One of my favorite compositions of all time. Matsuev is unbelievable! Splendid, powerful and energetic and perfect to play Rachmaninoff. I have never before heard of Denis Matsuev. What a miraculous performer, interpreter! I am stunned beyond. Thank you for your commitment to accomplish this mastery.

I can think of only a handful of KZread videos I wish I could like more than once. This is one of them. By far the best interpretation of Rachmaninov´s Rhapsody.

The 18th variation is one of the finest, most beautiful melodies ever created.

Rachmaninoff played his last performance in my hometown and we have a statue of him in Knoxville This piece has been like a sentimental blueprint for me as I’ve sketched my own 1000 measures of variations Rach shows you how you can go about variation and development and orchestration while still being faithful to the source material He seemingly used that playful challenge to create a great work of art that illuminates as much about him as it can about us You can render a single melody in countless ways, from endless perspectives

A very intense, dedicated performance of this wonderful piece by Denis Matsuev. Much darker in tone than Stephen Hough’s version with the BBC Proms, he really gets into the depths of the piece and explores the various colors of the variations without hesitation. A fascinating and compelling performance, ably and very skillfully accompanied by Leonard Slatkin, who is a marvelous collaborator.

Yes, i have heard Stephen Hough's version live in Adelaide last year. Quite good, but this version by Denis Matsuev is awesome. A delight to listen to.

Matsuev plays these variations more crisply and boldly than most pianists. It is very effective in being able to hear the piano part through all the orchestral parts. Beautifully and masterfully done. Slatkin is a wonderful conductor and the Russian State Orchestra is top notch! Matsuev's interpretation of the more meditative Etude Tableau in the encore is also sublime.

Yes, our species reaches the heights of interstellar space but also plumbs the depths of depravity. It's early Fall 2020. Yesterday I watched the debate of the Great Nacissist Imposter vs. the Democrat's third string candidate who was acceptable to the people who are supporters of the former. I'm happy you have hope, I'm in California breathing in and seeing the smoke from conflagrations hundreds of miles away. I'd grad the human species D-, needs serious improvement, but this piano player, HA! none! Such a delight.

Rhapsody is my favorite piano piece of all time. Every time I listen to it with my eyes closed I am amazed of the images that flow through my mind with the music (I advise doing that, by the way). He may have lived and composed a good deal of his life in America, but his soul is pure Russian. Bravo, Denis Matsuev on a brilliant performance. Bravo.

Денис часто выбирает для исполнения произведения,созвучные его характеру-глубокие,динамичные,насыщенные эмоциями,стремительные и сильные.Интересное понимание и прочтение Рахманиновым Паганини-скорбное,глубокое,иногда безвыходное,драматичное-чисто русское!!!У Паганини все же легкость,воздушность ,надежда и прозрачность-все эмоции читаемы и снаружи;как у итальянцев почти всегда.Интересно все-таки,как местность,история и национальный характер влияет на написание и даже прочтение музыки.Здорово,что всеми своими способностями можешь прославлять нашего Создателя!!!

I imagine that you Mr. Jason must've had diaphanous merriment observing Denis Matsuev's unfanciful work. This debonaring maestro in my own view stands in a class by himself. To exercise something as seigniorial as rachminoff is purely an understatement. Suppose the legs supporting that steinway would've broken down once he commenced playing had busrt into flames !!!

I add my agreement with the other replies - I can't seem to get enough of this piece or of the pianist, Matsuev!!!! It amazes me every time I see it and watch him play it, along with the marvelous orchestra as well!!!! One of the all-time performances - I wish that Rachmaninoff could see him play it!!!! I think he would stand and applaud it as well.

That’s it!!! You just made my day!!! For years I’ve been trying to recollect who Matsuev reminds me so much of! Also, as an aside, I think it was Sam (Samwise Gamgee). Frodo was played by Elijah Wood.

Absolutely amazing interpretation! So incredibly moving. And I don’t believe there is a better melding of orchestra and piano for this masterpiece than this performance. And the Etude-Tableau Op 39 No 2 in a minor encore is incomparably beautiful.

Rachmaninoff Etudes Tableaux Op. 39 no.2

I am so angry at the Piano Festival in Brescia which excluded Matsuev on orders from Kiev. And I published this great rendition as a protest. Music should unite people from all over the world, not divide them!

Great balance with the piano...

I love this version, and the passion and verve that Matsuev plays with. I like that he's bored with some parts and moved by other parts and exhultant on other parts. I'd rather listen to Matsuev challange himself and end up with a few errors than other pianists who play with technical precision perfectly but leave me cold.

I know nothing about this great piece of rhapsody, but we are human , its more real to play with a few wrong notes in contrast to such an impeccable piece of music. Its another form of paying respect to the creator.
