Here I talk about some of the benefits of raising Coturnix Quail. As meat and egg production birds for urban homesteading, as pets and as important tools to teach children important life lessons.

    Quails make good pets, plus their is a return for your investment which isn't the case with the majority of other animals that are used as pets.. it just makes sense!

    They do make great pets! They’re actually very smart and sweet. I use to have one as a pet and she would always come running over to me and jump up into my arms to be held and pet. Her eggs were fantastic too haha.

    Do you have some good recipes for quail? My quail are over eight weeks old now ( Bobwhite ) so it's about time for some of them to hit the grill.

    I would start by looking for anyone in your area that is involved in falconry. If you can find someone in your area that is involved in raising and training raptors, they will usually know somebody that raises quail. if not, they will be able to direct you to someone that does know. You can also contact the zoo and ask to speak to whoever is in charge of ordering food for their raptors. Sometimes they have quail shipped in Frozen, but if they can get it locally they often do. I would check Facebook and any other resources you can think of to try and find falconers in your area as a first step though.

    Hi, would you be able to talk about grit use for quail?

  • @UrbanAviary

    @UrbanAviary

    7 жыл бұрын

    If they're eating a mash then it's not necessary. Grit is for birds eating while seeds and other things that require grinding before digestion. Most feeds are already ground up so it's not necessary

    Hello Jaren, I just came upon your channel by luck in a search, I love quail especially the Bobwhite I am disappointed with their slow growth and maturity rate as you mentioned. I currently have various breeds of chickens I wanted to raise for profit but they are they same situation. I've considered the coturnix before but wasn't sure if they provided as much meat per bird as the bobwhite. This was an excellent video! Congrats to you sir on such a fine job. I gave a thumbs up and have subscribed. And now going to watch some more of your videos. I am seriously wanting to get going on this so if I run into a snag or something I hope you don't mind me shooting you an email.thank you very much. Martin Ratliff in Central Fl.

  • @UrbanAviary

    Never had bobwhite, but I imagine it's similar. Bobwhites eat a different diet so they might be "gamier" tasting, but I don't see that as a downside.

    Hey you mentioned that if the town states that you can't have poultry that you probly couldn't do quail but quail aren't considerd as poultry there a game bird so as long as it doesn't say anything about game birds your good that's why in most states like mine you need a game bird propagation license to sell Quail or quail eggs

  • @UrbanAviary

    @UrbanAviary

    True, it all depends on how your state classifies them. My state doesn't classify them as game birds OR poultry.

    Why do quail and chickens lay eggs 3-7x a week whereas other birds only lay half a dozen eggs in the spring?

  • @UrbanAviary

    @UrbanAviary

    7 жыл бұрын

    I believe it's just selective breeding for such a long period of time. Birds that lay that often were specifically bred to be egg production birds.

  • @cloakanddagger1

    quail and chickens off-spring do not need to be feed every three hours by their parents for several weeks. Once born they get on their feet and start walking around after 30 minutes and eat and drink by themselves. I have both quail and budgies and the budgies lay 6 eggs where the quail laid about 24 eggs It is tiring for the parent budgies and they really need a 2 month rest after raising their young to recover by removing their breeding boxes after breeding / raising their young.
