Questions, Coffee & Cars Episode #26 // The end of Apple and Android?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a Motormouth couple car video and answering your questions from Instagram, like: Will Apple Carplay and Android Auto be a thing of the past? When will you get to drive the Alpha Romeo Tonale? When will the Toyota Venza get a refresh? Do you think a RWD EV with good winter tires is okay for a Canadian winter? Any update on a new Toyota Camry? Can you suggest a good manual transmission car that won't break the bank? Hyundai Palisade or Honda Pilot? Should I swap a 2017 Porsche Macan for a 2019 Porsche Cayenne? Will a mk7 or mk8 GTI ride better than a mk5 version? Why are all EVs crossovers, there are no real SUV looking EVs? How come you say the Mazda Cx-5 has a frim ride and Consumer Reports does not? How to not get sick driving an EV? Kia Sportage hybrid or Dodge Durango?

Haha, EVs can and do make people sick. My wife is VERY sensitive and we took Tesla off the list after our first test drive. In fact after that test drive, both my wife and I was so sick, we went home and went straight to bed. Then I learned about Chill mode from my barber and then decided to try it again. Huge difference. To make sure, we rented a Tesla and after a bit we learned how to drive it. We purchased a Model Y and really like it…no issues with getting sick. Also, the trick to one pedal driving is to feather the accelerator and not just dump it. I can drive mine smooth as butter. Love one pedal driving but it takes practice, just like driving a manual. In the old days when I first got a manual, I made people sick too.

Love the series. I understand what you are saying about just logging into the apps to get them to work however, they all use data. The reason for having them streamed from your phone (Apple Car Play and Android Auto) is that your phone plan supplies the data and the car is just a terminal. If you just log into the car, as you say, where does the data come from? The car now has to have a built-in modem to communicate and if it has apps physically on its system, it now has to have some sort of security built in as now it is housing passwords for those apps. Your phone had all that already built-in and regularly updated to protect your privacy. I hope they have thought of that.

One pedal driving is fine if you've driven a manual transmission all of your life. A manual driver would select the gear that makes the experience less jarring. This is why the paddles selecting the resistance on the Hyundai and Kias awesome. Pick the regen that fits the speed you are driving.

My wife and I are currently in the process of buying new. We are all over the place. We also are doing this on line, using the email negotiation tactics, that I found on the world wide web!! We are test driving them all though, incognito(before the emails) So we have it down to VW 2024 Jetta GLI, KIA Seltos 2024, Honda civic sedan, 2024, Chevy Trax 2024, Toyota Corolla Hybrid, Hyundai Kona NLne 2024, and the Subaru Crosstrek 2024, and MazdaCX30(new)...LOL This is fun!! So which would you guys choose??? I know, all over the place. Looking for comfort, fun, economy , basically everything for a decent price!!! OMG...I would love you guys to talk about this on your next coffee and cars. And my personality disorder, it seems..lol Oh...we are in rural Manitoba, harsh winters, hwy drivers. THanks I love your show, and we have both been fans of you guys for a really long time!! lol yes, we know.

I would argue that the exception would be Audi. Their infotainment is pretty solid and user friendly. Mercedes is great too once you get used to it. It’s just not as user friendly right away. BMW is getting better but Volvo, Lincoln, Maserati, Lexus, Cadillac, Land Rover, Tesla are not great infotainment wise at least as of this moment. The screens are laggy and buggy. IMO

We were at the Toyota dealership in Richmond last week to ask about the possibility of a plug-in Venza. The dealer we spoke to said they just can't get any Venza's and they really want them. He said that right now, they don't see any coming in for the rest of 23 and most likely 24. The demand is so great, production is tight and the majority of the Venzas end up in the US. Just sharing what we were told. It was interesting that inside the Toyota dealership, of the 7 vehicles on display, only one was new (a Corolla GR). All the others were used. They just can't get new cars or they were already sold. The same can't be said of other dealerships. The Ford dealership had 9 plug-in hybrid Escapes. We were shocked. They Hyundai dealership also had a lot of new cars. Interesting times still.

Another great show. It's great if manufacturers want to use Android Automotive for their infotainment systems, but don't take away the option to use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto! There are advantages: 1. No need to pay for an extra data plan for your car. 2. Automatic synching of music and podcasts when you get in and out of your car. 3. Don't need to hassle with logging into apps on the car's infotainment system, which is especially helpful when you rent or borrow a car. It's interesting that the Acura ZDX EV, which will be built by GM on GM's platform, will have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the GM versions will not. So, GM is making a deliberate choice not to offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, even though the Android Automotive infotainment software is capable of supporting it. Seems like a good reason to opt for the ZDX.

Yeesh! Didn’t know that… I just bought my first Cadillac (brand new, even!) last year and have been so excited by it, and loving it. And I’d love to buy a fresh one in another year or two. But, CarPlay is amazing and compliments the manufacturer’s infotainment system quite nicely. I’ve always loved Acuras, so I may have to buy one next time instead, if they will keep CarPlay. If GM should take anything from this comment, it’s that I’m willing to (reluctantly, sadly, in a pissed-off way) throw the Cadillac experience in the trash, but I’m not giving up the conveniences of my iPhone. Acura makes very nice cars, and I thought they didn’t deliver enough value for the dollar compared to Cadillac, but perhaps I’m re-thinking it now.

I have a 2023 Volvo C40 (a BEV) that uses Android Automotive (AA). I've read that early versions of AA had some bugs, but I've not encountered a single one since I took delivery of the car in January of this year. One big advantage of AA is that we can expect that Google will continue to improve it and offer new features. By contrast, many manufacturers stop improving their infotainment systems after a period of time.

Purchased a Volvo V60 CC 6 months ago, after a month with the infotainment system I have grown very found off of it. However, as Zach stated it is buggy as sometimes some functions don't also work as expected. Typically just restarting the car fixes it and one time I had to do a soft reset. At least they are sending out OTA updates with enhancements and fixes every couple of months.

My 2019 BMW X1 has an excellent infotainment system. Unless you had added when Apple Carplay when you ordered the vehicle you can't add it. However my wife who isn't techy doesn't care about this and I have the new Samsung Galaxy S23 plus and if I connect it through the USB I can play music that's saved on my cellphone or even some apps. However I find that Bluetooth works best and the sound quality is pretty good. I also have a sub to Sirius XM and love the way the system shows the album covers. The newer BMW systems allow you to watch videos too, however only when the vehicles are parked. I love their new infotainment system in the new X1 with the huge curved screen and optional HUD with its augmented reality. Personally I believe BMW has one of the best systems out there. On a side note, a close friend of mine just bought a new Honda Civic sport and the infotainment system didn't have any of those systems or even Sat radio. Strange! I test drove a car that my friend rented from Turo, a new Hyundai Ioniq 6 and man was it fast! By flipping the left paddle next to the steering column, it activates 3 modes of the regen braking system, there are 3 settings; no regen, mild regen and high regen. When the regen is active, as soon as you take your foot off the accelerator pedal, the brake lights go on. I didn't like either of the regen modes. I also didn't like the weird sound effects that you can program. The new Ioniq 5N is a monster however it's very expensive too. I'm not a fan of the hybrids because it introduces 2 already complex systems however if they work well it's fine. However I know someone that has a 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE and right after 4 years and just about 60K kms, the "Brake Boost/Master Cylinder failed and is not covered by the power train warranty. The Toyota dealers are the only ones qualified to change this part and it costs a whopping $8K to repair. They had to call Toyota to complain about this. I have never ever had to spend that kind of money to repair ANY of my vehicles and I'm over 60 and have owned so many cars in my lifetime to date that I have lost track. We were always a 2 car family and even a 3 car family at one point. Plus I own a sports car. So after calling Toyota, they discounted the repair by $3k but that's still a lot! They joined the APA and APA has free legal advice to sue Toyota in small claims court. Imagine that Toyota told them that they needed to sue the dealership! Toyota knows that they have this problem and because of a class action law suit which they lost they had to include this part in their power train warranty! This is important to note because if this system fails, a lot of lights go on on you dash and you will have a lot off difficulty stopping your car! Keep up the great reviews! Been a fan and a sub for a long time! Congratulations on 300K Subs! 🙂

Manufacturers in-car entertainment will always suck because they don not get updated nearly as often as phone software, and more than likely car makers(or dealers) will try to charge for such updates or upgrades to the system. Plus the system is an after thought! Not like they are going to that many dedicated software engineers just for the infotainment to keep it constantly up to date, bug free and deal with software vulnerabilities and patch them as often as smart phone makers have to, compared to the other more important software systems in the car.

Seems like we are taking two steps back after taking one step forward. Android Auto and Apple Carplay were huge improvements over the in-car systems. Remember the nightmare of having to update the GPS maps of the past? Expect the same thing except now it will be for the apps. Even if you can use the play store, what happens when the latest spottily app does not work with the in-car system and the there are no OS updates? Will they be supporting updates to the in car system for 5+ years? I can always buy a new phone or even load my own software, no issues, no limits.

Hi Guys..always a great & informative show. Since 1995, I've only had Honda Accords. In 2020, when I jumped to a 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec V6 (Red Edition), the GPS was awful. So, I'm using a Garmin DriveSmart 6" (free Maps & free Traffic). I don't use my iPhone because the interface with Apple CarPlay was questionable. Now Garmin gets accurate Traffic using the DriveSmart APP & reports from the use of Cloud technology for free. My iPhone is now my digital speedometer courtesy of the Garmin DriveSmart APP too. This GPS has gotten us out of all kinds of road hazards & traffic. My fellow DriveSmart users seem to keep the information coming. It's my understanding that Honda/Acura has changed the GPS in all the vehicles to a Garmin based unit. The downside is updates are only available through the Dealer. I'll bet traffic is also an additional fee. I'd like to know what you know about this change with all Honda/Acura products. Thanks for your opinion.

I drove my ‘02 Honda Civic LX for 18 years and just bought a brand new 2023 Honda Civic Touring this year. It’s a beautiful car and I’m super happy with it. My only real complaint is how big it is. Holy moly! Civics are supposed to be SMALL! The current 11th gen Civic is now the size of a ‘90s Accord. 😱🤯 And the current Accords are huge! I need to go test drive a Mini. Too bad they’re expensive to maintain and not reliable… Otherwise, I’d buy one in a heartbeat. Super cute too!

Also, if you're going to drive a gas-guzzling SUV, you might as well go all out. In the case of the Durango/"Badongo", get the SRT. Should also add that the car makers loathe that tech companies are getting all the driving data through Carplay/Android but are not being compensated for it. So some car makers are pushing back and forcing buyers to interact with their own in house infotainment and navigation system to keep such valuable data in house. It partially explains why Tesla is more valuable than all the legacy car makers, combined.

That CarPlay/Android Auto is getting stupid. Will we have to pay for a full infotainment? Of course, we will. BMW is now making people pay to activate the seat warmers, they’ll certainly not pass on making you pay to play your music. My favourite infotainment? VW Up!. It’s just a phone holder to connect your phone that’s already, when you think about it, a perfectly acceptable screen. Too small? Yeah, you bet. That’s making you keep your eyes on the road, which is good news. I mean, it’s a car: not a living room.

I can add any app to Android Auto, no limits. I can use the Play store, or load the apps manually. I do not see the same flexibility with the built in unit. Worse yet, I do not see car manufacturers providing updates for greater than 5+ years without charging large amounts of money, if updates are provided at all. Remember updating the GPS maps of the older gen units? What happens when the latest Spotify app needs the latest android OS to function? Can't install an aftermarket radio in most cars now. New car? Phones on the other hand are easier to update and replace. You will always have the latest OS.

I had a friend who's "phone" died, not battery, just crashed and died. Navigation then? Ooops, none in the car!! That said, I have been in other Brands of cars, who's Navigation truly sucks, so, in my view, it is really a matter of (1) what YOU want, and (2) which Brand of Car you like & their Navigation. Great job as always guys.
