@@blooblaa5905Make sure your shoes are tied before you run off to help someone else, because if they aren't tied then you're going trip and fall on your fkn face and risk hurting yourself as well as being useless to the person you're trying to help. It's an analogy. Just means, make sure to sort yourself out and make sure you're actually ready before you go and help someone else. Don't forget your own self for the sake of others.

I love the one about how the guy stacked his leave. I remember catching a 3 day suspension for supposedly clocking in 3 minutes late. During my suspension I was accepted into a Ph.D. program. A week later I took a month of family medical leave, because my wife had surgery and could not walk. Best paid time off of my life.

I once had an area manager of a company that was a workaholic. Guy had a wife and kid. Calls kept coming in, it was 2 hours after we were supposed to close and he kept taking orders. I called his home and talked to his wife while I was out on delivery (car parts, also he was dumb and gave his home number on his card so people could reach him when he was at home which seemed to only be when he slept). She called to the store and let him have it. I also made noise when I got my check the next week, state law is that if you are made to work AFTER a business closes according to posted hours the business must pay x2 per hour. I had all my pay stubs went into his office after months of every weekend working with him and told him he owes me a grand and this is enough money to be walked out of here in handcuffs and have the gov crawl through the company to find everything else being violated... suddenly I never worked with him again, was paid more than I was owed by a few hundred, and a few months later after I quit (which itself was a few weeks after this event) I learned his wife got a divorce because the guy wanted to literally live at work and used every excuse possible to never see his wife or kid.

Our new IT VP came from another country. In the USA and our State we have maternity leave depending on the type of birth. One important programmer was pregnant and delivered by C-section. She was still in the hospital when the VP told her to return to work. Because in His country woman only takes one or two days off. The night that she returned home the VP showed up and told her she was going to work regardless. The next morning at 8 am the boss and his friends showed up and tried to physically take her to work. They were arrested and the boss hit a female police officer. Needless to say he was fired.

The sheriffs department I worked for had us come in about 45-30 min early everyday to talk to the officers on previous shift to get a feel for what was going on in the area we were to patrol. It totally sucks especially when your going to be working anywhere from 8-16 hours straight depending on if your mandated to work a double shift.

In many states it is actually illegal for an employer or management of an employer to call you about work outside the usual hours you work. Most overlook it but if you have regular contact with a management member during off hours about work, they are required to pay you for the hour they call you even if it is a 1 minute call.

In my country forcing an employee to come in and work during their 3 month maternity leave/7-14 day paternity leave is asking for the department of labor and employment to strike you down with a bolt of lightning. You can’t deny it either as an employer because that is also asking for a lawsuit 100% (which the wronged employee will absolutely win, no question). So hearing about how awful the system is in the US is wild for me.

A funny little mini story about "Bless Your Heart" I am not personally from the states that use this phrase commonly, but I had family that was so I understood how it was meant to be used. Much later in life I was working at a coffee shop serving a Southern Belle Karen who was not very pleased with something i said and gave the 'eff you' version of Bless Your Heart. She wasn't a regular, probably just on vacation because we live in California wine country; It was sunday and our regular church crowd was just filing in so I raised my voice. "Thank You For Letting Jesus Into Your Heart Ma'am!" As if I rang the dinner bell all the churchgoers came over to crowd around the woman who they did not recognize thinking she was going to be a new member of their congregation and immediately started chatting her up putting her on the spot. I had guessed correctly that she would have too much pride to misbehave in front of a bunch of church folk and conducted herself oh-so-politely for the remainder of my transaction with her before getting roped into an hour long chatter session with a bunch of strangers she's never going to see again. Her problem? I had told her it was going to take a few minutes for me to warm up the pastry that she wanted because we used a traditional oven and not a microwave; she wanted her treat to go because she was trying to catch a tour.

During the 1960s my father did an audit for an ancient bookbinders in London. At Christmas one year they were having payments problems. The manager/owner politely asked the "Men", if they could possibly manage to wait an extra week for their wages, by which time he would have been paid and could not only pay their wages, but inckude a bonus for waiting. The union said it was out of the question and pulled the work force out. That was on the wednesday. By saturday the gates were padlocked shut and there were sounds of destruction coming from the works. The men came back to work on the monday to find bits of scrapped cast iron machinery being put into the backs of several trucks. There was an apologetic notice on the gate stating that due to non-compliance of the work force, the firm had gone bankrupt. There was not only any owed wages, but no more bindery, having gone for scrap, no more work ever. This was in 1966. All that was needed was a bit of leeway from the men. All was lost.

Story) Family owned business I worked for a small business and took care of several areas of IT. computer repair, communications, shipping & receiving, pickup & delivery. The owner had me make a switch of phone lines for sales demonstrations. I cannot recall how long it was between the sales demo and the day he became aware the phone lines hadn't been returned to the previous configuration, but the day he figured it out, he called me to his office and asked why I hadn't taken care of the switch back. I replied that he hadn't instructed me to. He went on a rant that implied I should have read his mind. He also started calling me fairly mild but not nice names. (Note: This Small Business Owner was the type that if you did something without his approval you would get yelled at and told not to make decisions without his input. Conversely IF you Didn't take the initiative and show you were proactive, you would get yelled at for not making a decision. I. e. Damned if you did and damned if you didn't.) While he was vilifying me and casting aspersions on my parentage, I told him I was going back to doing the minimum he initially hired me for, seeing as how he'd made several promises that he hadn't followed through on. I then vacated his office and went out back for a smoke. This was on a Friday. The shop supervisor came out and said the guy told him to find out what day I wanted to be my last day. Today or Monday? I looked at my supervisor and asked why would he think I wanted to extend my stay past today, which the supervisor nodded his head and said he agreed that it was a dumb question. Shortly after that I got a temp position with a world renowned manufacturing company in their IT department, which ultimately lead to being hired by another department as their internal IT person for their 75 users and eventually becoming the administrator for their in house servers. I only left that company after 14.5 years when the 2008 banking crisis lead to mass lay-offs in 2009.

Story) Print problem with bleed lines One place where I worked as in house IT, I was dealing with illustrators. One of the supervisors in this area was frustrated. The old laser printers would print edge to edge and graphics scaled to size ratio and evenly. New high end printers could have certain parameters adjusted but would not print edge to edge and the graphics wouldn't always scale properly. Eventually after explaining this a couple of times and showing the depth of my research, the supervisor finally came up with new procedures and quit insisting that there had to be a way. At least they never tried to blame me for anything and thanked me for my diligence. The funny thing about the old printers was, they would occasionally lose synchronization. The laser was aimed at a 6 sided spinning mirror. Loss of sync was between the mirror and the drum that the image was created on. This meant that the pages of illustrations looked like the printers were pretending to be Salvador Dalí. Unfortunately those printers were eventually retired. Yes they were a pain at times and always had loose toner hanging around in the nooks and crannies, but they weren't as fool-proofed as newer printers like HP.

UK parents have 52 weeks maternity leave between them. first 2 weeks is mandatory. 39 weeks are paid (stat maternity pay), at 90% of weekly earnings for first 6weeks, and £184 for the remaining 33 weeks. UK allows you to split this between parents, though usually guys get the first two weeks, while the mum takes the most of it (hasnt really changed since the new ligislation came in). three days is awful companies usually enhance this.

I personally think many of those teachers are overpaid as the number of teachers that actually do their job competently are in the definite minority. Don't get me wrong, there are good teachers still out there, but most are just there for a paycheck. Often, these are the ones that bitch about the pay the most. Our education system in the US needs a major overhaul. Starting with a bonus system based on the performance of their students tested by an outside source. Real educators deserve the hefty bonus and the underachievers need to be shown the door with advice about protecting their posteriors on the way out.
