Questions, Coffee & Cars Episode #30 // Why are car dealers this way?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a Motormouth couple car video answering your questions from Instagram like: Have you ever purchased a car you regret? Honda Civic Si or Civic hatch Touring? Mazda CX-5 Turbo or used Mercedes=Benz GLC 300? Is the Acura RDX reliable? Do Eco drive modes actually work? Will the Mazda CX-60 make it to North America? Do you own an EV or PHEV , if not why? Will the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse be worth waiting for? BMW X1M or Mercedes-Benz AMG GLB 35? Why is everyone afraid to speak up about dealership practices? Do you think people are just buying what they can get over wiating for the car they want? Toyota Grand Highlander, Lexus TX 500h or Chevrolet Tahoe? Volvo V60, Genesis G70 or Cadillac CT5?

It’s so short sighted of a dealer to treat a customer badly. Treat a customer badly, and you lose their business for the next “forty” years, as well as any possible business from their friends and associates, when they badmouth your business. As a “car guy”, I have influenced dozens of sales over my life. So definitely don’t screw with a car guy, or a KZreadr who influences 1000’s of purchases, like Zack and Andrea. 😊

I have been a Toyota person all my life. Always felt taken advantage of by their dealership in Toronto Canada but dealt with it because of the perceived reliability, even having every oil change minimum $300 because there was always something else. Then I moved to the USA in Cincinnati went to Toyota and was treated like crap at the height of COVID. No cars for 12 months and no willingness to help. Then I came across this gentleman at VW Beechmont and he went out his way to find me a car, didn’t mark up, helped me get a lease being new to the country. The car is excellent, maintenance is oil change only 2 years in, reliable and fuel efficient (Tiguan) Mr Kevin has a customer for life. Helped me when no other dealership would. Toyota lost a life long customer.

I don’t have an investment in your story, but could you elaborate on “treated like crap” a bit more. I ask as during the height of the pandemic, supply collapsed and demand was far higher than it causing a severe shortage in new and used cars. 12 months was pretty good back then and they couldn’t make them appear out of nowhere. In the States they don’t have the same rules as in Canada and they could markup car prices if their state laws allowed it, so that was pretty good deal paying retail. Dealers of all brands often take advantage of customers as they tend upsell non mandatory services and it Gary’s by dealership, not brand. After years of pleasant service a one Hyundai dealership, my wife tried another for convenience, and this turned out to be a big mistake. Typically we would service our cars at the Hyundai dealership while under warranty. I know it wasn’t needed but it might mean less issues if a warranty claim popped up. My wife went into this other dealership for an oil change and they pressured her on a bunch of other services and made up repairs. She knew that the oil change was the only thing required and she contracted Hyundai about and they told her the same thing. They claimed her brakes were “shot” even though it only had 30k on them. She called me and I told to decline and we will take it to our local mechanic just in case but told her to speak to the service manager and I ask him why would they be worn out s quickly. Ky wife asked it in a way which caused the manager to back pedal very quickly on the subject. That experience has stopped us from using the dealership for anything but recalls.

I also had a good experience with a VW dealership during inventory shortage. The car I ordered had an MSRP increase on my model and year after I ordered it. VW honored the old MSRP on my car and the dealership also honored the old MSRP when they probably could have tried adding a market adjustment or dealer add-ons. They also gave me periodic updates while I was waiting for delivery. Shoutout to Stephen from Olympia VW in Olympia, WA.

Funny...(grab another coffee because this is a long one!) I was just listening to one of the local radio stations here in Toronto and one of the radio hosts was talking about their recent horrific experiences with a dealer. She needed a car immediately to get to work so when they saw an ad for what they were looking for at a decent price they immediately contacted dealer who told them they had what she was looking for, her and her husband rushed to the lot to buy it. However, when they got there and started the process, they were informed that the car was $5000-$6000 dollars more because of dealer extras that were added. The couple were pissed because they didn't want any of it. (Tint, protective film coating, etc.) Despite their adamantly trying to refuse these extras, dealer said it was already "in the system" to be added so too late. She needed the car asap so finally agreed. Here's the kicker...dealer then said they had to leave car with them to have these options added so they could pick up car in THREE WEEKS! That's when the husband flipped because they told dealer wife needed car for work. So, to make a long story longer, they come back on the scheduled day, three weeks later to pick up car, get in the car and notice that nothing had been done. Dealer was like "Oops". They had to leave car for a second time. On a happier note, after much fighting (aka negotiations), the dealer finally agreed to refund them the $5000. (I think drug dealers have better reputations than most car dealers.) Just say'n.

Kudos on 30 QC&C's. Always insightful. Totally agree that dealerships can be hit or miss. Even within one dealership, you can sometimes find a fair salesperson - stick with him/her. Loyalty is a 2-way street! Another recommendation. During the purchasing process, get to know the Service Director as well. You will need that person to be on your side at one point. Keep up the good work Andrea and Zack!

Had to smile when you mentioned how salespeople look at you if they think you can’t afford a car. Walked into a Toyota dealership after playing Pickleball one morning. Stopped because it was on my way home and wanted to put money down to order a Venza. I had already done my research and knew what I wanted. Three salespeople looked at me, two actually stepped back and the third one asked if I needed help. Needless to say I put the money down and two weeks ago my Venza arrived went in and paid cash and walked out. The salesman that helped me out was great and I got the vehicle at MSRP with no add ons. Worked for me and the salesman that didn’t judge me by the way I was dressed. Actually I was dressed pretty nice for pickleball. 😂

Our province has only one Subaru dealership. It’s where we bought all our cars…almost. Because of lowball trade offers on a car we had, we were forced to purchase from a dealership in another province. Even with driving there, dropping off the trade and coming back we got 2 grand more for the trade. That was five years ago. Last summer I was ready to go out of province again and I let them know that. Lessons learned by the dealership last time kept us from going out of province for our last purchase last summer. You just have to know when to walk away from the dealership if you’re not happy. You need let them know that and that you won’t be back if that type sales service continues.

Dealership is key when buying a car. Ownership sets the tone. Mini Countryman has an eco mode. They say it will add about the mileage you get for a gallon., which takes in account your driving manner, I found this to be about right. But a few more miles and a lot less FUN.

I was VERY briefly a car salesman at a VW dealership in NJ and Acura dealership in Delaware. I was between teaching jobs during the 2010 recession. Worst experience of my life. At VW I was screamed at by the manager and threatened to be fired if a customer walked out without seeing a car. Acura did bait and switch with my customers.

Thank you for bringing up this topic. I recently bought a 2023 Golf R, and wow, the experience is worse than it has ever been. Not only do you have to find the car, but you have to negotiate to get closer to the sticker, and they don't care if you don't buy it. With that said, you can't even get a test drive on some models. The buyers need to work harder than ever to find a car at the right price. Unfortunately, unless the manufacturers change their business model, nothing is going to change. There are some good dealers, and you need to work harder than ever before to find a good one.

I even went to a different dealer than the one I had a relationship with, because I assumed (incorrectly) that they would appreciate my business!! Excellent episode per the usual arrangement! 19:07 - I sure hope those days are coming back. I get that having less inventory probably means a higher transaction price per vehicle at the dealership, but at some point manufacturers will (I hope) be cranking out enough units that I *could* go to the dealership and pick from the red, blue, or green one. Each factory surely has an optimum quantity of cars they can build, and unless it's a Telluride, which apparently is only built in one place and that factory is already running three shifts, volume has to slowly come back. The manufacturer makes more money the more units they push off the assembly line, so I would *think* that they would want to build as many units as possible. Of course if the model is not selling well (I'm looking at you Toyota Crown) the dealer will do their best to keep the runts of the litter to a minimum. And there are other factors I'm not talking about (and some I don't know!) but that's my opinion on this. I hope I'm right, we'll find out 🙂

Glad you did. My purchase of a Genesis GV70 in 2022 was my worst experience in 38 years of car ownership. I agree with Zack that it all comes down to training and ownership mentality. Test drive and all the help leading to order was great. After order placed, downhill fast. The sales staff at the dealership in eastern Ontario were poor communicators after the deal was done, no responses to emails, and the sales staff outright lied, in writing, regarding commitments on pricing of the Genesis and my trade, lies that the sales manager never acknowledged or responded to after asking for the emaiI proof and my sending to him. I don't care about no haggle...not why I bought Genesis . I have bought every car since 2000 over the phone in one morning...whichever dealer meets my price has my business and I have always met my price goal. Love the car and so far service has been decent, but not sure I would buy another simply because of of the poor sales experience with the only Genesis dealership in the city and within any reasonable distance.

In 2015 I was shopping for a new econo sedan for my wife, went to the Nissan dealer in Richmond, BC, Canada, and said I'd like to test drive their Sentra BUT I wouldn't allow him to photocopy my licence, as I saw a news story that said dealers use that info to check your financial status and then use that to their advantage while bargaining. I would show him the licence so he knew I had a valid one and not to worry about allowing me to test drive the vehicle. He flat out refused, got in a huff, so I went around the corner to the Honda dealer, and my wife ended up with a new Honda Civic Touring model, which she's ridiculously happy with. Customer service is such a simple concept, it's amazing that dealers and salespeople who are pushing $50k products don't get that.

I’ve tried to talk everybody going into the dealership to going to a credit union first. They’ll get you the best rates and be more honest. Dealerships hate hearing you’re cover on financing already. Makes it that much easier to walk away and go to the next one willing to working with you.

Toyota and honda in the usa northeast have zip on their lots (mostly used and a few ICE vehicles only) and are shooting themselves in the foot as people let their $ talk and go elsewhere. .

I don’t know quite how to interpret it except that it’s a sign of the poor environment of many dealerships and the lack of consistency for buyers and building relationships. Often even the sales manager was gone within a couple years too.

If you're a smooth driver, eco mode will have little impact on fuel economy. It typically reduces throttle response but a smooth driver can get the same effect with gentle acceleration and coasting part way to stops.

When I was about 22 years old, my family and I went to a Toyota dealership and as my parents were looking around I saw this Toyota convertible car. I was just looking at it but the sales guy came up to me and said “hey you like this car? it’s not for you. You won’t be able to get something like this.” … Which I guess he meant that I looked really young and the car was obviously out of my price range. But my dad overheard the conversation, walked up and said “It’s OK. We’re gonna go with Lexus instead”. .. And nobody in my family to this day drives a Toyota…. But that grand Highlander does look really good. Lol….. And yes we knew then Toyota and Lexus were the same thing. .. But my parents were not giving that dude any commission.😂 … My dad later said to me “never act like that in life”. 😉

We walked into the dealership and no one greeted us, no one approached us. After standing around for 5 minutes, we walked out and told all of our friends about this experience. None of friends have gone to this dealership. Unfortunately, both Audi dealerships in my city are have the same owners. Not a great experience with Genesis dealership located in western Canada. No haggle price is a joke. Changed price after ordering 2023 GV70 after 2 months waiting. Interestingly still advertised 2023 price. Then oh we (Genesis) changed the finance rate quoted 2 months ago. Again it still advertised online at the lower rate. I am not sure its a national vs local dealership problem. I agree with comments, not just buying a car, its service for me as well. Disappointing process compared to the 3 new Hyundai vehicles where I treated quite well. Hopefully others had better experience.

Great episode. On the eco mode I had similar results in my 2.0 Ecoboost. I get better economy in normal mode than eco mode. I think it’s on me- I expect a certain throttle response and was pushing the pedal harder to get it thereby eliminating any savings. That’s my theory lol I think eco mode should automatically switch to normal under hard gas pedal then back to eco once pedal pressure releases.

Regarding using eco mode, I have tried eco, normal, and sport with my 2021 M340i XDrive and without a doubt get the best gas mileage in normal mode. Sport keeps higher gears so gets worse gas mileage but the problem with eco is your foot is into the pedal much more often to get up to speed or keep speed. That just kills your gas mileage. And what I’ve found is this is true in most vehicles though if cruising on the freeway and eco mode goes into a higher gear over normal (which it doesn’t in my car), then it might do better on the freeway. Mine does not.

Off topic, sort of. Ive owned a 2003 BMW Z4 as a first titled owner (dealer owner car / demo vehicle). No problems until recently when the convertible top "motor" crapped out. Poor design as it's located where external water can drain causing issues. Otherwise nice car. Bought it because we were able to get nearly 40% off MRSP.

2020-2023 ID4 is garbage. Don't touch them. They just fixed a whole bunch of issues with the ID4 in the coming model year. New software, new stereo, new motors, a lot more HP and better efficiency, folding mirrors, ventilated seats, different shifter, heat pump.... I wouldn't touch the first three years of the ID4 ever.

You keep recommending the Civic hatch, and i somewhat agree with you (like the practicality / layout / reliability but some things I really don't like including its Accord size & price), but i have yet to see a single one on the road since they came out with the redesign. Why are car buyers not convinced of your recommendation? Is it an availability issue? Is the price / value that much of a turnoff for buyers? I think i might have answered my own question.

I wish I could bring Andrea and Zack with me to the car dealerships, I don't know how to haggle and I know these 2 would be brilliant. I'm trying to buy a luxury vehicle, BMW was actually VERY nice and treated me well on test drives, as was Alfa Romeo, very nice folks, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet on anything as I don't know how to haggle with the price, or if haggling is even done these days? Or do you just pay the sticker price? So stressful and intimidating.

No haggle, just like Saturn did? What a joke, they totally took advantage of people that thought they were getting a good price when in fact they were paying full price with high margins built in for the dealer. The auto industry built in the negotiating process, not the consumer.

I'm a little confused by one of your comments. You said that some folks are waiting to long for a RAV4 hybrid and decided to purchase the Cr-V hybrid, even if it means paying more. The stats I looked at today shows, over 15000 rav4s are in stock or in transit while there are only 7733 Cr-Vs available. Those numbers don't seem to match the consumer sentiment that there are no Toyotas available anytime soon. This is in the U.S.

It seems that most of the cars you discuss on these segments (QCC) cost more than $50k (some a lot more). Is this a reflection of the questions submitted or of your selection process. I enjoy hearing about the luxury brands, but I would guess that most of your listeners could never afford such expensive models. Thoughts?

I love you guys, but you keep mentioning that Volvo is near the bottom for reliability scores, but say nothing about Mercedes, which is ranked lower, in the same video, or Audi, which is the worst of the 3. Acura is barely any better in that same study. Just something I noticed. I'm biased, because I'm a Volvo owner and have had a trouble free experience. But, I've also owned an Audi and had no problems at all. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I think if you keep pointing out Volvo's "unreliability" it should be the same for the other luxury brands.

Regarding dealerships, I think toyota is one of the worst, after granville toyota took my $1000 deposit, there has been crickets even when I was texting questions and if I could put down another $1000 deposit to wait for 2024 prius prime. No text back, nothing at all for 6 months already. They simply don't care, maybe because I want to buy it cash instead of finance/lease so they can't gouge me with 9% interest but at least don't ignore me like a homeless... honestly its their lost, I was planning to get 2 or more toyotas from them eventually for the whole family, now I'm looking at other options so I don't need to deal with this anymore.

If one is going to lease it, then You can go with any car because you are giving it back, but if you are financing or purchasing out right, I don't know if many people will be happy with taking a bath with constant trips to mechanics after the warranty is up.
