It was interesting that the mother was still looking for the 3rd baby. You've talked before about how they always do that final check since they can't count, so it was good to see that she knew she was missing one and came back for it.

Ahh so they cannot count? I’ve always been curious what happened in the mind of the mother raccoon of the 4 babies under our back patio, two of them died. One hit by a car and the other died in a dumpster to heat exhaustion, we saved the third one and the 4th is still chilling. One died under the patio though near them so always been curious what may have been going through their head when they found him down there cuz they moved back in once we removed that guys body.

Yes! Raccoon mothers have a remarkable instinct when it comes to their young. They often conduct that final check to ensure all their little ones are safe and accounted for. In this case, it's very likely that the mother heard the cries of her missing baby from inside the attic. Raccoons' acute hearing would have allowed her to pick up on those sounds when she returned to check the box. The homeowners' confirmation of hearing the baby raccoon inside all night aligns perfectly with the mother's instincts, assuring her that one of her babies needed her attention. It's a beautiful testament to the care and bond between raccoon mothers and her young.

Hi Gates Wildlife - I’m not sure you will ever see this, but I wrote a comment of congratulations on the recognition by Toronto Star under this video. I stated just how much I appreciated the wonderful work you do and how in awe I was of the young woman (you told me her name was Cassandra) how brave but also, polite, intelligent and well spoken she was and gave huge respect to her parents for raising such a beautiful daughter and thought perhaps the gentleman with her was her Dad ( you confirmed that was indeed her Dad and his name was Brad) I can’t even remember what all I said, but I know I must have told you folks just how much I honestly respect the wonderful work you tirelessly do to relieve minds of home owners, while also going beyond to protect and safely reunite Mama’s with their young and release them safely back to nature. Totally unexpected by me, you folks gave me the most wonderful, thoughtful and kind reply and being such a fan of yours, I truly treasured your response. Sadly, I see my comment and your reply has been removed. I am not sure what happened, but I still always remember your kind response and will always be a huge fan of the work you do and be fans of that amazing father and daughter that are highlighted in your videos. Hope you all have a great day and keep safe out there rescuing our furry and feathered friends. 💕

We had a mama and 4 baby raccoons last summer. She was keeping them under our boat in our backyard in a smaller Roughneck (a type of Rubbermaid plastic box) we must have left out there over the winter. It looked very cozy and protected from other wildlife. They were at the stage where they were crawling around a bit and we saw them in the backyard, exploring. We kept putting them back in the box because we were worried about eagles or some other large bird getting them but they just kept exploring. Hopefully she brought them somewhere else more discrete because we only saw them for two days. They were the cutest little things I’d ever seen and I wanted to cuddle them so badly but boy oh boy, were they ever not cool with that idea, lol. They sounded really ticked off whenever we got near. My husband moved them with thick gloves on. They’re adorable as babies but raccoons can be such menaces when they become adults. If you don’t have raccoons where you live, yes they’re cute but they are so clever it’s hard to keep them from getting into garbage and compost. Their hands can turn knobs and latches and their brains can work out pretty complicated stuff. So glad to see that Gates Animal Control thinks of both babies and the mama and ensures they are all relocated safely and humanely. Keep up the great work!!!

Great job Gates, and I am glad the mother came back for her final baby, she knew she was missing one, so it appears raccoons can count, well at least up to three. 😀

According to Gates’ reply to someone else’s comment, it wasn’t necessarily that the mother can count, but the homeowner said that they could hear the final baby crying all night so when the mother came back over night to get her babies, her acute hearing allowed her to hear what the homeowner heard which was her final baby crying and so she knew that there was another baby still in the attic. It wasn’t because she counted two and knew there was one missing. She would have come back for a final check regardless and had she not heard the final baby crying in the attic, she and the two babies she was able to recover from the baby box on the roof would have been on their merry ways.

As much as I love this video, can I ask all of you good people a question? Is realeasing and relocating your animals really the best thing? Are you sure they would be OK after this whole operation? I'm sorry to break it to you, but animals after being realeased from operations like this are BARELY succesful in the wild. As much as it pains me to say this, but I'm sure the only way to take care of this.... is dispatching them. I'm sorry for ruining everyones day in the comment section. Sorry

Ah, you didn’t ruin anyone’s day, my friend! Raccoons have multiple den site alternatives as do fox. It’s clear no one is trying to make them pets. However, they can make a horrific and expensive mess in your home/car/storage barn etc. They sure are stinkin’ cute-until it’s your place they’re destroying! Enjoy your day, best wishes.

Thanks for the kind words, but some state officials said the only way to deal with this was to stricttly kill the raccoons instead of relocating them. Because relocated animals acutrally don't do well in the process@@tundrawomansays694
