshells have actually been proven to be one of the most digestible forms of calcium out there for human as well.

Good video. I take mine out of the cage leaving the door open and they go back in .

Love the video! Red Jungle fowl come from Southeast Asia, where they were already well adapted to hot jungles and cold mountains, which may be part of the reason they where chosen as farm fowl in all regions of the world. I'd love to keep quail, but I've got my hands full with work, career training, and chicken keeping. I'll keep watching your videos till I can carve out some time, though!

Hey there! Glad to see you're back up and running, as I believe you present real world solutions and considerations to real world problems and aspects of decision making! I enjoyed the tone of this video and am glad you've taken the time to present a reality based observation about some folks, I would argue, whose goal isn't so much as to educate as it is to meet some internal narcissistic need (we all have those to some degree or another, but educating people in an empirical manner so that they can succeed in any given endeavor should supercede any internals of our own). Subjectively speaking, I would like to ask you to take the time to do some post-production editing, for videos of course, so that you can adjust the white balance and contrast of your video, or move to a different background, because I was exceedingly distracted by the glaring white background, and your camera's white balance ability to compensate for the brightness of the lighting mixed with the background.....my eyeballs were nearly watering at how bright it was (I actually dimmed the brightness of my laptop screen to compensate). Content wise, SUPERB as usual.....thanks for the hard work, it is appreciated. Cheers from Central WY....

Thanks for the kind words and feedback. I've always prioritized good content and audio over good video, but I agree on this one. I was in a rush and it's tough to find good lighting in our house. This will solidify my decision for a good background and lighting for future videos. Thanks sincerely for the feedback.

@@UrbanAviary You're welcome.....yeah, I'm hip on the audio aspect......far too many folks won't take the time to choose a microphone that is pertinent to their specific audio needs; ie, trying to use the mic on a videocamera that is 8ft-10ft away, and the speaker ends up sounding like they are speaking from the back of a long tunnel! A simple lapel mic, less than $10 at Amazon for a cheapy just to practice at a channel startup (which is what I'll be doing, as it's been a few decades since I've done any serious recording), or a little better lapel mic can be had for about $25 at some brick and mortal stores. Far too many people who want to get into recording (whatever their specific intent; music, podcasts, KZread, etc.) think along much the same lines as way too many people who want to raise fowl of some sort (including quail as your videos often point out); unless they get 'high end' equipment, they can't get into 'x'. This is why I saved your earlier videos, back when you still lived in the city: the design of your home built cages was great (except for the tolerances on the Poop Trays....I hadn't considered the condensation issues from spilled water and watery poop, which of course, lead to expansion issues for the wood trays)!!!!! Simple, straight forward, NOT expensive, and the materials can actually be had for free from recycled wood. Anywho, thanks again and I do look forward to your new videos; and of course, I've jingled the little bells so I'll be notified! Take care....and yeah for you on the Scovies....I love them, as well as Anconas.....both are pretty good for Urban uses, as both breeds tend to be on the quieter side for their species.

Yeah I have lost more incubating than I have hatched, incubated like 3 batches now I have 11 birds out of 180 eggs incubated, done everything right, researched for months first, Im thinking its my incubators humidity it only gets to 65 when in lock down, way worse than I thought it would be..last batch going in tomorrow..

Are you buying hatching eggs or incubating your own birds eggs?

We just picked up 4 rabbits and 16 quail (3 trios of contrix and 7 Button babies). Definitely not as noisy as chickens and the Roos crow I find oddly adorable. I'm more worried about the breeding of them as that does seem to be a tad tricky as far as them brooding their own.

Coturnix certainly won't hatch their own eggs or take care of chicks. That motherly instinct had been bred out of them. Incubation is your only option unless you want to get a silkie chicken or other broody breed.

@@UrbanAviary we got them mainly for eggs and I'm going to try my hand at hatching in spring. Wish me luck on that one as a newbie 😉😂 Until then still a nice little bird to have around. Great channel and I know I appreciate the information. 👍

I started with quail and they definitely hit the top of the cage like little psychoes, One even has a wound on its head, but my cage is too high and will be upgrading to a "proper" quail cage soon.

Is it possible to keep just 1 or two as pets?

If you only have hens you can do a couple. I wouldn't do just one, they are social birds. I wouldn't even consider a rooster unless you have at least 3 hens to go with him.
