“You only feel the one yearning at best,
Oh, never seek to know the other!
Two souls, alas, exist in my breast,
One separated from another:
One, with its crude love of life, just
Clings to the world, tenaciously, grips tight,
The other soars powerfully above the dust,
Into the far ancestral height.
Oh, let the spirits of the air,
Between the heavens and Earth, weaving,
Descend through the golden atmosphere,
And lead me on to new and varied being!
Yes, if a magic cloak were mine, that
Would carry me off to foreign lands,
Not for the costliest garment in my hands,
For the mantle of a king, would I resign it!"
Goethe, Faust - Part I, Outside of the City Gate, translated by A. S. Kline

I cannot count the times I have witnessed live performances of this workhorse of the piano-and-orchestra repertoire. But I have never heard it performed with so much vibrance as in this recording by the Orchestre de Paris and soloist Nikolai Lugansky. The music seems to transport itself from the screen directly into the soul. To me, Lugansky is this generation's monarch of Rachmaninoff interpreters, and I doubt anyone can match him. He possesses a maturity in his playing to which others only aspire. Something that always impresses me about his playing is the total lack of annoying mannerisms that detract from the music. This is a superb recording of this music, perhaps even the definitive one on KZread. Applause to the recording engineer and the orchestra.

After falling in love with Rachmaninoff, I have a feeling I will never be able to listen to any other composer! And Lugansky is simply the best! No one can compete with these two!❤❤❤

Some times I wish Rachmaninoff had expanded Variation 18 into a much longer piece. When it starts, I wish it never ends. Longing, yearning, happiness, sadness, gentleness, etc. all rolled into a single theme. Three minute is just too short to unroll all those feelings.

Perfect chemistry between conductor, orchestra and soloist. Though I have listened to Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini over a hundred times--even played by Lugansky himelf--I was in awe of this performance as if I heard it for the first time.

Couldn't disagree more. Then no-one could perform Albéniz like Spaniards, Beethoven like Germans, Mozart like Austrians, Debussy like French.... sorry, NO. That said, I very much admire Luganski and his performances of Rachmaninov, but also performances by many other non-Russians pianists.

Nickolai was wearing a bandaid on the tip of his left middle finger. Despite that, he played with full force on all forte passages. This is why I worry about established concert artists playing when they should not. Or playing works (like a Bartok Piano Concerto) that is dangerous to play and musically worthless.
