There is also a link to a video about it. I'll see if I can find it on here, but it may take some time. ((0-0))

That's right. I've always thought that the 18th variation is the perfect example of how you can appreciate music on different levels. On the one hand, you can simply marvel and be moved by its poignant beauty. But then you discover the intellectual feat of taking a kernel of the Paganini theme and literally turning it upside down to get something totally different. And that only adds to your appreciation and awe.

Think what lessons children sitting homeless and parentless in the streets of bombed out Syrian towns will be learning before they are ten years old. This stunning performance of the Rachmaninoff Paganini Variations by the phenomenally gifted sixteen year old pianist Alexander Malofeev reminds me of the composer's own approach to the instrument, yet the interpretation is very much Mr. Malofeev's own. He possesses the true gift of cantilena, perhaps the most essential quality for any artist. It is almost nonexistent today. Even at his young age he inhabits the music. I don’t believe I have ever heard Variation XVIII better played than Mr. Malofeev did at this performance. And he was at this time only 16 years old. It want be long before he will equal and/or overtake Evgeny Kissin, the most prominent Russian pianist now living. When I heard his interpretation of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto #2 or 3 (sorry I can’t recall which one it was) at the tender age of 15, not only was I completely blown away, I was when hearing it again thinking he will be the next Horowitz as long as he continues to work hard. Like Horowitz, Alexander is extremely modest and unassuming. No Lang Lang here. As to his performance, Mr. Malofeev’s hands are truly magical. I don’t know whether or not the Steinway is his piano or that of the Auditorium RAI Arturo Toscanini in Torino (Turin). When he plays he becomes one with the piano. By his facial expressions one can see this trait when he plays with closed eyes. It’s not really confidence that he’s portraying although that is easy to misinterpret as such. His closed eyes are showing us he is truly ONE with the piano. It is as if his musical soul is inside the piano sitting between the sound board and the plate plucking the strings. As his human figure touches the keys, they are also magical. He plucks each key with the softest touch or with a mighty force, both as the needs dictate. He never misses a note. In fact, HE is a mighty force. Finally, he always thinks of his conductor at the podium as an equal and always gives thanks to the concertmaster for his or her performance and for the control of the orchestra. It may be a stretch, but I truly believe his talent will take him to the top of his peers (if one can be ‘atop’ one’s peers). Thani you Mr. Malofeev for bringing your revelers another exciting performance. I have two recordings of this Rachmaninoff piece and your performance will absolutely make the others grow pale in comparison. BRAVO young man. Never stop studying. Never stop practicing. Never stop remembering who you are and, more importantly, who you want to be-and never grow tired of reaching that goal. Never stop remembering your past for it will guide you to your future desires. Never ever stop your humility and humbleness. A change in any one of these can cause bumps in your road to the future OR destroy your future completely. The only way to prevent this from happening is to keep deeply focused. I know you are now focused and I believe you wish to do so forever. However, to remain focused you have to remain focused with a little time for rest and relaxation. Again and finally-BRAVO!!

Alexander's playing scintillates - sometimes glittering, twinkling, flashing, shimmering, dazzling; and then, before you know it, you are being hunted through a dark threatening forest, or viewing a panoramic sunset having scaled a mountain in the Urals, or dancing a Cossack dance, or lying back in a deck chair and reflecting on the meaning of life, or falling in love, or having a jolly time with friends. I know this is Rachmaninoff's magic, but it is yours as well, Alexander - you transport us into his wonderful world. Thank you.

I know nothing of classical music so can't really comment on the technical side. I just know what I like watching and listening to. Ever since I came across Alexander I watch as much as I can. It is difficult for me to understand how anybody can play so brilliantly, let alone somebody of his age. I look forward to seeing lots more of Alexander and hope we may see him in the UK soon

I recommend that individuals who have never heard this brilliant piece before in their lives have the opportunity to listen to this as their first exposure. For me it was like hearing it for the first time, though the variations have haunted me in my waking moments for a lifetime. There are no words adequate to explain the love affairs in play here: the romance between the orchestra and soloist, the rapt attention of the orchestra and soloist to the conductor, and the adroit lovemaking which the soloist performs on the keyboard. Bravo as always, Alexander, thank you for enriching our lives!

Alexander’s interview could help us to understand why he could make such brilliant performance at the young age 16. JCH: For your performance with the RT State Orchestra you have chosen a Rhapsody on the theme of Paganini by Rachmaninov. How do you see the solution of the conflict in this work? Who is the winner - light or darkness? AM: The clash of two irreconcilable elements, light and darkness, divine and earthly, does not mean the resolution of the conflict by somebody’s victory. All this is a discussion about the essence of being, about life and death. Deep psychologism threaded through all the work of Rachmaninov, and Rhapsody isn`t an exception.

Wow what an answer to this question! I always thought about this Rhapsody as mere variations, some more serious, some more joyful. The dies irae always kept me serious. Of course the interplay between the variations the changes are a great way to keep you tuned. Maybe also I got fooled by the wonderful small smile of Sacha at the very las note: like a school boy, doing what they call in French espièglerie. What a comment, Sacha, and so you play every piece you play

Three years ago I wrote the comment shown below (I am also nogatram1). Since then, I have listened this work performed by many wonderful pianists, past and present. Yet I have to confess that, in my view, not one of them has come close to this. Given that it flowed from the hands of a 16 year old boy, this performance is little short of miraculous. Every variation comes alive with its own life, yet the music has a cohesion and wholeness that is truly remarkable. The interplay between piano and orchestra under the baton of Myung-Whun Chung is of a richness that I have yet to hear equaled. I would wholeheartedly endorse the comment by richardpodnar5039 below that this should be newcomers' first exposure to this work. They will not be disappointed!

What I think I like best about this performance is the pianist's avoidance of too much legato -- his approach makes for a much edgier performance, which reinvigorates this old warhorse of a piece. He almost makes it seem like we're hearing the piece for the first time. And that's refreshing.
