Freddie always sang at a lower range while in concert to save his vocal chords from straining so that he could finish every show. But on the albums he used his full high range to give it his all.

Freddie Mercury could sing anything and make me shiver at the beauty and feel in awe at how talented these four artists were when they created music together.

The line that goes "My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies", brings tears to my eyes every time. This is my favorite song by Queen. Such a powerful message, and the power in Freddie's voice is almost more than I can handle without breaking down. I LOVE THIS BAND!!

Freddie, like all the greats, never held back. He always gave everything that was in him in whatever performance he was giving. He refused to settle and it was anathema to him to do anything that was merely passable. In his own way he was very generous. To his audience he was the most generous. Queen, unlike so many artists today, actually did love their audience. There was no elitism, snobbery, condescension, or patronization. The audiences loved him and the band, and they genuinely love their fans and audiences. This is what makes them legendary and what makes Freddie's passing so sad. The world is always impoverished when lovers pass on. The remaining members of the band have been blessing us with their music to this day.

This isn't a bash, if you don't know, you don't know. Freddie's voice sounds "a bit thin" because he was dead within 6 weeks of this song's release. He was catastrophically ill at this point in his life. As the story goes, he saw what Brian had written with all the vocal changes, all the high notes, everything this song is, said "you want e to sing that?" Took a shot of vodka. And belted out this masterpiece in ONE TAKE.

IIRC, when Freddie turned up to record his part, according to Brian, he looked so dreadful (one reason why they never recorded a video for this) that Brian was seriously concerned Freddie was pushing himself too much. He asked Freddie "Fred, do you think you can do this?" Freddie retorted "Of course I can fucking do this, darling!", then downed the shot of vodka and recorded his part in just one take. According to Brian May, Freddie just slew it.

Freddie was a magical being. So glad we still have him through videos.

Brian May wrote this song with Freddie in mind. While Freddie never complained or seemed depressed, Brian said that when he wrote this he envisioned a sad clown who painted his face with a smile to entertain his audience. Brian seems to be a very empathetic person and that certainly comes through in the lyrics of this song. This message is so powerful and became an anthem for so many during the pandemic and long lockdown. I think some of the sadness in this song is what Brian himself, is feeling as he is facing the inevitable end of Queen and his inherent need to continue to make music. All just my take, I have little conformation on any of it other than Brian's thoughts about the clown,

From things I’ve heard Brian say that his father also died around the same time as Freddie. He was very depressed. I don’t know if you’ve listened to Mother Love. He was taping it and he was extremely I’ll at that point. He said he was to tired. He said he would finish it next time. He never came back. Brian finished the song.

Okay so yes this is the song Brian was talking about! Yes Brian wrote this about Freddie’s sickness and the end of his life which was not long after this. Freddie was so sick at the time of this recording, he couldn’t stand, he had to be propped up against a console with the mike near him. How he was able to sing with so much power is nothing short of his own power to force himself to do his best.

You're so right. Its a powerful haunting anthem! If you don't ever cry then "these are the days of our lives" will bring you to the verge I'm sure.

I'm going to regret staying up late to watch your videos, but I'm enjoying them so much. Freddie's music means the world to me and has helped me get down many dark winding roads. Freddie loved his fans and I know he would be thrilled to know there are still people becoming new fans every day. I was told you die twice. Once when your body stops and again when your name is said for the last time. If that's true, Freddie will never be truly gone. I believe his music and love will transcend time. You are an amazing young man. Keep rocking ✌

Just about crying! You're allowed to and it's nothing to be ashamed. When I heard on the radio about Freddies death, I had to stop my car and cried for about half an hour. I was 19 this time and still would do today. For every member of the band. And this times will come... Also Your's and mine...

I will give it my all. And he did. He sang, I think, some of the best vocals of his life on that track, and most of the tracks on that album are incredible. He really was getting very weak by that time, but he could still summon up that strength to sing.” Freddie was a musician and performer from top to toes.

Freddie was literally dying. He could barely stand up. Shot of vodka to dull the pain. While there was obviously a lot of production that went on afterward, but Freddie's vocals were done in a single take.

Trevor....you have given the BEST, in depth reaction I have EVER heard from ANY reactor to this song. You are obviously an intelligent, insightful and caring human being. I always get emotional when I listen to this song. Seeing this video with the clips of Freddie's fantastic, magical career on stage and snippets of Freddie engaging with his friends and bandmates makes it even more emotional for me. The song itself is brilliantly composed and arranged...and Freddie is giving his full voice not only to this song, but to his brothers in Queen and to all of US as well. As Brian and Roger said in interviews after Freddie passed, Freddie told them to keep writing songs and he would sing them as long as he was able . And he told them that, after he passed, they could do whatever they wanted to do with the songs with one caveat: "Never make me boring". In listening to the albums produced by Queen after Freddie passed - but filled with the recordings Freddie made while he was still alive - I think Brian, Roger and John fulfilled that promise to their friend - they never made him boring. This song makes me cry every time! Thanks for all the reactions. Early Queen (up to the third album) shows a harder side to them. Might want to try "Keep Yourself Alive, My Fairy King, Liar live at the Rainbow could go on forever.

BTW never too late to go back to the beginning of the Queen discography and go through the albums song by song and react to the ones you haven't heard yet. Lots of hidden gems on the albums that many people are not familiar with and it gives you a real sense of their diversity and growth over the years and the changes in Freddie's voice. And interspersing any live version of a particular song works well also to compare to the album version.

I definitely love your Queen reactions, this song is an anthem really, written by Brian for Freddie even though he didn't know if he could sing it. The last song Freddie sang was "Mother love", unfortunately he couldn't finish it because he felt bad and didn't return to the studio after that, being finished by Brian after Freddie's death. I recommend a reaction because it is incredibly beautiful despite being sad 💔❤️

Check out mother love. While Freddie wrote the lyrics to show must go on, Brian wrote the music. But mother love on the made in heaven album, is the very last song song they recorded (Brian had to do the last verse because Freddie passed before it was finished) . The first verse of the song, Freddie goes full power, the sign of a consummate professional, and the entire ALBUM made in heaven were all done ONE TAKE EACH

One Year of Love is a great song from the Highlander trilogy of Who Wants to Live Forever, It’s a Kind of Magic, and One Year of Love.

I was at Wembley stadium in July 1986 for one of the last live performances that Queen ever did and the best I ever went to. Freddie was a force of nature and, for me, the best front man of any band, ever.

There was no video or live performance for this song as Freddie Mercury was too ill by then. The song I'm Going Slightly Mad was written by Freddie alluding to the effects of his AIDS medications and shows him so thin, the song Those Were the Days of Our Lives written by Roger Taylor seems so fitting for Freddie and is the last video he made and terribly ill looking despite all of the make up. The final song he sang (and didn't finish so Brian May sang the last verse) was Mother Love--it was written mostly by Brian and is very much what Freddie was going through at the end (I read an interview by Brian that seemed to indicate the song obliquely referred to Freddie's long time relationship with Mary). That song definitely brings tears to the eye but do not watch the video--it has nothing to do with the song and was made by some students and really detracts from the emotional lyrics.

It's the last song on the last album released in his lifetime. The band wasn't sure he'd be able to sing it, so they told him it was okay if he sang part of it and came back to do more later. He took a swig of vodka and said "I'll f**kig kill it, darling," and did it in one take.

About 5.28 minutes into to this song, hearing "outside the dawn is breaking, but inside in the dark, I'm aching to be free" Now that is chilling, but so poignant.

Trevor, Freddie’s real goodbye songs were These are the Days of our Luves and Mother Love. I know this one is involved in his last years, even after he could no longer tour or make this video, and this particular video didn’t really capture the strength if his vocals, IDK why, but I heard a better video this morning, the official one, Freddie sounds fantastic and very strong vocally, though I feel you can hear pain in his voice. I love this song, it’s one of my favorites and always has been. Thanks for the reaction.

Freddie had a vocal range that spanned four octaves -- bass low F (F2) to soprano high F (F6). He could belt up to tenor high F (F5). He reached the elusive D6, his highest note, on several occasions. Freddie was a graphic artist before his singing career. He drew the famous Queen logo. The term multi-talented comes to mind but is somehow inadequate in describing Freddie.

He did go on even though he was at the end of his life. Freddie kept singing until just before he died. Also he had a drink of vodka to keep him going but sounded just as good as he always had.

Alot of people think this is Freddie's goodbye song, it's not. that song was called "was it all worth it" on the previous album. This song was written by Brian May, this is Brian saying goodbye to his dear friend, committing to carry on without him.

I think 'Mother Love' is the track which always breaks me, "give me peace before I die." It is hauntingly beautiful. Freddie sang each line three times, but got too tired to finish all the verses. Brian finishes the song for him and you can hear how difficult it must have been for him. 💔💔💔

To think Freddie recorded this while he was near the end of his life is incredible and still holds up. He is still very sadly missed and we can only imagine what great material he could have been producing if he was around today.

Contrary to legend, Brian is not the sole author of the lyrics of this song since Freddie wrote the first verse.

Queen, far and away, is my favorite band ever. I never got to see them live, though i wanted to. And Freddie's death gutted me completely. It hit me harder than any celeb's death, ever. I've said it before about this song and will say it again; this was Freddie''s goodbye to us mere mortals. We still love and miss you, Freddie. Even after all these years.

I have watched this video hundreds of times and end up in tears every time. He was so brave. You can't really explain to people now what AIDS was like. There was no HIV positive, no treatments and it was killing so many people. When Rock Hudson (google him) died, that was a loss for my Mom's generation. (although she will still argue that he wasn't gay). But when Freddie died... that was my generations hero. 😢✌

fun fact, brian may is the one who wrote the song, aka the lead guitarist. he made the song while freddy was slowly getting worse from his condition of aids. the thing was, the song was about freddy being strong through it all, wanting to sing songs until his last days. he could hardly stand when they recorded this song, freddy downed a shot of vodka and said he'd be able to do it. he did. IN ONE TAKE.

This song is 100% about Freddie being near death. Freddie and Brian wrote the first verse and Brian wrote most of the rest. " The Show Must Go On" came from Roger and John playing the sequence, and I started to put things down. At the beginning, it was just this chord sequence, but I had this strange feeling that it could be somehow important, and I got very impassioned and went and beavered away at it. I sat down with Freddie, and we decided what the theme should be and wrote the first verse." (Brian May quote)

Saying he was incredibly ill is a terrible understatement of how much close to death Freddie was. This album was recorded by parts, and by parts I mean: they were all at home waiting for Freddie's call saying: "Guys, today I feel OK for recording" so they rushed to Freddies home to try to record something because they didn't know if he would be OK for a whole day or just some minutes. Also that's why nearly all video clips from that album were recorded in black&white; it helped to hide the bad state he already was.

You were right about his voice becoming thinner when he started getting sick. Still amazing, just different. BUT, you have to listen to "Mother Love." It was the last song he did, working literally up to his last few days. It sounds like he dug down deep to record one last song with all the depth of the voice he had all his life. It's by far my favorite.

Their last video recorded in May 1991 was These are the days of our Lives..Freddie was very ill and recorded parts of Mother Love, the very last song Freddie worked on. Freddie never got to finish it though, and Brian had to sing the last verse when they revisited the song after Freddie died. Freddie died 6 months later from recording Mother Love. After Freddie died, Queen wrote No One but you - Only the good die young and Roger recorded Old friends and Brian did a song, blues something or something blues???

I had tickets to see them in the late 70s but they cancelled 2 weeks before the concert. Made me sick...

I think the empty spaces and empty places at the beginning is alluding to all those who died of AIDS and the devastation it had on the gay community. So many of their friends died. The world must have felt very frightening and empty.
