Quick Review | 2018 Lexus GS350 | Reputation

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We do a quick drive in the 2018 Lexus GS350 AWD to see if the overall package is good enough to recommend. There are many sedans trying everything to get attention these days and with no guaranteed formula the GS may have a hard time in this segment. Despite the solid package, BMW, Audi and more affordable cars from Mazda and Honda will make it harder on Lexus.

    Years ago, Luxury meant engineering quality, refinement, comfort, reliability and craftsmanship. These days, people seem to have become convinced that luxury means bling, gimmickry and layering technology on top. The Lexus is from the old school.

    I'm a 2015 GS-350 F-sport owner (also a 2016 Miata and a Tesla Model 3). Heres some random points: 1. The Sport+ mode in the F-Sport does transform this vehicle into a GOOD handling and driving car. 2. I judge a "Media center" in a car by its sound quality, and Lexus have stellar sound. With a Lexus you can pipe your iPhone audio directly through the USB Port, and get amazing sound quality. The Interface is "janky" but if has lots of powerful connectivity features that other car companies have eliminated. I keep an old iphone with 32GB of HQ music files and control it like an ipod. 3. Lexus cars can be bought with 150k miles, and everything still works like new up to 250k miles. To get out of debt slavery i just started buying high mile Lexus for cash, and stopped paying car loans. 4. Lexus automatics are fantastic for engine braking ... since they are indestructable. 5. The exterior of the GS-350 is fugly, but the interior space is very nice .... Nothing beats Lexus Air Conditioning. 6. Many Lexus parts are cheap due to their association with Toyota, not that you will ever actually need a Lexus part, because they dont break.

    Best post on this video. The point about debt slavery is spot-on and especially appropriate with so many college grads coming out of school with significant debt. I'm also on-board with the pursuit of good sounding OEM audio systems. An owner of a luxury brand vehicle should not need to pour thousands into an after market system to have adequate sound or have to chase the latest smart device connectivity to feel satisfied. USB and BT have worked for years as adequate connection options. And with the size of phablets these days rivaling the in-vehicle screens from just ~4 - 6 years ago, always up-to-date navigation services are readily available.

    Spot on. Bought by 01 gs300 way back when for cash. Coupe more points worth mentioning: 1) RWD gs350 > AWD gs350 in terms of overall driving dynamics due to less weight and less drive train power loss and 2) resale value much higher than MB & BMW, when same size/class compared.

    Better off flying solo. Who is this guy? He seems like he’s all into tech. Massaging seats? What?! People are forgetting about the joys of driving. Relying on tech and driver’s aid. Lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, heads up display. Apple CarPlay. Now the in thing to do is small displacement with turbos plus CVT. Maybe these are all planned, planned obsolescence that is. Making you want to upgrade every three years or so. For those who wants to upgrade every three years, sure lease a German luxury car. But if you like keeping your cars for a long period of time, get a fun reliable normally aspirated none CVT car. And make sure it’s a port and direct injection vehicle. Don’t wanna be worried about carbon build up. Less tech the better. Don’t buy into all the gimmicky stuff. Forget about CUV’s. They are nothing but jacked up compacts. If one has a large family to haul, sure. Get an SUV.

    I don’t understand. Why? Why do you hate the new smaller engines? Now look I used to be the “fuck downsizing” type of guy until I began driving many various cars. Point is the smaller engines are lighter and they do not lose out on power. Also they could easily be efficient when you need them to. So unless you thrash the car on a daily basis or track the car, whats the point? Other than noise and HP pissing contest bragging rights of-course.

    I agree with you the smaller engines are working extra hard to make the power of a V8 and something could go wrong with the turbos in the near future

  • @Jaime7188

    @Jaime7188

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@greaser3069 I've driven numerous cars with downsized 4cyl turbos, and I just can't see the point of them. Sure, they feel peppy down low because of the torque from the turbo, but if you ever out your foot down to overtake on the highway, they take forever to downshift, they still have turbo lag, and there's absolutely no power at the top of the rev range because the turbos are too small to feed enough air at those engine speeds. They're only designed to make you feel like they're powerful in the low to mid rpm range. They will never feel as satisfying as a NA V6 or V8. Also, the fuel economy is no where near as good as advertised on these small turbo engines in the real world. I used to have a Hyundai Veloster turbo that had a 1.6L turbo. It was rated at 36mpg highway. I could never get anything close to that. At best, I'd get 30. The only way I could get 36mpg is if I never exceeded 50mph. Now take my current car a Toyota 86 for example. It's only rated for 30mpg hwy for the manual transmission. This car has a 7400 rpm redline (I had it increased to 7600 rpm) NA 2.0L 4CYL. I can get 35mpg hwy easily while doing 75-80mph with the engine turning 3500rpm. If I were to go only 55mph, it gets 46mpg. Plus there's nothing more rewarding than revving out an engine to make it's max power.

  • @lifted_above

    @lifted_above

    5 жыл бұрын

    Because downsized turbo engines are stupidly complex in comparison, have carbon cake problems, are higher maintenance for equivalent power, and won't be as reliable or inexpensive to maintain in the long haul. Big torque V8, nice tall highway gears for low RPM cruising is often better than some wheezy 4-popper with 30 psi shoved through it and lots of piston ring blow by.

    Mine is a 2015 fsport in obsidian with the peanut butter insides and in my opinion the car is gorgeous and has great lines. The refresh in 2016 made it look hideous without the fsport package. It’s a very reliable, pungent, and sporty driving car in sport+ mode, and they hold up like tanks over time. We’ve had ours since new and it just hit 20k for 2020. Can’t wait to keep her for many more years to come of phenomenal Lexus service, and quality experience.

    As mentioned, the reliability of the model historically has been great. As a used / CPO offering in 3 years after the first lease is done, these things are incredible opportunities -- assuming the infotainment isn't a deal-breaker. I can deal with the hourglass grill on most of the recent Lexus designs, but their headlight and DRL designs are 'unique.'

    Last year I bought a pre-owned 2015 GS 350 w/ 29k miles and I absolutely love it! I didn't opt for the F-Sport model simply because there is minimal performance enhancement as you get the exact same engine, horsepower and torque...both things that mattered the most to me. If you spent thousands more on the F-Sport package you basically get a slightly different exterior bumper, 1" larger wheels (19" vs 18"), slightly larger brakes, shock dampening (pricy to fix when they go bad), a better stereo (Mark Levinson Sound) and some interior and exterior "F-Sport" badges. I just couldn't justify the extra cost. If you like that stuff and think the F-Sport badge looks cool, go for it...just wasn't for me. This is my first Lexus and this car is amazing. It's fast, the engine roars, I do wish it has better sounding exhaust but I can live without that. All-in-all I've had the car for 1-year now and have not had one issue with it, it is EXACTLY what I wanted. Now, if I wanted a real performance GS, I would skip the faux-performance F-Sport package and go with the GSF...but those are a bit on the pricy end, but man do they haul and sound good. Thanks for the video, well done as usual.

    Can't forget about the f-sport seats. I'd argue they are one of the biggest features of the package. I went from a base model gs to an f-sport earlier this year and the difference in seat adjustability is to die for. The 16-way is much more comfortable than the normal 8-way seats.

    Thanks for another excellent review. As the owner of a13 GS350, I can say your takeaway from this vehicle is on the nose. A capable, fast and obviously well-crafted vehicle. You're right about the exterior, um, challenges of the GS, but the refined and spirited ride along with Lexus' build quality more than make up for that. This has been by far my favorite car, and I've owned 3 BMWs (2002 325, 2007 335 and 2012 X5). Loved all of those as well from a driving perspective, but my wallet hated them with a burning passion when the inevitable repair parade began.

    I bought a 2016 F Sport AWD with 38k miles last night week and love the car for what it is - a sporty-ish luxury daily driver that will last as long as I care to keep it. I was looking for a pre-refresh F Sport but couldn’t pass up the deal on this one with the condition/mileage/equipment (ML audio is outstanding). Fuel mileage is, well, nothing to write home about at 18-19 with mixed driving but that N/A V6 sounds glorious.

Better handling is also available in this car with the GS F-Sport trim. Lane Departure Warning and collision warning, all of the latest safety features are also available in this car. I actually find these cars beautiful both inside & outside. I own a white on red 2016 GS350 F-Sport RWD that I bought used almost two years ago with 41k miles for $31k altogether (Original MSRP $58K) & has been an absolutely amazing car for the money & planning on keeping it for a very long time. It replaced a 2017 IS200t F-Sport & is a massive improvement in every way. The ride is on the firm side, especially compared to a 2021 ES350 I had as a loaner recently but does an impressive job at balancing ride & handling & gets even better at highway speeds. I find the infotainment system easy to use as I got used to it very quickly & I far prefer the joystick controller over the newer touchpad. The 12.3 inch display still looks impressive & I love how it's covered by a hood to help blockout sunlight which does a great job. That V6 sounds amazing & is a huge improvement over the turbo 4 which sounds a lot better & is much smoother. I usually see no more than two GS's per day on the road which I love. Overall this car was an amazing purchase especially for a used one & really couldn't ask for a better car!

    I have a '13 F Sport I think these cars looked much better (at least the front end) until 2016 when they went with the full mean-face spindle grill. Plus the F Sport spoiler and shape give it more style. Still not a great looking car but not "fugly" by any stretch. And the drive is a real pleasure. Smooth and quiet in normal conditions, but change the drive mode to Sport + and the car really does come to life. If you're looking for a midsize luxury sedan I think these are great cars to look at in the used market. You'll pay some money for them but as a long-term investment they make a lot of sense..

    Yes, and no. Yes because it won't break on you, but because it won't break on you, it doesn't depreciate as much meaning you'll pay more for this used than a Mercedes, Audi, etc. An equivalent Mercedes will be more expensive new, but cheaper used because of the depreciation and people running for the hills in fear of expensive German luxury maintenance costs.

    @Tim Exactly. What these kvetching chucklefucks, including the ones on screen, fail to note is that nobody gives a damn about them. They don't buy anything expensive; they bitch about everything that's not a sacred 911 or a holy Miata; and they are a tiny, infinitesimal, DYING market segment. If car journalists continue to judge mid-sized sedans by ... track ability (Jesus Christ, really?), they will find themselves preaching to a smaller and smaller audience if irrelevant losers. I say this as a guy who loves sedans. I want a Lexus. I'm not tearing the dash out of my new car to wedge basic communication function into it, though. (Nissan Sentas have goddamn Carplay). Audi, BMW, Merc, hell, even Subaru, saw the light. You're not going to out-develop the two most popular OSes on the planet ... unless maybe you are Tesla. Get the fuck with it, Lexus.

When I took it out on the highway, I did not hear that aggressive growling sound when I hit the gas. The sound right at the beginningof your review. Like they say, buy Lexus, lease German. I recently got a GS350 F-Sport. I am a huge Audi fan boy and every time I drive one, even the A models, I smile and have fun. The styling of Audis also gives me actual feelings. Whenever I see an Audi, I instantly go "Oh baby". The Lexus does not give me any of these feelings. It's relatively fast, and with an aftermarket exhaust, it's relatively fun to drive. It's stable and somewhat heavy feeling and you get a sense of reliability with the car. You never have to worry about something breaking. This is the "grown up" choice of car for those people who want something decently fun to drive, is comfortable, and want a peace of mind. It is not something you get for the pure emotion of driving. And every time I go back to a German car for a bit, I always have a feeling in my heart that's where I really belong, but my mind says Lexus is where I should stay.

  • @Triquetra15

    @Triquetra15

    This is my issue. I feel like the Lexus is a sensible choice, but a compromise for reliability. I can’t bring myself to but a German car due to reliability issues, but I don’t want to spend more money for the Lexus since it doesn’t excite me. I hate when cars aren’t reliable, but I want a fun and safe car to drive. So, currently, I’m weighing my options. I really like the LC 500. It’s expensive, but maybe I could buy it one day. It’s got a V8, the interior is amazing(especially the 2024 model), and I think it would excite me. Of course I would have to get in one first and see for myself.

    The 4th and 5th gen GS350's are exceptionally reliable and great overall vehicles. That is also why they still hold excellent resale value. Lexus really got it right with these vehicles. They are absolutely rock solid, sporty, yet composed and quite to drive. It features an incredibly well engineered V6 motor (no turbos) and strong real 6 speed transmission (no CVT). In 10 years, it will probably need little more than some oil changes and brakes and regular basic maintenance. Having AWD in a rear wheel drive bias luxury mid size sedan is also a big plus. Yes, the infotainment NEEDS to catch up but it's a small price to pay. Given how long it lasts, it's IMO the best luxury mid size value on the road today. It's too bad they are eliminating this vehicle after MY2020.

    @@philly8462 Hi Philly, That seems right in the ballpark for what they are going for...especially one with AWD. I would however not get an AWD model unless you live in a place where you think you will need it. It does work great but it takes more gas and will be more expensive to repair. You should pay what it is worth which takes a little work to determine and some due diligence. Firstly, I would definitely seek out a GS350 that has the ML upgraded stereo system and at least the "Premium package" trim which has heated + cooled seats, a better steering wheel, memory seats and more. "IF" you can find one, get the luxury package- it's incredible...it has all the Premium features, plus acoustic glass (very quiet), really nice rims, power rear sun shade, rear seat controls (stereo and climate) and more. Personally, since you are buying used, I would only buy a Luxury model. It will likely take you months to identify one, but you will be very happy you did. I believe they were offered up to MY2017. Second- I would have a Lexus mechanic go over it thoroughly. It should be put on the Lexus computer (not all mechanics will have deep access to the cars computer- but you could try.) They can also check the history of all repairs- also go over the suspension, drive train, etc. Also run the VIN and check for any other events (floods, mechanical or accident history, etc.) History or proof of regular oil changes is very good to have- when possible. In conclusion- you found a great vehicle. I would take more time, find a LUXURY 2015 or newer GS350 w/or without AWD based on your needs. Ideally, I would find one with 30k miles or less. I believe a well maintained GS can go 200k+ miles if well taken care of but 30k is always better than almost 50k. If you are getting if from a dealer ask them to include an oil change, new tires (if worn), brakes and a 1yr b-b warranty. Good luck!

    Is this hoax legit or not ? It's circulating quite a while on CL, but nobody was able to bring confirmation until now.

    I am going to pick up a pre-predator GS with the luxury package peasant blockers. I could care less about heads up display, lane keep assist or adaptive cruise gimmicks.

    The point about the infotainment being designed on a desk is bang on. I have one of these - if you try to use the infotainment system and drive at the same time, you'll stack it. Just don't.

    My problem with this car and the v6 engine.... Why does it require premium fuel with only 311hp? My 2012 Genesis sedan 3.8L v6 uses regular grade gas and was rated at 333hp. It runs great and shifts excellent with the 8sp automatic. Fuel mileage for the Genesis approx 23mpg city and 28mpg hwy, sometimes better on the highway depending on the speed of travel.

    Man!!! It feels so good to be updated on crap that nobody actually needs and so completely irrelevant to drivers like you Mark and me because i also feel by their opinion in minority as Mark feels to be as well.Reliability that is what is all about and 6 gears are doing it better than ...elevenTEEN or whatever! Lexus is doing it right always and that s why is better than all the rest by far!
