Still, I am talking about the same mom who got hit by sign that was improperly hanged on a couple of palm trees, which injured her leg while she was 7-8? months pregnant with a heavy baby (at least that's what my mom always said when she talks about my brother cause he was the heaviest among the rest of my siblings). She had to be wheel chaired and my parents had to pay for two extra seats on the plane cause my mom was big cause my youngest (at the time) sibling was taking up a lotta space and she needed space for her injured leg as well. I don't remember if it was a really bad injury because my mom never cried out in pain or scream like it would haunt me so I don't recall. I was very young lol

OP should have left, plain and simple - there's no way that EM didn't have cash or card on her, and even if she had nothing on her OP wasn't under any obligation to pay for EM. If it was the same waitress on the previous two occasions she's at fault for allowing this situation to develop. Why didn't she clarify what she'd been told - if someone had sneakily told me that the other person was paying I'd definitely have checked that this was okay. Waitress needs retraining at the very least.

@@amberb.6395 I ended up watching the entire video again just to be clear on the story - no hardship, it's a good episode. Yes, you're probably correct - I'm sure that calling the police would have backfired spectacularly on the waitress, though I'm sure that she'd have to clear it first with the management/owner, which I can't imagine would have gone well for the waitress. Legally I can't imagine that anyone is under obligation to pay someone else's bill unless there's a prior arrangement or clear understanding. Forgetting what a POS the EM is the waitress handled this very badly. I know that table staff are regularly having to deal with people who dine and dash, but OP wasn't doing that - this is a very clear situation - EM is guilty of manipulating a not particularly bright waitress, while OP is completely innocent.

As someone who’s been a Server for years, That waitress should have gotten her manager or someone of similar status to deal with the woman not wanting to pay her bill. They run the store and know protocol and can deal with the situation better and usually customers respect what the managers say. (I say usually for the non compliant Karens out there) That waitress, unless she was also a manager or something similar she had no right to threaten police. She risks loosing her job by saying things like that, and she can make the store look bad. That’s my way of seeing it at least, I’ve never been a manager before but they tell us to go get them if we ever have an unruly customer.

Exactly right. If someone has paid their bill, they can leave. Whoever didn't will be held. Only time this backfires, it was about 2am, six guys came to eat, and five snuck out. The sixth one realized this and tried to hide in the bathroom, finally we sent one of the male cooks in to get him and had to explain that we understood that the others walked out and left him with the bill, but since he was the one we had, he either had to pay up or be arrested. He had enough to pay his, and he did. We had to send him away with the cops. It turned out he finked on the rest, they went with campus police and the local the next morning and went to all the other guys dorms and collected them. They all got charged and the last guy got off because he did pay his. Hope he found less crappy friends after that.

I work as a bartender, and when groups come in i tend to assume seperate checks and check with the whole table before even printing the checks. As for someone not paying definately should only hold that individual acountable. While I haven't seen it thus far most bars near me would ask for colateral or have you call someone to cover your before letting you leave. But I can understand taking precautions as most restaurants and bars to my knowledge will have the server cover any open tabs they were responsible for at the end of the night.

True i think they should ask for payment before serving the meal or drinks because this is how college kids jip each other. By leaving one person there to flip the bill for the entire table. It might slow the service down but its better to know you got paid then risk a till being short and wasting a shift calling the cops.

Usually restaurant systems have an option whenever a table wants to split a bill (I have worked with only about 6 different systems, so I won't guarantee that it is always that way) and one person can pay their part and leave no issue. In all of the restaurants, bars and hotels I have worked I have never encountered this issue, but we have been told to call the manager in case someone is trying to skip on their bill. TL;DR You can just pay your part of the bill and leave

The first story reminds me of a time when I worked for a fast food place. There was a brush fire in the yard behind our store. Our drive thru emptied into a small side street and the fire truck responding to the call was using that side street so they could get to the fire. Side note, the fire truck blocked people from turning left out of our drive thru, but did not block them from turning right. A guy went thru our drive thru, paid for/got his food, and immediately attempted to turn left. He drove his car within inches of the fire truck's bumper, and started laying on his horn while (profanely) yelling at them to get out of his way, he was in a hurry, he paid their salaries, did they know who he was, he'll sue everyone, etc. When he was told by a Sherriff's Deputy the fire truck was not moving as it was responding to a fire, and he would need to go the other way, he was livid. He told them to move their truck NOW or he (small, 2 door BMW) was going to ram it (full sized tanker truck) out of this way. He then backed up a little and actually rammed the truck! When his airbag deployed, some Sherriff's Deputies managed to drag him out of the car. To my knowledge, the driver was the only one injured (minor bruising). He actually did try to sue the Fire Department for blocking the road, The Sherriff's Department for dragging him out of his car and arresting him, and US because the side street wasn't wide enough to pass the fire truck in the first place. The first was dismissed, because in our state, ALL Emergency Vehicles had the right to park anywhere they wanted while they were on a call. The second was dismissed, as multiple security cameras showed no evidence of wrongdoing on the part of the Sherriff's Department or their Deputies. The suit against us was dismissed, as we did not own, nor have any control over, the side street. The Fire Department counter sued for damage to the fire truck and other equipment, as well as legal fees & court costs. Our franchise owner and the Sherriff's Department only counter sued for legal fees & court costs. All counter suits were granted, curtesy of the audio/video evidence from the security cameras. Funniest thing about it? The guy claimed to be an attorney, and insisted on representing himself. He demanded all 3 cases to be tried together. The judge gave him no less than 4 separate occasions (in open court) to seek outside legal advice before, and during, the case. The guy refused outside legal advice. The guy was also the one who introduced the audio/video from the security cameras in court as evidence of our "wrongdoing".

As a former Maitre d', FOH instructor and current country club bartender, my input on that situation would be to let them argue it out and let OP leave if her portion of the bill was paid. The EM would have been responsible for their portion of the bill. If she refused to pay, that is when I would have passed it up to a manager. As a manager, I would have shown understanding that she thought she was ordering on someone else's dime and offered to comp the last two items on the bill. I would then inform her that she was no longer welcome at the establishment and would be asked to leave if she ever came back. Just because I would understand that she thought she was spending someone else's money doesn't mean I wouldn't judge her for racking up a bill she wouldn't have been willing to pay for herself, let alone someone else. If someone offers to treat you and there are prices on the menu, it's still a faux pas to order the most expensive items or more rounds/courses than your host unless they tell you to go ahead and get whatever you like.

In the last story, the proper procedure would be to hold the woman who's not paying accountable and ensure that they weren't allowed there again, as well as allow the actual person who paid for their food to leave since she clarified that they had made no agreements prior to entering and that she actually paid for her food. I worked as a host in a restaurant for about a year and a half and in that time, I encountered two instances where people couldn't pay for their food. One was an elderly Gentleman who I managed to snag before he got too far away and brought him back. The manager comped his food and he was allowed to leave. The other instance was a couple who kept drinking alcohol and stayed for about an hour or two after they finished eating because they were being watched before trying to dash out the door. I don't know what happened to them after that but I assumed that they were never allowed back.

Former bartender here! That waitress clearly handled the situation incorrectly. She was told by EM that OP would pay. OP explained that this would no longer be the case. The server didn't want to be at fault for the bill, so she pushed it back on the customers. Grow a backbone! When a customer tells you to split the bill, it is no longer their obligation to pay the other portion. It still amazes me that in these modern times, where everyone wants to jump down your throat for the use of antiquated concepts, THEY still want to uphold the antiquated notion of "The customer is always right!"

16:00 1. The waitress should have confirmed the payment situation with the one paying and not just take the other one's word for it. Especially since the one paying clearly was never present when these conversations about the bill took place. 2. OP should have been more vocal and not just accepted responsibility... not just the last time, but the 2nd time as well. 3. After the waitress witnessed the interaction between OP and EM, they never should have included OP in the police threat. If OP paid her own bill, then she had absolutely nothing to do with EM's bill. Plain and simple. The waitress was 100% in the wrong, but OP also should have spoken up sooner and stood her ground at the end. I would have welcomed the police... not my problem the entitled bitch sitting next to me can't pay her own bill. Not my responsibility in the least.

She used to read the obituary pages (page that announces deaths in the local community or anniversaries of deaths for real known locals) in the local paper and then annouce loudly "Your dad is still not in it! Shame." I told my nana because it used to stress me out to know end as I have nothing against my dad, and she had an absolute go at my mother for it. Mum never did it again.

I was a waitress for two years at a sports bar/restaurant. This was definitely not the right call. What should have been done was to clarify with the nice person if they actually agreed to pay for EM, and if not, let them leave before getting a manager involved and potentially calling the cops on ONLY EM. The other person was not at fault, and that was crystal clear.

I’m a chef & before I went to culinary school I worked all other restaurant jobs, I feel the waitress handled that poorly, I get they were in the same party but if you realize someone has been getting played & has been paying every time without consenting you should stick up for that person, she’s not in the wrong, it wasn’t her stuff, doesn’t matter if they ordered together or not, if you go out & someone hasn’t already stated they will cover you than you should have the money to cover yourself.

As someone who used to be a waitress, the waitress was at fault from the way beginning. The waitress should have clarified if the bill was joint or separate before bringing it out, regardless of what she had previously been told by the NON PAYING party. When she realized she made a mistake the best thing to do is grab a manager... That's what managers are there for. Someone who has not agreed to pay for another person is not responsible for that person.

As a former waiter, if we had to split the bill between two persons, first I would make a reciept when ordered, and every order after it. When was the time of payment they would tell me who pays what, then I would make another reciept for each person with the drinks, they pay, after everything was good and at the end of the shift I would make storno (deleting receipts from day traffic) of the original receipts which were made during ordering. In case of splitting the bill with one side paying their half and the other one wouldn't "because the total was too high" (he/she ordered the expensive drinks. We would basicly have to pay from our own pocket at the end of our shift, it was ordered, it was served, was drinked, and now someone doesn't wanna pay, we have to pay, it counts as minus in cash register. We must have correct amount of money, not more, not less, inspection can come anytime, they give big fines for either "too much/less" money in the register.... problems of the waiter every day, not knowing will he have to pay with his lunch mony someone's drink.

I've worked in restaurants my entire, professional life (age 16 to now 32). With the bill split, and the OP already having paid for what she ordered, the server was 100% wrong to hold her there. Only the EM would be liable for theft.

I’ve been a server and bartender for 6 years. Rule of thumb is to catch a potential issue early so a manager is standing by to jump in if necessary. The server should have confirmed the bill with the other guest before it was brought out and a manager should have been involved in that situation. They don’t want their servers to have to deal with a situation that escalates to that point. I’ve never had this situation happen to me, but knowing how other issues with guests are dealt with, if one person payed for their meal, we wouldn’t hold them there just because the other person didn’t pay.

Worked in restaurant service for 6-7 years doing different positions including being a waitress. That waitress made the wrong call. She should have only looked at the person who didn't want to pay their bill, and told them that if they don't pay they can't leave then proceed to get the manager or general manager to handle the situation. Considering OP asked for the bills to be separate and she had already paid for her meal she should have been allowed to leave. After that it is up to the discretion of the manager if they want to call the police immediately or try to reason with the customer before calling the cops.

My mom just had an interaction with an entitled woman today at work. She works in the shipping office at an apple warehouse. A trucker was loading up, the Quality Control person kicked 12 pallets (49 boxes per pallet) and Karen kicked off. She made my mother call the WSDA (WA State Dept. of Agriculture) and have them send their manager down to look at the fruit. The WSDA manager passed the fruit, so they had to load it back onto the truck. THEN, she made my mom send an email to the QC person's manager, saying he was no longer allowed on property.

When I was a waitress we had people pay FIRST before they get their food unless it was a book in table (when we had their name and number) and our register was RIGHT by the door so we'd just call out "Oh hey you're from table - you haven't paid yet," and they'd normally pay if they didn't we would have to call our manager who sorted it from there.

I've trained service staff on difficult situations with customers for years. In large groups, it is simple. Whoever take the reservations, it would be wise to clear as to who will be payming the bill. In groups size of 10 or less, it is a no-brainer for servers to ascertain right after taking everyone''s orders, as to whether the bill is to be split (and how, if there is). The general rule is, if Diner A, gives instruction in the absence of others, that Diner A will pay; it is fine. In no condition servers were to accept Diner A instructing that Diner B will pay. In this case, it only involves 2 diners. It is simpler. The server can ask Diner B to affirm that is the correct instruction to pay. However, when the group gets bigger, tack is needed - to get Diner B away from the group to ask him/she. In Asia, there is always the perpetual fear of losing face, or coerced into peer pressure to pay for everyone when one doesn;t want to. At times, ascertaining who is the paymaster can upset some guests. Then again, in this case, one will be upset and will never return again as a guest BUT OP might as that's the correct way to handle the situation.
