    The piece of garbage human who bought my late father's home cut down a fifty year old, perfectly formed Pin Oak, as well as fifty year old Red Cedar trees. I will never be civil to him. Bonus points, though, his fiance dumped him for this because the trees were a huge attraction of the property for her.

    An old story told by my grandma. So, it was somewhere in the 1960s in today's Kazakhstan, a soviet republic back then. If you don't know, most of Kazakhstan is basically a steppe/desert, the soils are poor - which will be important later - and trees are precious. Well, a guy wanted to build a workshop in line with other workshops, but there were two quite weak trees growing right at the spot. He went to the local arborist and asked for a permission to cut the trees down. The arborist said, that in a desert cutting trees is a no-no, but if the the trees suddenly die of... natural causes, then there'll be no choice but to dispose of them. The guy has heard what he was meant to. The city is built around a copper processing plant, and it was no big deal for him to get hold of two cans of sulfur acid. He chooses a dark night and pours the thing directly under the trees. Some time passes and... lo and behold! The trees that were barely showing any signs of life suddenly - to everyone's surprise - become green and fluffy and start growing. Apparently, the soils were so bad that sulfur acid somehow acted as a fertilizer (maybe by neutralizing the alkalies, idk, I'm no geologist) . The guy had to build his workshop elsewhere.

  • @shuboy05

    @shuboy05

    The acid must have changed the PH of the soil. Soil PH is very important since plant roots need a particular PH range in order to grow.

    True story; back in the 80's a guy I worked with bought a small farm at auction that was mostly pasture land so it was fairly cheap. He started planting 10 acres /year in black walnut which in 82 was estimated at around $30k per tree in veneer logs. Now its 37 years later and he is ready to retire and those trees are about ready to start coming down.

    I had something similar to this happen, my husband and I had a small yard with a single smallish tree on it, we also had "no trespassing" signs up (because kids kept asking if they could climb it since it was the only tree in the small neighborhood). one day my husband and I went to see a movie and when we got back there was a broken branch and a couple angry parents claiming they were going to sue us because their daughter fell out of the tree and broke her arm when the branch she grabbed broke off. long story short, their lawsuit was thrown out, but my husband and I counter sued and won, because of the type and age of the tree, and the size of the branch that broke we got $50, and another $150 for trespassing and destruction of personal property. unrelated: those people also went to jail and had their daughter taken away a few months later for 2 reasons, 1. they were drug addicts and 2. they let their "old friend" who was a registered child molester move in with them and their 6 year old daughter. so they were all around bad people anyway.

    I literally cried at the story of the dude who lost part of the fence line and the rest of his trees. For a few years, I did tree removal but the company I worked for had an arborist on staff and during every estimate the arborist would assess the value of the trees we were being asked to remove, as well as whether or not they could *ever* be replaced because in most cases a tree in a residential area has been there for far longer than the residential area itself and so new trees won't root, won't take, etc. You'd think it would be counter to our business model to have someone standing there telling a prospective customer "You know, if you cut this tree down, it'll never be able to be replaced and the tree is valued at approximately *this absurd amount* in replacement cost.", But it always worked in our favor. Firstly, we never had a single incident of "No, I changed my mind!" after we've spent an hour getting all of our equipment in place and set up, and second the honesty and candor built trust between us and the prospective customer, and they would use us exclusively for future tree work and tell their friends about us. Anyway, the point is, after working with that arborist I came to understand the lifecycle of various species of trees, and how precious and irreplaceable some truly are. I've become a woodworker (hobbyist) since, and really enjoy it because it involves a really satisfying process of finding the wood I need in nature, but only taking from replaceable sources. I don't care if that makes me a "tree hugger", but damn... The thought of the damage done by the carelessness of those assholes and the loss of trees that can never be replaced as well as the ecological damage the dropped trees caused. (Totally unprofessional, btw. The company I worked for would cut and split all felled trees unless the customer asked us to leave them, and then we'd sell the split wood off to another company that would store the wood to 'season' it, use organic pesticides to clear the wood of any bugs, than wrap it in plastic and deliver it to gas stations and convenience stores. If you live in an area where you can buy firewood bundles like that, there's a good chance that wood is from trees I personally cut down as right about now the ones from when I worked there are just finished seasoning and are ready to be sold) made me cry like a little kid. Not even ashamed to admit it

    why does that matter? every tree dies, theyre not sequoias ? they're not going to last much longer than what 100 years? pines dont live that long. sounds wrong tbh....by this logic in 60 years time we'll have no trees in cities or any of these places where "utilities have been installed" which doesnt seem to be the case.

    @@Richard-ie1if Richard Roberson as a person ages they become less able and it's probably the same as trees. by the time they die they probably won't be able to do much anymore but they live for hundreds of years in some cases (some trees could be older than America too) so chopping them down while they're still young and healthy would ultimately be bad for the environment, just like killing a load of young healthy people would be bad for society. trees can also be homes for many animals so chopping them down would be the equivalent of knocking down a high rise apartment complex while some of the residents were still in there. my point is, trees die just like people but killing them in their prime is what's going to affect us more than a few pine trees reaching their expiry date. also sorry for any inaccuracies i don't know much about trees

    Back before my parents lost their house in the 2008 crash we had a very large tree in our backyard that our neighbors hated. The guy especially was often whining about how it put to much shade in his garden. This tree was HUGE so it was probably several decades old. My family had zero attachment to this tree and finally told our neighbor that if he wanted the tree gone, he could take it down himself. Well when he got some kids from his church to come help take it down it actually turned out to be a really good thing for me as I was the only one there at the time - the rest of my family was on a travel assignment and i stayed home to care for the animals. The thing was the side of our fence facing the street by our neighbors house just fell over after a bad storm and as i have very bad knees i couldnt find a way to make it stay shut anymore.. so i was having to really keep an eye on my dog. I told them they could go through that side since the fence was down, and they did. And even better they fixed the fence for me when they left! So in this case it really did turn out well for everyone involved. Also one reason we were more than OK with them taking down the tree was it was getting impossibly tangled in the electricity wires that ran over the fences dividing yards. It really was becoming a hazard. Well now everyone is happy!

    Was this his first insurance claim for cutting down trees without permission? I suspect he’s done this a number of times before and that’s why the insurance company went after him. Insurance is intended to cover for Accidents, not willfull damage and ignorance. I think the Insurance Company had evidence that he ignored and avoided the problems, so had legal cause for going after him. Without having full details, that could easily be the explanation.

    I was aware that trees had value, but I was not aware that their value was so high. Too many people are overeager to mess with / destroy other people's trees or even trees on public property. I have a beautiful sycamore in my front yard. It has a substantial trunk size by now, such that it is a protected tree. Yet I have wacko neighbors who want it cut down because of its fall leaves blowing into their yards. I bought the house because I loved the tree. No way am I cutting it down (aside from the fact that it is illegal for me to cut the tree because it is considered a protected tree due to the trunk circumference). The tree is now about 60 years old. It shades our house and cools down half the house during very hot weather, reducing AC cost. As I told one idiot neighbor, the tree will be cut down over my dead body. It is actually illegal to cut down this tree. I do not know why these idiots want me to do something that would cause me to be heavily fined. Or maybe they are just morons. Sycamore trees of my type of tree can live 300 years. I love my tree.

It was around noon at the time. when we get to the back yard we see one lone worker (guessing his coworkers were on lunch) just doing a bit of tidying up after they had just finished grinding the stump of a huge tree that used to be in the back yard. My roommate does not hesitate and starts going on about "What did you do to my tree? that's been in the family for years!" The poor worker just looked like a deer in the headlights. he just stammered without getting an actual word out for about 10 seconds before my roommate lets him know that we are the lawn guys and are just f**king with him. It was so great.

    The second story: Once they agreed to the remediation of planting new trees and cleanup, they should have lost all recourse for more money. A deal is a deal. Don't make deals if you aren't ready to abide by them. Everything after that should be illegal and is absolutely unreasonable. Reneging on the deal made later and not abiding by proper terms is EXACTLY the same misdeed that the tree company did in the first place, even... (Talking about the "clean it up and replant" agreement, not the original nonexistent cutting tree agreement)

    I once had a tree sapling that I planted in my backyard (I was probably 8-9 at the time), and after about a month I went out to check on it and someone had cut it, we could tell it was intentional because it was a very clean cut. To this day I still don't know who did it as I live in a crowded neighborhood with many suspects (I made a suspect list lol). Also about two years later my cousin and I made a tomato garden on the opposite side of my yard, and the city ended up destroying it while using big machines to "Fix" our sewer system (If anybody is actually curious I can add that story, tell me in reply). We had pretty stone around the base of the garden that was pushed into the ground, and A really pretty glass Frog statue that meant a lot to me (Nostalgic and stuff) was smashed into a million pieces, and finally Suprise Suprise, the tomatoes never grew. Thanks For letting me Vent, I really would have liked to be able to take people to small court for both of those but, being my age and such, was not able to get my parents to do that.

    It's not legal advice. Plenty of places you can go to learn about the legalities of cutting down large trees in suburban areas. FWIW, most councils won't allow it, unless there is some good reason, and "leaves in my gutter", isn't one of them.

    I'm living in belgium, and for the last several years there have been a few cases where an owner had to cut down a tree / tree's from his backyard because it was blocking the sunlight on the backyard of his neighbours, or because new neighbours, who were still had to build their house, were complaining about a part of the tree would hit the wall of their house. in one of these cases, the owner refused to cut down the tree and he had to pay a daily penalty payment for each day that the tree was not cut down, this ended up with him being forced to sell his house so he would be able to pay for all this. At the same time, people are allowed to build houses right in front of your kitchen window where you won't have any other sight then a brick wall covered with shadow, here in belgium there are no tree laws or anything like that, unfortunatly, it doesn't matter if its your propperty, when people are complaining they give them what they want no matter how, it's sad. In some places in belgium you aren't even allowed anymore to ride off your grass on sundays. A lot of people here can't deal with anything anymore. In and behind my backyard are some tree's, some tree's wich stand here already from before these houses. The old neighbour behind my house, complained about how she had to clean up the leafes on her side garden when it's the time of the year when leafes fall of from the tree's, she had the city make cut down the tree. The tree was very old, very beautiful, very large and and in summer it was a giant green round tree covering that old ladie's house from my sight. that tree is gone, now i see her brick wall. But there are other tree's on my backyard as i mentioned alreay, one of them is a chestnut tree, wich is located right next of the border of my backyard and what's behind it. She get a lot of leafes and chestnuts on her sidegarden as well from this tree, if she ever complains about it and takes it to court, then that's a fucked up position for me, because i'll have to give her what she want. In my street in front of the houses on the other side of the street are those japanese tree's with these pink leafes, the owners of those houses choose to buy the houses when the tree's were already there. today more and more house owners cut down those tree's, because for just a few days on the year their car gets covered with these falling pink leafes, leafes wich will blow of when driving, but to them its enough to cut the tree, to cut this beautiful and colerful joy for the eyes... Luckely i have such a tree in my backyard.

    My brother worked as an arborist about 20 years ago, some of the local cities had ordinances protecting certain trees, with fines for removal of up to $1,000 per inch of diameter. It can be very costly to remove certain types of trees, even from your own property.

  • @SilverScaleMA
    @SilverScaleMA4 жыл бұрын

    People don't realize just how freaking much trees can be worth. There was one tree in a neighborhood near where I used to live in that quite a while back the new owner of the land it lived in wanted to cut down but actually couldn't be because at some point it actually had become officially a historical landmark and belonged to the city. It did later have to be cut down because it had gotten hit by lightning (and also had some other damage from previous parasitic and fungal infections) and was becoming a safety risk. But they did save several cross sections of the tree that were bought/donated to several of the local museums and historical buildings. I remember reading that the estimated value of that tree alone was like nearly 5 million because of the historical and botanical value of the tree since it was nearly as old (possibly older) as the town and was one of those trees that will not grow in urban areas (some species of oak that is fairly uncommon in the area anyway) so is literally irreplaceable. But the best part of the story is that this $5mil tree nearly got cut down because some guy didn't like that it dropped so many acorns and leaves on his new property and the only reason the entire thing blew up is a neighbor saw the guy out with a tree cutting company employee (getting a quote) and called the city which called the tree company to tell them they had no right to touch the tree and would be sued if they did. Then the guy threatened to cut the tree down himself and the city had to step in and explain that since the tree did not in fact belong to him either he would be fine if he damaged it in any way and they told him that they would pay for any services it required (spraying, raking, etc. They were actually being very generous with the offers). The guy refused, slipped somewhere in the conversation, and ended up admitting that he would take care of the tree just like he was taking care of fixing the house he bought. The only problem with that was that the house was also a registered historic house and any changes had to be approved by the city and completed by certified professionals. So the guy ended up having to move out because the city took back the house citing violations of contract (which you have to agree to when buying a historic property) and fines for damages to a historic property from his "renovations". Someone else ended up buying it who was a history buff and had it fixed up properly and very nice. They were also one of the people who tried really hard to save the tree and probably is the reason it hadn't died before they had to cut it down (there had been some pretty serious infestations of various kinds the few years before that did kill a lot of other trees in the area. The new owner was very on top of making sure the tree got sprayed regularly and was treated for damages quickly to keep it healthy). There really wasn't anything that could be done after the lightning strike, it would have obliterated most other trees from what I heard. Trees really do get taken for granted most of the time.
