He was not dead but was very ill and no longer appearing in videos. Brian who wrote the song said that he thought that it was too vocally challenging for Freddie because he was so ill. Legend has it that Freddie took a shot of vodka and said "I'll do it darling" and recorded the main vocal in one take. Amazing that he could sing that well when so ill. Love this song because it shows how much making music meant to Freddie. I am still honored that I was able to see Freddie and Queen twice. As a band's front man, he has no peer.

The giant crowed you're seeing at the 4:40-ish mark is from Queen's final live performance at Knebworth Park in England. August 9, 1986, the last show of the phenomenally successful Magic Tour. Over 120,000 people were in attendance. It was not long after that Freddie got his AIDS diagnosis, in 1987. Though they didn't tour again, they went on the do more albums as Freddie declined and he sang and sang in the studio until he literally couldn't get out of bed.

At this point he had stop taking his medication in 1990 and he was essentially letting himself die faster to get over the pain, but he wanted to make music until he could no longer, and he amazingly sang this in very few if only one take about a year from his passing. Incredible really. He was saying goodbye before everyone knew.

  • @rebelpearl

As I understand it Brian May wrote the song about Freddie’s struggle with AIDS and his wish to keep working and being treated as normally as possible. When the time came to do a video Freddie was too ill to make it so the choice was made to use parts of previous videos. There is a tribute song which the group did a few years after Freddie was gone that is very touching. The tribute song - titled “No One But You (Only The Good Die Young)” also marked the last time bass guitarist John Deacon was a member of the group. He retired completely after the song and video were recorded. I really recommend watching that video when you can.

One of the last songs Freddie did that he saw through to the release of it and the album (Innuendo) that it's on, but yeah, he was no longer appearing on camera and was extremely ill when he recorded it. And yes, a compilation of various videos and concerts instead. His very last recording is "Mother Love," which he was unable to complete and Brian May does the last verse. Some incredible singing in that song, although it wasn't mixed/completed/released until several years after his death.

Freddie Mercury passed away six weeks after the release of this song so the video was most likely made after as a tribute.

Freddie was on his death bed when recording this, at the start when the screen falls is some of the last footage ever of Freddie alive. He absolutely was sitting on the mixing table and smashed down some vodka for the famous quote "I'll do it darling" he recorded the line in one shot, where toward the end he screams on with the show. The energy he managed to carry there is said to be unmatched even by brian may himself. Freddie was an incredible person, dive into the history of queen and really read up on Freddie. Most of the people they played in large crowds two were in South America Brazil and they had about 200,000 at the performance and they went there several times. The first time Queen went there someone from the media asked him if he was ready for this big show. Freddie said he never performed in front of such a large crowd because Wembley held about 75,000 people, but. Freddie said he was getting ready to go do it. They absolutely loved performing for these big audiences and this is one reason why Queen totally stole the show At Live AID. They had been playing in stadiums like this for years even in South Africa and Japan. The whole group for college educated and smart as hell so they all learn how to speak Japanese and loved the Japanese culture

As he died a few days later, it was his farewell, that's what the video and the song are about and they wanted them to remember him as someone joyful and lifeless

This was released int he UK oct 14th 1991. Freddie died November 24th 1991. He was so sick when the song was due to be recorded that they really thought he wouldn't be able to do it. But no-one stopped Freddie when he decided to do something lol. The video is a montage of previous videos, including i want to break free, It's a kind of magic and others. This is my favourite Queen song. So powerful.

Hi, I looked up the discography on this song and found this synopsis. This explains everything: "The Show Must Go On" Main article: The Show Must Go On (Queen song) "The Show Must Go On" was written primarily by May. The initial idea was a chord sequence Taylor and Deacon were working on. The rhythm of the refrain is similar to the Queen's 1989 song, "I Want It All". May decided to use the sequence, and both he and Mercury decided the theme of the lyrics and wrote the first verse together. From then on May finished the lyrics, completed the vocal melody and wrote the bridge, inspired by Pachelbel's Canon. Some keys and ideas were suggested by the producer too. The song chronicles the effort of Mercury continuing to perform despite approaching the end of his life.[21] The song was initially not released as a single as part of promotion for the Innuendo album, but was released in October 1991 as the band launched their Greatest Hits II album. The video for the song featured a compilation of clips from all their videos since 1982, in support of the Greatest Hits II album. Due to Mercury's critically fast fading health at the time of its production, a fresh appearance by the band in a video was not possible. The track is a personal favourite of fellow British artist Elton John, who performed the song at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert with the remaining members of Queen, and Tony Iommi playing rhythm guitar.[22] A different live version featuring John on vocals later appeared on Queen's Greatest Hits III album. I like the song, but it does make me think about Freddy. Gone too soon.

"The Show Must Go On" is a song by the British rock band Queen, featured as the twelfth and final track on their 1991 album Innuendo. It is credited to Queen, but written mainly by Brian May. Mercury was so ill when the band recorded the song in 1990 that May had concerns as to whether he was physically capable of singing it. Recalling Mercury's performance, May states; "I said, 'Fred, I don't know if this is going to be possible to sing.' And Freddie replied, 'I'll fucking do it, darling' - vodka down - and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal." It was released as a single in the United Kingdom on 14 October 1991 in promotion for the Greatest Hits II album, just six weeks before Mercury died. Supposedly, that was Elton John in the gorilla suit. Elton and Freddie were very good friends. Please react to Flick of the Wrist kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqZ9vLNsc6-ykrg.html and then, please do, Queen - Death on Two Legs (Official Lyric Video) kzread.info/dash/bejne/naWK0s1podvTlqQ.html "Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to...)" is a song by the British rock band Queen, and is the opening track on their fourth album A Night at the Opera. The song was written by Freddie Mercury about the band's fall-out with their original manager and Trident Studios owner Norman Sheffield. Though the song makes no direct reference to him, Sheffield was appalled when he heard a playback of the song at Trident at the time of the album's release, and sued both the band and the record label for defamation. This resulted in an out-of-court settlement, thus revealing to the public his connection with the song. Roger Taylor also noted that despite the success of Killer Queen and Sheer Heart Attack, the album preceding A Night at the Opera, the band was broke before the album was made. Sheffield denied that he or his companies had mistreated the band in his capacity as manager, and cited the original 1972 management contracts between himself and Queen in his autobiography published in 2013, Life on Two Legs: Set The Record Straight, in his defense. The song was recorded and mixed at Sarm East Studios in late 1975. As with "Bohemian Rhapsody", most of the guitar parts on the song were initially played on piano by Mercury, to demonstrate to Brian May how they needed to be played on his guitar. Mercury later recalled that he had tried to make the lyrics as "coarse as possible", and that the other band members were initially shocked at the harsh lyrics. However, the band agreed that the song should be performed as Mercury intended, and it was recorded as such. It was gate-fold, with the lyrics printed on the inside, and you could just sit there poring over them and trying to figure who Freddie might be talking about on songs like 'Death on Two Legs'."

Originally recorded in 1990, released as a Single in the UK in October 1990 several weeks before Freddy's death (November 24,1991) The Video is a montage of Queen's other Music Videos they did throughout the 80s and early 90s. The song is quite possibly one of Freddy's greatest most powerful vocal performances of all time. Another song "Don't Try So Hard" he sings entirely in Falsetto. Freddy forced so much out of himself with this album, almost superhuman his performance was on this song. And of course there's (Dr)Brian May one of the greatest Guitarists of all time, with some brilliant guitar work on this.

This is such an emotional song! The video : nah! Try not to focus on it! It is a mash up of everything at once. This song is so poetic it breaks my heart! It is , in my opinion about a man that is really suffering inside ( because he did, Freddie was dying of the aids virus at this time) but still « the show must go on» « Inside my heart is breaking, my makeup may be flaking but my smile still stays on» This is my fav song from Queen, and i am still in sorrow because the world lost a talent that is beyond words. I saw the musical on Broadway a couple years ago and i cried. But! The cast was amazing!

The first part of the song only the audience is singing. Unmissable! I’m brazilian and I wish I had been there at the time! Obrigada

“But my smile, still stays on.” What a legendary line in a Queen Song. He was basically dying singing making the Album “Innuendo”. What is going on? They are showing their past songs/music videos and their memories. It’s so heartbreaking to watch the music video, because me, obviously born after Freddie’s Death, never got to meet them. But, their Music is great enough for me, they had legendary bass lines, lyrics, drum solos, and guitar solos. ... I also believe that they didn’t show Fred in here because he was having a lot of trouble standing upright. He was trying his complete best for the vocals in this song. He is a legend, diva and fighter. I’m super proud of him and the success of Queen.

He passed away in 91, so this was a video, but Freddy had done the song shortly before he died in one take. IMO Queen was one of the greatest rock bands, if not the best. I am now 66 yrs. old and have seen all the Highlander movies, and a movie with Heath Ledger, before he died, and they all used Queen's songs in them. He was the greatest showman and I still have a cassette tape in my truck, of their greatest hits.
