Quail vs Chickens

Having quail is a lot like having small chickens. The eggs and meat are fantastic and they are more productive than chickens. And they are great for small spaces and backyard farming.

    hello, I had a question and very important for me as I want to start layer quail farming in my country Bangladesh. is there any differences between broiler and layer quails in their early age (e.g. 21 days) seeing what I can distinguish them from each other? if you can answer this question it will be really helpful. TIA

    There's no difference in these birds, no bird is a specific egg layer or broiler. This is one of the biggest myths in the world of Quail. The Coturnix or "Japanese" Quail is the same bird no matter what color or derivative. Be it Brown, English White, Italian, Tibetan or any other variation. They are all equally proficient layers, I would just select the largest birds, which will produce the largest eggs. The color makes no difference. Do you mean you are looking for the difference between males and females? If so, it is difficult to tell definitively until about 3 weeks, much easier at 4-5 weeks. This is only possible with the Italian and Brown or "Pharaoh" varieties. Other color variations are impossible or nearly impossible to tell. You can email me pictures of your birds and I will do my best to help distinguish the gender for you. Hope this helps?

    Real interesting. We just bought our 1st coop and run primarily for chickens, but now considering qual as well. Sounds like the only additional item would be some protein additive for the food. Would the qual get on ok living with chicken?

    Possibly if raised together from chicks. Otherwise no, the chickens will kill them.

    @@UrbanAviary No - Quail do not have the resistance to many of the diseases chickens carry. You will loose your entire quail flock. You can possibly keep them if raised far above chickens and have no access to their feces, but sometimes dander and dried feces could blow into the aviary.

    I know you mentioned other quail species in you other videos however why do you prefer to raise cortutnix and not the Bobwhite which eggs are all white and more uniform compared to spotted corturnix quail eggs.

    Hi Jaren, Thanks so much for the video! I was wondering how big of a cage (square feet) do you recommend for 12 birds?

  • @UrbanAviary

    @UrbanAviary

    You are very welcome! Six square feet would be a good minimum. Anything bigger is a good bonus for them. I have about a dozen to a 2x3 cage right now and they are very happy birds. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Hi :) I keep 3 quails with little serama hen. I put a nesting box in for her and my quails are laying eggs in it as well. So yes, they do nest, although I still find an odd quail egg wherever ;)

    Anyone ever try gathering wild wheat and grains to feed their quail? I am in Oklahoma and there is a ton of it growing in the field behind my house. My first batch of quail are about a month old and I don't want to risk them getting sick or anything, but self sufficiency is a priority of mine.

    Since you enjoy busting myths for raising quails... Quails can be broody and will lay when put in a outside tractor range setting that has an enclosed hutch that rests on the ground. I have a video that shows the hutch I built where they did this. Thought you would be interested to know.

    +LILTRadio I had my quail in the Aviary over the summer and I had one out of about 200 birds that actually would lay on her eggs. But she wasn't consistent enough to hatch them herself. I have certainly seen it happened, and I would like to see if I could find a bird in my flock that does go broody an attempt to pass on those genes. It certainly does happen but it is not very common.

    Maybe it is a concept of flock mentality. Maybe they are just following the herd or some of the other girls are like...."what are you doing?" lolz I do not have nearly as many birds as you do kept together though. So again, maybe the larger flock is the influence.

  • @UrbanAviary

    +LILTRadio that's a valid observation. It might be worth trying to look for those traits and isolate that bird in a more remote environment in an attempt to encourage that behavior.
