    Riding since 1956 with some racing and track days. Bought a MT09 and it may be the most rounded out bike I have ever ridden. It willingly does anything you ask it to do. Fast, slow and cruise. Long live the MT09.

I managed to survive 2 combat tours in Vietnam and campaigned a XR 750 flat tracker for 4 seasons. I am not as tough as I once was but am fortunate enough health wise to still ride. Loving my 21 Mt09. Bike is a blast all around. Non SP model and it handles like a champ. Really didn’t need the suspension upgrade at the moment for shredding backroads and commuting on the east coast. In the spring I’ll run it a handful of times at the track just because and see how it does. Just finally broke 1,000 miles and got to open her up. I am not disappointed. 🙌🏼

    OC: I figure anything modern with an upright seating position and medium-high/high seat is going to be good in the city. Your visibility is automatically better than a supersport or cruiser and other drivers will more like see your helmet above the car roof line ahead of you.

  • @Skipshift
    @Skipshift2 жыл бұрын

    OC. I think the rider position plays a lot into city riding. Being upright and in a more natural and noticeable position has got to help. Not only your visibilty as a rider, but the ability for car drivers to notice you at more of an upright window or roof line height. I ride my gsxr everywhere and by far in traffic is my least favorite. Like you said, the shoulder checks and looking over your shoulder in that supersport position are not really comfortable. Keep up the good work guys!

My Street Triple was so addictive that I wouldn't put it up without hitting triple digits. It was a blast but it wasn't near as comfortable as the MT07 is and I just don't need all that performance to be happy. I have a 2016 FZ-09. I had the same shifting feeling. 1st & 2nd gear is short, ith a lot of power. The fix was switching the front gear, adding one tooth. That calmed this down a little and can still wheelie if I want. Also, sometimes I shift 1 to 3, or start at 2. I skip gears sometimes, every other gear, when on more open roads and just on a casual cruise.

    I’ve been thinking about buying a bike for about 7 years now, and I think I’m ready to pull the trigger on it. Would you recommend the MT-09 and riding in mode 4 for a bit? Or would you recommend I go for the MT-07? I’ve been riding dirt bikes for most my life, so I think I’m pretty good on two wheels, though I know street will be a whole different thing of its own.

    @@clipdev I’m honestly leaning towards MT-07. 1.) because I’m a noob to street bikes 2.) cheaper 3.) seems more “maneuverable.” But, I’ve watched a couple highway reviews of the MT-07 and most of them say if you’re going to spend most of your time on a highway, you may want to go MT-09. Personally, commuting to and from work and what not is probably 80% highway, 20% streets. Also, my buddies do rides up to northern AZ often and they all have bigger bikes and say the same, that when on freeways or country roads, it’s nice to have the extra power, especially when AZ is hot as hell and you don’t want your bike being in high RPM for a long time. That was a bit of a rant, and you didn’t sign up for answering my questions. So don’t feel the need to read all that or respond if you don’t want to. Stay safe man!

  • @clipdev

    @clipdev

    @@MrMcReeties for regular highway use I think some wind protection would be very useful, as you find it on a Tracer. The MT09 is super comfortable and flickable(more then a 600cc inline 4) and already quite a beast, if you open the throttle, imho. For me it’s a bike where I have to accelerate consciously, not just full throttle and see what happens. It can be pretty wild. and I’m having it for almost 3 years and >20k km. On the other hand, these 900cc bikes are actually a sweet spot in long terms, never really too much and never too little power. It is definitely manageable if one uses his brain. But do you plan in long terms with your first street bike? I also like the playfulness of a 600cc bike, it helped me growing into street bike riding. And personally I was considering to downgrade again a couple of times, because they’re fun. Would be perfect to have 3 bikes actually. And for a beginner I would recommend 500-700cc.

    @@clipdev I would prefer a long term bike, I’ve gone through selling and buying many dirt bikes. And at this point, I kinda just wanna get one street bike and chill with it for quite awhile. I’ve rode a few bikes my friends have (GSXR750, and KTM Duke 890) and I much preferred the Dukes riding position. Hence the reason I’m lookin at the MT series bikes. I think I’m leaning towards the MT-07 then at this point, I don’t want to kill myself on an 09. I would rather go 09 for the quick shift, more power, and I could just chill on mode 4 for awhile. People say that mode 4 basically takes it down to that of the 07. But maybe the lighter smaller 07 would be a bit easier to learn on. Also, it seems basically impossible to find a 2022 MT-09 anywhere near me, even in neighboring states. So the 07 seems more acquirable as well. So all signs kind of show to go 07, then if I want to upgrade, I’ll wait a year or so and go 09 when they’re more available as well. Edit: about the wind stuff, I’d probably grab the sport windshield. I know it probably only helps like 30% but my commute to work is only about 20 min or so, so I don’t think I’d get too fatigued. Also coming from a dirt bike, especially in the dunes, I’m kinda used to the wind tossing me around and what not. I just vastly prefer the riding position, look, and basically everything of the MT bikes

    My take on high spec bikes being bad in the city hinges on 2 main attributes: 1) Body position ~ the more weight on the wrists the poorer the city friendliness, 2) The peakier the powerband/gutless low & midrange the more unpleasant for urban duty.

Same with big touring/crusing bikes. Again, they can do it, but you might find yourself getting annoyed trying to navigate tight city streets. If you're going to ride in the city almost exclusively, then I think a 300-700cc naked or neo retro bike would be best.

Only con for the city might be the heat in some states and the wider handlebars make it harder to filter through traffic in areas with straighter lanes. OC. I'm selling my 2018 BMW R1200 GS and am now seriously thinking of putting my name on a list of people waiting to get an MT-09 SP. I was considering the Triumph Street Triple RS, but it's way more expensive. Do you think it is worth the extra cost? Not a real fan of the instrumentation on the MT-09, wish it looked more like the R1. Do you find it hard to see in the day time?

    My BIGGEST complaint with my Ninja 400 is I CANNOT for the life of me ever find neutral until stopped. I know they design it that way. But damn is it frustrating when I wanna just coast in neutral. I know people say "leave it in gear in case you need to rip on the throttle and outrun a velociraptor that dropped from the sky" but really, when do you need to get up and go so quick? I LOVE the MT-07 transmission. You can feel each gear and neutral is easy. I'm glad Chase mentions this because my Ninja is getting very annoying doing te left foot right foot hokey pokey dance to stop and then hit neutral.

    Help? I'm about to do my first track day in my 2023 MT-09-SP and I'm trying to figure out if I can scroll back through all of the lap times that I might log in a 10 lap session , before shutting down the bike , or if I have to take note of those times while I'm riding and before I log the next one. The owners manual does not go into detail and I can't seem to figure out how to scroll back through times but rather can only see the prior lap while on the current lap. This will be distracting while riding if I want to know what my actual times are. Surely there must be a temporary memory of all of the the laps in a session? Help?

    OC: Aren’t naked bikes made for low/mid range cornering (carving). Which automatically makes them good city bikes. I ride a Z800. Heavy bike (230ish kg), and I still have fun in the city and traffic. All the low end torque comes out to play. You don’t even need to ring it out that hard.

    OC: I really wish the mt07 had the 4 rider modes that the 9 has. I had many years off from riding so for me the mt09 is a hard no. But if the mt07 had the modes I might get one. Instead I plan on getting the mt03. Just seems odd to me with Yamaha having such a big gap in displacement between that mt03 and the mt07 that they didn’t put the rider modes on the 7. I think that would have allowed a lot more returning riders like me to start back comfortably on the 7.

Fuel economy is great for the engine size (comparable to my previous MT03). The torque is great to pull you out of sticky situations. Only thing lacking was the mediocre suspension and lack of quickshifter.

    Having made a number of months with a 2022 standard MT09 under most conditions I can think of. Made 24 laps on a 890R on a very good friend’s bike. My thoughts are both bikes are as much fun as you can have with your clothes on. My friend is happy with his 890R but has had a few small problems with it. All were covered by warranty so far. Oil leak, coolant leak and a clutch replacement in the first 3100 miles. I found it a sweet ride but found engine sound and some vibration objectionable. My MT09 and five others I know well have been trouble free to this point. Two 2021 models, two 2022 models and one 2022 SP model. Mileages range from 2,100 to 8,900 and most have been on the track at least once. From this knowledge and price plus dealer network for KTM, I would go with the MT09 and did. I feel some will go with the KTM because it seems more exotic or upscale than a simple old Yamaha. I loved both on the track and the lap numbers put them in a situation where the rider is the only difference. The MT09 has another advantage in that the aftermarket really has anything you can name for the MT09. It is not nearly as good for the KTM at this time.

    OC: I'd imagine a R6 would be terrible for city riding, because the power comes in at the upper end of the RPM range. A bigger bike can get away with having a lower RPM range. As they say: There is no replacement for displacement. I ordered a 2021 MT-09 SP August 3rd 2021, I was told that they had some on back order, and that they'd call me when it comes in. I called back August 4th 2022 - A YEAR LATER, they called their Yamaha rep, was told it would ship in 3 days and take up to 11 to get here. Well, what showed up was a 2022. The bike is $100 more, 'destination' charge was $45 more, and then they tacked on an additional $375 'Freight' charge....so, me not harassing them week after week, cost me $520. I've recently got my license, got it insured today...and am going to pick it up either today or tomorrow. Most expensive toy ever!
