Possibly. Depends on the group and perhaps the agency. YG has monster rappers in their discography so of course a few of them will be the most well known, but their vocalists would not be considered "unnoticed or unsuccessful".

@@omao4938 Come again? That might be the situation in other agencies, but not so in YG as i understand. GD is not the dancer/visual of his group. Neither was CL. Neither is Bobby. Neither is Mino. Neither is Jennie. Neither is Haruto. But they are the most popular in SK for their groups (as per SKor surveys) and internationally, save for BlackPink, who have Lisa and is an exception for her huge international following. However, the YG vocalists, who are not as popular as the rappers - clearly are popular in their own right. YB, Minzy, Jinhwan, Yoon, Rose, Yedam (their positions last i checked). This post should just target the agencies where this is prominent. SM. Call them out. They started this whole position thing, and giving prominence to this "SK standard of visual". And now they are promoting Lip Sync through their "vocal powerhouse" AESPA.

That reminded me of Chan and Felix interview with Eric. The question was "with what song did you auditionned?" Chan told the song he chosed to audition with and Felix said none he just danced and he was in. Chan was like I had to sind, I had to dance, I had to play instruments, I had to do everything. And when you know that Chan became a trainee way before Felix did, it correlate with what the video says. The more we go into the years the less Kpop is going to be about talent and music.

I like dance, I don't have problem when they use pre recorded voice when they are dancing because honestly it require lot of energy to dance and breathing goes out of control but I think they can be genuine , if they don't want to sing while dancing , no need to act as if you are singing because like it's ok bro everyone understand it's difficult.... But honestly their are idols who sing while dancing .... I don't even watch "live" performances anymore because I could just as well watch the MV with all the lipsyncing going on. The only group I watch live performances of is Itzy because they actually sing live and get on stage to put on a show, not just look pretty and mime along to a recording. It's sad that this is the case now. Especially with SM, they've got some of the best singers in the industry but ALL of them lipsync now. I wonder who made that dumb ass decision.

The live vocals even its crackly is WAY BETER than just them pretending to sing all the time, I hope someday we could hear more vocals live because many of them actually could SING

You are absolutely correct. Rosé is the only member who can sing without a back track and sound like the studio version. But, even though she’s the least popular she still has endorsements with major brands, trends every time she sings alone and is actually the second best dancer in the group now. If she went solo and got the right marketing she could do well

honestly speaking jisoo carried blackpink live performances, rosie is the main vocalist so there’s no doubt, but you see that jisoo has the same stability or even better. Jennie in my opinion often runs out of breath, so she skips her lines occasionally and rely on the backtracks. Lisa is a dancer so yeah it’s obvious. I say this after watching coachella and BST hydpe park performances including their solo performances

This is why I adore (G)I-DLE, and Soyeon as a judge on My Teenage Girl. She's the only one who dared to call out that everyone was voting on pretty girls instead of talent. I really hope they are one of the groups that can break the 7 year curse, because the K-POP industry needs more 4th gen groups like this, tbh (though they technically kinda debuted in the grey area in between 3rd and 4th gen, IK).

I too wanna be moved by the singing, the song and the effort they put the emotion they brings out singing live. it is ok to sound out of breath while dancing, it is ok to have voice crack as long as they can sing live. in fact, some of them actually want to sing live, coz it is their dream to sing.

i want idols to get good vocal training but being an idol is so much more than singing. you need to be able to dance, entertain, mc, model, do fanservice, be cute and charming. they sell a whole package and singing is just one part of that

Problem is that delusional fans don't even admit their idols use autotune even if it's right in their face. It hurts their idols that way, too, by holding them to such an impossible standard and acting as if that's their natural voice.

Looking back it's a little surprising that Rose outright said she doesn't have time for music because she has "work". It's basically admitting, in their documentary no less, what people have been saying for years: their job is not to be a musician. They model, they influence, they perform, and sometimes they make music to promote the first three things. People call Blackpink models/influencers as a diss but that's the goal of a kpop idol: to be seen as attractive and to gain endorsements. The most successful idols are the ones who get modeling jobs, sponsors, acting deals, etc. It's never been about the music

Mamammo is one of the group that actually sing live in every performances and this is why I love them

@@JustAnotherBlink Actually, Solar's solo sales were pretty good, she was probably the 2nd or 3rd most successful among female soloists in 2020 in terms of album sales(behind Moonbyul). Spit It Out mv views are also over the double the views for 'Eclipse'(Moonbyul ep title track). Also she's the strongest in terms of raw/belting power, but technically she is/was the 3rd best among MAMAMOO's vocal line. Though recently, she has improved a lot so she can probably be considered as good as Hwasa in terms of technique. Both are still slightly behind Wheein(technically), but the gap is very small

Choreo really killed it, the dances became so complicated that it’s not even possible to sing live anymore. Look at Gfriend who accounted for difficult vocal lines by having whoever was singing the line stand still while everyone else continued choreo. It’s painfully obvious now when groups aren’t singing since they are doing crazy dance moves and there’s no change in vocals

Another group, although not a KPOP group who utilizes this "person standing while others are dancing" technique is Babymetal, and although their choreography isn't the most technical, it's still something that should be appreciated with their genre and overall concept as well.

It crosses a line though when the standard choreo of a song they'll be promoting for months on end and also practicing already has detrimental effects on the idols health that impact them for the rest of their life. Those choreograpies should be reserved for special stages

ATEEZ’s agency’s CEO said “it’s okay, they know you’re singing live” when they had voice crack on stage. I miss this mentality. But what infuriates me the most is when fans praised their faves as “eat the CD” when they clearly lipsync/autotune live and then bashed other groups that actually sing live, like... There's something wrong in their heads.

it's so odd that kpop is supposed to be a genre of music, but it's more dance and visuals than anything. if anything the music producers should be the ones recognized musically because the autotuned vocals are just accessories at this point. they're almost no different than vocaloids, but at least for vocaloid/virtual singer music, the producers are the ones who receive the recognition. i always struggled to listen to kpop and only ever tried because i really love mamamoo, but everyone outside groups centered around vocals always felt so lackluster to me. i always felt like i was trying really hard to convince people that mamamoo's dancing was super unique or whatever so people would give them a chance, but I personally never really cared about the dance in the first place. at the end of the day, i'm trying to find artists that are enjoyable to listen to on spotify whose voices add character to their music.

been in kpop 15 years and they're there but barely, like atp you literally have to dig now, cause the new standard is mediocrity and manufactured visuals. some recs, based on who i actually listen to anymore in kpop: - bang yedam - sumin - p1harmony -seventeen - exo - kiss of life - shinee - STAYC - Nmixx there's also like mamamoo and red velvet etc. but i personally don't like their music like that/consistently so when you combine who can and will actually sing..with whether or not you even like the group as a group or their music like that in the 1st place it's a really small pool...but yeah as far as new gen for guy groups Literally only P1harmony (everyone needs to STOP sleeping on them istg this is getting ridiculous) and then StayC NMixx and KOL are doing it for me

​@@lenanicole2837IMHO you forgot the guys of NCT127. Taeil, Doyoung, Haechan and Jaehyun are very serious about their singing and when they record they are nearly pitch perfect.

I just miss live singing so much. The few groups who do sing live, they intentionally make small mistakes or miss notes to prove that they're actually singing and not lip syncing. And its not like its been going on for really long, its just in the past year or two that a lot of idols seem to have totally switched off their mics. And I just really don't get why? Like, did something happen? Did they get too used to online performances during the pandemic and now they don't wanna sing anymore? What am I missing?

I think especially because of the pandemic with no live audiences for music shows they work more on camerawork to get more online traction/views a lot more cuts and rerecording meaning they won't sing live for all of those takes But yeah this image of perfect vocals is is such a lie

this development has been in progress for over a decade. before 2010 idols would actually sing live to a clean instrumental, no backup vocals. then singing live over a backtrack started getting more popular, and then using a pre-recorded track that sounds live and lipsyncing to that. overall kpop used to be more vocal focused and now it's more performance focused. i don't expect idols to sing while dancing the choreos that are standard today

@@ffrai3094 so true there has been a gradual progression. Though I hope that there is a compromise somewhere. Like for some (not all of the performance) even if they have to stand still to sing their part (then join back into choreo or even adjust the choreo the latter I find least likely to happen) and not even all the lines (because some lines are just too strenuous to sing live with how high kpop songs are) would be nice.

The fact that almost no one in this comment section knows who Ailee is literally proves their point at 1:08. I feel like the industry had a strong shift from vocals to visuals in 2015/2016 and it's just been getting worse ever since. People argue about what it means to be an idol, but I believe vocals should come first. You don't put an idol's song on your playlist because of the choreography and the visuals. You put it on your playlist because of the music and their voice(s). K-pop's rising perfection standard needs to be put to an end.

I mean to be fair Ailee did not really actively promote her music for a while...and since she first peaked in like 2015-16 it's not really surprising that not a lot of people know her right now...but yeh the general shift from vocalists to dancers and visuals is definitely a thing...there is not really a lot of newer groups where the main vocals are still one of the most popular members (onf is the only one that comes to mind rn, tho hyojin is ALSO their visual kind of so idk) but I also have to say that visuals have always been and will always be the most popular members...arguably the visual focus was even higher for 2nd gen (and especially 2.5 gen....infinite's L is the living proof of that)

Indeed agree with @LiaShinigami, she's truly amazing but I recall few years back she's actually has problem with her label, that later requires her to be off the show for a while since the problem also regarding the copyright of the songs which of course Ailee won the copyright but that years makes her unable to perform. I don't think the variables takes place is just nowadays industry standards, but also how well the management put the talent to stay existing and relevant. I personally put Ailee on my number 1 kpop singer all the time.

Ailee also had a scandal around 2013 where her nude photos pre-debut were leaked. South Korea is very conservative, so that had a lot of effect on her popularity as well.

@Equinox you do know kpop is a genre of music right?? You go to any kpop stan and they’ll tell you they got into by kpop because one groups SONG not because they’re ’pretty’. This comment is exactly why the kpop industry is turning it’s artists into a bunch of robots. Like the video stated these idols will soon be replaced when the industry figures out how to either make Ai’s more realistic to replace them or photoshop idols dancing to the point of perfection. Idols are humans, so obviously when this happens and they perform live they’ll get bashed and have to train until the point of death just to achieve these ridiculous standards. Stop justifying what will (if not already) hurt many idols.

That's why I loved 2ne1 so much because they looked unique to themselves and sing live, even if it isn't perfect at least it's authentic. Wanting perfection at the cost of authenticity will get us closer to autotune and AI for entertainment. I wonder if we are really moving quick to a virtual reality.

Hwasa isn't a traditional visual. Along with the rest of MMM, she was disliked for not meeting the visual standards for women in kpop. She built a brand for herself, which was clever- this is what MMM has done since Day 1 since the korean audience can't accept a vocal focused group. 😭i feel happy seeing her mentioned! I am so biased to her since 3mix days. I remember watching her in sicteen and feeling surprised. And slightly disappointed by some others (as they debuted close to after 2nd gen ended and things were more live back then than now). They are all fantastic idols and twice is my favorite group. Just saying jeongyeon did a good job.

@@Kat-y_L I don’t know what your point is? During encore stages and other performances Jeongyeon is usually one of the most, if not the most, stable. Unfortunately she doesn’t get a lot of lines but that’s what makes her underrated. I wish she did get the lines she deserves. Choruses could be distributed better between 3mix but JYPE sticks to their formula where Nayeon being the face of the group and center gets the most lines. Sure it works, but I feel like it would work better if JYPE unlocked their potential. Not even just of JY but for other members too.

Tbh, I like Rosé's cover performances more because I feel like she enjoys it more. I feel like her true capability as a singer and passion for singing comes out and shines.

It's like they're just models who occasionally sing at this point and that's not their fault of course. Yg knows what their doing and I feel like they purposely delay comebacks because they know fans will stream more after a long wait smh. Glad they got solos at least(wish jisoo did too but I know she's busy)

@@liltree8382 I mean singers outside of kpop use auto tune too. The kpop industry is so competitive companies wouldn't debut people who can't sing at all, they just don't sing and dance at the same time but even western celebs don't so I don't get your point

The reason why I only really stan are Exo, SVT, and Mamamoo. Their vocals are superb and killing it. Also snsd and Ailee. And in groups, my bias wrecker are always the vocalists like they're already my bias but they can still be my bias wrecker. I actually prefer vocals, dance, performance, and charisma rather than visuals. If you got visual then congrats, you get a plus. I don't know about others but it's fun to watch, hear, and see various techniques and learn from them in kpop. No doubt, I got to improve my singing through the idol groups/soloists I stan and it's pretty cool.

It has genuinely pained and confused me for so many years how Ailee has never quite managed to find her fan base. She's incredible. Like genuinely outstanding as a singer, dancer, and all around performer. The fact that despite the overwhelming talent she has that she was told she wasn't good enough because she somehow didn't look the part? Outrageous to the point that I don't understand it.

I think she did, initially, have a dedicated fanbase. She was known for her powerful, women empowering songs. She was called the Korean Beyonce. Where she lost it was when she released A New Empire in 2016. It had nothing to do with what she had put out previously and she wasn’t far enough in the game to do such a 180, IMHO. She took a big risk. The tracks weren’t so bad, but it alienated her existing fanbase with it being so urban/RnB. It felt forced, disingenuous and unoriginal. Ngl, the fact that she put on weight in such a cutthroat industry as kpop probably didn’t help. But I think it was mainly the genre switch, because urban/RnB didn’t do well mainstream in Korea at that time.

@@Aithnyk Exactly. A New Empire flopped and Ailee completely left K-pop for 2 years. The only thing she released was a few OSTs (IWGTYLTFS being super successful but that’s besides the point.) She definitely would’ve had a bigger, more dedicated fanbase if she had released more music and YMC promoted her better in 2012-2015.

​@@ntent1 Ailee was everywhere pre-2016. For a non big-3 solo artist, she was doing really well. That last album with YMC was where everything went left. I remember being very confused as a fan. But she's in it purely for the artistry, not the fame. She spoke in some interviews about not being in a good place mentally at that time and before, because of industry beauty standards.

I'm honestly glad someone pointed this out. I am someone who has been singing for a while now so I know a lot about voice and I am a SUCKER for unique voices and live singing. I have been noticing all these autotune and backup vocals that are louder than actual vocals for a while now which is why I am only now involved in CERTAIN K-pop groups. They have amazing vocal ability and you can tell they were trained to sing with everything else. I'm also glad you mentioned the survival shows (especially the Sana thing, I wanted her instead of Chaeyoung...I don't know how her name is spelled -- because of how good her live was). I'm also glad you mentioned the live vocals that aren't really live. They either have autotune or backtracks. Backtracks are okay when they are turned down so you can actually hear the vocals, which there are some like that, but most are so loud that you can't even tell. I really wish this wasn't the direction K-pop was going. Idols are becoming afraid to sing live because ignorant fans can't understand why it sounds so different and raw. We need a new title for ACTUAL live vocals. I suggest [RAW LIVE]. Anyways, thanks for reading this far.

agree with everything that's why I don't see live stages anymore and i know that I'll go to some concerts cause i love the music but without hearing anything live... it makes me so sad and also so angry the fact that idols are becoming so good at lipsyncing that fans in the comments are cheering their "live" vocals and if u say that they are not live they get MAD. Cause understandably they don't know anymore how raw vocals sound like. and who gets hate? the idols who are bad at lipsyncing (aespa for example). I'm afraid this is not gonna change and that's why I'm not gonna stan groups anymore or at least yes but only for the songs. Can i ask you which groups do u trust for this? cause i became at a point where i trust only bts and then a bit (cause there are live stages but not always) stray kids, blackpink, stayc, nmixx, mamamoo and itzy. I know other idols who can sing like aespa or txt but they never let them do that live rip. Ah and btw i mean live overall in concerts, I don't care if in music bank they don't, it's okay cause it's all centred on visuals, but in real concerts they should sing live at least for most songs. sorry this comment is so confusing ahah just to say that i agree with you completely

@@felixfelicis127 Yep sure! The main groups I still follow are BTS, Seventeen, TxT, and now Ateez is added to that list. They may not always sing live, but you can audibly tell when they are, which I like. For more demanding choreo or parts of songs that have affects, they may choose not to sing to catch a breath or something. But those four groups are honestly just amazing at what they do. I mainly Stan guy groups, but I seen stages done by Twice, Itzy, and Lessarfarim (I tried spelling it ok...). And their performances are amazing, but since I don't watch them often, I am not sure about vocals. A group I stopped following are Enhypen-- because I don't like their music very much now. It's sad cause they are at performances, vocals are alright. I don't think here live all the time though since it's not their strong thing. You safest bet will always be Seventeen though, those guys are live, their rappers and vocalists are almost always live.

Man agreed with everything you said about Somi in particularly. She has improved a lot and I enjoy her live vocals so much. Why not let her obviously "raw" performances speak for themselves? She's honestly the full package now and auto-tuning her to death is a huge missed marketing opportunity by her company.

This is why I stan STAYC. Compared to other groups, their choreo might not be the most badass (for example like aespa) BUT they actually do alot of live singing! Which makes them so unique 😍

Hwasa being known for her looks doesn’t mean its positive. She got a lot of attention because of her unconventional looks more than she got attention for her vocal skills. To this day Hwasa is known for “setting new beauty standards” more than for her abilities.

I only disagree with you about the last part where u pointed "IU is a beloved actress" and "Hwasa is known for her visual". Both of them are good vocalists, especially IU is a very renowned singer, she's was not just trained to be a stable vocalist, she's a skilled and talented vocalist. Hwasa is a completely different singer but she's very good too. She really knows how to use her voice and sings live more often than most idols nowadays. In my opinion, both of them are known for their talent as singers.

She was explaining that singing was not what they were known for, not because they were'nt good at it, it's just that they gathered more attention for other reasons rather than their singing abilities. She was trying to highlight the issue that the audience nowadays do not value an artist's live singing skills.

Yes, new fan of kpop really miss alot of older generation. For example, shinee choreography is really hard but they still manage to sing live. 2pm during their debut era that doing acrobatic on stage also sing live. What the reason why newer kpop group don't want to sing live nowday.

@@ffrai3094 It can sound good with good technique, for example with Tvxq. Those unattainable 'live' vocal standards aren't reachable even for talents like Wendy, Ailee or Mamamoo while dancing, while they can easily sound better than studio versions or post-productions if they don't have to dance. And then, there are most idols these days who won't sound 1/4th as good as the ones I mentioned without post-production(most probably won't sound even as good as Siyeon from Dreamcatcher who is an average vocalist), even if they don't have to dance. And the worst part about this situation is that, these idols didn't even choose this themselves, many even failed to reach their dream as singers unjustly as was shown in this video

the fact in interviews, videos, etc. oneus will happily sing live always astounds me. they might not have the best vocals in that video (they were very emotional) but i do appreciate their constant attempts to sing live.

It honestly just makes me sad I love live vocals and I love when Kpop actually had them it’s unreal how many people in the industry are talented but will never get the recognition

When I first got into Itzy I was so shocked they sang all their music show performances live because their choreos are always so intense. But honestly I much prefer out of breath live singing than flawless lipsyncing and pre recorded vocals. Not that there’s anything bad about either. It’s just personal preference

imo if you can hear clearly, their comeback showcase and promotions for mafia and loco are prerecorded vocals. the last time they sing live for comeback showcase and promotions were during not shy era. kinda disappointed with that decision but I hope they could start doing live vocal performances again in the future cause we know they’re hella talented

Yes there are some parts that are prerecorded, like certain notes in the chorus for example so they don’t strain their vocals but they do genuinely still sing live. Trust me I’m not just being delusional or something

@@rjaw_itzy honey I know that you ride hard for itzy but no nobody is lying about anything. You just need to be able to differentiate between live singing and pre-recorded vocals. They are not the same. Depending on the intricacy of the choreo, pre-recorded vocals might be a smarter choice.

Aespa is so talented, but sm doesn't let them sing live. I don't get it. Taeyeon almost never promotes live singing anymore, her concerts were top tier until the virus. What is it SM, we know you have the best vocals? Let your artist sing live before they get crowned with queens of lip sync T.T SM only lets their idols sing "live" on their channel where they use autotuned mics now.

Because its not really worth it anymore. No one cares if its live or not.. and some just cant tell. You see the comments, but the majority of fans would be happy with the choreo looking good and the idols looking good. Its a different era. :(

This is why SNSD caught my ears, because they debuted singing and dancing live, it was so real, had awesome energy and the vocals were on point.

most 2nd gen idols debuted and performed live. Sure, autotune started to become popular at their time, too and they experimented with it, but the live performances were still live for the most part. I think that's what I miss with old kpop. People were also more natural with their skin color, now everyone is bleached so much.

Yes, but if things are like this it's because it's what most fans want. Companies do what's most lucrative, and what's most lucrative is what fans are willing to pay for and stan, and fans obviously want to stan pretty people, not vocalists. We've seen it time and time again with all the survival shows.

unfortunately with the past decade emphasis on mass-buying, group ordering, breaking pre-order records, gachafication of photocards, etc. theres no financial incentive to start or to continue singing live once youve got a solid fanbase. the only upside is respect from non-fans, which doesnt translate directly into money.

14:48 you’re almost completely right, except for IU: she debuted as a soloist during second gen, when vocalists were still the most valued members of a group (see: Taeyeon’s popularity vs Hyoyeon’s during most of the time snsd was active as a group). Of course, her doll-like visuals helped a lot, and I’m sure her work as an actress has played a huge role in her continued relevance as the preference for idols shifted to dancers. But her initial burst of fame came from her clear vocal tone and how seemingly effortlessly she could reach high notes. That’s just a small correction I have for an otherwise great video!!

i'm not gonna lie but taeyeon was also quite famous for her visuals , if you look at snsd , the famous one are mostly yoona , yuri , seohyun ( for visuals) tiffany ( for being a foreign member) taeyeon ( for vocal and visual) even during 2nd gen visual members were popular but vocals had their popularity as well , nowadays some groups literally survive on their visual .

Love the plethora of different examples that you chose to share! I wished they let us hear more of the real voices from the idols. It provides so much more expression and energy to the song when I can hear their actual voices. I want to hear their hard work that they put into honing their voices to such degree. It's a shame that the companies are so focused on creating this "perfection" when the idols themselves are already amazing on their own. As for ONEUS, I have been following them since December of 2019. I've watched their trainee days, their backstage where they'd sing for fun or for practice, and their (at the time) vlives. They can definitely sing. They are from RBW after all. So, with that in mind, it's a real shame that the background music would sometimes overpower their voices.

SUNMI is a visual, yes, but she sings live and can dance while singing, is a composer, producer and lots of more things even when she's not a "main vocal" artist. So, she puts LOTS OF EFFORT into her own thing.

i agree with nearly everything. lmao wendy is undoubtedly a vocal queen, but i wouldn't say she carries 80% of red velvet's live performances. the other girls hold their own just fine (especially seulgi and joy). ik live singing is pretty rare in kpop, but i am glad to see that some 4th gen groups are making an effort to do live performances. for example, stray kids, ateez, itzy, and enhypen! it makes me happy to see idols actually making an effort to sing live :)

Agreed, Sera from Nine Muses and Bom from 2ne1 were badly depicted and punished by the industry and both are amazing singers, they deserved so much more.

Rosé recently covered "Don't Look Back in Anger" by oasis and "December" by Neck Deep which was all completely live and there is when I realised that rosé is more of an artist than an idol. Her love for music is commendable. Tbh blackpink as a whole owned Coachella. And Seventeen has THE best vocalists in kpop who can definitely sing live. I really respect both these groups soo much

I believe Rosé wanted to sing raw live and share something with fans (she has more covers than group has songs) but it's unfortunately obvious that those covers were auto tuned. Her beautiful colour and emotion were completely dropped out by that weird effect.

@@AB-yk2pq to my knowledge they weren't autotuned, rosé made the covers in a really short period of time. Even the guitarist (løren) made some mistakes while playing the guitar, if the covers were autotuned the guitar note mistakes would automatically be corrected.

I mean, she did come to Korea to pursue singing, it's unfortunate for her to endure all those training just to be a model who occasionally releases songs with her group mates. I hope she can have the chance to finally be a singer more than a model, no matter how much money she makes out of the latter two.

My original statement "Not known for great singers" was not meant to imply they can't sing or aren't good singers! Anyways that's my fault for not explaining better. ONEUS is brave for singing live, because they come from Mamamoo's company, just like Purple Kiss.....also one of oneus members has a twin that belongs to another group, a kpop band called ONEWE. hope more people could check them out~ Mamamoo's company produces musically talented individuals~ expect no less from a company that doesn't prioritize visuals over vocal quality and growth as musicians.

STAYC is one of the groups I stan nowadays, they're honestly soooo underrated and deserve so more recognition.

I was so happy when I found the It's Live channel, thinking that idols actually sing live. But some performances sounded too perfect, so I started to doubt if it actually was live. Of course I knew that they used a lot of backing vocals. But some groups started appearing with full on dances and singing perfectly live. Happy that I came across this video!

the most disappointing is shows like King of Masked Singer, etc that also do it. these shows shouldn't have autotune and backtrack should be very low. now if you want to hear live you have to watch someone win and do an encore like when Wheein won 1st place with Make Me Happy. her singing Make Me Happy is 100% live. there's not even a backing track. it's the instrumental and her raw voice. that's it.

I'm so depressed, I feel powerless. It's pathetic how far K-pop has fallen. And how utterly shallow the fans are.

same. i enjoy the music but for they are not singers anymore and i feel very very powerless i'm afraid it's never gonna change for the better anymore. And when i dared writing in comments sometimes that a particular performance wasn't live, fans started to attack me saying i was jealous or smth similar, overall with male groups.

First, the body shaming, then now the auto tuning. Kpop industry has definitely lowered their standards by not acknowledging these vocalists. The companies and the industry have no shame. Body shaming will always be present in the industry even in first gen it was 10x worser than it is now. At the end of the day y’all are sad that visuals are prioritized but do nothing about it.

The saddest part to me is that the real live versions actually sound better imo, the touched up versions sound too fake. And all of this autotune ends up making concerts disappointing if you think they're gonna sound one way and then they sound another. I've known a lot of people who ended up disappointed after a Twice concert because their songs and performances are fun but the live vocals sound nothing like what they expected (and it's not their fault, the company pushed them to this). It's getting more and more difficult to stan new groups who have the same raw vocal talent that older groups do and who can actually sing live well. That's why groups like Stayc and Stray Kids are gems in 4th gen since they put so much of an effort to show that they are singing live in performances. The sad part is that people often say SKZ aren't strong vocally because they don't know what actual live singing sounds like so it sounds worse than the autotune they're used to hearing. Oneus too is a breath of fresh air because they are always willing to sing live even if doesn't sound as clean as people expect, and at their concert that I went to they had their mics up higher than I have ever seen at a kpop concert--one of the best kpop concerts that I've ever been to.

Honestly, I don‘t mind if there‘s some backtracks going on, as long as you can still hear the idols singing on top, considering all the dancing going on but I‘d much prefer to hear a slip once in a while. What reallyyy bothers me is how it‘s communicated that it‘s live and what singing „live“ means these days🙃

i want Kim Sejeong to be recognized so badly😭 she is so underrated! Now she is more known as an actress through Business Proposal and The Uncanny counter, rather than her angelic vocals. I’ve been a kpop stan since 2nd Gen and I never realized that main vocalists have gone from being the most popular members to the least popular members until you said it. And those idol shows are a PERFECT example bc it happens EVERY TIME.

K-pop is becoming internationally popular only because of visuals, dancing, clothing & makeups. If we consider vocals as respect to other vocalist worldwide, none of these idols even stand close to them, except very few. While listening in Spotify, I cannot hear their voice. They sound so metallic. Its so authentic during 2nd and 3rd gen. But 4th is loosing its luster, specially to fans who love vocals.

thank you so much for the enlightenment, I've been pinpointing why I don't stan 4th gen nowadays and now I know. I used to be embarrassed when my IDOL have a crack or flat tone performance. I am not saying that it's something to proud of but I'm saying is that a lot of prev gens sing live. I see a lot of potential with the next gen but since the standard is this I'm afraid that it will consume them sadly.

I've been a kpop fan for a long time, and I've noticed that this issue is getting worse. It's not only the fans but also the kpop companies that are focusing more on looks. In the past we had such great kpop groups but people kept on bashing them for their looks. Now, we have so many younger groups only caring about looks... like seriously. The vocalists these days don't get any attention. People are more into things like how handsome he looks, or how pretty she is. There idols are singers... why are focusing on visuals so much? I mean they do deserve love but I've noticed the fans keep hating on the vocalists. With the new groups, I only notice comments about the visuals, and to be quite honest, some of those visuals are quite poor vocalists. I'm not trying to bash anyone but people need to give the vocalists the respect they deserve. If you find them ugly, that's your problem. There's plenty more people in the world that find them attractive. This damn auto tune is also used to trick us. Kpop needs to go back to the days of talent. It's hard for me to adjust to the new kpop. Some of the new groups do have some powerful singers but they get brushed off. Again, people only care about the visuals. It's sad.

The reason fans and agencies have stopped caring about singing is because it's not relevant to their main job. Idols make money with CFs and brand endorsements not by singing. Idols are literally models that dance on a stage instead of walk on a runway. That's why visuals matter and singing doesn't.

Quite a few idols, mostly visuals, these days can't sing very well. That's why they use so much auto tune. It's quite sad that the fans cares more about looks than talent. In my opinion, the vocalists and dancers are the true gems. They should be appreciated more. It's no use having a nice face, but you can't sing or dance.

It's only in this recent generation that we have these visuals that have no talent. Kpop idols are supposed to have talent. You can't expect to just have a pretty face with no talent. @@smileyface2876 lmao first gen was full of mediocre singers who shamelessly lipsynced on stage. during 2nd gen live singing became more popular, but now kpop is going back to its roots. it's not new, pop idols like backstreet boys, britney spears etc is all about getting pining teenagers invested in beautiful and charming people. that's why kpop groups do so many photobooks, magazine shoots, variety shows, reality shows, backstage clips, vlives, fansigns, online fansigns, live tweet events etc. it's not about what they can do as much as who they are, or who they pretend to be. if it was truly about singing they could just go on stage and perform and then go home "Kpop idols are supposed to have talent." why? kpop agencies want to make money, and they're doing just that. fans can support whoever they want, if they stan visuals it doesn't make them dumb, it just means they want something other than what you're looking for. also being fun, charming and bringing in fans is a talent in itself. to me kpop is pretty people in cool outfits dancing on flashy stages/in flashy mvs, it's fun and it doesn't have to be more than that

Wooowwoo Thank you for this video I am very sensitive to autotune And i actually like live singing more (Autotune give me chills maybe cause it's not authentic) But I'm always hearing the autotune even when video says "live" And it makes me feel upset and question my instincts But now i realise i did sense the difference- it gave me a lot of relief hearing it side by side,so thank you. It's also very sad that singing is left aside.. It's what makes you feel the artist.. But i hope it wil get better with time

A lot of new Kpop fans don't recognize older groups because they weren't pretty enough. I can bet you a lot of people don't know 2NE1, Super Junior, Big Bang, Nu'Est and many other older groups whose strong side is/was in vocals or the music itself. And it's a shame that new vocal idols don't get the recognition they deserve. You can't make a good comeback if your idol doesn't know how to sing from the get go, not only perform. Just as a fun fact, SHINee never playbacks. They genuinely don't know how to lipsync. The times they did lipsync, you could clearly tell they had a backtrack. I don't know if they are still doing it that way since I haven't caught up, but they are an amazing example of a Kpop group.

0:28 I’ve always been trying to point this out. it’s sm, known for being the vocal powerhouse in its industry is now using ONLY prerecorded vocals for their artists’ stage promotions. and for the live performances, they’re using literally autotuned vocals, even for the artists everyone knows are good in singing and all. i miss their old days so much

tbh what I love is how some idols sing live even if they're not the most stable, its actually really fun to hear their absolute raw vocals and even the breathing! like yas girl gimme it

i have some bad news for you. what you posted is heavily autotuned. Sketchbook is know for autotune. i can't believe you think that this is live when you can't hear a single breath in the entire song with that choreography. Heize is standing still and you can hear her breath while singing. in the video you posted you can't hear her breath while doing that choreography.

Just because you can’t hear someone breathing while singing/dancing doesn’t mean they’re lip synching. K-pop idols have had training for many years to maintain their vocals while performing choreography just like any artist. You justify her lip synching because you can’t hear her doing breathing AMSR while singing? Hyolyn must be an excellent lip synch assassin because she’s catching every beat and sound when she’s, ‘lip synching’. She’s literally belting over the actual audio.

You can hear points in here where she is singing live without autotune. Hyorin is in the top 3 vocalist for pure singing talent, alongside Ailee and Taeyeon.
