Bowie and Queen had retreated to some remote place to thrash out ideas for this song and they had nothing. John Deacon the bassist was bored and started riffing out this baseline and the rest as they is history. Oh yeah, fuck Vanilla Ice.

It was quite hard for Freddie to perform this song live because the original track features David Bowie on backing vocals and so Freddie had to sing all of the low octave vocals that Bowie did on the track which was quite tricky for Freddie, since he doesn't usually sing in that low octave. The new Wembley can hold that many, not the old. I think the new one opened in 2009. When o was in my first flush of being a queen fan, whole Freddie was still alive I had a book about the Magic Tour, I remember it saying it was either 72 or 74, certainly not higher. Do you really want to continue arguing this stuff with me. I am obsessive about this stuff and don't forget these things (in quote specific terms - i.e 82 - 74). You cannot win this, plus 'standing room' is irrelevant as it was sold out. The 72 - 74 element depended upon how big the stage is/was. Bye bye.

This was written by John Deacon, the bass player who wasn't sweating. All four members wrote hit songs that remains fairly unusual, and they all had other talents beyond writing and performing that they bought to the table. It was one seriously talented group of people that pushed each other to greater heights.

You picked a great song because here you see what a performer he was. What he do with the crowd and the amazing vocals. Nice one my bruh! 🔥🔥

So some information about this. 1) 74,000 people. 2) My first ever gig, I was 11. 3) This song was originally with shared vocals with David Bowie. 4) This was the 80's, the UK was homophobic but loved Freddie, even though he was openly gay.

Tom, all of the other big name singers and bands were standing at the edge of backstage rocking just like the rest of the fans in front!! But my favorite song from QUEEN’s Live Aid performance was RADIO GA GA when the camera behind Freddie showed the audience clapping with him! That shot right there was indescribably EPIC!!!

I was at that concert, I believe there was 85,000 of us rocking our souls, bodies & hearts. Phenomenal energy, in fact phenomenal everything...

Every time I watch the clip of Freddie's crowd interaction it gives me full body goosebumps

Yes, Vanilla Ice did steal the riff from Queen, and yes, they stole it, they didn't ask permission to use the sample and just did it, they got sued but Vanilla Ice made so much money, he bought the rights to this song to avoid more legal issues. Also, to really hear his amazing vocals, you should react to The Show Must Go On, there are no live versions because he was very ill when he recorded it and died of AIDS about a year later, but he sang the entire song in 1 take while barely being able to stand due to his deteriorating condition, he took a shot of vodka and sang his heart out in 1 take and the result is breathtaking, perfectly healthy people can't even get close to his performance. Freddie was a trooper, he only cared about making music and that was his passion, he put his all into it at all times, even when he was rapidly dying from AIDS, he fought through and destroyed his vocal chords just to give some of his final vocals ever. Absolutely amazing and such an inspiration.

nL Prodigy Vanilla Ice didn't buy the rights to "Under Pressure". In 2017 he made a somewhat confussing claim while doing a radio interview that he bought the rights from Bowie and Queen. According to Brian May and Queens management, that isn't correct but they think he may just be stating what the out of court settlement does allow for in a convoluted and confussing way. He settled out of court with both Bowie and Queen for an undisclosed amount and he had to give both Bowie and Queen writting credit on "Ice Ice Baby". He did not have to give them a percentage of future royalties though and they agreed that he could contune to use the song under his name and he had the right to use it in future compilations and such without having to get permission from them so long as he continued to give them writting credits. So it is assumed that he was saying that he owned the right to continue to use the bass line in that one song in future released versioins or compilations (although I doubt there will be a demand for it) and that is why he said he owns the rights. He doesn't own the rights to "Under Pressure" though. The settlement gave him the right to continue to use the bass line in any possible future incarnations of "Ice Ice Baby" and only for "Ice Ice Baby".

@fragwits Yup, there's alot of isolated vocal tracks from Freddie. One of my favorites, even though its not 100% isolated, but mostly, is How Can I Go On by Freddie & Montserrat Caballé. There are also a ton of instrumental isolated tracks as well, i love hearing Queen's isolated bass tracks, so phenomenal.

Keep going with Queen! Freddie will blow your mind. Killer Queen, One Vision, Mother Love, Innuendo, Radio Ga Ga, I Want It All!

He’s a performer, doesn’t need fancy lights and backgrounds, he was the art of it all. 💛 he carried the mic stand when his first gig he couldn’t get the mic off so he said fuck it and did it from there on out.

One of the best performances ever. Nobody was able to work a stage and build on the energy of the crowd like Freddie. It's been great watching you react to seeing it for the first time.

Dude!! You're awesome!! Thanks for giving Queen and Freddie Mercury their due credit!! He is a true icon!! The microphone stand broke during one of Freddie's early performances and he decided to use that for most of his live concerts, thereafter. There is an actual mashup KZread vid of Freddie and his mic! Thanks again and even if you don't do a review, I encourage you to check out the Live Aid performance by Queen. That, by itself, will earn your respect, if nothing else. They were true artists. (Brian May & Roger Taylor are STILL touring and performing in a Vegas residency right now). Awkward Anxious Jennifer That’s cool. Ok. As long as no one is trying to replace him, I’m ok. I’m good with kids (including those in the next generations) learning all about Queen and Freddie Mercury (Farrokh Bulsara). I think I’d rather they heard the songs in their original form done by those who wrote/composed them. That’s all.

Freddie and Queen could fill stadiums easily. His Live Aid appearance is considered one of the best live performances of all time. There was only one Freddie Mercury. He will always be missed.

It was all the members of Queen plus David Bowie who wrote the song. John Deacon came up with the bass line and almost forgot it before they got to the studio. Vanilla Ice had to settle out of court for using it and pay them all royalties.

Those were the great days of stadium performances where it wouldn't be unheard of to get 50K-75K fans to see a show and when 75,000 people come see your show, the performers better blow it out. In that respect, Queen always rose to the occasion, gave a great performance & never disappointed fans.

Unique no one else comes close vocals amazing Hugh stage presence all round queen of rock

I highly recommend watching Radio Gaga at Live Aid! That is one of my favorite Queen songs!

It reminded of a line from the movie My Favorite Year that goes "I'm not an actor, I'm a movie star!" - Freddie Mercury was not not just the lead singer for a great band, he was a rock star :)

This is widely regarded as one of the best live performances. Ever.

You'd have to be a narcissist to dislike this video.... Too young to have seen him live but grew up on his music. My dad was a massive Queen and Led Zeppelin fan. The London Olympics when they showed that opening bit was absolutely amazing. Your Bohemian Rhapsody reaction you did was great as well. I'm very jealous. To have discovered such great music like Queen, you can't compare to hearing that for the first time.

Freddie Mercury loved the stage, he loved the crowd, he loved to perform. He was an amazing treasure that we lost way too soon.

The thing about freddie was he had the audience in the palm of his hand the way he performed, legend.

Freddy was trained in Classic Opera. And yes, Vanilla Ice stole this riff from them and wound up playing them for it. If you haven't reacted to "Somebody to Love" consider it. To me, it's their best song, everyone can relate to it. As far as crowd size, it was nothing from them to fill stadiums with 50-70k.

I always loved "who wants to live forever" but it's very different than their other songs. Written for the Highlander movie.

That's a Wembley Statium so about 65K people were there, I think. That is the Magic tour, Queen's last tour. He is using a half mic stand. - The crowd call and response from the first of this was used at the 2012 London Olympics, projected onto multiple screens to get the crowd going at the closing ceremonies - that's over 20 years after Freddie's death, he could still get a crowd into the palm of his hand. RIP Freddie and Happy Birthday on September 5! PASS!

parkviewmo this was at the old Wembly (soccer) stadium, it had seating for 82,000. Most of the pitch was also used for this and live aid. My estimate is well over 100,000 so yea a lot of people. I was about the middle on pitch, great great memories. RIP Freddy.

The old Wembley could hold over 100,000, as it did for Live Aid, and it looks as though it was the same for this performance.And, the call/response that Freddie does? He's actually using vocal warm up exercises as part of that. It happens to work very nicely for something like that.

I grew up in the seventies with Queen. Nice to see you kids discover the best band ever. To understand Queen you have to know that Queen is a genre on it’s own. Al band members wrote number one hits. They all where/are highly educated. Roger the drummer is a dentist, Brian May the gitarist is a Master of Science in Astrofysics , John Deacon the bassist is a electro technician and invented the deacon amp which bands still use today. And Freddy, well he was somethong close to god. Freddy could reach 4 octaves which is verry rare for a man. This video is from their live at wembley show. There where about 80,000 people there. And yes, vanilla ice stole it. Check out, Radio Gaga from Queen at live aid 1985.

Wembley stadium has a capacity of around 72,000. At this point in the bands history they generally sold out every night or day that they had a concert no matter how big the stadium was. They actually hold the world record for playing a concert in front of the largest paying crowd (some free music festivals had larger crowds, hence "paying") when they played to approximately 700,000 people in the space of just 13 concerts with the show at São Paulo in Brazil. One of those 13 days set the record with 131,000 setting the world record for the biggest paying audience at 131,000 people. Oh....and yes, Vanilla Ice sampled the opening bass line from "Under Pressure" without permission. I am not sure how he thought he could get away with sampling that iconic bass line without the bands permission and not get busted for it. In the end both Queen and David Bowie (who co-wrote the song with Queen) filed a law suit and Vanilla Ice stupidly tried to claim it was his own creation because he added an extra note in places. Anyone with functioning ears knew he ripped it off though and he ended settling with Bowie and Queen out of court for an undisclosed amount. I am sure it was an expensive mistake but "Ice, Ice Baby" is also the song that put him on the map so the end cost may still have been worth the idiot move.

Here's some info from Wikipedia about the old Wembley Stadium. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wembley_Stadium_%281923%29?wprov=sfla1 The old stadium which was where this concert took place, was demolished in about 2000 and now we have an even more fantastic new Wembley Stadium in its place. I say all this because it happens to be my local stadium here in London, only about 4 miles from my house. The arch above the stadium is visible from high points all across London.

I love it what your doing. To learn other peoples songs is to learn their views and tastes. They tell the tales and talks of a peoples frustrations and joys in life. Thanks for doing these reviews.

A couple of notes. Yes, Vanilla Ice sampled from Queen. This song was done in the studio with David Bowie on co-lead vocals during a single night of partying. Word around the campfire is Mercury and Bowie did not get along very well putting an end to a collaboration that could have produced some amazing music. Def check out the studio version with Bowie. Brings out an emotion that does not get captured live. I believe the crowd was around 72000 peeps. Queen broke the world record for largest crowd to see a single performer when they played in front of 132,000 people in Brazil. In fact they played in front of 700,000 people over 13 shows in Brazil. At the time it smashed attendance records. It has probably been broken by now but Queen were the pioneers of large stadium performances. Only Freddie had a big enough personality to pull that off. A true showman. To my recommends. Innuendo, March of the Black Queen (a personal favorite), Another One Bites the Dust, Fat Bottom Girls, The Prophet's Song and a list that could go on and on. In my humble opinion Queen has a catalog of great tunes that is unmatched. Rarely a weak song on an album.

Dark_Helmut - Yeah that record for largest audience for a band has been broken by U2 for their Popmart Tour with 150,000 for a single audience.

July 13, 1985, that's about a 72,000+ crowd at Wembley Stadium.

I was a little kid when this concert happened. I lived in Nevada so wasn't at the concert. My parents were watching it on TV and I remember when Freddy came out and I knew this was special even though I never had seen anything like this or even knew of anything. It was amazing!

I went to see queen this year with their new front man. Right before we will rock you they did the beginning call backs of this concert with a hologram of freddie. It still gets 20000 people singing back 30 years later. My 6 year old loved it. Seeing roger taylor and brian may still rockin it was amazing

Its around 70 thousand or more is the capacity of the wembley stadium like live aid that held the year before at july 1985

Vanilla I ce did copy it. but he said that he added an extra chord. and so he didnt copy it. but he lost when sued

Using half a microphone stand....his theme...broke one years earlier and finished the concert with the broken stand....there out he usually used a long handled microphone....ice ice got sued for stealing this...RIP Freddie...

What's crazy is that was his vocal warmup in the beginning, he got the crowd up off their feet and hype for HIS VOCAL WARMUP. 100,000 people (most ever in a stadium). When I watched the performance I can only think about what he was feeling, the greatest front man ever, a man that was doubted by his own family, even his own band at times, people disliked him because he was gay all of that, imagine all of that flowing through you as you perform what would go on to be known as one of the greatest performances ever for the biggest crowd ever.

Man, this is my first time to watch your channel and you're great! This reaction trend is great because it's introducing music lovers to things they might not ever hear/listen to and it's bringing people together. Music has always done this and always will. I've listened to Queen since their first hit (yes, I'm old!) and still have one of their CDs on shuffle in my car. And always open to good new music, too. My son often shares his likes with me, including Prog Rock and metal. It's all good in it's own way! This is stadium rock, son!!! These bands brought in so many people. Back in the day there were huge stadium concerts and people for miles. I saw The Rolling Stones in a stadium and it was awesome. Concerts now are much smaller affairs than they used to be. If you haven't yet, listen to the version of "Under Pressue" with Freddie and David Bowie. For country songs, might I suggest Keith Whitley-When You Say Nothing At All and/or Brooks and Dunn-Maria.

Queen was THE ultimate stadium group, they could pack 'em in to any venue. I know you've heard this before but the Live Aid concert where they controlled (literally) over 1.5 Billion people with just their music as they didn't have their usual stage show is amazing!

I’ve seen this video a thousand times an the hairs stand up on the back of my neck every single time! Freddie is an absolute genius, the term legend gets thrown around to easy but he and the band are true legends of music, all time favourite band without doubt! Breaks my heart that I was to young to see them live because to experience something like that will only come round once in a lifetime. There music will be remembered for generations to come. 1985.. I was 20 working on a oil rig near the arctic circle, off Norway coast.. the rig manager played the whole concert through the PA.. best work day ever! :-)

There were about 72,000 people at this gig. The last gig of that tour pulled around 200,000 in Knebworth Park, about an hours drive from the center of London.

1986 Magic Tour at Wembly Stadium. ~72,000 in attendance. The tour sold over 1,000,000 tickets worldwide. The single largest stop was Rio de Janero, Brasil with over 100,000 tickets.
