Racal PRM-4700A military transceiver

Today we try the Racal PRM4700A VHF transceiver.
It is a very compact radio yet effective. The frequency Range is from 30MHz to 88MHz FM (F3E) or Data (FID). It has a power output up to 4W. It has 9 programmable channels that that support separate TX/RX split & 1 VFO type All channels are front panel programmable. Channel Spacing is25KHz.
It will run at 10V so be careful not to connect it to a 13.8 or 24V power supply. I am looking for some ancillaries, so if you know a source for a battery, a whip or even a pouch, please drop me a line.
I added some reverse polarity and in overvoltage protection using a common diode (3AMP) and a TVS bipolar diode rated at 12V placing it in pararell with the power line. Remember that the power cord must have a fuse on the positive side.

But because this is a military radio, can it withstand high level of vibrations ?

It is built to withstand shocks and bumps yeah. Think about having this radio on a vehicle stand 👍

I have never heard of anyone grounding a quartz crystal. They are not semiconductor devices and do not suffer from ESD. Indeed, not all semiconductor devices suffer, just those that contain FET transistors.

I have seen many ham radios with all the quartz crystals soldered with a thin wire on top and then to ground. That is why

@@Radiogenes If a manufacturer of a product hasn't put a ground wire to the crystal then why change the design of the product? The product performs adequately well without that ground wire. It must do, it's being used by the military in harsh conditions. Leave the design of the product as it is. If a manufacturer has put a ground wire on to it, again, leave it. If you remove it, replace it. You don't know what problem is being addressed by the ground wire. You also don't know the circuit design around the crystal is. Take your lead from the manufacturer of the radio.

Any Idea where to get a replacement Memory battery?

I couldn’t find any. I think I would use a 3V coin cell with some diodes to drop the voltage until 2V or so 73!!!
